Bibliotheca: Recent Episodes

Timothy Hadden

Bibliotheca, meaning "a library", is a place for conversations about books, ideas captured within books, recommendations, and a wide-array of conversations that range from therapeutic subjects, theological subjects, and much, much more. Your host, T.C.Hadden, is a pastor, licensed addiction counselor, and avid student of the Word of God and fan of literature of "almost" all genres.

While not a popular conversation, it is a conversation that we must have. Not being against counseling, I think it behooves us to consider some key questions surrounding the ideas that are quietly capturing the church community. Are we creating a community that increases spiritual power or are we creating a community that erodes certain aspects of the power of the Spirit? Are we dangerously excluding certain diagnostic features from spiritual assistance? Join in on this brief conversation and let's talk about it.

Another REPLAY episode of a message that deeply impacted me in times past.

1 Peter 4:12–13 (KJV 1900) — 12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Listen in to our first Replay episode where we bring sermons from the past that all played an integral role in my own life. In this episode, David Fuller delivers a powerful message that still rings true for today and, as one who grew up under his ministry for roughly 15 years, there remains a deep and impactful resonance with my spirit from the hours spent as a child that developed into a teen hearing his voice weekly. I pray this message impacts you as well.

In this episode, an in-depth presentation is given regarding the Spirit of God as seen through the Old and New Testaments. As you will discover, the Ruah Elohim of the Old Testament is the same as the Pneuma Ho Theos of the New Testament. Listen in as we walk through the bible and lay out a theological presentation on the Spirit of God.

There is currently a social media post going around that sounds very astute regarding "when people leave your church" followed by five points of responsibility we all have when people leave our church to go to another church. What many fail to understand is that the post lacks context and could easily serve as a victim card for those who have left sinfully and/or wrongly. The five responsibilities we are supposed to have are as follows: Love them, champion them, thank them for the time we had with them, honor them, be their best cheerleader.

Context matters with these posts and with so many BROAD statements, I would never encourage this post to be shared because I don't know the motive of the author, I don't believe this is a post that should be posted without specific clarity and context, and there are many situations that (as member of a church) I may not be aware of and sometimes people leave wrong and try to influence others who remain. Again...context matters. We need to be careful!

As an addiction counselor licensed in Oregon and a graduate of addiction-related studies with invested extensive hours working with those struggling with addictions like pornography, this episode seeks to address a small piece of conversation that I have when teaching workshops in churches and--in particular--teaching parents how to respond to sexual exploration and discovery that their children will go through. One topic I cover is masturbation and how a parent should respond if--and when--they catch their young children engaging in such activities. Very important conversation that everyone needs to listen to and share with other parents.

In this episode, borrowing from graduate studies and clinical experience, I navigate the premise of "giving advice" and council. Is too much too much? Is there a right and wrong time or way to give advice? I go through several key points worthy considering that has helped me immensely when navigating giving council.

In this episode, I discuss the importance of those who minister the Word of God to have an interpretative humility. We, as workmen rightly dividing the Word of Truth, must come to the text with the awareness of our bias, presuppositions, and other lenses that can often interrupt a proper interpretation of the Bible. I also discuss how I, as a pastor locally, encourage the pew (congregation) to study, read, and know the Bible because, the more informed the pew is the more I--as the pastor--become accountable to the bible that I teach and preach from! One great antidote to falsehood and biblical distortion is a pew that isn't pushed away from the bible, but who is drawn near to the bible. We must cease to platform personality and elevate the bible which, as I teach locally, that is the reason for our pulpit. It isn't for me to stand on or for me to be cavalier, crude, or broadcast my own personality, but it is a sober place to elevate God's Word to a proper place of importance in the house of God. Take a listen and be challenged by something that has deeply captured me over the last several months and is soon to become an article for a magazine publication.

A must have book for those interested in Pentecostalism. This book writes an accurate, thought-provoking analysis of Seymour and his contribution to Pentecost. Sadly, there has been an emphasis to highlight Parham to a degree I think is too lofty while trying to diminish Seymour's impact. Over 100 extant writings included.

What does methodological doubt (Cartesian doubt) have to do with C.S. Lewis' "Silver Chair" from the Chronicles of Narnia? Well, in this short episode, quite a bit! I discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary reading strategy and the important of getting into areas of philosophical thought that peppers so much literature today. The quote of the day from this episode is from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings book "Whoever breaks a thing to understand it has left the path of wisdom."
