Money Mechanics with Scott Malcolm: Recent Episodes

Scott Malcolm

As human beings we share a commonality.  We are all born into the financial system in which we live.  On a daily basis we make decisions on how we earn, spend, save, invest and give away our money as well as how willing we are to get into debt.

Welcome to Looking Under the Hood – a podcast all about helping you to unpacking money so you can move towards financial freedom.

I’m Scott Malcolm, I’ve always been curious to understand how things work.  When I was a kid there was that one time, I pulled apart our family toaster to see how it worked – sorry again Mum and Dad!

When I became a financial planner – fresh out of Uni in 2000 I had the same desire to get a deep understanding of the money stuff and how to make it work for you.

What I have learnt and seen working with clients is that the Money stuff is no different.  If you have an understanding of how the system works and how you relate to it, you can empower yourself for a better financial future.

My aim of this podcast is to give you money insights as we ‘look under the hood’ and unpack how the financial system works, and provide some stories around clients situations I have worked with over the last few decades to give you greater understanding of you and the money in your life.

We will kick of our first series to look under the hood and unpack money in the context of the Australian financial system.  While tax and retirement systems change between countries the fundamentals and foundations of money are a shared human experience.

Financial planning weather you are doing it yourself or paying for professional advice, is all about having a decision making framework in place to navigate your life transitions as you move through startup phase, accumulation phase and then into retirement or financial freedom phase.

I look forward to taking on you a journey to unpack your money stuff and get the foundations in place to be living your ideal life.

Thanks for listening!  We love your support, please subscribe, review, comment and share this episode to help empower and educate more folks around the money stuff!

You’ll hear how to build a one-page money framework, use a values filter before making financial decisions, identify the habits that helped or held you back, and choose one practical action that can make your financial year feel calmer and clearer.

This conversation is for anyone who starts the financial year with good intentions but wants a plan that actually sticks — one that supports security, freedom, family, contribution, adventure, or whatever matters most to you.

Not every money decision looks smart on a spreadsheet, but that doesn’t always mean it was a mistake.

In this episode we unpack the so-called “dumb” money decisions people make (Scott included) and why some of them are still worth it. From spending on experiences, taking career risks, helping family, buying convenience or choosing joy over optimisation, we explore the difference between careless spending and conscious spending.

This is a lighter, honest conversation about money choices, hindsight, values and the lessons that come from decisions we probably wouldn’t reverse, even if they weren’t perfectly rational.

Every year Budget night brings big headlines, hot takes and a whole lot of confusion. In this episode of the Money Mechanics Podcast, Scott Malcolm CFP® and Ara Jansen unpack the 2026–27 Federal Budget and translate it into real‑world implications for everyday Australians.

We break down the key tax changes in plain English – from income tax cuts and the new “no‑receipts” work deduction, to the Working Australians Tax Offset and what it actually means when an offset is “non‑refundable”. We then move into the big structural shifts: capital gains tax reform, tighter rules on negative gearing, the new 30% minimum tax on discretionary trusts, and what all of this could mean for investors, business owners and family groups.

Scott and Ara also explore the superannuation side of the Budget, including payday super, Division 296 for balances over 3 million, and why some people are suddenly asking if they should move property into an SMSF. Through real‑life style scenarios, they show how these changes might land for a typical family with a home, one investment property and plans for a family trust – and why rushing to restructure purely for tax reasons can backfire.

If you’ve felt overwhelmed, anxious or tempted to make a big move after hearing this year’s Budget coverage, this conversation is for you. No spin, no panic – just clear guidance on what’s changing, who needs to pay attention, and how to use the next couple of years to make calm, intentional decisions.

Choosing a super fund can feel simple on the surface, until you start comparing fees, performance, insurance, investment options and member services.

In this episode we unpack how super comparison tools work, what they can help you see, and where they can fall short. We look at the difference between comparing a fund on headline performance and understanding whether it actually suits your life outcomes, risk profile, time frame, insurance needs and retirement strategy.

We also explore “free” super comparison offers. What are they comparing? Who is behind the offer? What information do they need from you? And when does a free comparison become a lead-in to advice, product switching or a sales conversation?

A practical guide to using super comparison tools with curiosity, caution and context, so you can ask better questions before making changes to one of your biggest long-term assets.

Inflation is hitting households hard — but what’s actually behind it, and what can you actually control?

In this episode, we break down how global events (including rising oil prices and supply chain disruptions) flow into fuel costs, supermarket prices, and everyday expenses. Scott and Ara explore how interest rates affect far more than mortgages, what’s pushing up the cost of living, and the steps anyone can take right now to strengthen their financial position.

We’ll unpack:

  • The spending habits that change most during inflationary periods
  • What rising rates really mean for households
  • Three practical actions you can take today — no matter what the RBA does next
  • How to separate what’s in your control from what isn’t

Plus, we tackle a listener question

“Why do I think I’m saving money buying things on sale that I never planned to buy?”

And Scott closes with a grounding mindfulness moment to help you stay centred in uncertain times.

After only hearing about the good things going on with property I bought my first investment at the age of 22 🙌🏼 It was a huge milestone that I'd been working towards for many years but I was naive and uneducated 🤡 in this space which led to a massive missed opportunity 😣

Over the subsequent years I built a successful career in recruitment but knew I wanted a way out at some point. To allow me to pivot into something else I knew investing was an avenue to provide me the ability. Even though I'd bought a dud 👎🏼 as a novice investor I was able to turn it all around ↩️ with the help of buyers agency, InvestorKit which was my missing puzzle piece 🧩 to be successful in real estate investing. I purchased 4 more properties over the course of 2.5 years and held a portfolio of 5 properties by the age of 30, now worth $2.7M 🚀

This experience has ignited my passion ❤️‍🔥 to prevent others from making large financial commitments to an asset that doesn't produce the outcome they're hoping for 💸

I'm now working as a Buyers Agent, partnering with InvestorKit (Buyers Agency of the Year 2023 🏆) who is known for their industry leading property market insights and data-driven decision making in uncovering the top performing locations across the country.

As a Buyers Agent I represent the buyer in the real estate transaction providing full end-to-end service from;
- strategy creation ♟️ and portfolio mapping 📍
- discovering outperforming locations across the Australian property market 📊
- sourcing desirable properties both on and off market 🔎
- networking with real estate agents 📞
- negotiating at relevant stages of the buying process 🤝🏼
- ensuring a property is successfully settled and tenanted ✅
- all whilst helping my clients stay accountable to their long term investing goals 💪🏼

Internationally recognized as the father of the Life Planning movement, the Harvard-educated George Kinder revolutionized financial advice for over 30 years by training over 3,000 professionals in 30 countries in the field of financial Life Planning. He founded the Kinder Institute of Life Planning in 2003 after 30 years as a practicing financial planner and tax advisor.

His books and trainings are all about freedom. In his new book, A Golden Civilization and The Map of Mindfulness, Kinder draws on 50 years as a mindfulness practitioner, over 30 years as a mindfulness teacher, and his experience training financial advisors globally to challenge the basic concepts of economics, our understanding of democracy, of space-time, and our own hearts. His objective is to bring greater levels of freedom everywhere.

His three books on money, The Seven Stages of Money Maturity, Lighting the Torch, and Life Planning for You, are considered by many to be the seminal works in the burgeoning field of financial Life Planning. Almost twenty years after its publication, his classic Seven Stages of Money Maturity was still featured in a July 2018 Wall Street Journal article “The Financial Books That Should Be on Your Summer Reading List.” He has written one book on mindfulness,  Transforming Suffering into Wisdom, as well as a book of photography and poetry, A Song for Hana.

Jonathan Shapiro writes about banking and finance with the Australian Financial Review, specialising in hedge funds, corporate debt, private equity and investment banking. He is based in Sydney and has co authored By Now Pay Later with James Eyers.

"The fascinating behind the scenes story of the brash Aussie technology start up that changed the way a whole generation around the world does their shopping.

Millennials love it. Amateur investors made millions out of it, and its founders became billionaires. But professional investors steered clear, regarding it as over-valued.

In a few short years, the Australian startup Afterpay has put a rocket under consumer finance and birthed a global industry. It pioneered the four-payments model that allows customers to bypass credit cards for online shopping and budgeting, with the cost borne by the retailer. Just five years after it was founded, Afterpay had changed the way a generation went shopping, how brands from big banks to fashion labels win customers, and how institutions value companies.

Buy Now, Pay Later recounts the dramatic behind-the-scenes story of the founding and rise of Afterpay. It reveals the network of business and personal relationships that enabled the company to finance its speedy growth and the manoeuvring that enabled it to escape regulation for years, as well as the near-death experiences and rising concern that it is getting young people hooked on debt."

Steph Clarke is a question asker, monochrome-lover and life-long-learner.

After starting professional life as an accountant with EY in the UK, Steph quickly realised that spreadsheets did not satisfy her need for creativity. Cue a secondment to learning and development (a secondment she never left) where she discovered that designing and teaching audit related learning was much more fun than doing audits.

In 2018 Steph started her own business - firstly offering individual coaching and facilitation before focusing on team coaching and facilitation.  2020 served up the perfect opportunity to finally hone a skillset in graphic design. It's a tangible mix of creativity + business + communication.

Steph is podcast host of @stephsbizbookshelf.

Most people don’t have time to read the books they want to. Each week join Steph, a life-long bookworm, as she brings you the lessons from the best non-fiction books she’s read. Steph will share the ‘three big things’ the books taught her, favourite quotes and actions she’s implemented since reading the book. If you have an ever-growing pile of half-read books on your bedside table, this podcast is for you. Steph's Business Bookshelf; doing the reading so you don't have to.  Connect with Steph here:

Andrew Barr has been a member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly since April 2006, and Chief Minister since December 2014. He is also the Territory's Treasurer.

In 2012, Andrew led the long term taxation reform program for the ACT, through the phased abolition of inefficient transaction taxes (including stamp duty and insurance tax) and a transition to a sustainable and fairer land-tax based revenue system. The ACT is the only Australian jurisdiction to have undertaken such reforms, which were recommended in the 2010 Australia's Future Tax System Review commonly known as the "Henry tax review"

It is great have Andrew along to discuss some of the mechanics and thinking behind Tax Reform and the 'Vertical Fiscal Imbalance' which exists between the State and Territory Jurisdictions and the Commonwealth.
