As people who have faith, should loss affect us with the same magnitude or heaviness?
A few months after my mom passed away, I did an online search for “books on faith and grief”. When Kate J. Meyer’s book “Faith Doesn’t Erase Grief” came up, I found myself clicking to buy it immediately. As I read even the first few pages of the book, not only did I know I needed to have Kate on the podcast, but it truly changed my grief journey for the better.
This conversation with Kate about the intersection of faith and grief was beautifully important and honest. Some of the questions we talk about are…
This conversation truly matters for those who are walking through grief and those who haven’t had to yet.
I also can’t recommend Kate’s book highly enough. You can get your copy HERE.

It feels like the understatement of the century to say that a lot has happened in our world in the last 3 years, let alone the last 3 weeks.
Between a global pandemic, war in Ukraine, war in Israel and Gaza, racism, antisemitism, hurricanes and floods, wildfires, school shootings, and too many tragedies and conflicts, we have experienced a lot of collective grief. It is an awful breeding ground for increased anxiety, depression, suicide, fear, anger, loneliness, hopelessness, and division.
So how do we navigate and process this collective grief in a healthy way that does not allow us to be overtaken by it?
In this episode, we talk about 3 important practices to implement in the midst of collective grief and why they matter. These ways have been researched and chronicled by trusted psychology and grief recovery centers, and can be put into practice in each of our lives.
I will never forget the conversation where Garry, a new friend at that point, mentioned in passing “I was supposed to spend life in prison but the Lord saved me”. My whole brain froze and I immediately knew this full story needed to be recorded for the podcast.
… and it did NOT disappoint.
If you want a story about incredible redemption and the Lord reaching someone who others may write off as too far gone, THIS is it.
Garry so honestly shares his story about:
And by the way, I’m hearing this story for the first time along with all of you. It’s mind-blowing.
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

I was recently having a conversation with a friend where she said "I just feel like I'm going throughhhhh it in every area of my life and it's so hard feel like I can actually laugh or smile". I'd imagine so many of us have been in a similar place where every area of our lives feel overloaded and like too much is happening.
Especially when those things go past simple busyness and enter in the realm of heaviness, challenges, grief, or personal or spiritual attacks, how on earth are we supposed to truly find joy?
How can we make it through each day without wanting to completely crumble by 10AM?
How do we navigate the loneliness that comes in navigating a unique loss or a unique hardship?
How can we honor a loved one in our grief?
This is an episode not just for grievers, but for anyone who feels like they just are having a difficult time knowing how to navigate a particularly difficult season. I look forward to hearing what you take out of it.

Have you ever noticed that we don't really know how to approach talking about grief ESPECIALLY in the faith world and believer circles? We often end up sharing seemingly helpful thoughts like "well at least they aren't in pain anymore" or "we believed for healing... but she wasn't healed" or "he's serving in his highest calling as an angel now" which can often do more harm than help.
Ever since my mom passed away, I've been faced with how to bring believing in a God who heals and does miracles together with the reality that there is death and unanswered prayers in our world.
How do we continue to believe in healing when our prayers for healing weren't answered like we thought?
How the God see death?
How do we as believers get grief right... and get grief wrong?
Does death mean we weren't spiritual enough or didn't have enough faith?
How can we wrestle with God about grief?
These are just a few of the questions that I was honored to navigate in this message I gave at a conference a few months back. It was such an incredible time that I knew I needed to release the recording here for the podcast.

You can take the girl out of the teacher, but you can't take the teacher out of the girl. So let's take it back to the classroom (figuratively) and go through a few grief lessons.
One of the most important parts of grief for me over the last two years has been giving a full picture to others who haven't yet walked through grief about what it's like in the day to day and how they can support their grieving friends with care and intention. That's why one of the four main pillars of this podcast is "supporting your people well".

I'd put this episode in my top 3 most important episodes that I've ever recorded.
When our mom passed away in June 2021 from cancer, it became on my deepest priorities to care for my brother Josh as he grieved.
How could I keep our mom's legacy and memory tangible and alive in him?
What did he need as an outlet for his grief given his unique way of thinking?
Would his Down Syndrome diagnosis make his grief different from the rest of us?
How could I as his sister jump into the role of caretaker?
I'm so grateful that we've landed in a really good rhythm and I hope that, if you're in a similar situation in any sense, you'll be able to gleam some encouragement and inspiration from our story.
Some topics that I talk about are:
finding a counselor who works with adults with disabilities
involving our mom in our everyday
keeping routines the same
providing a maternal warmth and emotional care
being a point of contact for conversation
showing up and letting him know he's loved
beginning a year of fun and excitement

Vanessa and I had a conversation so good that it couldn't be cut down just to one episode. In this part 2, she chronicles the crisis she and her husband navigated as they watched the health of their much-awaited newborn baby take a turn into a life or death situation, and all that happened before and after. Whether or not you are a parent or can relate to a similar situation, she shares so much for all of us about processing trauma, supporting others in their time of need, and walking in spiritual authority.

We all talk about it, no matter what our relationship status is... singleness, dating, relationships, marriage, situationships, etc. And yet honestly I find that sometimes singleness is viewed as the place no one wants to be and we all desperately try to get out of.
What I have found through the last almost 33 years of singleness is that there is such beauty in a season of being single and there is so much those who are dating, engaged, or married can (and should) learn from their single friends.

Let's talk about dating and marriage...
Even before Vanessa and I began our conversation, I just had a feeling it would be one full of wisdom, inspiration, and conviction... and it did not disappoint. Vanessa didn't have the most clear-cut road to finding her now-husband Michael, and she shares all about her journey with such honesty.
If you have been through even one "we're talking" situationship, have been asked "why aren't you married yet?", have doubted if you'll find someone as you get older, or have feared commitment or marriage, I want to especially encourage you to tune in for this conversation. Whether you call it multitasking, doing two things at once, or just straight up busyness... we all do it. We scroll through social media while watching TV. "Think of the things that you would say about somebody at their funeral and say it now to them while they're still with you."
I had this thought a few weeks ago and had to ask myself why we wait until someone dies to openly share all of the things we love and admire about them.
We all probably want to encourage others, but we rarely allow extended space to build others up and be vulnerable in that. As I processed through this, I couldn't help but record an episode about it. Some of the thoughts I share are...
If you seek to empower others and point out the good in others more, as well as be open to receiving it yourself, then this is the episode for you.

Can you BELIEVE we're already finished with season 2?! I kind of can't.
There has been so much that has into making this season (and just this podcast as a whole) and a huge piece of that is YOU. Because I always say in every episode "we're going to cover all the things", I wanted to end this season including your questions and pick ones to answer that truly cover all the things. I honestly was not expecting the answers to flow so perfectly one to another nor was I expecting to be so profoundly impacted while talking about my answers for them.

... and the last question especially hit me hard (in the best way) and brought a feeling of incredible full circleness that I truly needed.

Let's travel back to April 2021 when one podcast episode (and, no, not one of my own) truly changed my life. There’s been something I’ve been wanting to say for a while… and in this episode, I say all of it and more. Grief is an awful journey and so insanely complicated. Something I’ve been struggling with the most in the last year and a half is how to authentically and honestly share all that I’m walking through while also keeping what is personal and private just that.

When I think about grief, of course I (especially given my circumstances) first think about the loss of a loved one through death. I would imagine that is what most people initially think of when they talk about grief.
However, grief at its core is “the response to loss”. We began last episode talking about that a little with Petra, and this episode is chock FULL of such incredible wisdom surrounding this in my conversation with my friend Sarah.
In this episode, we discuss…
Sarah is someone I’ve always known to bring such insight and authenticity to everything she does, and this conversation is no different! If you have experienced the loss of a life milestone, struggle with bitterness, are curious to hear about grief from a non-death perspective, or relate to any of the things above, this is the episode to listen to.
Also, connect with Sarah for an incredible friendship and beautiful food! @sarahlindsaypogue

If you want an episode that covers almost every aspect of grief… we’ve got you covered. My conversation with Petra is one that still has me processing, and I’m sure it’ll do the same for you. What I love about this episode is that we talk about what grief looks like when you lose a loved one and also what grief looks like in transition and unmet expectations.
Our conversation topics include:
Petra brings so much wisdom and insight that I have a feeling will touch on something that each of us are thinking about and processing through. So much of this conversation just feels relevant and important. My tip would be to have a notepad ready to go as you listen to write down what she shares, or to pause the episode momentarily and process through your own thoughts about it all.

This episode is one that I walked away from thinking “that was just incredible” and “I wish we could’ve talked longer”, and I have a feeling you’ll think the same. Jon Lash is someone who consistently brings powerful wisdom in a way that also carries such empathy and warmth. In this episode, he shares the incredible legacy that his dad left behind, one that we all can learn from, as well as some of the lessons he has learned while walking through grief. A few things we discuss are... - how God works all things for good even a changed timeline and confusing disappointments - how we can maintain a sense of hope that isn’t false or overly positive (even if you're an optimist) - how to be appropriately intrusive with people who are grieving - how to deal with anger and regret - how to hold deep hope even through our darkness My pro tip is to have a pen and paper or a note in your phone ready because, as per usual, Jon leaves us in this episode with so many pieces of invaluable wisdom… plus he prophesies and possibly manifests a new family tradition for the Lash generations to come. Be friends with Jon and keep up with his amazing church at @greenhousesfl on Instagram and www.GreenhouseSFL.org.

Candyce is someone who has always inspired me ever since I was a young girl, and in the last year she has also been someone who has openly and honestly shared of her grief journey since losing her mom 30 years ago. I cannot wait for you all to be able to gleam from her insight.
In this episode, we talk about so many important things relating to grief. We talk about what biblical lamenting looks like for us today, how to routinely do a grief inventory, how to be in community well with someone who is grieving, how God can be a mother to the motherless, and so much more.
Candyce doesn’t just share about these topics straight up, but also with some beautiful authenticity and passionate care. It’s such a beautiful balance that I know you’ll feel inspired and encouraged by.

If you thought one Melissa was enough, well then get ready… because in this episode, there’s two of us.
But for real, Melissa Moskowitz Goldsmith is someone who never ceases to speak wisdom in a way that is equal parts honest, challenging, and full of love, and she does just that in this conversation.
She openly shares about losing her husband Jhan in a sudden accident, what was most (and least!) helpful for those around her to do and say, how she continues to grieve while walking in the joy of marrying Steve, why grief is like a game of ping pong, and much more. Plus, what she says in the last five minutes still has me shaken in the best way. I have an inkling that you’ll feel the same.

It's safe to say that one of my favorite topics to talk about it is my mom. You might think "well, of course, because she's your mom!"... and that's true. I love talking about her because I just adore her and we had such a close relationship.
However, it's also because she was incredibly wise, loving, and encouraging, and always carried a high level of discernment that makes my life (and I know many others' lives also) that much better. Whether you knew her personally or are getting to know her through this podcast, there are many lessons that can be learned through her life and legacy. I promise you that you'll grow and be shaped for the better just by listening.
Some of the questions I received that I talk about in this episode are:
What traditions did your mom start or make meaningful that you want to carry on?
Was your mom silly with you guys or was she more the serious mom type?
What are some of your favorite memories with your mom?
How did your mom become a believer?
Does your mom have siblings
What was Linda’s favorite vacation you took as a family? Why was it her favorite?
What was your mom like when she was a kid?
Where do you think her unbridled hospitality and care for others came from?

So many of you had questions about coping skills and how I've learned to cope through grief... so I put together a whole Q&A episode answering these questions. I feel it important to say, and I disclose this during the episode, that there is no one way to grieve and a way of coping that works for someone may not be helpful for someone else. I am sharing what I've gathered in the last ten months in hopes it'll be helpful or encouraging for you as well.
Some of the questions I talk about in this episode are:
How do you stay connected to your feelings in grief, when all you want to do is shut off from feeling?
What are ideas to celebrate mile markers of your loved one's life to keep their memory alive?
Is the topic of death something you avoid talking about it are you more open to it?
What coping skills have you used in past crises that were/are helping through this loss? Have you used any new coping skills?
Does it help you to make reels and connect with others through social media/podcast?
What is the best way to cope?

Do you have a friend who is walking through grief that you want to support? Or maybe are you grieving yourself and want to help the people around you best support you? I received some incredible questions asking what the best ways are to help a friend in their grief, and I share my thoughts on all of them.
The questions I answer in this episode are:
How do you practically give grace to people who don't understand your grief?
If you haven't seen a friend in a while and they talk with you "as if everything is normal," does that super bother you, or is it refreshing?
How would you suggest someone should act with someone who is grieving who doesn’t want to talk about the loved one they lossed?
How is it to “share grief” while living with your dad and Josh
How does Josh understand/process the loss of your mom? How does that impact you?
How relationship between family members has grown since
If I have a friend whose parent passed away before I met them and they don’t talk about them much, should I try to foster more conversations about their parent? How do I bring that up?
How can we practically support you, when we hear people saying harmful things?
Do you enjoy it when someone brings up a memory of your mom, or does it upset you?
Is it awkward for you in conversation if the person doesn't ask about your mom?
Does it help or hurt when others speak about your mom?

Are you scared of forgetting certain things about her?

What is the most surefire way to battle fear and overcome adversity? How can we make even the darkest valley a place of springs? How can we go from strength to strength? How can we remain hopeful in the Lord even when we are fighting the attacks the enemy?
There are two passages in the Bible that my mom repeated over and over that specifically tackle these questions. She truly lived by these verses and, the more she shared the meaning and importance of them with me, the more I realized I (and all of us!) should too. Get your Bibles open to 2 Chronicles 20 and Psalm 84, and be ready to walk away from this episode fired up to fight against fear, anxiety, adversity, darkness, and all of the attacks that the enemy tries to throw your way.

Do you believe in God's promises? Do you want to know what His promises are for you? Has He given you a personal promise that you have yet to see fulfilled? Has the opposite of what He promised you happened? How should you wait for God's promises to be fulfilled?
In this episode, I talk about all of this and more. I have simultaneously experienced a promise given to my mom look drastically different from what we expected, and a promise given to me that has yet to be fulfilled. Nonetheless, I believe that God's promises are true and I share the journey I have walked through and the lessons I've learned in the last eight years regarding God's promises in this episode.

Over the last seven months since my mom passed away, God has taught me more than I could ever imagine He would about His will, the reality of heaven, the enemy’s evil plans, His healing power, and His provision.
How do we know if it's God's will to heal? What are Bible verses that support or deny that? Why do people who have faith in God die before their time? Is it true that some don't receive healing? What does God's protection for us against evil look like?
In this episode, I share what the Lord has shown me on all of this and more.

Grief isn’t meant to be walked alone. However, processing through grief and handling all of the relational dynamics that comes with that can be just as challenging as the grief itself. Don’t get me wrong, people are wonderful and community is crucial and neither should be shut out as you grieve. So how do you interact with and give grace to your people, and yourself, as you all walk through total unknowns?
In this episode, I talk about why it’s easy to “keep score” on people (and whether or not you should), how to battle against victimhood and feeling sorry for yourself, and if you should cater to how others feel about your loss or if you should let them feel uncomfortable.

Is it possible to make grieving easier?
What can someone do, especially on the worst days, to alleviate some of that crushing pain and intensity?
How can a griever take some of the overwhelming busyness off of their shoulders?
In this episode, I go through three of the things I found made my grief journey even just the tiniest bit more manageable. I won’t promise that it’ll take away the grief or help you get over it, but I will say that it’ll make each day a little less hard through the millions of things you’re responsible for and processing through.

Today I’m giving five of my best tips for someone who is grieving.
I thought I knew what grief was like before I lost my mom, and yet I had absolutely no clue until it knocked my whole world upside down. In this episode, I share five of the most important and helpful things I have learned about grief in the last five months since my mom passed away.
I cover everything from breathing (yes, breathing) and time management, to comparing your grief with others and how I feel about the expected timeline of grief (spoiler alert, I hate it and you’ll hear all the reasons why).
Whether or not you have lost a loved one, and whether or not you’ve experienced deep grief, this episode is for you. The unfortunate reality is we all either have experienced profound loss or one day we will experience profound loss. If you haven’t yet, my hope is, when you one day (far in the future) lose someone and begin your grief journey, that you will be able to remember the words of this episode and that they will help you through.

How can I take care of my grieving friend in the day-to-day things?
What do I do if my grieving friend doesn’t want to talk or get together?
What’s the best way to continue to remember their loved one long term?
When does the griever stop needing support?
What questions imply to the griever "well don't be sad"?
Why is “let me know if you need anything” an unhelpful question?
In this episode, my friend Miriam and I continue our conversation about how you can best support a friend through grief. We cover all of these questions (and much more!) and have an incredibly beautiful conversation about grief and friendship. It was such a good conversation, that it was too long for just one episode! This is part two of our conversation (I recommend listening to part one first) and I believe that everyone will take something away from this episode.
Even if you don’t currently have a friend who has walked through grief, unfortunately one day you will, and I hope that you will be able to think back on this conversation to help guide you in loving and supporting them.

Have you ever wondered how to support your friend who is grieving a loss? Is there a right thing vs. the wrong thing to say? How should you show your friend you’re there for them without overwhelming them? Is a card the right thing to send? Does talking about the person make things worse?
In this episode, my friend Miriam joins me to talk about how you can best support a friend through grief. We cover all of these questions (and more!) and have an incredibly beautiful conversation about grief and friendship. It was such a good conversation, that it was too long for just one episode! This is part one of our conversation (part two will be next episode) and I believe that everyone will take something away from this episode.

What does it actually look like to make the most of your time?
How can you invest in other people in the best possible way?
What does the verse "teach us to number our days" really mean?
Is it a bad thing when people talk about themselves?
What is the best way to show others that you want to help them?
In this episode, I share incredible lessons that my mom taught me about two things we all always either have not enough of or too much of - time and people. My mom had incredible discernment when it came to understanding people and managing her time... those are two of her greatest gifts. If you're going to learn from anyone about time and people, I highly recommend it be Linda.
This is an episode full of incredible insight from Linda that you can directly apply to your own life in a meaningful way. I encourage you to take notes and be ready, because I can guarantee that you'll receive so much from the lessons she taught. Plus, I share my own spicy take about one of the lessons, and I'm curious to hear if you agree or not.

My mom is a teacher through and through. She was so intentional in making sure that every word she spoke and every thing she did taught us and equipped us. Nothing she did or said was without purpose. It's just how she lived and loved.
In today's episode, I share five life lessons I learned from her that we all need to hear. This is for sure a note-taking episode so prepare yourself to be encouraged, empowered, and inspired as we learn from Linda.

Our family has faced no other battle quite like the one we fought from January to June 2021. Through every high and every low, my mom led by example with the fiercest faith. Even to her last breath, she remained steadfast and strong in her devotion to the Lord and to us.
In today's episode, I vulnerably chronicle the last six months of her life on earth. It is probably the most personal episode I've ever recorded and it was incredibly therapeutic. As you listen, I know you will walk away in beautiful disbelief for how my mom maintained her faith despite all she was up against, and empowered to live more like her. I know that's how I feel.

Have you ever heard the phrase "it's not about the destination, it's about the journey"? Well, Austin's mile marker truly encompasses that phrase. Austin's testimony is a powerful example of how God uses all parts of our lives to teach us where our true identity lies.
In this conversation, Austin shares about the environment he grew up in, what fueled his perception of who he was, how he dealt with not being successful, how to saturate yourself in the Lord, the moment that forced him to pause, peace that surpasses understanding, lots and lots of basketball, and much more.

Back sight. Turn 180 degrees around. Front sight.
This episode is my part two conversation with my dad Steve Brown, and honestly it feels like we're having a conversation over the dinner table and happened to click record. Our conversation was sparked by a blog my dad wrote detailing the interesting surveying method that was used to lay out the Mason Dixon line, and we jump from there into so many interesting topics. We talk about what a mile marker actually is historically and spiritually, how to look back at your past and use it to give direction to your future, how to not allow pain in your past to dictate what the future will look like, how to decide truth vs. eternal truths, and how the Word of God determines our line of direction.

It's my birthday episode! All are invited to the party!!
Every year on the day before my birthday, I take time to reflect on the year that is passing and goal cast for the year to come. With my birthday coming up tomorrow (eeeeeeeeks!), I'd love all of you to come along and do that with me! Since this podcast is about mile markers, I wanted to share one of my biggest and most impactful mile markers with you and, honestly, it's something I haven't shared with a lot of people before. I'm grateful to have this space to talk about it with all of you.
I share about having everything stripped away, the process of re-evaluating all aspects of my life, knowing exactly who I am and standing in full confidence in that, how I can intentionally pour into people without expectation, what this last year has taught me about God, people, and myself, and what I want to strive for in my 31st year.

YOU GUYS. This episode is incredible, and incredibly helpful.
I took SIX pages of notes listening back to this episode because it’s so full of wisdom and tips. Miriam and I pick back up with our conversation about mental health, and we cover it from all angels. We talk about how to best support your loved ones who are struggling with mental health, how to verbalize what you are walking through if you are struggling with mental health, how to create a safe space for honesty and openness, where God resides through all of this, why we should grieve and lament together as a community, and so much more.
At the end, Miriam gives amazing resources for the “you do” section and I HIGHLY encourage you to download the list of all of them for yourself. You can find the list on the “resources” page on my website (the link is below)

My conversation with Miriam today felt like we were just chatting over coffee and happened to click "record". It's just that good. The year 2017 in Miriam's life brought incredible highs and intense lows, and I am so grateful that she shared openly and honestly about what she learned about mental health through it.
We talk about how highs and lows in life aren't always mutually exclusive, what positive and negativity look like related to mental health, how to identify where our mental health is really at, what holistic health looks like, where mental health fits in to the spiritual realm, and a whole lot more!

Spoiler alert: I make a pretty major and exciting announcement in this episode!
My family and I have been part of the Down Syndrome community ever since my brother was born 27 years ago. I am fiercely protective of my brother, and advocacy for him and for others with Down Syndrome is what pumps through my blood. In this episode, I share my heart for inclusion, the things I have learned and experienced as a former special education teacher and a passionate sister who has immersed herself in Down Syndrome awareness, what causes Down Syndrome, what it's like to have a family member with Down Syndrome, how you can best support and stand with families who have children or siblings with Down Syndrome, and how you yourself can be an advocate. PLUS, I make a major announcement about a project I've been working on for almost four years that is an extension of my Down Syndrome advocacy.
... and I may or may not have cried twice during this episode.

Do you have a testimony to share? When is the right time to share? How do you share what you believe? What if you don't feel led to share?
All of these questions (and more!) are answered in this episode during my conversation with Erik. We talk about what faith is made of, the different between believing "in" and believing "through", how to have a testimony if you've been a believer all of your life, and even how bungee jumping can be the same as our relationship with God. Wait, what? How? You'll have to listen to find out. Plus, at the end, we dive into the "You Do" application and how we can each implement the content of this conversation into our individual lives.

Talk about an encounter with God that changed so many aspects of life.
In this episode, Erik walks us through how he went from having spiritual apathy and being unable to forgive, to overcoming his fears, seeking answers to his questions, and publicly sharing his testimony... and how the people around him nudged him closer and closer to God.
If you wonder what your testimony looks like, how to share your experiences, how early encounters with God shape your long-term calling, what submitting and releasing your fears to God looks like, or just how to find God at all, then this is the episode for you.

Are you struggling with feeling like you're not doing any big or monumental things? Does it feel like you're stuck in a little bit of a rut and you aren't experiencing all of the fabulous moments you see other people sharing about? Are you just waiting for the big "a ha!" moment where your name or accomplishments finally click or are actually recognized? Trust me when I say I feel you and you should really listen to this episode.
Leah and I continue in part two of our conversation where we talk about why we each matter even if our name is never know publicly, how we can make the small moments carry big meaning, how to recognize our own importance, and how we think God feels about us wanting to be the star of the show.

One thing I love about Leah is that she speaks truthfully and passionately about everything... and this conversation is no different. In this episode, Leah shares the components of her 2016 that to some might be viewed as small or average, but propelled her into major growth and courage.
We discuss recognizing the small moments in life, finding purpose in those situations, speaking up with courage and confidence, seeing God’s grace and patience for us... and how history and Hamilton play a role in all of this.

This week has been a total doozy for me and my family, and I found myself going back to totally ground myself in what the word of God says. It’s no coincidence that we continue in the same thing of starting with God’s word like Steve talked about last week. His part two will be coming soon, so don’t worry, and for now we’re going to pull into a rest stop for a minute to rest, recharge, and relax.
Pull out your journal, and let’s re-root ourselves in the words God speaks, the power His words hold, what His words mean, how we can harness that authority, and how to pray with power directly from the word of God.

We talk about finding direction, knowing history, meditating on scripture, honoring your parents, and aligning the past and the future to the present.
