For me personally this was downwind foiling coming of age here in Australia. It gets me super excited for the future but also just for the present. Downwind Foiling is now a sport that hundreds of people are now participating in here in Australia, it would easily be thousands worldwide. How cool is that?
I do this podcast to grow the sport of downwind foiling and to see it really starting to flourish is epic. The other way I grow the sport is through my online coaching platform, the Coach Casey Club, where I have weekly coaching calls, where you can ask questions and upload videos, plus detailed course material going in depth for each step of the learning process.

I asked Lukas to come on the podcast as he has a bit of a different story compared to others I have had on. He is from Germany and learnt to foil in a river using a bungee. He has since progressed to winging and now downwind foiling utilising big foils and the lakes in his local area. It was a pleasure to dive into his foiling journey and he even flipped the questions onto me at the end. Lukas is also a Coach Casey Club member and heading to the French Downwind Race in October which will be exciting to follow along from Australia before we get some DW races of our own under way with 20 Beaches in Sydney and the West Coast Down Winder in Perth. If you want more content or you want access to my weekly Coach Casey group coaching calls, like Lukas, head to www.caseyaus.com and sign up for the Coach Casey Club.

Some great insights from Oskar and Edo and all in all I was stoked to be able to go through the race from each of our perspectives. It's a long chat but it really gives you some insight into M2O and downwind month.Stoked to battle with fellow Aussie, Oskar, and know that the conditions we train in hold us in good stead for racing in Hawaii. Also a shout out to Edo who is actually a Coach Casey Club member, stoked with how well he did and I know he'll win this race one day. The plan was to sit down with old mate Jimmy for a 10-15 minute catch up on his new venture with Code Foils - but Liam and James ended up chatting for ages, so we're releasing it as a solo episode. Maybe this is a new side to GFP once in a while, smaller catch ups with interviewees about certain subjects that are hitting the limelight. The boys discuss: -The origins of Code Foils -The team behind the brand -How he ended up involved -Foil development -What he's up to at the minute and got coming up -Preparing for M2O -Potential taglines for the brand -Foil marketing nonsense and much more...You'll have to forgive the audio quality on this one, it wasn't intended to be a long episode and James was in an airport terminal! Catch up soon. genericfoilingpodcast Code Foils James Casey

Epic to chat with Josh and go into how he learnt to downwind foil utilising the Coach Casey Club, how he progressed down foil sizes, board sizes and progressed to harder conditions. We go through it all with Bay Runs versus Ocean Runs with different wind directions, we chat foil choice, board choice and cover much much more.
This week I catch up with Perth Standlick, an ex QS surfer but now well and truly fully foil brained. We go through his DW foil learning process, starting with bay runs and progressing to ocean runs very quickly (6:20). He actually confessed to me the first successful ocean run heβd done was with me, I had no idea until during this chat. We go into detail on how to progress down foil sizes (28:00) and stresses the importance of being slightly over foiled rather than slightly under foiled (33:30), especially when learning. We move onto different lines to take when foiling and the squat boost (48:00), conditions for best down winding (55:30) and board design plus his take on prone versus SUP (1:02:10).

There aren't enough women in the sport of foiling but older women even less so. I had the opportunity to chat to Tomoko, a serious go getter who has been chasing the DW SUP Foil dream ever since modern foiling was re invented and absolutley crushing it now. We talked about the girls she foils with in Maui who inspire her, Annie Reickert, Kathy Shipman, Andrea Moller, Devin Blish, Mel Michelitsch, Gabriella Bella, Lily Buden, as well as Paige Alms, Olivia Jenkins and Michelle Crompton who are just getting into it.
We also discuss the gear progression that has made her life way easier as well as the flatwater foil coaching she does with Jeremy Riggs plus the need to pick and choose the DW runs and temper the froth down every now and then to maximise her longevity. An awesome chat with a friend and fellow foil frother.

Then we dove head first into wing foil down winding and SUP downwind foiling going into foils, board designs and lines to take when up and gliding down the coast.
We then shifted into some surf foil chat, comparing high aspect to low aspect foils and and attacking white water. A bit of gear chat going into paddle and mast length, stiffness and thickness and the pros and cons for each. Finally we finished up discussing wing foiling in big waves and some tips for the punters out there giving downwind foiling a crack.

With the King of the Cut run and down I thought it'd be worthwhile recapping on what we missed out on and assess the trends that are happening with downwind foil racing.
I asked Marcus Tardrew and Jacyln 'Crackers' Nichols, who both attended and placed 1st in the Mens SUP Foil and 2nd in the Womens Wing Foil respectively, to share their insights on how the race unfolded.

We discussed a range of topics, dissecting recent races in Florida and Hood River, whilst also delving into the specifics of Downwind Foiling, Winging, Tow Foiling and charging out Jaws on the big days.
I was stoked to get the time to catch up with Austin and I think I may have even convinced him to try a deflate downwinder ππ½

A great catch up with Eric Sterman, running us through his local downwind runs, how it differs in different conditions and his progressions based on using different equipment. Eric was first exposed to foiling when working on the film crew for Robby Naish's Longest Wave Movie. This was early days and he has been through a lot of progression and learning since then.
He shares some advice on equipment and how gear will work for some people but not for others. The trick is trying a bunch of gear and seeing what clicks for you. We get into the downwind runs Eric learnt on and he gives some really good insight on different spots to chip in for the Turtle Bay Run and a few tips on angles to run as you go down the coastline. Was awesome to get a comparison on the North Shore Downwind Runs to the South Shore Downwind Runs on Oahu and how both compare to the Gorge.
All in all was a fun and chat, take some time out and enjoy this fortnight's Catch Up.

Stoked to catch up with Greg Closier, a downwind foiling pioneer, foilboard designer and participant in the first ever week long SUP downwind foiling event organised by the French Surfing Federation.
I enjoyed discussing board design with Greg, unpacking some of the runs he has downwind foiled both in Brest, France, and LA, USA, and what conditions he is looking for and what equipment he uses depending on ocean or bay runs. Towards the end we go into how the event played out, what he learnt from the experience and ways to improve it for next time.
All in all I really enjoyed catching up with Greg and look forward to joining him on some of the downwind runs we discussed and hopefully compete in some events with him down the track.

Multiple SUP Race world Champion Michael Booth joins us to discuss downwind foiling and how he really enjoyed the learning process. While it wasn't easy at first he learnt a lot of good lessons along the way that he shares with us. We discuss how winging can be a good way to help learn but it isn't necessarily for everyone. We then discuss Molokai 2 Oahu 2019 and the battle we had as we watched the foilers fly by us. We finish with a bit of a discussion on what what the future of Foiling and SUP events are going to look like and how we both feel it important to help grow it for the future generations. While I do really enjoy these chats I have had to make them a fortnightly instead of weekly occurrence as I work on my online coaching platform. I've got a good list of potential guests coming up so I am excited for what is to come. If you'd like to learn how to downwind foil I'd love to hear from you and help you undertake your journey. Finally got a female on the show and it just happened to be the first female to foil the Channel of Bones in 2018 with just one months DW Foiling experience. A great chat with the talented young women Annie where we compare prone vs SUP DW Foiling, discuss the pros and cons of a slow foil and when you are ready to upgrade to a faster foil. We discuss the rise of winging which has seen more people get into DWing but the importance of showing the wingers the freedom of gliding down the coast without the wing. We then delve into other aspects of winging, back flips and self whip ins for windy waves finishing up with a bit of insight to Annie's big wave goals for this winter out Peahi. A great chat with an inspirational young women.

We talk about some of the local runs, how equipment played a huge part in Zane's progression and how new foils, such as the RS 1300 and 1150, are making downwind foiling even more fun. We also go into a bit of surf foiling pumping technique and how wing foiling can be used to enhance your downwind run.

I had a great time chatting all things downwind with the SUP downwind guru and coach Jeremy Riggs. We went in depth on the technique of a Flatwater SUP Foil Paddle Pump, Take Off or Chip In (whatever you want to call it) and brought up the 'scoot' that Jeremy recently spoke about in his youtube and social media. We went into detail on the differences between a flatwater paddle pump to a bumpy water paddle pump and some good techniques to try in the surf zone. I tried to get Jeremy to try a Wing, Deflate, Downwinder but he is still a little sceptical but I explain why I think it could be the future. All in all was great to catch up and break down the technique of SUP Foiling with Jeremy.

We go through some of his recent trips to Tahiti and Hawaii as well as go into some of the GWA Wing Foil Tour events he has done and what he has planned. Don't worry though we bring it back to downwind foiling, talking about Molokai 2 Oahu and the Gorge Paddle Challenge back in 2019 as well as his 107km Downwinder in the South of France. Finishing with a few of his favourite spots for all his foiling disciplines and three tips for those looking to get into downwind foiling.
