Mohammed Khan, extension sugarbeet, specialist at NDSU and the University of Minnesota is here to give us an update. Mohamed, we had a wet spring and a warm summer and there's already talk about fall light conditions. Could you give us a recap of the weather's impact on the sugarbeet crop in the area.

Every year is unique in North Dakota and Minnesota. We asked for and got lots of precipitation in the form of snow and rain in April and May that delayed planting. As a matter of fact, this fast growing season was the latest we have planted the beet crop in its 96 year history in the Red River Valley. Some planting was done as late as early July. heavy winds denote the crop resulting in less than our ID population of 175 to 200 plants per acre and the crop in most areas currently use some additional rainfall to improve tonnage. Overall, relatively dry conditions since the crop was planted. Men conditions were not favorable for major road problems, such as rhizoctonia rotarod. Overall, growers have done a great job to plant most of the crop in May and June and have it ready for pre pile harvest.

What is pre-pile and when will it begin?

Pre-pile beets are those that are harvested in August and September and are processed in one to three days. About 10 to 20% of the crop is typically harvested prepared. The larger the yield potential for the crop, the greater the percentage of beets harvested in prepared. The full harvest campaign will typically start on October first, when the beets are harvested and put into huge storage piles, where the environment is kept in such a manner that the beats are either frozen or kept cooled to reduce respiration rate and reduce storage losses that can amount to millions of dollars. American crystal sugar company started pre file on August 23 MinDak Farmers Cooperative started on August 29, and southern Minnesota beet sugar cooperative will start sometime after mid September based on yield potential.

Cercospora leaf spot has been a serious and costly problem for sugarbeet growers has the warm weather and dry conditions been favorable for Cercospora.

The Cercospora beticola that causes leaf spot likes it warm and wet. The dry conditions present in the past month and especially the cool nights below 60 degrees Fahrenheit were not favorable for leaf spot. As such leaf spot disease severity has been very low. Added to that is the fact that growers are now using more leaf spot resistant varieties, especially at mindat where over 95% of your acreage are planted to very resistant variety and nearly 50% of the acreage of southern Minnesota Beetsugar cooperative have these resistant varieties as well. Growers have done a great job of controlling Cercospora leaf spot to date. However, fields should be scouted and treated until around mid September so that growers are not losing money by having late season infection that significantly reduces sugar concentration and big payment.

How important is fertilizing this time of year and what should be used. Dave Franzen NDSU extension soil science specialist has the answers. Dave, do you have some advice concerning fertilizing in the fall?

Yeah, so fall fertilizer is a normal thing in the northern plains here in North Dakota and Minnesota. Very first thing is that phosphate and potash can be applied about any time, if you're goinging strip till or if you're going to do tillage, you can put your phosphate you can put your potash on thing not to put on as a sulfur, sulfur is not a fall fertilizer has to be put on the spring, just remember that it doesn't volatilize but it can leach. And over a long period of time, the water can move even in the clay soil. So I wouldn't put any sulfur on in the fall, it's just not worth the risk of not having in sulfur, something we have to deal with all the time.

What about fields that flooded in the spring or during the growing season?
Dave Franzen 1:04
If you had fields at a flooding issue, I wouldn't put any fertilizer at all on whether I worked it or not. I mean, there were some soil to move during that period of time. If you put nitrogen on last fall, you didn't get any benefit out of it at all. That's one of the restrictions that that NDSU and University of Minnesota have had for gosh, you know, 50 years is that don't put fall nitrogen fertilizer on soils and flood and so you know, where the floods and it's not the first time is it. I've been here, what 28 years and probably four or five times and during that period of time, that same areas flooded was not worth the risk. There'll be a little bit consternation, you know, some frustration, a lot of patience and the spring. But I think that's better than having a loss every once in a while too expensive, too mu ch risk of of crop injury. Remember, when you get into spring that 100 pounds of N apply that planning time is the limit no more than that, it might have to be split, when you get to that point.

When should fall nitrogen be applied?
Dave Franzen 2:04
The risk of nitrogen converting the nitrate and then subsequent loss, 3d Nitrification, if it's a high clay soil or leaching, if it's not, is very high before October 1. So no significant nitrogen except with goes to the phosphate. Before October 1. If you have a fertilizer company that insists that you apply it in mid September, I think I would seriously look for another fertilizer company, because that's just really poor management, you shouldn't succumb to t hat kind of pressure. October 1st at the very earliest. And then only if the soil temperature gets down to 50 degrees between six and eight in the morning, you could use your nearest NDAWN site, which there's a lot of them in the sugarbeet growing area, or you can put out your old soil temperatures and make your measurements. Once that date hits and let's just assume for fun that maybe it's October 5, that's a relatively low risk date for putting on anhydrous ammonia, but not urea. So October 5, let's say in this imaginary year is okay for anhydrous. You wait till the 12 seven days later, and it's relatively low risk for banded urea. And then another week after that, which you know, in this scenario would be October 19, for broadcast urea. So the reason for that is is that when anhydrous goes in the ground and kills all the microorganisms within that area that touches including the nitrification bacteria had it takes a while for them to eat their way into the middle, you have a little bit more time. But banded urea has a little bit of an aura but not near as big and or if you just blasting it with anhydrous you delay a little bit but still it has a little bit of delay compared to broadcast but broadcast urea doesn't have any aura at all. And so you should wait to two weeks to minimize the risk. We neve r know how long the Fall is going to be. And sometimes things really stopped in late October but sometimes it can go all the way to almost Thanksgiving before any serious freezing happens. Never before October 1 When it gets down to 50 degrees for anhydrous ammonia week later for banded urea and two weeks later for broadcast urea and then when you broadcast urea, if you're putting it within a couple inches of the surface or on the surface then you need to use a NBPT urease inhibitor something with NBPT in it which is the active ingredient and what used to be called agretain.

Sugarbeet diseases have certainly not gone away, but there is some light at the end of the tunnel, Mohamed Khan, extension sugarbeet specialist at NDSU and the University of Minnesota is here to give us an update. Mohamed, what are some of the diseases that are affecting sugar beets right now.

Thanks for having me. It should be growing season is unique in the spring of 2022. We had wet conditions early with delayed planting, but this adequate moisture and warm conditions resulted in rapid emergence. There has not been much more diseases such as rhizoctonia rootrot to date. As I said since planting we have not had too much rain and standing water. However, we have absorbed some Fusarium yellows and growers are encouraged to identify fields with a conspicuous yellowing of leaves and plant use available resistant varieties. Were next the plant in those fields sugarbeet farmers biggest problem over the past six years is our Cercospora leaf spot, the most damaging leaf disease of sugarbeet in our area. We have invested a lot of resources in developing a holistic system to better manage this disease. I will be highlighting progress made our field demonstration near Foxhome Minnesota on Tuesday, August 30, starting at 10am.

What are some of the topics you'll be covering at the field demonstration.

So since 2016, Cercospora has developed resistance to many of the individual fungicides used for its control. As such, we will demonstrate the most effective mixtures for controlling the fungus. Growers will also get to observe his strategy of using fungicides with different modes of action in a rotation program that will provide season long control of Cercospora leaf spot.

Tell us about your research with the new CR plus resistant varieties.
Mohamed Khan 1:57
Absolutely. Over the past four years, research was done in the lab greenhouse and feel to better understand how best to manage sugarbeet varieties called CR plus varieties to manage our Cercospora leaf spot. These varieties have very high resistance to leaf spot. We know the CR plus varieties are not immune to Cercospora. They typically have significantly lower disease severity, and rather than requiring six to eight fungicide applications for Disease Control, it may just require two to four applications based on environmental conditions and pathogen population. At different times of the growing season. I will share our research observations from similar research that is ongoing in the northern end of the valley at St. Thomas as well as prosper and compare with the situation in the southern part of the Red River Valley.

Today, we're getting a crop update from Todd Geselius, Vice President of agriculture for the southern Minnesota beet sugar cooperative. Todd, how did this season start out for producers in southern valley,

Not unlike those of you in Red River Valley, we had a very challenging spring, lots of rain that kept us out of the field, we did have an area that was able to get some beets planted about what I would call our normal timeframe, which is towards the end of April, planting kind of get sprinkled through all the way up until last between in probably the first week of June. So very wide planting dates. And of course, that means we have a varied growth stages out in the field right now. That also impacted somewhat the stands that we're seeing, generally speaking, the early planted beats have pretty good stands in that 170 to 200 range stuff planted after that was much more variable in January speaking has less good stands. I don't think anybody would say there anything to write home about. But generally, I think they're okay.

How does inconsistent planting affect weed control?
Todd Geselius 1:14
We have very widespread glyphosate resistant waterhemp in our growing area, it really became evident this year, as we have seen in the past, you really got to get started controlling this particular weed early. Those guys who got a pre down and got a nice activating rainfall on it, they're doing pretty good on weed control, really their waterhemp is for the most part under control and looking pretty good. Those guys who chose not to do a pre or didn't get a good activation on their pre, they are struggling much more to try and get waterhemp under control. Everybody has been very diligent about using lay bys. In a lot of cases, we're seeing a lot of ultra blazer being used, that is working pretty good. I would say the key to have an ultra blazer work well in your situation is really about weed size. If you have big weeds, say six inches or more tall, you're going to be challenged to have ultimate laser control those weeds. If your weeds are smaller, four inches or less, I think you have a pretty good chance. That's a pretty valuable tool in our toolbox. Because we just don't have any other means to post emergency control waterhemp.

What about controlling Circospra Leaf Spot in your area,

Of course, for us Circospra is always a worry, those earliest planted beats are tracking as we would normally expect and those rows closed some time ago. And a lot of those fields have one or a lot of them have to Circospra fungicide applications already applied. So those beats are coming along nicely. Our DIVs the last couple of weeks have been quite high with the heat and some thunderstorms that came through give them some guys some relief from the dry. And so those areas are really need some protection, the later planet stuff, probably not at a point where the roads are closed yet. And so we really haven't started in a Circospra applications there. But with the heat and humidity that we have seen, it's not going to be long before every acre is going to need some kind of protection against Circospra, we just know it's a real battle for us here.

Are there any other tools being used to control Circospra?
Todd Geselius 3:26
We have been working with the USDA on doing some testing to see if we can detect sick cost brah actively growing and leaves before we see the actual spots on the leaf. Last week's results showed Circospra in every sample that we sent. And that is probably about 75 samples that we sent up. The week before that we had about two thirds of the samples had Circospra actively growing in them, even though we didn't see any spots on any leaves. Just this week, we have started to see spots on our leaves. And so we know that the fungus is actively growing out there. So it's time to be proactive and get ahead of that.

With all these challenges. What kind of potential do you see for the seasons crop?
Todd Geselius 4:13
I think we really have a lot of potential. It's been generally dry the last month or so. And that has really helped minimize the amount of root rot that we're seeing out in the fields. That's really critical. And so I think that's not going to hold us back. And we can really have some good growth going forward here. We're taking root samples this week. We're anxiously waiting that with the varied planting dates that we experienced this year. It's going to be interesting to see where we stack up compared to previous years.

Today we're talking with Harrison Weber, the executive director of the Red River Valley sugar beet Growers Association. He's providing an update on the sugar beet crop and the sugar program in the United States. Harrison, what are some of the struggles facing the sugar beet growers this year?

Yeah, Bruce, we've had a lot of challenges in the sugarbeet industry seems to be the year of almost seven plagues. This year, we had obviously a cool and wet spring not only at American crystal, but across the entire country. And in fact, it ended up being the longest and latest planting window that we've seen in the last 20 years. Then the next plague is once we got the beets in and we got the hot and windy weather and caused damage to a lot of beets, acquiring a number of replants. Now we're moving on to the third plague, it seems like with some of our production challenges, we got pests, disease, you know, bacteria, weeds, all kinds of different pressures. And it's really a major challenge for us. Hopefully, we're not going to see the remainder of the four plagues there. But certainly a challenge so far this year.

Are there any other issues, maybe with labor?
Harrison Weber 1:07
Yeah, Bruce, the labor market definitely have seen a shift there. It's getting really challenging during harvest, to get enough people up and down the valley on the farms, at the factories at the piling sites to really get this crop in. I estimate between seven and 10,000. People are needed just on the farms for a two three week window to get the crop off. Its truck drivers, card operators, beat toppers, pole tractors, lifter operators, fuel guys, you name it, there's all kinds of opportunities really, for people to get away from their day job and get out to the farm and help and you know, that's one of our challenges is labor and where do we go as an industry? Whether that's bigger equipment, or maybe even some automation down the road? I guess I'm not really sure. But you know, we're certainly looking at making some changes to fix those challenges.

Is crop insurance in a good place? How can we improve this safety net if things don't go well for growers?
Harrison Weber 1:57
Yeah, crop insurance, another continuous challenge all the time for us. And we're continuing to work with RMA to build on that already strong relationship that we do have with them. Working with the American sugar beet Growers Association. One success story here to one of our previous challenges that we spoke about last year is RMA really making some good changes for growers such as clarifying and improving the price election discovery process. And that's really allowed growers to have more certainty when they're making their insurance decisions in the springtime.

Now on to one of your favorite topics, the sugar program, what needs to happen to maintain a strong sugar program?
Harrison Weber 2:34
That's our bread and butter right there. Bruce, that's our biggest challenge and continuing to maintain a strong US sugar program. We've got the Farm Bill conversations have begun. We've already had several hearings hosted around the country. And it's really a continuous drumbeat for us on stressing the importance of maintaining a strong domestic industry, an industry which has worked fantastically for decades for our consumers, our customers and our Redwood Valley sugarbeet growers, even with this fantastic industry that we have. Just a couple of weeks ago, we had an attack on the sugar program in the Appropriations Committee, which actually attempted to limit USDA staff for managing the program. Bruce had situations like these where opposition wants to flood the US market with foreign subsidized sugar and drive prices down basically just to add to the large food companies bottom line. And this is definitely a challenge for us. We have the highest worker safety standards in the world, most stringent environmental programs out there, and the most efficient and effective distribution system. Why in the world would anyone want to source sugar from anywhere else? I have no idea. We're really the gold star right here in the Red River Valley. A strong US sugar program keeps our small towns vibrant whether it's Bathgate Buxton Argyle or Amenia. We can see and feel the impact that a strong sugar program makes. It helps keep the tire shop guy on the corner open the coffee hot down at the cafe are repairs and improvements at the local schools. Really maintaining a strong US sugar program is extremely vital for our region.

Harrison, how important is it to the sugar beet industry for the political parties to find common ground?
Harrison Weber 4:07
Yeah, Bruce, we've got to continue to recognize the importance of working with both political parties are rural voters shrinking each and every election cycle. We've got to come together to work with Democrats and Republicans to make sure our farms and rural communities you know really stay healthy and vibrant for many years to come. There's a lot of polarized issues out there. We've got to find a way to separate those from our farm issues and focus on our agriculture issues to stay together. Anyway, these are some of our challenges. And you know, like I said last year, and they'll say it again this year their challenges but I'm always looking at them as opportunities for success.

Throughout the sugarbeet growing season, sugar beet growers have a tiny adversary in the form of the sugar beet root maggot. This year their numbers have soared. Mark Boetel NDSU. Extension Entomologist has the latest information concerning the sugar beet root maggot Mark last year growers faced a 15 year high sugarbeet maggot population. What's the root maggot situation like this year,

Unfortunately, again this year, we have very high infestations in much of the valley. It's likely worse than last year, which was the 15 year high. We've really got a battle on our hands. We're well past peak now in all areas of the valley. But we do have some persistent what we might even call hotspots in the area. So still kind of a watch there that people should keep an eye on in case fields need to be retreated. The tallied numbers will be a little bit deceptive this year because of all the wind events that we had right around peak. So the first Valley wide peak appears to have happened between June 12 and 13th, which would be considered right on about average. But probably the true peak was a week later. Valley wide that's impacted by latitude The southern areas peak earlier. That would have been around the 19th and 20th of June. That wind also accompanied by stormy weather, probably impeded growers abilities to time that their insecticide applications correctly so that could have been a challenge for some growers.

Where are the hotspots this year? There are a lot of them.

And I don't really have all of them on the list here but this gives a good sampling that would be Auburn Argyle Bathgate, Cavalier, klimax Crookston, Crystal Drayton Glaston, the Grand Forks area, Hansel Hoople, Reynolds Saban, which is an older site, we've seen problems before, but that's kind of popped back on the map in a huge way this year. And then our traditional St. Thomas, and then Thompson as well.

What's going on with root maggot right now,

They're just getting in full swing, really, with the larval feeding injury. So plants that are in unprotected fields, or maybe those late planted fields for the plants are really small, those under heat stress will be wilting in some, unfortunately, the plants will be dying as well. There are a lot of those fields. So hopefully those late planted fields. So hopefully growers do have good protection on with an insecticide of some form. And then these sporadic rainfall events that we're having, that may certainly help save some of those fields.

Mark, can this year's problems guide growers and management decisions for next year?
Mark Boetel 2:50
They sure can. We know very well, where those hotspots are we're going to go into the fall and root injury rate those fields and so that'll give us a very good idea of what and where for the surviving group maggot larvae be really important for growers in affected areas to attend our winter grower seminars. We'll also create and post a forecast for next year, online at NDSU as well as in the production guide and other outlets. But growers in affected areas really need to get to our winter grower seminar so we can help give them good tips on how to manage this pest.

Unfortunately, not as much detail as they'd like we're still trying to work out the exact timing but it'll be late July st. Thomas, North Dakota. It's the same section that we've had our plot tour for the last 10 plus years. Sort of probably be that last week in July. We've got 10 experiments on root maggot control, USDA will likely be presenting on their plant breeding research as well. And we'll have a free lunch and refreshments for people to enjoy as well.

Our growers have demonstrated patience, perseverance, and for perspicacity to make sure that the planted ones and that it worked out well. It has they will wet conditions in April May and into June resulted in fields near banks and waterways too wet to be planted. It is estimated that we planted about 98% of the acres a shortfall of 2%. Overall planting was probably the latest in our 95 years of planting sugarbeet in the valley. We have some fields that are well established with our recommended population of 200 plants per 100. For a row in areas affected by crusting and or heavy winds. We have low populations of about 100 plants per 100 for a row. Once we take care of the weeds, insect pests and diseases, we should have a fear crop to harvest starting in August.

It's reported that the number of sugarbeet root maggot flies are high, especially in the northern Red River Valley. How serious is this pest?

The sugarbeet would make an adult the flies have really increased their numbers over the past five years. It is likely to deflate numbers this year will probably be the highest over the past 15 years. Fly numbers earlier were reported at over 100 flies per stick. It is unfortunate that we do not have lorsban insecticide as one of our tools to control the adult flight population. If a grower were unable to apply an insecticide earlier, because of unfavorable environmental conditions, that grower may try a ban application of climate to coincide just before a rainfall event as a last resort to manage the damaging population of root maggots.

What else should sugarbeet producers be doing at this time?

Growers should be controlling their weed populations, especially when the weeds are still small. We have limited weed options in sugarbeet. So we encourage our producers to use all available herbicides and other crops in rotation to manage some of our difficult to control weeds such as kosher, which is easier to manage in wheat. growers should also be scouting for other diseases, and record your presence to develop management strategies in subsequent years, or breeders have done a phenomenal job of developing tolerant varieties to several of our major pathogens. Growers should make use of these improved varieties to manage diseases such as Fusarium and Rhizomania that cannot be controlled with fungicides.

Producers had a late start, the weeds are more challenging. The insects are crazy. How do you see the outlook?

It is going to be a tough year but I am an eternal optimist. I'm still hoping that all will go well with the growing degree days. Once a week moisture and by the middle of August we will start preparing sugarbeet the phrase should be good. So that will make our growers happy. Have a safe growing season. It may be short, but let us all hope it is sweet.

We do really have a pretty significant maggot problem on our hands. And then as far as the cold winter goes, unfortunately, they're very cold tolerant. So the winter likely had zero effect on their survival. So we've got on our hands what we dealt with in 21. So the previous years surveys on flat counts can tell us a lot not only the severity, the potential but also the locales of where those populations could be. So that gives us an idea where we can kind of zero in and know where we're gonna have problems this year.

getting things going with plants, not only plants, but also insects as sugarbeet root maggot degree de units are still averaging we're probably somewhere around a week behind the historical averages. Although the maggots are behind average or normal, if you want to call it that the plants are also quite behind. In many fields, there are a lot of leak planted fields. So that's going to be a concern. Unfortunately, the plants are even farther behind average than the root maggot, those tiny plants in those late planted fields are going to be very susceptible to attack from insect injury.

As usual, I know it's early Mark, but can you give us a rough idea when peak fly might occur?

Sure, and it is somewhat of an early forecast here yet. So I want to give that a little bit of a grain of salt. But in the southern Valley, we're looking at somewhere between the 15th and 17th for peak fly in the the Central Valley moving up between Hillsborough Ada, Grand Forks area may be part of that area, the 17th to the 19th of June, and then the northern Valley, including some areas around Grand Forks and then all the way north to Canadian border, somewhere between the 21st and 23rd of June. We'll know a whole lot more next week as we accumulate more degree day units so we can zero in on a much closer forecast at that point.

Where are the maggots showing up so far?

Yeah, the early hotspots we're seeing right now includes Auburn Cashel crystal Drayton up way up north, and we're seeing some in the Cavalier area as well. Moving down south in the East Grand Forks and Reynolds area, as well as some additional areas of North include St. Thomas, of course, the perennial hotspot, and then oak wood as well. But that list is short right now. And it's definitely going to grow as time goes in the next couple of weeks.

Okay, Mark. Now for the million dollar question. What can growers do to manage the root maggot problems,
Mark Boetel 3:07
Growers in high risk areas should plan just expect that they're going to need to put on a post emergence insecticide given this year how late a lot of fields are planted, that's just really should be an assumption. Post granules should be applied as soon as we're able to. There are some limitations there. Because plants are so tiny, we have to consider insecticide load on those little plants as well as running an implement like a rotary hoe through the field, you don't want to tear them up too much or cover up the plants. So once we get to about the Four Leaf states, they should be ready to treat and granules work well as long as you get a rainfall afterward, anywhere and the application can be made anywhere between one and two weeks ahead of peak fly. And even shortly a couple of days before peak if necessary. post emergence liquid liquid insecticides on the other hand need to be sprayed much closer to peak fly we want to have a lot of fly activity in the field. So we get good mortality. So somewhere between two and four days ahead of peak fly, and then follow up survey the field and Repeat if necessary a couple of days after peak fly.

What are the insect issues we should be concerned about right now,

your early season we're always concerned about springtails wire worms and sometimes cut worms as well. We had problems with springtails and cut worms last year. This year I'm already hearing reports of where we're in problems. So that's something to watch out for. springtails are notoriously a problem in cool wet springs like we're having this year symptomology to watch for with most of those passes uneven or poor seedling emergence, maybe irregular patches of non uniform growth or even plants wilting and dying in those areas. One would want to be inspecting and seeing what's going on.

If growers have problems with these pests, what can be done

with springtails and wireworms. There's no rescue option. So really, replanting is the only option. With a known problem like that, you'd want to make sure you're going back in with some form of insecticide protection either in the form of a seed treatment, or a AP plant insecticide and then cut worms, you can be keeping an eye out for them. If you're seeing clipped plants and a foliar application usually have a pyrethroid insecticides should do a pretty good job on them.

Root maggots for bad and 2021 Can we expect similar problems this year? Yes,

unfortunately, 2021 was a exceptionally bad year for the root maggot or I guess it was a good year for them bad year for us. We're trying to grow them that beets. And yeah, in fact, we've been running a systematic monitoring program for quite some time now. 2021 was the worst year for root maggot fly activity in the last 15 years. So we've got a real problem on our hands. And so a lot of fields based on what happened last year are going to be at high risk. And then if you put into the equation also that we have late planted beets this year, those plants are going to be small and very vulnerable to attack from a myriad of insect pests. But certainly, the root maggot would not be an exception to that. I know we're behind average on planting and degree day units and things like that. But really, I believe our plants are going to be farther behind than the root maggots are. So they're going to be small and very susceptible to injury. As far as what to expect this year where we're going to see probably the most problems. I would say in North Dakota, we're looking at Auburn Buxton, Cavalier crystals, Drayton, Grand Forks, Reynolds, Thompson, and St. Thomas. And then on the Minnesota side, we've got Ada, Argyle, klimax, Crookston, East Grand Forks and Kenedy that are looking like they're pretty high risk. Any other spots that maybe grower experienced very high fly activity, and neighboring fields would be at risk this year as well. We're going to be keeping an eye on activity, of course, as we've done for many years, we're collaborating again this year with American crystal, we're going to be monitoring those populations and around 150 fields this year, and those counts that are going to be posted three times per week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. As soon as the counts come in, they're posted online, on the NDSU website. Look for that as well. It's very easily found through any search engine online. Just search for NDSU root maggot fee, add the word counts, you're leaving more likely.

I know it's early mark. But can you give us a rough idea when peak fly might occur? You're correct.

It is very early to do a very precise prediction. So we don't want to stick our necks out too far. But I can say right now we're at about five days behind the average on Remagen degree day King relations. I looked at the extended weather forecast and we're looking at some more cool weather mixed with warm weather, we're not going to accumulate a lot of degree days. So it's looking like the peaks are likely to be probably anywhere from maybe five to even 10 days later than last year easily a week later than normal than average. So we'll have a lot better idea as we move forward through the calendar and then next week, and I'll be posting those kinds of things and all the Ag media including the NDSU crop and test report. Ag radio and the sugar co ops have their texting system also that'll keep people updated.

No, we have a small number of growers with 30 inch rows. We've had a very wet spring and heavy rainfall in April and May and that's delayed sugarbeet planting. At this point, what kind of planting advice do you have for sugarbeet producers.
Mohamed Khan 1:26
Ideally, it is best to plant sugarbeet in our region in April to get a long as possible growing season. Unfortunately, wet field conditions have delayed planting. We all need to wait until fields dry out to facilitate planting. Girls have ordered the best sugarbeet seed varieties for their respective fields. There will be adequate moisture and a relatively warm seed bed that will facilitate rapid and uniform seedling emergence after planting. These conditions will mean that seedling emergence will likely be higher than 70% rather than the 62%. We typically get with early planting in cooler soils, higher plant populations from a normal seeding rate. We'll be able to utilize the available moisture and nitrogen to provide a high quality crop with acceptable tonnage.

Is there any practice you recommend to protect sugarbeet seedlings?

Yes, the use of cover crops such as oats, barley and wheat helped to prevent reduction in plant stand from high winds reduce soil erosion, and also help to conserve moisture after they are killed off herbicide. I encourage growers to use cover crops, especially in fields that are known to have a history of blowing during high wind events which is common in spring.

This year cool temps and excess moisture prevents farmers from accessing their sugarbeet fields. So what about weed control strategies? Tom Peters NDSU and University of Minnesota Extension. sugarbeet agronomist joins us to talk about weed control options. Tom, how does delayed field access affect weed management?

Well, first of all, Bruce, it's interesting. We do this every year. And a year ago, we were talking about how dry it was and how our drought conditions are going to affect weeds. A year later now we're talking about delayed planting and effects the weather has on weeds. So I think there's two messages that I want to make here. So first of all weeds germinate and emerge at different times. And the second point is, when our temperatures start to warm up and the calendar date start to move into May, the biggest difference Bruce's is there's more days when the temperature is higher. And that means higher or greater soil temperatures. So the combination of both the types of weeds and the temperatures of soils is really what's going on right now for us.

Let's focus on sugarbeet. Can you give us some kind of example.

Okay, so let's go back to those principles that we were visiting about. Let's overlay four important weeds. So we're gonna start with common lambsquarters and Kosha. Common lambsquarters and Kosha, germinate and emerge early in the season. They're the first ones we see. And they're hard to tell apart back in May and April. In many years, we eliminate them with tillage. In a year where we plant early, maybe not so much, maybe those weeds avoid tillage. But certainly in 2022, with our late planting season, we're going to be telling a lot of those weeds out. So that's a good news story. Now for the other side of it waterhemp and common ragweed, they germinate a little later. And matter of fact, with waterhemp, it's going to be germinating and emerging at the same time, we're going to be planting sugar beets. So the combination of doing the tillage to disturb the soil. And all of that moisture means that we're going to have to be really timely about how we apply herbicides. Since we have a lot of weed resistance, we're going to need to be using soil applied herbicides at planning time, and I'm encouraging our producers to incorporate them just to be sure they're activated for when the weeds germinate and emerge.

Some of our producers use fall seated cover crops to protect the soil over winter. What is the status of cover crops? Could they potentially get too big?
Tom Peters 3:15
Again, several messages here. On the positive side, our producers have embraced the use of cover crops. And that's good. Because again, back to 2021, we had a number of days where the dry soil blew around. So Cover crops are helping about that. But here's the thing, Bruce, in a normal year, we would be terminating those cover crops right now. And guess what the winter rye is actively growing, it's enjoying these cool wet temperatures that we've been having. So it's starting to get big. My message is is that we have to actively manage them. Don't turn your back on winter, I actively manage it. And remember that at least for a while, our sugar beets are going to have to coexist with the cover crop. So don't allow it to get too big. If it is getting big. We may want to terminate it even before we plant which is different than the way it usually is. But it's a consequence again of our later planting season.

Throughout the sugarbeet growing season sugarbeet planting is right around the corner, producers need to take some time to prepare their fields for planting date friends and NDSU extension soil science specialist has some advice for prepping your field. Dave, when it comes to field preparation, is it the same as usual? Or is there anything unique about this spring?

The unique thing about this year is that thank goodness, a lot of people are starting to embrace stripped Hill, especially in the northern Valley. And that's huge. So these people didn't have soil blowing like the neighbors did. This all kept in place the snow was more uniform across their field. Even though people think that people are in no till or modified no till getting in the field after they do. what reality is, is that with the snow kept on the field, the fence rows aren't nearly as deep. Were the people that are in conventional till and they have a fence row where every mile or so that are almost inconsequential. Those snow drifts are 20 feet deep. The people that are in those no till strip till systems, they don't have hardly any drift alongside their hedgerow and so they can get in the field very, very soon, they don't have the big drifts. And so they don't have dry and they will have wet and they have a more even water across the field. So we'll start with a stripped Hill first. And let's with stripped Hill, all that people have to do is go ahead and play it. So whenever you're going to play up the plant and sugar beets into the strip after the corn, which I've seen quite a bit of it last year, then you just plant the sugar beets into that you don't prep them at all, you just go across the the planter it's ready to go. It's just as warm and just as dry as a conventional till neighbor, but you actually had to keep your soil you got to keep your fertilizer, where's your neighbor didn't if they're not scratching their heads wondering how much fertilizer they lost you should be.

What about preparing conventional fields.

So we get the conventional fields, a little bit of patience is okay is probably a good thing, especially those that have three rows ahead 20 foot drifts on them. But I think most people know that especially when we start getting higher clay that less is more. So there's no reason to go across a field twice. To get the field ready to plant those fields are probably pretty flat anyway with the wind and all the moisture and everything. So once slightly across the field and then plant in go very shallow, they'll go very deep, you go very deep and you bring up all this muck and your stand will be horrible. That's the plan.

There are farmers that haven't tried strip tilling, what can they do to learn more,
Dave Franzen 2:37
since growers are so far successfully performing strip till, and there's some strip tilling the area. And there's some to observe farmers without doing it and still have reservations about going to a system like that should keep their eyes open, see how it's gone. Don't stop every time that you drive by and you know, bother the person but at least keep an eye on it. And then I'm sure that there'll be field tours in the area probably next August or so in fields or sugarbeet and fields around there other crops. So keep your eyes open for them to actually walk in the fields and talk to people that are doing it and learn a little bit from them and see if somehow that you can adapt it to your operation so your soil doesn't blow to France or something next year.

This is the sugarbeet report, bringing you the latest information from NDSU. Throughout the sugarbeet growing season, how should sugarbeet producers respond to rising fertilizer prices? Today we're talking with Dave friends and yes, you extension soil science specialist. Dave, the price of nitrogen is pretty high, what nutrient changes do producers need to consider,

and a lot of our crops in North Dakota and even corn in Minnesota, as the nitrogen price goes up, their rate of nitrogen recommended is reduced. But that's not the case with sugarbeet, you're pretty much doomed to a recommendation no matter what the nitrogen cost is. So hopefully, the price of sugar will stay up. And so everybody's in good shape. So generally, what the recommendation is, is if your personal soil sampling is sampling to two feet, then we look at 100 pounds total. And we subtract the soil test from that any previous crop credits, let's say from soybeans, for example, and then shoot for a total of 100 pounds, if you're going to four feet and the recommendation is 130 pounds less all the credits, we assume with those recommendations, there's usually somewhere around 30 pounds of nitrogen on the two to four foot level. And that's what the differences between those two recommendations. So don't vary the recommendations based on the nitrogen cost. I know it's insane. But for one thing, the residual nitrates from last fall is higher than normal. So I think that the rate of nitrogen that you're going to use for your sugar beets is going to be modest. And so the cost isn't going to be there terrible.

What are your recommendations for applying phosphate,
Dave Franzen 1:33
the phosphate is a little bit different story, the phosphate price is also very high, it's about $1 a pound for p 205, which is more than double what it was last year and triple what it was a few years ago. So what I would do is I would seriously consider that three gallons of 1034 or something like your recommendation that we have. And then if you have a broadcast recommendation that's recommended on top of that, and I would probably reduce it by a substantial amount, maybe by half. Because the return that you're gonna get from the phosphate is a lot more models considered what we have with the nitrogen in certainly this is not a build up maintenance here. This is a year to kind of get through it and see if the phosphate price settles down a little bit. So what do you recommend for potash? On the potash end of things, we have recommendations in the circular that are based on the clay content. And so if you have a high smectite Light ratio, then we're probably looking at about 150 PPM as a critical value for potassium and a lot of sugarbeet growers are going to be in that but we do have some sugarbeet growers are in more sandy areas. And so some potash may need to be applied. If I was gonna apply potash, I wouldn't apply less than 100 pounds of 00 60. Because the distance between the particles, the fertilizer protocols is far enough. Once you get less than that, that maybe some plants won't be able to take advantage of it and you will in sugarbeet to very responsive, the potash so you have to keep that in mind.

And what about the use of sulfur, I recommend

sulfur for small grains and for corn, the sugar beets unless you're in an area that you've identified before, I really wouldn't worry about it too much. They're just so deep rooted, most of our soils are going to get into that sulfate groundwater area. And so we really don't see a whole lot of problem with that. The exception to that would be maybe St. Thomas. We've seen some hints of sulfur deficiency before and with the water we had last fall on the snow we've had this winter. I think maybe in those kinds of areas where you had a fine sandy loam, so I think that's good.

Let's talk about best practices for getting those high profits. First of all, what should the grower do as a first step and considering field selection?

Select your best fields for sugarbeet and shoulders proper drainage, or else the environment will become favorable for soil borne diseases later in the season. Prepare a friable well drain and weed free seed bed and fertilize in the fall or spring based on a soil test.

Are there any specific requirements you suggest for seed and seedling protection?

Yes, when ordering seeds, make sure seeds are critical fungicides such as Kobina, Sustiva, and vibrance. That will give protection against rhizoctonia damping off that your garden that will give protection against often MIT's dapping off and insecticidal seed treatments that will control common insects such as root maggot and wireworms. Fields with a history of sugarbeet wood Maga will also need a granular insecticide at planting, as well as protection just before peak fly activity.

We have limited options for weed control, so we have to be careful and strategic. Since all of our growers use crop rotation, use herbicides that are more available in rotating crops to control herbicide resistant weeds in a sugarbeet crop start weed control already. Start with a weed free seed bed. Use a pre emergent a soil incorporated or lead by herbicide were possible. For post emergent herbicide applications. Start when weeds are small and continue until road closure. If necessary. Use mechanical weed control and or labor to keep the weed seed population as low as possible.

Together, they will plant about 653,000 acres, which represents about 56% of the total use sugarbeet production, the total overall acreage may be slightly lower than 2021. What are some of the basic practices growers can follow to have a successful sugarbeet crop.

growers can continue efforts at improving efficiency by ensuring that planting is done properly prepared and weed free seed beds by using adequate seeding and fertilizer rate and uniform seeding space to start with a good population to give the crop a solid foundation. Girls have the option of using several effective fungicidal seed treatments to control rhizoctonia ceiling damping off that can be problematic in warm and wet conditions soon after planting. Girls with a history of alpha mices in your fields are advised to apply and incorporate precipitated calcium carbonate, since this will give protection from chronic root rot for about 12 years. And to use touch garden seek treatment to prevent seedling dumping off in the northern River Valley and other areas where sugarbeet maggot is an issue. growers have the option of using insecticidal seed treatments where insect population is relatively low, and a plant insecticides where root maggot population is known to be higher. We need to be smart and ensure that we do a good job of planting preferably once so that we lay the foundation for a good sugarbeet crop

The outlook for sugar on the world market based on geopolitical situation is that there will be a tight market. It is expected that Brazil may use more of their keen production for ethanol. It is not known how the calamity in Ukraine will impact its sugar production and how sanctions will impact sugar export from Russia.

You're correct. We have about 37% of North Dakota still on the drought. Fortunately, growers of sugarbeet in western North Dakota have access to irrigation. Otter sugarbeet production areas, including eastern North Dakota, the Red River Valley and southern Minnesota have had more moisture and will be ready for planting in April. Of course, we are expecting May June rains to help us get our water table up for all our producers.

As an eternal optimist, I hope for some much needed rainfall, especially in our dry western areas. Average Daily soil temperature at the foreign soil depth reached into the mid 30s in mid March, but then dip to the low 30s last week. I hope we do get some rains before planting and regular rainfall during the season. Should the dry weather continue. I will encourage sugarbeet producers to plant into a stale seed bed to conserve moisture and take steps early for weed control to prevent weeds from competing for moisture. It may be useful to increase seeding rate to ensure one has a good population that is required to have a bountiful sugarbeet crop. Stay safe and have a bumper and sweet 2022 sugarbeet crop.

Sugarbeet diseases have certainly not gone away and unfortunately, thre is a new one on the horizon. Mohamed Khan, Extension Sugarbeet Specialist at NDSU and the University of Minnesota, is here to give an update.
Mohamed, what are some of the diseases that affected sugarbeets this year?
Mohamed:
Some of the common diseases that affected sugarbeet crop include Rhizoctonia root rot, Aphanomyces root rot, Fusarium yellows, Cercospora leaf spot and a possible new disease caused by Sclerotinia.
Bruce:
What causes Rhizoctonia and how can you manage this disease?
Mohamed:
The fungus, Rhizoctonia solani, causes Rhizoctonia damping-off and root rot of sugarbeet. All commercial seeds now have a fungicidal seed treatment that typically will provide early season protection from damping-off. The use of a Post application at the 4 to 6 leaf stage with a fungicide such as azoxystrobin provides protection from Rhizoctonia root rot. Growers are encouraged to continue their use of crop rotation with a non-host such as wheat and barley to reduce inoculum pressure. Most importantly, growers should use improved Rhizoctonia resistant varieties in fields with a history of the disease. ca

What can you tell us about Aphanomyces?
Mohamed:
Aphanomyces damping-off and root rot are caused by Aphanomyces cochlioides. This pathogen must get free water in the soil to cause infection. Dry conditions throughout the growing season will mean that Aphanomyces will not be a problem this year. Growers with fields with a history of this disease are encouraged to apply and incorporate precipitated calcium carbonate from sugarbeet factories at 5 to 10 tons per acre in the fall preceding the sugarbeet crop. Soils treated with this product will be protected for over 10 years.
Bruce:
What can growers do to control Fusarium yellows?
Mohamed:
Currently, there is no fungicide that will control Fusarium yellows in sugarbeet. As such, growers should ensure that fields with a history of Fusarium should be properly recorded and use Fusarium resistant varieties in those fields. Growers now have access to a large number of Fusarium resistant varieties that are also high yielding with high recoverable sucrose.
Bruce:
It has been hot and dry with many days in the 90s. How is Cercospora progressing under these conditions?
Mohamed:
Temperature over 93 degrees F and dry conditions are not favorable for the development of Cercospora leaf spot. As such, Cercospora has not been a major problem to date and growers have done an excellent job of using fungicides in keeping this disease under control. We now have improved CLS resistant varieties that need less fungicides –this will be a game changer for the industry. My research trials over the past 3 years indicate we can use about 50 to 70% less fungicides with the new varieties to manage Cercospora without impacting yield and quality.
Bruce:
What can you tell us about Sclerotinia in sugarbeet?
Mohamed:
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum typically causes white mold in soybeans, edible beans, and sunflower. We recently documented that this fungus can also infect sugarbeet leaves as well as roots. Last year, the foliar form of the disease was found in all growing areas of ND and MN. We also found the root form in the disease in both states. The foliar form of the disease is most common and appears to be less damaging than the root infection. I have observed the foliar form of the disease in both ND and MN and need to evaluate how widespread it is. The best way to reduce this problem is to avoid planting sugarbeet the year after soybean, edible beans, or sunflower, especially if these crops had white mold. Much research is needed to understand the biology of this fungus on sugarbeet and how best to manage a new pathogen.
Bruce:
What should sugarbeet growers be doing at this time?
Mohamed:
Growers need to plan management strategy early to manage diseases – planning should start with field and variety selection. Fields with diseases at this time should be recorded so that appropriate varieties and production practices will be used the next time these fields go into sugarbeet.
Pre-pile will start around the week of August 23and will continue until the full campaign starts in October. Please follow all safety rules at harvest and when transporting and piling beets. Have a good and safe harvest.

Bruce: It's been a challenging growing season and to top it off Cercospora leaf spot is hanging around. Mohamed Khan, Extension Sugarbeet Specialist at NDSU and the University of Minnesota is here to give us an update. Mohamed, it's hot, dry and smoky with an abundance of sunshine but not much significant rainfall. How is the sugarbeet crop and what should sugarbeet growers be doing right now?
Mohamed: The growers are getting ready the defoilaters and harvest already for pre-pile. This is where beets are harvested starting in August and are processed in about two days. American Crystal have a working pre-pile date of August 19th which would mean the growers will start harvesting around August 17th to supply the factories. Growers at Minn-Dak Sugarbeet Cooperative in southern Minnesota plan to start the pre-pile during the week of August 23rd. There are still two months for crop growth so adequate sunshine, warm days and cool nights. And a weekly rain. At this time it would take a monthly rain. It will improve the prospect for a good sugarbeet crop.
Bruce: What exactly is cercospora leaf spot?
Mohamed: It is the most devastating foliar disease of sugarbeet in Minnesota and North Dakota. It is caused by the fungus Cercospora beticola which overwinters infected sugarbeet leaves. The fungus damages the leaves which are the photosynthetic factories of the plants and thus lower tonnage and reduces the sugar resulting in lower economic returns. The Cercospora inoculum population is very high because of severe disease since 2016 and especially in 2020. The disease develops rapidly in the temperatures of 77 to 90 degrees and night temperature is above 60 degrees in the presence of prolonged moisture in the form of rainfall or dew. We have been very warm and dry so conditions have not been very favorable for disease development. Growers have done a great job of keeping their fields relatively free of this disease. Continued scouting and timely fungicide applications will result in a season where cercospora is successfully controlled.
Bruce: Are growers using the new cercospora varieties and how are they performing?
Mohamed: Yes growers are indeed using the new and improved CLS varieties especially at Minn-Dak. We were about 60% of the acreage has planted these varieties and also southern Minnesota. Based on feedback from producers, agriculturalists and my own observations from my field research, the new varieties are doing well at reducing disease severity. Hopefully more of these varieties will become available to growers to have an excellent tool for managing Cercospora beticola.
Bruce: Any final thoughts?
Mohamed: Yes since pre-pile will start in mid-August, growers should plan their fungicide application, taking into consideration pre-harvest intervals for fields that would be harvested early- that is from mid-august - and ensure fungicide protection continues to September for those fields that will go to full harvest that will start in early October. This is the Sugarbeet Report, bringing you the latest sugarbeet information from NDSU throughout the sugarbeet growing season. Today, a crop update from Joe Hastings, agronomist for the American crystal sugar cooperative. Joe, going into this crop year, what were you seeing for potential?
Joe Hastings 0:18
We had a dry fall and drier winter. So we were very much anticipating the early planting, which is great for us. It really gives us a lot of potential for that sugarbeet crop we lead time with that. And that did happen. Our average planting date was earlier than the last two years and we averaged April 29 for that date. So we're very happy with that. However this current drought situation has impacted the crops potential as well.

Considering the drought hasn't led up, how are the sugarbeets holding out?
Joe Hastings 0:45
So it started this spring, we were cool and dry. And it really was tough to get even nice emerging beets. And to have even stands as critical as sugarbeets, they got a little bit gappy, different sizes. So it's very frustrating as well. We had some wind events that came up and took some more beets out. The frost events this past year, weren't they It was cold, but we didn't see that impact the beets as much as the wind and the dry soil conditions did. The heat kicked in with those wind events. And that really puts some extra stress on the sugarbeets as well. All in all, we had about 18,000 acres replanted this year, which is higher than average, past average was 9,000 acres. So we were a little bit higher than that. Granted, we have a lot of other fields with less than ideal stands and a lot of fields that didn't turn out too bad. So they're not all horrible that way. But all in all, we're sitting decent. Looking at this drought this year, we're about 40 to 50% of average rainfall, correlate that there were five to six inches short right now of rain that we haven't received to date. But one positive thing with that is we have a nice shaped root on the sugar beet it's going down 6-8 feet, access in the soil moisture can just to maintain as well as grow a bit. And they're disease-free as well. So we don't have a lot of root rot disease impacting the crop right now. But in general whole valley really needs a nice rain, a nice, good soaker, maybe a few of them to really keep this crop potential moving forward.

Cercospora leaf spot was a huge problem last year, how are the dry conditions affecting disease development?
Joe Hastings 2:20
Yeah, very, very severe year for Cercospora. And our growing region last year, which resulted in a lot of inoculum carrying over into this cropping season. So we were very concerned about that going into this year. With the dry weather conditions, we thought okay, maybe it's not going to be such a problem and probably isn't with these dry conditions. But surprisingly, we found Cercospora or the first Cercospora spots, about the same time as we did last year. So right before the Fourth of July, we started seeing the first Cercospora spots. The growers they knew from experience last year, they had to go out and get this protective fungicide application on so a lot of applications happened right prior to the Fourth of July or right after the Fourth of July this year, which is great. And that's what we've been talking about growers all winter long, we got to do a protective and be ahead of the Cercospora but not let it get rolling. And so right now, you can kind of tell when we do get some rain events or higher humidity, we have some high daily infection values on those days as well and ramps up pretty quick with the heat we've had. So just be on task, be on time and continue it so we don't want Cercospora getting established in the field.

What kind of crop size estimate do you have right now?
Joe Hastings 3:30
Well, our initial estimate from our ag staff came in at 26.1 on July 1. So granted, you know, we're assuming average rainfall and everything going the rest of the year and we've been below average. Still, we might see that estimate dip a little bit, maybe not much. But to help us dial in this crop a little bit closer, we started taking our yield sample polls on Monday this week. We're going to get the results here later this week and see where we're at. And we're going to continue doing that throughout the remaining growing season just attract this crop and see how the drought's impact has as far as growth from week to week, etc. Just to dial that in a bit more.

What do you think just a few tiny rains might do for the sugarbeet crop?

I think it helps maintain this potential going forward. Yeah, we're able to access some moisture but it's tough moisture to get you know, we got to make it a lot easier on these beets to finish out this season. Still got that great potential of early planting dates. So they're established. But yeah, timely rains. As we saw last year, we got dry towards the end of the year. And we saw that crop potential fall off drastically. So we we need to keep it going. It'll be amazing if we could get an inch a week would be awesome right now.

Today we're talking with Harrison Weber, the Executive Director of the Red River Valley SugarBeet Growers Association. He will be updating us on the sugarbeet crop and the sugar program in the United States. Harrison, what are some of the challenges sugarbeet growers have faced so far this year?
Harrison:
Bruce, lots of challenges in the sugar beet industry. Lots of things going on in our world and first we can talk about some of the production challenges we’re facing. Weather comes to mind almost immediately. We were excessively wet in 2019 and now we're on the far end of the spectrum on the other way.
Weed control, particularly waterhemp, you know what products we have available now what are we going to have available in the future? This year we were able to get a Section 18 emergency label for a product called Ultra Blazer to help with some of the water hemp hot spots up and down the valley. Fusarium, rhizoctonia and our big one, Kasra. We're doing a lot of grower-funded research through the research and education board on these areas to make sure we can raise a healthy and profitable crop.
You know going in the harvest we need a lot of help up and down the valley to get this crop in. What does the labor market look like? Lots of things are on growers’ minds.
Bruce:
Harrison, how is the battle going for grower’s trying to use Glyphosate or dicamba?
Harrison:
At the federal level, again, even more challenges. Obviously Glyphosate litigation. Unfortunately there's a lot of misinformation that's just flat-out false and not backed by data or science which has gotten spread very quickly. There's even an entire industry that has developed whose role is just to attack the tools that farmers have access to so we're challenged with pushing back and making sure we have various tools available.
Dicamba has been another one in the news a lot. In sugarbeets we have a triple stack sugar beet that staged to come out the next couple years that's resistant to dicamba. What does that look like for growers in the future? Are we going to have access to that?
Bruce:
Is crop insurance in a good place? How can we improve the safety net if things don't go well for growers?
Harrison:
Through the American Sugarbeet Growers Association we've developed a strong relationship with RMA and they've been very open to ideas and willing to work with us for our growers.
Bruce:
Let's talk about consumer demand. What are the future trends will we see? Any type of growth?
Harrison:
Our country in the US here is the third largest sugar consuming country in the world. We are working with the Sugar Association to push back on these misconceptions that sugar has to ultimately tell people that real sugar is in naturally grown product that's produced by actual farmers and not in some lab and under a microscope.
Bruce:
Now on to one of your favorite topics- the sugar program. What needs to happen to maintain a strong sugar program?
Harrison:
One of our biggest challenges is maintaining a strong US sugar program. It's a continuous drum beat here at home and in DC. Our opposition is absolutely ruthless in their attempts to undermine a program that has worked for consumers, customers and farmers.
Right now, oday, opposition groups are going around Congress and trying to gain support for various amendments to attach to bills which would flood the US market with foreign subsidized sugars.
Our growers have invested in technology on our farms, our factories in our distribution system, which has created the most efficient system in the world. We can out-compete any sugar grower in the world but we cannot compete with entire governments and their treasuries. That's why we need to maintain a strong US sugar program to put our growers right here in the Red River Valley on a level playing field.
Along with the strong US sugar program is maintaining the suspension agreements with Mexico. The agreements have proven effective and work for our growers and the Mexican Government.
Everyone is happy except for the sweetener users who want to open up the floodgates. Heck, we even argue that if we gave the sugar away for free, your sugar-containing product wouldn't be any cheaper.
Bruce:
Are sugar prices a Republican or Democrat issue?
Harrison:
You know Bruce, as Agriculture, we need to work with both sides of the political aisle. The rural vote is getting smaller and smaller and we have got to come together to work with both Democrats and Republicans to make sure we keep our farms and rural communities healthy, vibrant and strong for years to come.
Bruce:
Harrison, do you have any final thoughts?
Harrison:
Bruce, that's kind of some of our challenges we face as we sit here today. We are well-positioned to be on offense for all of these issues. We have a strong team in DC going to work every day for our growers and of course have some of the absolute best grower leaders in the world right here who are willing to pick up the phone or jump on a plane and help explain why these issues are so important to our farms and families to various members of Congress.
Sure, we have challenges in our industry but I'd kind of like to think of them as opportunities for the future.
