New Series: The Passing of the Armies : an account of the final campaign of the Army of the Potomac, based upon personal reminiscences of the Fifth army corps.
JOSHUA LAWRENCE CHAMBERLAIN,
who won distinction both as a soldier and as
a citizen, for the State of Maine, and for the
whole country, was born in Brewer, Maine,
September 8, 1828. His parental lineage is traced
back to England, but on the mother's side he is
descended from Jean Dupuis, who came, in 1685,
with other Huguenots, from La Rochelle to Boston.
Young Chamberlain was brought up in the country
district of Brewer.
During the last campaign of the war, General
Chamberlain, with two brigades, led the advance
of the infantry with Sheridan, and in the fight on
the Quaker Road he was twice wounded and his
horse was shot under him. For his "conspicuous
gallantry" in this action, he was promoted to the
brevet rank of Major-General. In the fight at
White Oak Road, March 31st, although seriously
disabled by wounds. General Chamberlain
distinguished himself by recovering a lost field ; while
in the battle of Five Forks, of April ist, his
promptitude and skillful handling of troops received again
official commendation. In the final action near
Appomattox Court House on the ninth of April,
Chamberlain was called by General Sheridan to
replace the leading division of cavalry, and the
first flag of truce from Longstreet came to
Chamberlain's headquarters. His Corps Commander
says in an official report: "In the final action.
General Chamberlain had the advance, and at the
time the announcement of the surrender was made
he was driving the enemy rapidly before him."
At the surrender of Lee's army. General
Chamberlain was designated to command the parade,
and it was characteristic of his refined nature that
he received the surrendering army with a salute of
honor. At the final grand review in Washington,
Chamberlain's division was placed at the head of
the column of the Army of the Potomac. The
General was mustered out of military service on
the sixteenth of January, 1866, having declined
the offer of a Colonelcy in the regular army.

"A riveting, unsparing, gritty, first-hand account of life in a great airborne unit that engaged in some of the toughest fighting in Afghanistan."—General David Petraeus, former Commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, former Commander of NATO/US Forces in Afghanistan and former Director of the CIA.
“DAMN THE VALLEY” was a phrase regularly uttered by the men that spent any amount of time in the Arghandab River Valley during the deployment of 2 Fury to Afghanistan in 2009–2010. The valley has claimed bodies from the troops of Alexander the Great, the British Empire, and more recently, the Russian Army. Operating in the valley was like nothing the men could have envisaged, they called it the “meat grinder.

Join Robert Child for the conclusion of our two-part narrative special, Gettysburg Voices from the Front. Today’s program is another in our series of story-telling specials. First person accounts are the living link we have to what occurred at Gettysburg. And although some of the accounts may be less than accurate due to the various authors seeing only their narrow view of the conflict and having limited information – they still bring to life the battle in a deeply personal way. You could call this an immersive type of history as we have woven the first hand accounts together so that they unfold in a linear way. A Union victory was far from a foregone conclusion at Gettysburg and these words from two centuries ago bring you closer to that history and those times. Now travel back with us to a divided America and the gravely uncertain days of July, 1863.

Join Robert Child for a narrative special. Weather and Warfare dramatically retraces the meteorological forces during battlefield engagements that doomed or saved civilizations. In 1588 more than half of the Spanish Armada, on its way around northern Britain, was destroyed by storms in retreat back to Spain. Napoleon's attack on Russia was stopped cold by winter weather, as was Hitler's siege of Leningrad. In WWI, it was all quiet on the western front during mud season. The miracle at Dunkirk took place under cover of heavy fog, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was launched under cover of Pacific storms and the D-day invasion of Normandy was launched based on the most critical weather forecast in history.

Point of the Spear Special Presentation. Part Two of The Christmas Crossing.
Late December 1776 – A ragged Continental army has now put an icy river between themselves and the pursing British army. The men in blue and buff uniforms have known nothing but defeat and had once again made a narrow escape while the Congress at Philadelphia reflecting no confidence in their troops prepare to evacuate to Baltimore. Washington’s besieged men reflect the state of a nation weary of war and a cause on the brink of extinction. They are an army in waiting - waiting for ammunition, blankets and reinforcements. But others, nearly half, are simply waiting for their enlistments to be up on January 1, 1777. Within days Washington would have no men with which to fight and the cause and the dream of independence would be over. This is the backdrop of one of the most daring surprise attacks in American history - Washington's crossing of the Delaware and the subsequent victory at Trenton. Told in an urgent narrative style, Washington's Crossing: America's First D-Day, reveals the cast of characters and many untold aspects of the Crossing that made the victory even that much more incredible.
This presentation is part of a much longer audiobook. America’s First D-day available at the links below.

Join Robert Child for a conversation with former Army Ranger Dr. Tony Brooks, author of Leave No Man Behind: The Untold Story of the Rangers’ Unrelenting Search for Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL Lone Survivor in Afghanistan. The book gives a first-hand account of the daring recovery of Turbine 33 and the subsequent search for the remaining compromised Navy SEAL recon team—one of whom was Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor. The Rangers were up against lack of intel, treacherous terrain, violent weather, and an enemy that was raised to fight.
