This week I am joined by WWF Conservation Biologist Shaleyla Kelez who works in northern Peru dedicating her time towards protecting sea turtles from fishermen bycatches.
Shaleyla is a Biologist, with a focus on Ecology, from the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, and has a PhD in Marine Biology and Conservation from Duke University (US) thanks to a fellowship in Ecology from the Fulbright Commission and the OAS.
She has spent 21 years conducting scientific research that can be applied to improve the management and conservation of habitats and marine species such as turtles and elasmobranchii.
She is currently an associate researcher in ecOceánica and a Specialist in the WWF Wildlife Program. Shaleyla has 17 scientific articles and book chapters and has participated in more than 25 scientific meetings in addition to helping organize international and regional symposia on sea turtles, as well as the 1st and 2nd Peruvian Symposium on Sharks, Rays and related species.
A few years ago she won the Carlos Ponce del Prado Award in the Conservation Artificer category.
Here we discuss Peru's extraordinary marine life, the tragic recent oil spill, ingenious conservation solutions and much more.
