The C-Level usually have different concepts, different frames of thinking in their minds and getting buy in is not just a matter of using the right words and to help them intellectually understand. When tech companies hire our marketing firm to help ’em get big clients, the conversation very quickly shifts to this: EMPLOYER BRANDING »» attracting and retaining talent.

The tech sector is probably one of the fiercest places in the war for talent.

The truth is that attracting and keeping (the two are interrelated!) talent can sometimes do more for your bottom line and strategic position, than acquiring new customers on new channels.

For many service companies, the bottleneck to more revenue isn’t a lack of leads or sales opportunities. They could easily sell more projects if they had the right butts in empty seats. It’s a crazy reality!

Marketing is being flipped on its head, and most players don’t even realize it. All they see is the constant change, but few realize the driving forces, let alone the direction we’re heading.

This is actually good news, as you will see.

Over the past two decades, part of the reason we’ve come to love digital marketing is our ability to target, measure, test and scale. Ads, campaigns, remarketing, everything.

Have you heard the news of the B2B company that went bankrupt because it created awesome content and distributed its valuable insights and methods?

You know, the Saas that had a great marketing team that came up with new concepts, created unique positioning, published all the thinking and intelligence behind their product, evangelized it successfully… only to have it all snatched by competitors and go out of business?

Of course, you haven’t. Because it never happened and never will! Period.

In the red-hot and amazingly cool community of RevGenius, a lively conversation popped up the other day. The question was: who has a “templatized messaging framework”.

Truth be told, we don’t believe in templatized strategies, but obviously, we do have our tools which we’re constantly refining. Because strategy and messaging are complex things, we couldn’t just drop a link to our Google Spreadsheet in the thread, because that can do more harm than good…

So, we ended up going through the framework which Klear uses to build positioning, ICP-refinement, messaging and GTM strategies for clients. And that’s how this episode was born.

Hope you find it useful!

Are you looking to hire a marketing star but don’t have a clear idea of what qualities you should be seeking?

Let me tell you what most leaders look at B2B tech companies who are making their first marketing hires: – past performance – creativity.

These are also two of the most misinterpreted and misused concepts especially when it comes to hiring.

There are no generic answers to these questions because… well, you know: “it depends”.

Transitioning and building out an ABM machine is hugely impacted by the degree of marketing that’s already happening in your organization. In other words, many things depend on how mature your marketing operations are.

We wanted to make this distinction very clear to help you advance in building out ABM in your company. Helping us are the best of the best ninjas when it comes to no-nonsense, low-tech and high-impact account-based marketing: the Fullfunnel.io guys: Andrei Zinkevich and Vlad Blagojevic.

Loads of product companies experiment with LinkedIn Ads, only to find that it drains budgets. Then they call the verdict: “it’s expensive”. Here is a shocker for you: in business, there is no such thing as “cheap” or “expensive”. Something either makes a return (little or a lot), or no return. Or, you can’t tell whether it makes a return on investment.

Here is a challenge: instead of going for really exciting marketing projects or careers, try something different for a change: market a product that is really dull. Like, a commodity. Like, nuts and bolts.

Now, THAT is a huge marketing challenge.

Great marketing is about creating a story around the product or company that is authentic and true, and inviting people to step into that story. Great marketing engages and educates people; it helps them transform their lives, their work, and perhaps themselves.

Recently we have had a lot of talks about content creation with multiple clients. Specifically we talked about video content.

Now the reason we chatted so much about it is twofold:

Firstly the most trivial aspect of spending a large chunk of our content related chats about videos, is that today you can not be a prosperous company without a media element. Not being able to share your point of view in an easily digestible, fun way means you will have a hard time in the race of “thought leadership”. To borrow a line from the Category Pirates: “The creator or company that sets the agenda in the space creates the space and dominates the space.”

Secondly -which unsurprisingly heavily relates to my first point- because we practice what we preach, and we place a great emphasis on creating video content with each of our clients. However there’s an aspect to content creation that although is prevalent with almost any content, pops its head up way more frequently with videos: the unnecessary aim for perfection.

How to create a fundamental piece of your B2B marketing strategy.

We totally. 100% believe what’s written in the subtitle: a brand narrative should be a fundamental piece of your messaging strategy and this episode will outline how to create one for your B2B business. A brand narrative impacts at least three areas beyond marketing:

  1. customer success
  2. sales
  3. vision/mission

So, this episode of the Electric B2B Show emerged out of this conversation on Linkedin, but it’s actually rooted in a previous discussion we had with a client.

The harsh reality is, most B2B agencies are not rowing in the same direction, as you – their client.

That’s because most agencies’ revenue model makes it necessary for them to sell more and more work and projects to you, and deliver them in a standardized way. This goal will sometimes align with your revenue operations’ or marketing’s actual needs, but the more mature your marketing grows, the less adequate it will be.

Some tech service companies and consultancies grow to $3M+ in revenue and 100+ people with very little marketing. There are some opportunities that can “make things work” initially without having a marketing engine. However, when these combine with adequate branding, demand generation and a go to market strategy, they amplify results.

This episode will help you to use emotion wisely in sales and marketing of IT services and tech products. Even if you think your service or product is dull. Ask any great sales person the turning moments in memorable sales conversations.

They will almost always talk about the prospect experiencing strong emotion: a realization, bonding, connecting with a story. Key turning points, aha moments always happen when emotion is spurred, injected into the conversation.

The goal of thought leadership simply put is: make your company look smart, so as to build authority. While true, it’s the wrong perspective.

We’re fans of framing goals and strategy from the viewpoint of the customer. Our advice: flip this around and approach “thought leadership” from the buyer’s perspective. More specifically, on the value they get. Make the goal: provide help, advice, value, entertainment, encouragement, positivity, connection.

Here is what they DO care deeply about... Fundamentally, all your prospects care about is what you can do for them. Not the way you look, sound or even how “professional” your company is. This shift in perspective will liberate your marketing and outbound activities.

Yet, the fear of not looking “professional” enough and the assumption that you have to get it perfect is what keeps sales and marketing from doing things that are very effective. For example: video, be it video on social or video-prospecting on Linkedin.
