Lord Chaitanya appeared 500 years ago in present India, and just like Jesus came to spread love for God. Today we discuss his life and teachings; an example of how we can all achieve spiritual perfection and happiness.
You’ll hear us discuss the difficulties we face in the modern times of wide spread materialism and irreligion. For these times, Chaitanya made it clear that chanting God’s names, known as mantras in the yoga tradition, is the highest worship.
We humbly ask all of our listeners to understand that the teachings of Chaitanya are applicable beyond any particular belief system. As we point out, religion simply means doing the will of the Supreme Lord.
Because ultimately, it is the desire of Lord Chaitanya, and ourselves, that you come closer to the heart of Jesus. By knowing, loving, and serving God.
With this episode, we conclude our 16-part series on ‘The Heart of Jesus’. We hope you have learnt something of value, and ask you to please write us with any questions or requests for further discussion/explanation.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.” - Matthew 5:10-12
Today we delve into the stark contrast between the darkness and light in the world. We share the extraordinary accounts of Jesus’ apostles, who held on to their faith despite the most horrendous persecutions. And you’ll hear us differentiate between their genuine faith and its polar opposite of fanaticism.
On that note, we didn’t make this episode to delve into the cruelty of how they were treated. Rather, we wanted to show how these apostles are the most wonderful examples of the power of faith, and the power of love. Examples that show how light always conquers darkness.

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” - Matthew 7:15
Today we delve into the essence of spiritual teachings, namely the importance of finding a true spiritual teacher. And how you practically can tell the real ones from the false ones.
We stress the significance of assessing the genuineness of spiritual teachers based on their actions and teachings. We discuss the role of a spiritual master as a connection to the Supreme Person, and underscore the necessity of surrendering to a living spiritual teacher in the pursuit of spiritual growth.
The bottom line is; if we don’t even try to find a spiritual teacher, we will be like a rudderless boat in the ocean of life. However, if we are not careful in this endeavour, we will not make it to a safe harbour.

Reincarnation (and thus, karma) was taught by Jesus as well as the early fathers of Christianity. When that concept was removed, several strange concepts were put into place - that are still being taught. For example, the eternal damnation that follows if you don’t take the one and only chance you have in this lifetime, the creation of the soul at the time of conception, and the idea that our suffering is not really due to our past actions - but due to the original sin committed by Adam and Eve.
In this episode of Breaking Trail, we discuss the concepts of karma and reincarnation and their relationship with Christian teachings. We explore the idea that actions influence future outcomes, supporting this with Paul’s words from Galatians 6:7-9, "A man reaps what he sows," which serves as a cornerstone for understanding spiritual laws of cause and effect.
We examine the historical decision by Justinian in 550 AD to remove reincarnation from Christian doctrine, a decision that introduced major theological shifts and inconsistencies. Life is really a continuous journey of spiritual evolution, which aligns with teachings from both the Vedas and early Christian texts.

We discuss the importance of redirecting ones materialistic passions towards spiritual pursuits, and touch upon the Vedic concept of intelligence for attaining a true perspective. Balakhilya also shares biblical narratives comparing Mary Magdalene and Chintamani. We discuss themes of mercy and redemption with references like Jesus' response to an accused adulteress, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”. At the end, you’ll hear us respond to a listener’s question about chanting silently in the mind.
This episode not only explores spiritual dimensions but also humanizes the path of spiritual growth, showing that enlightenment and help can emerge from the most unexpected sources.

What is real prayer, and what has that got to do with meditation? In fact, Jesus was meditating constantly; immersed in service to the Supreme Lord.
Today, we explore the concept of uncovering one’s love for the Supreme Lord and the process of cultivating it through meditation. We discuss the purpose of the religious processes; namely to enhance individuals' devotion to God, beyond sectarian differences. We also read from and expand upon Jesus’ famous ‘Lord's Prayer’:
‘Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’ (Matthew 6)

We see two extremes in today’s world. On one hand we see states ruled by some religious sect which are often characterised by violence, fanaticism, and intolerance.
On the other we have highly secular states that outwardly seem more peaceful, but where the erosion of the spiritual foundation means there is no longer any moral standard for the people to follow.
In today’s talk you’ll hear how America was originally founded trying to go beyond these two extremes. Its founders were Christians who had broken off from the Church of England, wanting to establish a state based on spiritual principles but without fanaticism.
Unfortunately, just recently, a new Speaker of the House was elected who believes that the Bible is the only way and the only truth. Not only has this nothing to do with real religion, but this fanatic spirit is the root cause of the societal divide and hatred we see today.

Being a submissive servant of the Absolute Whole is really where the topmost happiness is at. And Jesus was a perfect example of that:
"During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the One who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission"(Hebrews 5:7)
Today we reflect on the profound significance of recognizing our true spiritual nature and serving a higher power. We clarify the misconceptions surrounding being a servant and the true essence of serving God in loving devotion. And that is all encapsulated in the life and teachings of Lord Jesus Christos.

So what is God really like?
The Song of Solomon, for example, gives us a detailed description of His eyes, limbs, hair, and mouth. He is described as “altogether lovely”, and our “beloved and friend”.
And if we accept His true, loving nature, we open ourselves up to a most wonderful connection and relationship.

Today we highlight the impact of disconnecting from spirituality and how it leads to loneliness and darkness. We need to focus on spiritual values and the teachings of Jesus; this will create genuine togetherness during Christmas.

Being thankful is absolutely essential to be happy and experience spiritual growth. As it says in the Bible,
“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
Psalms 107:8-9
So why is thankfulness so powerful? And if I’m not very thankful, how do I move towards that?
Today we discuss all about thankfulness. We reflect on the historical origins of Thanksgiving. We touch on the decline in societal appreciation for spiritual values and the exploitation of Native Americans. And you’ll learn about the interconnectedness of determination and thankfulness.

When we surpass the illusions regarding our identity, we can experience that we are actually wonderful sparks of the Supreme Soul. We are spiritual, eternal beings, but we are also subordinate servants.
So what is the covering that makes us unable to reallize this deeply comforting truth in our lives? Is it possible that this covering is why we came to this material world in the first place?
Today we dive into the concept of false ego, illusion and misguidance, and we discuss how Jesus taught us to become free of all these coverings. We shed light on how Jesus emphasized the importance of loving God first before loving others, and how this love can be the guiding force in our lives.

“But we know that if the earthly tent, which is our house, is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Indeed, in this house, we groan, longing to be in our heavenly house.” 2 Corinthians 5:1
Today we explore the distinction between the material and spiritual worlds. We delve into the concept of false ego and the eternal nature of the spiritual self, contrasting it with the temporary nature of material existence.
Drawing from spiritual texts such as the Bhagavad-gita and the Holy Bible, we discuss the cyclical nature of the material creation process and the eternal, unchanging nature of the spiritual world.
You’ll hear us discuss scientific theories such as the Big Bang and emphasice the importance of accepting spiritual truth. We highlight the concept of the spiritual world as our true home and discuss the idea of serving as a right hand man to God; just like Jesus showed, we are subordinate in relation to the Supreme.

The essence of spiritual life is understanding that I am not made of flesh and blood. I am not my body; I am the spirit soul inside. The Bible makes this very clear in verses such as “though our outer body is decaying, yet our inner body is being renewed day by day” and “flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God”.
Unfortunately, many times these verses are not fully appreciated and understood. Today we look closer at these verses in the light of the yoga wisdom. We explore our very essence and the purpose of it all; far beyond the physical body. We discuss the impact of materialism, the mistaken belief that "I am my body," and its consequences in society.
You’ll also hear us address the conflicts arising from sectarian viewpoints (us versus them) and emphasize the true nature of religion as harmonizing and based on love. We touch upon our need for spiritual food and the perishable nature of the material body in contrast to our eternal spiritual essence.

Maybe you see yourself as a Christian, but struggle to find satisfying answers to your doubts? Or maybe you’re curious on understanding the concept of God and religion through a non-sectarian perspective?
In our new podcast series “The Heart of Jesus”, we help those whose hearts are ready to get a deeper understanding of Jesus’ life and teachings. As Jesus himself put it, “I have much more to say to you, but right now it would be more than you could understand.” (John 16-12)
Through study of both the Bible and Yoga texts, we debunk the many misunderstandings about who Jesus was and why he came. We explain Biblical texts from the yoga perspective and discuss questions such as “Who am I?”, “Why am I here?”, and “What is a real Christian?”
As you’ll hear, the core message of Jesus was love for the Supreme and love for others; the same message that all great spiritual teachers have been teaching since time immemorial. Welcome to come closer to the heart of Jesus.
Today we explore the essence of Christianity and what it truly means to be a Christian. Going to church every Sunday does not really make us religious, and being religious is not a denominational label or a cause for division.
We are all children of the same Father, and acting upon that fact is rather what makes a person religious. As you’ll hear us discuss, Jesus didn't try to convert anyone but just spoke the truth to anyone who would listen.
Following in his footsteps, we explore the reality that we are spiritual beings having a human experience and discuss the true understanding of religion as knowing, loving, and serving God.

He is probably the most known person in the world. We hear a lot about his death, but know little about his life and what he actually taught. Some say he was a Christian, others that he was a yogi. Some claim he was God, others that he was a lover of God. And some even see his life as mere fairy tales.
Who was Jesus? And what was the heart of his teachings?
We explore the many misconceptions surrounding Jesus’ life and teachings and reflect upon the commercialization of Christmas and the overshadowing of its spiritual significance. You’ll get an insight into Jesus's humble beginnings, his inclinations toward spiritual matters from a young age, and the importance of glorifying the Supreme Father - not Jesus by himself. We discuss Jesus' focus on the kingdom of God and how he challenged people’s attachment to material wealth.
Jesus’ message was love, humility, and service to God–values that we all need more of in our lives. Regardless of our age, nationality, or religion.

How do I know what to really do with my life? And how can I discern between material and spiritual desires when I try to follow my heart?
Tune in for a heartfelt and personal podcast, where Balakhilya tells the story of his finding deeper purpose and direction in life. Imagine choosing between coca cola and freshly pressed sugarcane juice; just like our tastes differ, so do our spiritual paths. Some prefer to relate to the ocean of light or the impersonal path, while others embrace the personal form of the Supreme Lord.
While at first the paths run parallel to each other—recognizing our true identity beyond the physical body and caring for the welfare of all—as we progress, a crucial decision awaits. Will we accept the existence of a Supreme Person or immerse ourselves in the ocean of light?
Guided by the most authoritative yoga texts, namely the Bhavagad-gita, we look at which of these two spiritual paths lead to the highest perfection. We shed light on the rise of impersonalism as a social trend, with common catchphrases such as “We are all one” that often overshadows a deeper understanding of spirituality.

You’ve come to realise that you want to live a more spiritually oriented life. Now what?
This episode is centred around a question a friend of Ruben had for him, namely what the next step is if one wants to develop spiritually. What practices are important, and if I’d like to make some form of plan; how should it look?
Answering the question, we discuss the danger of relying on our senses to come to understand the Absolute Truth. We need to rely on authentic knowledge and perfect teachers rather than relying on our imperfect senses, the societal norms or what our friends and family tell us. Having plans and goals and plans is all good, but we need to ultimately tune in to the plan that the Supreme Person has for us.
Balakhilya also shares personal examples and gives very practical tips for daily spiritual practices such as hearing and chanting mantras as well as remembering that the self is not the body; which are the first three and most important processes of Bhakti Yoga.

500 years ago in India lived a spiritual personality of extraordinary character and devotion, called Haridas Thakur. Due to their unfortunate team-spirit, both the Muslims and Hindus rejected him as he failed to abide to any particular process or religion. Joined by their envy of Haridas, they planned to send a prostitute to his home and defame him by catching him in the act of engaging in sexual activity with her.
Needless to say, their plan completely backfired. In the end, Haridas Thakur became even more glorified, while the prostitute became a great spiritual teacher whose advice was sought by people from all over the country.
This is a story of how to deal with unwanted desires and lust, how faith turns the most dangerous threat into an amazing opportunity, and how we can be of real service to others when we have a strong spiritual foundation. This is the story of Haridas Thakur and the prostitute who became a saint.

We learned from the previous episodes how we are actually an eternal spark of life, a spirit soul. Now what? Do we just kind of float around and exist, that’s it?
No - we have an eternal function, an activity in which we align with our true selves and find true happiness. And that is to serve others, and serve the Supreme.
Like Bob Dylan sang back in 85:
“You may be a preacher with your spiritual prideYou may be a city councilman taking bribes on the sideYou may be workin’ in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hairYou may be somebody’s mistress, may be somebody’s heir
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeedYou’re gonna have to serve somebodyWell, it may be the devil or it may be the LordBut you’re gonna have to serve somebody”
So who do you choose to serve?

We learned last week that we are not our bodies; neither our gross physical body or our subtle mental body. This time we dive deeper into the truth that we don’t stop existing at the time of death.
You, me, and everyone else - indeed everything around you that shows the symptoms of a life particle being present (including animals & trees) - are the life of the body. And live never ceases to be.
“Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings, nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.”Bhagavad-gita 2.12
This is the second part of a 3-part series on “Who Am I?”, where we dive deep down into our actual essence.

“Perfection starts with the perfect understanding that I’m not the body. That’s a perfect truth, a perfect realization.”
If you don’t know who you are, how could it ever be possible to know where to go and what to do with your life?
Without knowing you you are, you cannot solve any of the problems you’ll face in life; not feeling complete satisfied, struggling with the temporary material body, feeling like you don’t fit in, and so on.
This is the first part of a 3-part series on “Who Am I?”, where we dive deep down into our actual essence.

Losing a loved one is one of the hardest things we go through in life. A few months ago we recorded episode #29 with Madhavendra Puri dasi as our guest, where she spoke about living with the terminal disease of ALS and facing death without fear.
This time we’re joined by a family who suddenly lost a wife, mother and grandmother, as Madhavendra very recently passed away. We feel very fortunate and humbled to be let into the inner world and feelings of a family that all live a yoga meditation lifestyle.
How is the ancient wisdom of yoga a source of shelter and great comfort for them? And why, despite this being a challenging time, can they simultaneously feel great joy and love?

There is really no hope—for the material body. Nor for the material utopia we sometimes dream about. But there is real hope for you, the spirit soul.
What is that hope? Coming to know about and gradually realize your true nature as eternally joyful, vibrant, and youthful. And we can move forward in that direction—if we choose to do so.

“The wind picked up more and more. And snow is one thing, because it doesn't hurt your face, but this was ice-water-snow. So it hurt your face that much you had to cover it all, and when that ice slush hits your glasses that gets totally covered as well.
But just that feeling of having the GPS-watch… I had the direction of the cabin, but for three hours all you could see was two meters in front of you at best, and we had to put our ski poles in front of us to feel what was up and down.
And all along you have this big, steep canyon to the right, with an obvious avalanche risk; so you don't want to fall into it. Always you always know it's there, somewhere to your right.
You’re forced by nature to become so small, so powerless. So you’ve got to have some faith in some authority greater than you, an inner compass that is not affected by the storm. In my case, the GPS. It’s tough, it’s hard, but at the same time it’s not; because you’ve been given guidance - if you just dare to follow it.”

We are all hungry for real love, but nothing but the real thing will ever satisfy that hunger. In that way, lust is not bad, it’s just a manifestation of an inner spiritual hunger, a desire that comes out in a perverted or distorted way.
The good news is that all we need to do is to come out of the influence of the current of lust, and place ourselves under the influence of spiritual love. But that requires a decision from us to listen to and repeat the Absolute Truth - and thus remember who we really are. That is; an eternal spirit soul, starving for the nourishment of spiritual love.
This is part 2 of ‘Lust vs Real Love’; if you haven’t already, we recommend you to first listen to episode #44 to fully understand the difference between lust and love.

Real love has become so rare that we barely even know what it means any more. What we think is love is often just lust in disguise; that is, based on mutual exploitation and sense enjoyment.
Consequently, instead of living the life we are meant to live—a life of inner satisfaction, contentment and harmony—we suffer from jealousy, anger, bitterness and anxiety in our relationships toward others. Regardless if it’s our partner, family, friends or colleagues.
“Therefore, lust and are quite different. Lust is like dense darkness, but love is like the bright sun.” Chaitanya-Charitamrita Adi-lila 4.178
So what is the key to opening our hearts and allowing the light of real love to enter? How can I know the difference between lust and real love? And how can I make my relationships truly nourishing and fulfilling?

If we want to feel good and be happy, what we eat is one of the most important factors to consider. We all know that some foods are healthier than others, but fewer know that different foods will impact our mental condition in a specific direction.
Depending on what food we eat, we come under the influence of one of the 3 modes of material nature (psychological forces); goodness, passion, or ignorance. As a consequence of this choice, we may experience agitation, anxiety, depression, stress—or peace of mind and heart.
“Foods in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one's existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such nourishing foods are sweet, juicy, fattening and palatable. Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, pungent, dry and hot, are liked by people in the modes of passion. Such foods cause pain, distress, and disease. Food which is tasteless, stale, putrid, decomposed and unclean, is food liked by people in the mode of ignorance.” Bhagavad-gita 17.8-10

All genuine spiritual processes are based on discipline. And even if you strive for material success, you will still need to apply the spiritual principles of hard work, respect, discipline, and a higher goal.
This episode was inspired by Emma Raducanu, the 18-year old tennis star who won the US Open in September 2021, who explained that her success was due to her hard training and discipline at home, inspired by a grandmother who had such a determination that nothing could bring her down. You’ll hear us talk a lot about the role of parents, and how the training should begin in the home.
The fact is, we’ve become so afraid of hurting or offending our kids that we shy away from saying ‘no’ to and disciplining them. Which in the end will hurt them far more. We bring up the example of the so-called leaders of today’s society, who are simply grown up kids fighting with each other for lordship over the sandbox.
Similarly, in spiritual life, following any desire we might have or just “doing what we feel like”—without any authority, discipline or actual guidance on where happiness is to be found—will at best only take us in circles.

We always promote people to engage in a spiritual lifestyle, but what does ‘spiritual’ really mean then? Is it (or does it have to be) cosmic, filled with experiences of higher vibrations, or based on some drug-induced alternate states of consciousness?
Spiritual life really means a gradual evolution of soul toward the Absolute Truth, culminating in the topmost satisfaction of a loving relationship between the Supreme Soul and us, the spirit soul. In other words, spiritual life means experiencing a change of heart. And nothing else will truly satisfy us.

There are a lot of misunderstanding about what spiritual life really is. Including the idea that if you don’t care about personal hygiene or your appearance, if you are very poor, or refuse to make any plans for the future but choose to float around in a careless bubble of “be here now”—you’re somehow a spiritual person.
If we really to want to taste the happiness of genuine spiritual life, we need to learn how to live a life of full responsibility. There is no need to renounce the world. You can be a busy mother taking care of a demanding child 24 hour a day, but if you see that child as a spirit soul, a spark of the Supreme Soul, then you will be able to spend all those 24 hours actively working to fulfill your spiritual duty, spiritual responsibility. Thus helping your child toward true spiritual wellbeing becomes your spiritual life.
In this talk we take a closer look at what ‘responsibility’ actually means, and why it’s so essential for us in order to live a meaningful life.

Due to so many religious fanatics (though fanaticism really has nothing to do with real religion), we tend to think that having faith is a dangerous thing. Actually, without faith, one can never make any real progress. But such faith does not come from joining a certain team and blindly aligning with whatever so-called truths are put forward.
So what is the process by which faith is developed? Easily summarized:
Let’s take a closer look at blind following, the root cause of fanaticism, and the real meaning of faith.

Society is definitely making huge progress—going nowhere really fast. Material sense gratification has replaced spiritual growth, and is now the standard of civilization. We always try to get ahead of everyone else; whether it’s within sports, career, or family life.
We all need to take a step back and ask ourselves; “Is the world as a whole, the people on planet Earth, are we as individuals more happy?” When we do, we see that our striving for so-called progress takes us further away from the ultimate goal of happiness. The house of cards is falling down. And the further we move away from a spiritual foundation of life, the more we lose our spiritual values, morals, our spiritual compass.
In our life, we have to know clearly what the goal should be, how to reach our desired destination, and what hindrances and stumbling blocks are in the way. We need to know, “How do I know if I am actually moving forward in my life?”
In episode #37, we’ll take a closer look at the difference between real and apparent progress to be able to know whether or not we are actually moving forward. “The question is, ‘Which society is advancing?’ Advancement does not mean creating material ‘necessities’ unnecessarily and thus wasting human energy in aggravation over so-called material comforts. Real advancement is advancement towards spiritual realization.” Srimad Bhagavatam 3.21.52-54 Purport

Did you ever try to learn tennis simply by reading a book? Or tried figure out physics simply through your own speculations?
The need for a teacher is obvious in any field, and spiritual life is no different. In fact, it’s an absolute necessity; “The Vedic wisdom therefore advises that in order to solve the perplexities of life and to understand the science of the solution, one must approach a spiritual master who is in the disciplic succession.”
But to many of us, the word ‘Guru’ or ‘Spiritual master’ may be associated with exploitation, mystic tricks, and dominating over others. For good reason, because there are so many cheaters that misuse the position of being a teacher.
So how can we make sure we are not in the position of being the ones that are being cheated?
In today’s episode we take a closer look at how we can actually know who is a true guru, a bona-fide spiritual master. And the signs & symptoms of a person you should stay far away from.

In a society characterized by conflict and “hair-splitting sophistry”, we might be attracted to solve the discords by concluding, “Whatever, all roads lead to the same place!” But giving in to wishy-washy philosophy in order to avoid conflict is not being truthful. And it won’t do anyone any good. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free”. And the opposite is equally true; without truth, we are imprisoned.
So how can we understand the idea of absolute truth? Is everything just relative to our perspective, or are there some universal axioms that the world runs by? And perhaps more importantly, the question of epistemology; if there is a truth, how can I come to know it?
Whether you are looking for real relief from a stressful everyday life or you are looking for the deeper meaning to life, this episode will inspire you to move forward. And inward.

Chandra is an exceptionally talented, well-spoken freelance type of guy; yet incredibly humble and reflective. The words we used the most in this episode was Fun, followed by Skiing - Chanting - Feel - Nice - Friends - Smoothies - Biking. Tells you something about the guy.
Only 23 years old, he has already been invited to go to the Olympic Games as part of the Canadian Taekwondo team (an invitation he declined, thinking “there are so many other things you can do”), had a brief career as a model/actor, built a 630m2 retreat center together with his father, and traveled all over the world. In winter it’s all about skiing, in summer all about BMX and mountain biking.
Chandra’s parents are old-time friends of Balakhilya’s, and Chandra grew up with the Bhakti-yoga lifestyle. He is all about having fun, but thanks to his upbringing always understood that the pleasures of this world are fleeting and always mixed with some degree of pain. One second you ski in the most amazing powder, the next you are in total anguish due to a dislocated shoulder;
“My parents have always been able to give me an answer, or a solution, with this process, and always shown me that there's a way to be happy while you're in this material world. The process shows it, and you can feel it in your heart. When you apply it, it speaks for itself. You feel it.”

We all tend to find faults in others, instead of seeing (and working with) our own shortcomings. And the basic problem is us expecting perfection in the material world. We think that if other people and all material situations are as ideal as we want them to be, then we will be happy. Which couldn’t be further from the truth.
In this talk, Balakhilya and Ruben discuss how by following a spiritual path (and shifting our association) we gradually develop an aversion to faultfinding. Instead of looking at the faults of others we become aware of our own imperfections.
As you’ll hear, faultfinding goes completely against our spiritual wellbeing, since it feeds the false ego and false prestige. Passing judgement on others, we are really only passing judgement on ourselves.
We also look deeper at the topic of introspection; how being honest with ourselves is crucial in the process of spiritual development. Seeing our faults and admitting them, we’re able to pray for help to overcome our faults. And through meditation cleanse our hearts from the thorn of this faultfinding tendency.

We all try to find a stable, comfortable situation in this world, and make that our ‘bubble’. The problem is, this world is ever-changing. And so as my bubbles burst, as they inevitably do, we may feel like the rug is pulled out from under our feet; whether it be a relationship that ends, a loved one that dies, that we lose our job, or we face instability and conflict in our society.
In this talk Balakhilya reflects on how the bubble of his seemingly stable situation in Kazakhstan suddenly burst and the reality of this world came forward; being a place of conflict, chaos and confusion. If you tune in, you might find that some of your illusions about the world shatter, and are replaced with a profound and stable understanding who you actually are, what your place in this world is, and where to find the bullet-proof, never-bursting bubble.

9 years ago, she was diagnosed with the terminal disease of ALS. But that hasn’t stopped her from leading a meditation center in Toronto, Canada, and inspiring countless of people with her positive outlook and focus on the internal world. As she says herself, “the disease is an opportunity to turn within”.
In today's talk you get to meet and learn from Madhavendra Puri dasi, an old-time friend of Balakhilya. You’ll hear us discuss how real life is the interior world of spiritual life; when our external life starts collapsing we need to have an internal world to take refuge in—we need to know that we are not the body which is falling apart. But for that to happen, we need to come to a point of having a change in heart.
You’ll hear stories from both Madhavendra’s and Balakhilya’s travels around the world, sharing the knowledge they’ve received with others. We speak about how actually spiritual life starts when we come to the platform of realizing our vulnerability and inability to face the difficult situations of the world on our own.
Through their different stories, Ruben, Madhavendra, and Balakhilya all came to the same conclusion—there’s something beyond all of this. The nature of the world is to change, and they all found a place to find comfort.

What if you knew you had a friend somewhere in this world who had a sanctuary, his very own place, a piece of land that he himself owned, and where none of the world's turbulence and conflict could reach?
Where the people who lived there were just nice to each other, listened and respected each other. Where peace, tranquility and happiness prevailed. A place you knew you could go to if things got too crazy, a place you were welcome to, safe. Free. In this place, you did not have to worry anymore, did not have to plan, brace yourself or protect yourself from everything possible; personal attacks, physical attacks, natural disasters, or attacks by corrupt leaders.
What if you learned that these burdens of yours did not have to be on your shoulders anymore, day in and day out? That they’re not yours to solve. That the world around you is happening anyway, and that you cannot do anything about it anyway. That true shelter exists. It is not an illusion. It exists.
But the truth is that “There is no place on earth like home”. Home is not to be found ‘on earth’.
This talk sprang from Ruben’s intense feeling of longing for home when he especially sees snowy mountain peaks in the horizon, feeling that “The mountains are calling, I must go”. What is this calling, where does it come from, and does such a place exist where there is no worry, fear, or anxiety? Where is home?
In our first episode of 2022, we invite you to join the greatest and most important journey of all, the journey of finding home.

So how to truly find a shelter in the storm? How can I live fearlessly, deal with the grief of losing someone, or find myself in the middle of all of this? In today’s talk we discuss how to adapt to a changing world;
“What is unnatural is not the suffering, but the spirit soul’s being here in the material world. What is unnatural is not that the soul is unhappy here. But the fact that the soul is here”

Polar night has just started at Ruben’s house in Tromsø, Norway—the sun is gone and will be back by the end of January again. This, together with the outdoor temperatures of -18°C, inspired us to cosy up about the fireplace and speak about how to be able to maintain an inner warmth through cold and dark times, the importance of being adaptable in this world and how we tend to project happiness on things that really have no pleasure in them.
This all leads up to an inspiring story and discussion around how Balakhilya met his spiritual guide on a remote island in Hawaii, living in an old sugar cane camp house in the jungle with no running water or electricity (but with vegetables trees all around for his sustenance). And like he says, he realized that “… as far as the philosophy, and the direction in life, and understanding what is true and what is not—when I met these teachings, I just knew; ‘This is perfect. This has got all the answers, this includes everything I need to know. I don't have to look for anything else. I don't have to change.’”
You’ll hear us talk about how finding a spiritual guide is all about accepting that the Supreme Soul will arrange for to come into contact with such a person, at the proper time for us. We have to be able to trust in the higher plan, but also dare to actually trust in another person—which may be hard, since it seems like at soon as we start trusting somebody, we get burnt.
We end by speaking about how spiritual life is the real adventure; an exhilarating, ever-fresh, increasingly satisfying journey toward actual life.

It is a fact that we humans have wrecked havoc on the planet. Not only are we causing irreversible changes to ecosystems all over the world, but also created societies plagued by greed, anger, and division. These are all results of our misusing the opportunity we have in the human form of life.
In today’s talk we speak about how humans have power above all other creatures, and it can be used for either good or bad. What separates humans from animals is our capacity for spiritual realization—escaping the entanglement of material existence, and working for the wellbeing of all sentient beings on this planet. The fact is, we are eternal spirit souls in temporary material bodies. But when we identify with the material body, this immediately produces conflict—We struggle with material nature because we don't want to die.
Tune in and hear how and why scriptures advise us not to waste the human form of life. Actually, this life form is very rare; in each and every plant and animal there is a person, a living entity. The souls transmigrate from one body to another, from lower to higher forms of life, with the accompanying consciousness that goes with that form. The human form of life is the facility through which we can escape this wheel of birth and death.
You’ll hear some perhaps difficult truths in today’s talk; including how if we don't use the human form of life for spiritual realization, we go back to the lower forms of life. And it can take millions of births to get a human body again. But if we try to use this life for developing God consciousness, then even if we don't have a complete success we still get another human body in the next life to continue our development.
According to the Vedas, just because one has a human body it doesn't mean that one is a human; the definition of a human is when one uses the human form of life to enquire about the Absolute Truth. If all one is doing with his human body consists of animal activities (eating, sleeping, mating and defending), one hasn't done anything human yet. Balakhilya also mentions how the teachings of all great acharyas is to follow the path of spiritual realization, not to look for material development; because God provides all material resources that humans need.
Actually, spiritual fulfillment and satisfaction is the true happiness. There is no substitute for the real purpose of human life—the greatest welfare activity is to teach this truth to others.

‘Mindfulness’ has become a buzzword that is used both in business world (often as a means to achieve material success) as well among spiritual seekers (often as a means to quiet the mind). But the fact is, most mindfulness techniques are not spiritual at all; just being mindful of the present does not satisfy the soul. And whether mindfulness is spiritually beneficial or not depends upon what one is mindful of.
So what is the real importance and function of mindfulness, and how can it help us in our quest for self-discovery? Why should I practice mindfulness?
In today’s talk we take a closer look at the (perhaps) inconvenient truth about mindfulness. We speak about how this podcast presents truths that most people are not speaking about, because they are somehow inconvenient. But if you really want to know the truth, then this podcast is for you. We also discuss how there are many spiritual teachers who have a good intention, but also have a limited knowledge about the goal of life. Therefore, they can only lead people to a certain level - and not to the ultimate destination.
Mindfulness means to focus the mind on a particular subject matter. Many times it is used for the end goal of some kind of material material, or just to quiet the thoughts. But if you tune in, you’ll hear Balakhilya explain how the goal is to be mindful of, or focused on, the Absolute Truth - that we are spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul. And being mindful of our relationship to the Supreme Cause allows us to awaken the spiritual love inherent in all of us.

Repetition of a certain behaviour creates habits, and many of those truly control our lives. We may have some good habits, bad ones, or even some really ugly ones. We all know that it is very easy to get into bad habits - you do not need to make an effort to do it. But while bad habits start with some sweet taste to them, they always turn out very bitter.
In this episode we take a closer look at how we with knowledge and determination can make good choices and get good results for our lives. The tendency to cheat is built in in the human form of life; that is why we have guidelines to prevent us starting on a path that leads to mistakes & misery. Knowledge allows us to make a conscious decision on where we want to go.
In this context, we touch upon the difference between animals and humans; namely that being in a human form of life, we are not just controlled by instinct but have the facility to choose between good or bad decisions. Choices based on knowledge and determination lead to good results, while choices made in ignorance produce bad results.
You’ll also hear how the Bhakti Yoga process gives us many opportunities to develop good habits; habits that function as an investment for our future wellbeing (for example, listening to this podcast!). And how we can be free from expecting other peoples' praise about our achievements through uncovering our true spiritual nature and intrinsic value. In the end the question really boils down to: where do I want to end up, in a good or bad situation?

“For one who is born, death is certain” - Bhagavad-gita 2.27
A few months ago, a friend of ours started having a minor headache. The day afterwards, it got a lot worse with vomiting and extreme pain. She went into a coma. The doctors diagnosed her with brain cancer. The day after, they operated and found out that the brain was already dead. From perfectly healthy to leaving her body - it was all over in 4 days.
Death is probably one of the most painful and scary experiences in life. We are usually trying to run away from this uncomfortable subject, so much so that we don’t want to talk or even think about it. We are not only afraid of our own death, but more so - we do not want to lose the ones we love. We know that this will break our heart and bring painful separation. But the truth is; we all have a terminal illness, and every second brings us closer to death. And death is the final exam of our life.
In this episode we share the story of our friend, and how she passed this exam through daily activities and decisions that promoted spiritual growth. You’ll hear how the foundation is understanding that we and our loved ones are all spirit souls - part and parcel of the Supreme Soul - and our nature is eternal, wise, and blissful. And we need knowledge and guidance coming from a living spiritual teacher, someone who is above illusions. We speak about how the karmic reactions actually decide how much time we have in this lifetime, and how we can choose to come to terms with death and learn how to prepare for it.
We also look at the importance of a daily mantra meditation practice, something that helps us to transcend this material world even before we actually leave our body. We describe how the whole Vedic system aims at directing people to knowing their constitutional position. It provides a step by step process for gradual purification and different practices according to each person's consciousness.

We all know that alcohol abuse causes tremendous negative impacts for individuals and society. The cost of excessive alcohol use in the US alone reaches around $249 billion every year. And the aggression and violence that comes from such an abuse has tremendous impacts through broken families, traumatised children, etc.
But a recent scientific study of 25 000 individuals point to the fact that there is no safe amount, that all alcohol consumption is harmful to the brain - something the Vedas have made clear since time immemorial. In this episode we take a closer look at the most wide-spread drug of all. We speak about the idea that ‘everything that exists in nature is meant for humans to consume’ - actually, the reality is that we need to be selective, because different substances that we take in to our bodies bring us into different states of consciousness.
You’ll also hear us talk about how people use intoxicants like alcohol as a way to escape pain and misery, and why this never will produce a good result. Another aspect we touch upon is that all activities we engage in have repercussions (karmic reactions), whether in this lifetime or in future lifetimes. And as society become increasingly based on sense pleasure, there are less and less restrictions to any type conduct, and moral codes are disappearing. You’ll hear us talk about how we no longer have a clear compass to follow, how people are supported to act based on their lust - but lust always leads to anger.
Another important aspect we discuss in recovering from alcohol abuse is that one cannot do it alone. Surrendering to a higher power plays a completely central part in the most successful recovery programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

When we go for winter hikes in freezing temperature, knowing that unforeseen things may happen and that the cold can create dangerous situations, we prepare for it properly and adjust our clothing, food, travel plans, etc. Just like that, in our last talk we described how this is a difficult time period - Kali Yuga, the age of chaos and confusion.
And it is progressively getting more and more difficult. The four pillars of pious life - cleanliness, truthfulness, austerity and mercy - are basically gone and the main focus in the society now is a constant race for collecting more material things. People do not live very long, our physical and mental health is not so great, and we are increasingly frustrated. So how to prepare for kali yuga?
The Vedic literature gives an answer to this question by strongly recommending the process of chanting of the mantras - giving the best protection in the age of kali.

Kali Yuga - the age of chaos and confusion, the age of conflicts and wars, duplicity and corruption. This is the time epoch we are living in right now. Just as we have seconds, year, minutes, millennia, we also have 4 time periods - each with a certain duration, and each with particular characteristics.
If you’d like to see proof, just go online, listen to the news or read the newspaper - and you will see the full spectrum of Kali yuga. Surprisingly, in the Vedic literature, written over 5000 years ago, Kali yuga was predicted and is explained in detail. In this episode, we’ll be reading from the ancient Vedic scripture Srimad Bhagavatam about the characteristics of society and individuals during Kali yuga.
We’ll be speaking about how this world, including our very own bodies, are temporary - and how learning the nature of this world and our actual position leads to peace and understanding. Balakhilya explains how in the beginning of this yuga, many saintly persons gathered together to discuss what they could do to help people in this age. We now have the opportunity to learn from them about how to live a happy and peaceful life in this age. We also peak about how there are so many negative influences in the Kali yuga, and to become aware of these is essential for success on our journey forward.

Jesus said, “Don’t build your house on the sea shore in low tide”. The truth is, it’s our nature to have a permanent, stable situation. That’s why everybody’s trying to achieve it. Because in the spiritual world, there is no birth, no death - you’re not struggling to hold on to anything, because it’s not trying to run away from you.
In today’s episode we speak about various topics related to the temporary nature of this world - and where a true shelter can be found. You’ll hear Balakhilya explain how faith coupled with intelligence is required to make progress, how there is an absolute truth that we can move closer to through a true spiritual process, and the nature of doubts. Maybe in listening to our podcast, or this particular episode, you have doubts rising to your mind. The fact is: doubts can be positive or negative, depending on how you react to them.
You’ll also hear us talk about Elon Musk saying that artificial intelligence is much much more dangerous than nuclear weapons, how we can choose to be controlled by a spiritual influence or by the modes of nature (see episode 12 & 13), and how it’s important to not jump into things ‘over our head’ - we need to take one step at a time, which is equally true for our spiritual life.

“Group singing has been scientifically proven to lower stress, relieve anxiety, and elevate endorphins.” Are you wondering why we are always ending our episodes with a small music meditation? We take a closer look at the powerful physical and mental benefits of kirtan - an ancient form of meditation focused on the hearing and repeating of mantras, accompanied by music.

“Non-violence, truthfulness, honesty, desire for the welfare & happiness of all others, and freedom from lust, anger, and greed, constitute duties for all member of society”
We speak a lot about our rights, but how about our responsibilities? What is my duty as a human being in this world, that will provide for a peaceful and prosperous society? In this episode we talk about how the universal duty for all human beings is to desire the welfare & happiness of all others. You’ll hear about the importance of not just present opinions but the actual truth, the difference between accepting our imperfections and just being OK with it, as well as the Vedic system of dividing society.
Maybe you are a mother or father - with full spectrum of duties and responsibilities of a parent, maybe you are a simple worker or a boss of the company, maybe you have some profession and a lot of duties connected with that. Maybe you have some mission in life that brings with it some activities, duties and responsibilities. According to the Vedas there are four different varnas and ashramas that are defying our position in the society, and there are specific duties that come along with that.
But above all of that we also have prescribed duties of a human beings and qualities that we should cultivate; like non-violence, truthfulness, and honesty. We speak about the importance of actually cultivating these qualities for the better of society and everyone living in it - because when there is no external peace, it’s because there’s no internal peace.

In his younger years he was known as Firebird, a well-known personality in the nightclub hosting community in Toronto, Canada. At the time his life was seeking pleasure through late nights, intoxication and partying but when his health started to decline he figured that something had to change. He wasn’t happy and realized that the lifestyle he was leading wasn’t the answer.
In this episode we sit down for a chat with Jonathan who is currently a highly successful real estate sales person in Toronto, an outstanding long-distance mountain biker, a father - but first and foremost, someone who is leading and promoting a lifestyle of yoga meditation. We discuss the importance of having determination for achieving anything in life, how Jonathan and Balakhilya were and are still pleasure-seekers (the method to achieve it has changed though), and how to balance meditation practice with a busy career. Jonathan reveals his intriguing secret to a healthy back and shares the story of a six day and 500km fatbike ride through the snowy trails of the Durham forest last winter.

Everybody likes stories - and the Vedic literature is full of amazing stories that we can reflect upon. So today we would like to invite you to listen to the famous Vedic story about the hunter named Mrgari. This is a story close to Balakhilya’s heart, since he himself was hunting for a large part of his youth. It is a story about how a change of ones heart is made possible by listening with an open mind and heart, and following the guidance of a true spiritual teacher. Even one such meeting with a saintly person can change ones life for ever. This is exactly the story of Mrgari - the hunter who became a saint. If you listen in, you’ll also get to hear the true meaning of the biblical story of Adam & Eve.
It is never too late for a change, and we all have the possibility to make new decisions everyday.

Society has become so radicalized, racially oriented, ‘us’ versus ‘them’. We are in dire need of absolute truth, an absolute platform to stand on, that can lead us in a direction of unity and true respect. The truth is that we all have different roles to fill in this world. We all have an equal intrinsic value as spirit souls - but just like in a car, every part of a car is not equal. They have different roles to play for the optimal function of the entire system, that ultimately is meant to make spiritual growth possible.

“Your diet is not only what you eat. It's what you watch, what you listen to, what you read, the people you hang around… be mindful of the things you put into your body emotionally, spiritually, and physically.” What do we ‘eat’ with our consciousness? Which mode of material nature, or which influence, do we let ourselves be affected by? And what is the result?
In the second part of our discussion on the psychological influences that control us, we dive into a more practical discussion on how to affect how we are being influenced. And how we can live a life directed towards cultivating the mode of goodness. The modes of passion and ignorance will always lead us into hurt and suffering, but mode of goodness can lift us up and lead us to a sincere search for the absolute truth. The mode of goodness brings light and wisdom, peace, harmony and deep insights into our lives. And by the principles of the yoga lifestyle we can place ourselves under the mode of goodness. Proper diet, lifestyle and good association can help us to invite the mode of goodness into our lives.
It’s up to us, and the choices we make. Remember: we can make this change in our lives - the change that is worth making.

Have you ever heard about three modes of material nature? Probably not, because most of the western people do not even know about its existence and influence upon us. Sattva-guna - mode of goodness, Raja-guna - mode of passion and Tama-guna - mode of ignorance — these are three different forces of material nature, that are influencing us every day. The food that we eat, the way that we interact with others, our likes and dislikes, our tendencies and desires are all under influence of these three modes of nature. Sometimes we are under the influence of the mode of goodness, sometimes passion takes over and sometimes ignorance creeps into our life. But can have a control over the influence of these modes upon ourselves.
By learning about the characteristics of each mode of nature you will be able to find out which mode is currently covering you and work against its negative influence. The knowledge of yoga is not only giving us complete information on this subject of three gunas, but it is also giving us solution how to get out from their clutches.

Did you know that stress is recognized as the #1 proxy killer disease today? The American Medical Association has noted that stress is the basic cause of more than 60% of all human illness and disease.
Statistics are cruel: 77 percent of people experience stress that affects their physical health. 73 percent of people have stress that impacts their mental health. And about 33 percent of people report feeling extreme stress and 32% said they had had suicidal thoughts and feelings because of stress.
In many cases depression and anxiety follow the longterm stress. Anger and violence caused by stress fructify in uncontrolled attacks and school shootings like recent Boulder massacre, that shows how destructive the stress and constant pressure can be.
Unfortunately we cannot change the stressful world around us, BUT we can find a secret spot where there is a shelter (even in the eye of the storm). With the process of meditation originating from the yoga tradition we can dive deeper - like into the depth of the ocean where there is always peace and balance - even if there is a storm or Tsunami on the surface, divers are safe and peaceful in the depth. So if we will dive deep enough into meditation, even big problems of life will become just like a blip on the radar. But it is up to us if we want to try, if we want to take this step.

Why is it that bad things happen to seemingly good people? Can I change my destiny, or am I predestined to follow a certain path in life? What did Jesus mean when he said “As you sow, so shall you reap”? In today’s episode, we look closer at karma, destiny, and the role of our free will.
You’ll first hear Balakhilya give a thorough explanation of the term ‘Karma’. Then we look closer at a misunderstanding that many people have; namely that we voluntarily choose to be born in a certain life situation, and that we do that do learn certain lessons. We speak about a truly compassionate person will use the idea of karma is the most beneficial way, teaching people how to live to not experience future suffering. Like Balakhilya says, “Real compassion is a condition of the heart”.
You’ll hear about how Balakhilya himself was a vegetarian, but used to serve meat stakes to customers in a restaurant - not seeing how everyone related to the meat (killing the animal, transporting it, serving eat, etc) gets equal future suffering, or karma for such activities. We discuss how we can make progress in life, which actually means going beyond both bad and good karma. Getting off the wheel of birth and death is the aim.
We also talk about how one can make progress toward changing one’s life, and the necessity of actually purifying the heart to make that possible.

Have you ever wondered what ‘life’ actually is? Still today, modern science has no clear idea of what ‘life’ means. Actually, life and matter are two completely different energies. Life is always alive, and matter is always dead. In today’s episode we look closer at the difference between matter and life, something that gives us the opportunity to truly understand questions such as “How can I truly feel alive?”. Understanding life itself also provides a solid foundation for coming to know who we are, and what our life is really for.
In our talk we speak about how a robot hitchhiked across Canada, the dangers of artificial intelligence, and how we can develop tolerance toward the imperfect situation we’re in in this world. Balakhilya explains how what we are actually looking for to feel life, is love (and we are constantly looking for more extreme ways to prove ourselves externally, to prove that we are worth something). We end the discussion by talking about how meditation can bring us back to life.

In today’s world, so many things pass as ‘spiritual’. But what does real spirituality actually mean, and what is the result of engaging in psychedelics, kundalini yoga, or thinking ‘I am everything’? In today’s talk we start off by discussing something Balakhilya’s dad told him in regards to intoxication, namely ‘If you don’t start anything you don’t have to quit’. Actually, all bona-fide spiritual processes teach refraining from intoxication as a prerequisite for spiritual development.
We speak about what can be the result of using psychedelics, how kundalini yoga can help us experience our true spiritual nature, and how we inherently and eternally need a loving relationship. From there Balakhilya explains the 2 ways to acquire knowledge, how self-satisfaction is the solution to the environmental crisis, and the path to get the ultimate, natural ‘high’. You’ll also hear Balakhilya explain the meaning of the mantras we are using and why we use those.

Death can be the most painful and scary experience we face in our life. It can be the death of family members, friends, lovers or even our pets. And it also brings with it a lot of fear, especially of our own death, which is always there lurking in the back of our minds. Still, about 70% of us have never had a conversation about death. Can you imagine? And 60% of us would want to have such a conversation.
Today's talk is about the meaning of death, what actually happens when we die, and how we can prepare for that moment. Because the truth is that death is unavoidable in this material world. As the ancient yoga text Bhagavad-gita states; "For one who is born, death is certain". Many of us are afraid of the unknown – but this talk can give you true wisdom and freedom from the fear of death.

We’ve probably all experienced how all sorts of unwanted things pop up in our heads. So many people today struggle on the mental level, in the form of depression, anxiety, and restlessness. It is said that the mind can either be our best friend, or our worst enemy. But how do we make this a reality in our lives? Should we try to stop the thoughts, or is it possible to give the mind a productive direction?

Do you also feel like you don't really fit in, like there's another calling? In this first episode of Breaking Trail, we dive into the question of how to be true to oneself. Knowing who I really am, and with proper guidance, I can stay true to myself and make a serious decision to change my life to achieve true happiness that lasts. Life is a big mystery when trying to follow the recipe to success and happiness laid out by society at large. Living in what's been called 'the Century of the Self', everything is about I, me, and mine.
The problem is, we are basing our idea of who we are on untruth. So it's an absolute necessity for us to dare to break ground, look into ourselves, and explore the truth of who we actually are. Like Balakhilya says in this episode; “When you know, actually know, that you're doing the right thing with your life; that's huge".

Life is a journey. It really is. It’s an eternal journey, because we are eternal. It’s not going to end when the body ends, this is just one blip on the radar. Life is a puzzle, but every little piece of the puzzle that you put in it’s proper place gives you a little better picture of the whole thing. So you add this piece, that piece, this bit, that bit, and pretty soon you’re inspired to go to a higher level. And not only physically but mentally, and not only mentally but consciously and spiritually. One build on the other. It all is part of a program that is changing things in your life. It’s all leading in a positive direction, step by step. Life Is meant to be joyous, really. But if you’re trying to have a joyous life from material sources, then it won’t be joyous. Do we need all these extra things, do we need all this material success, do we need all these things we don’t have - or not? There’s a saying in the Vedas; simple living, high thinking. We’re going to be on the journey regardless, so why not make it the best journey we can make it? It’s an experience, it’s not just a philosophy. You’ll feel better right away. Really, you will. You’ll feel better inside. One step at a time, one step at a time, that’s all. Never give up. Never give up.
