This one was a really, REALLY hard subject to record!

As we've looked at before, building a brighter future will mean we need to work with people who aren't like us. Maybe even they've harmed us in some way, or we them.

Building a brighter future is going to need us all to build some bridges.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Why we need to forgive
  • Why forgiveness is strength, not weakness
  • Why it's rarely a one time thing
  • When we need to forgive ourselves

A lot of this is based on my own personal experiences and experiments that I share in the episode.

I hope you enjoy it and do let me know your thoughts!

To build a brighter future will require lots of us working together. Many different people, from varied backgrounds and with diverse views.

For that to be successful, we're going to have to learn to understand other people and to be respectful of our differences.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Why we need to be respectful
  • How to be respectful of others' views
  • When it's OK not to be respectful

A lot of this is based on my own personal experiences and experiments that I share in the episode.

I hope you enjoy it and do let me know your thoughts!

In this episode I talk about:

  • How everyone wants to be treated
  • Why we're all like traffic
  • The impact of small acts of kindness

As I said in the last episode, we need to keep learning, and there's lots of information out there to help us. BUT this information isn't all the same quality and so we'll have to be very selective about what we take on board. We all need to learn to think more critically.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Why all information isn't equal
  • How to consider information critically
  • The need to hear both sides of a story
  • Should we really listen to everyone?
  • How information is like food for the mind

A lot of this is based on my own personal experiences and experiments that I share in the episode.

In this episode I'm exploring Idea 3 from my Manifesto for a Brighter Future - Keep learning.

No one has all of the answers we need. No one. The best leaders are all lifelong learners - constantly seeking out new knowledge in their areas of interest and expertise.

In this episode I talk about:

  • The reasons that we need to keep learning
  • Great sources of information
  • The need to relearn when the world changes
  • Why you need to pass on your knowledge

A lot of this is based on my own personal experiences and experiments that I share in the episode.

Last week I introduced the ten ideas that make up my Manifesto for a Brighter Future. In this episode I'm exploring Idea 1: Be Yourself.

If we're going to build a brighter future for us all, it's going to take all of us working together.

To do this effectively then it's vital that we each understand our own unique skills, gifts and abilities (our "superpowers") and how we can use these to help everyone else.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Why we need to understand our gifts
  • Why most of us have never thought about this
  • What we can do to make a start (three simple tips)

I mention the 16 Personalities test and it can be found here:

When I began working on this project, I started to create what I'm calling my "Manifesto for a Brighter Future".

It's a simple guide, a set of ten ideas, that will help us all to work towards the brighter future that we want to create.

The ten ideas are:

  1. Be yourself
  2. Stay healthy
  3. Keep learning
  4. Think critically
  5. Be kind
  6. Spread joy
  7. Be respectful
  8. Forgive easily
  9. Think globally
  10. Take action

In this episode, I outline what I mean by each of these points. I'll expand on each of them in future episodes and even plan to write it up in the form of a short book too (very much a work in progress!)

I'll try and open a Q&A here on the podcast so that you can let me know what you think. Please be kind and constructive!

Thanks and I hope you enjoy the episode!

It's a first for the podcast this week as I did my first interview!

For many of us, one of the most important things we have to think about for the future are our careers. Working with a sense of purpose, making the most of our skills and abilities, will be essential if we're to build a brighter future for us all.

Mark Crossfield is a career coach who I've known for some time. He helps people who are feeling stuck to make the shift to career paths that better fit their abilities and values.

In this fascinating interview, Mark talks about:

  • The "invisible script" that many of us follow blindly into careers that may not suit us
  • Mark's "Manhattan Moment" when he realised he had to make a serious change
  • How to understand what the right career might be for you
  • Making small experiments to try different career directions
  • The importance of continuous learning
  • The need to develop flexibility and resilience
  • How to build your personal brand and network

I really enjoyed doing this interview as Mark really knows his stuff!

The quote Mark referenced from Bono is: " You can disagree on everything but still work together on one thing... if that one thing is important enough."

There's a cameo contribution from Autumn, one of my two dogs towards the end too...

Mark's "Books for a Brighter Future":

  • Factfulness by Hans Rosling
  • Progress by Johan Norberg

His "Song for a Brighter Future":

  • Beautiful Day by U2

“Are you a fish or a monkey?”

Silly question? Well, yes but it illustrates a good point!

The episode is based on this quote:

“Everyone is born a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

If we judge ourselves by our ability at things we’re not strong at, we’ll feel like a failure. But when we understand what our unique skills and abilities are, then that’s the key to:

  • Finding our flow
  • Building great teams
  • Developing thriving and successful businesses
