Having invaded his home in Hood River, commandeered his wifi, made cups of English tea, used his electricity to top up the airbeds, charged all electronic devices, and had a good poo, we figured we ought to sit down and do a podcast with the man of the hour, Ewan Jaspan.

Ewan has been on Freddie and Liam's radar for decades as a professional kiteboarding athlete, pioneer amongst both the freestyle and wakestyle, and a standout filmmaker. Whilst he still pushes hard on the kite, he has been as hooked by foiling as the rest of us and rarely a windy day at the hatchery will go by without him sending a few laps with a paddle or parawing in hand.

Nowadays Ewan is the lead parawing and kite designer for Naish who will soon by release the appropriately named 'Hatch' parawing. This is his baby from start to finish and is a firm favourite amongst those locals lucky enough to have experienced the prototype iterations through its development. It is a product we are excited to see hit the market.

It’s a wonder we’ve made it this long without chatting to Paul before, but we were very glad to finally sit down and chat all things Foildrive and surf foil.

Paul’s been around a while now in foiling, converting pretty much entirely to Foildrive use in the surf - and you must have seen his air’s in the waves by now. Freddie especially was very keen to chat about his favourite foiling movie, the Bali movie which Paul was in charge of a year or so ago - another one worth watching if you haven’t already!

There’s also big chat here about how much it would take to get Freddie to try nail a backflip on a wing. Give it a listen for the value - I don’t think it’s unachievable at all. If anyone wants to stump up the cashola - I’ll nail that backflip to a wall!

We sat down with Gabe, Designer at Slingshot. He is one of a team of designers/engineers and focuses on wing, parawing and board design. Between our conversation with Gabe and chat with Bobby not too long ago, it feels like Slingshot have an exciting mix of fresh engineers and established experience and I’m excited to see what other innovations come out in the coming years.

We've all been running around like blue arsed fly's for the last few days while the AWSI show was on - both sets of Podcasters trying to get interviews recorded with as many people as possible while they were all in one place.

Old School strapless kitesurf pioneer turned downwind and parawing frother.

Huge amounts of content was consumed of Patricks early days strapless kitesurf riding when Liam and I were honing our kite skills and now he's churning out the videos of his downwind runs along the Oregon and Californian coastline.

Patrick was kind enough to offer us a place to crash as we drove down the coast past his town last year on our trip, and we spent a great morning chatting all things kitesurf and foil history - we knew we'd need to sit down and record eventually. It may have taken 10 months - but its a banger.

A little catch up on the news and whats been going on in our local area for the last couple weeks

A busy week for the social calendar and a busy week on the water!

The boys have a quick debrief on the wedding of Guy & Emma, dive more into the downwind SUP vs Parawing debate, reflect on cross-discipline technical learnings and much more.

A busy couple weeks on the water and a lot of findings from our own sessions - we set some time aside in order to talk about a couple fun bits that've been occuring in the foiling world but actually ended up dissecting our own findings - which ended up being a lot of fun.

Downwind paddling and parawinging mainly on the cards here, with some winging thrown in the mix to keep it Generic. Liam has a revelation, and Freddie's struggling along with everything as always....

Mikes back - after a pretty horrendous time in his life - but as positive and upbeat as ever!

We had a great chat with Mike back towards the start of our mighty podcasting careers and we've kept in touch. He had a terrible health scare in 2024 and we're very glad to hear of his recovery and journey back to tip top shape.

We recorded before Christmas, so its great to see some of what we discussed re. the parawing come to life since then. Fingers crossed Mike makes it to AWSI this year so we can finally share a beer!

We got to spend some time chilling in the carpark of Hood River with Aidan back in September (did we tell you we went to Hood River?) and he was nice enough to be one of the folks who lent us a downwindering board while we were there too.

No doubt you've all seen videos of him shredding on the interweb, and he was one of the standout riders on the water through AWSi for Liam and I.

Fast forward a couple of months and we managed to steal some time from his busy schedule to book in a recording to find out even more about him! We also discuss his role in Armstrong and how thats grown as well as the brands direction itself and what he's got coming up in the coming year.

We very briefly met Simeon in Hood River, but as he was just finishing up his Voyager Clinic with paying clients we didn't all have the time to sit down together over a Modelo.

Thankfully through the power of the internet we've managed it!

You can't have missed the impact the Voyager Foiling crew have had on the downwind scene over the past few years and we were really looking forward to sitting down with the man behind the hats! We chat through all things Voyager as well as Simo's thoughts on the surf culture and how it impacts the newer downwind scene.

Fingers crossed we get to share a beer with the man himself along with the rest of the Voyager crew at some point in the future.

Frank’s boards have had people murmuring and whatsapping naughty photos back and forth for a while now. We were lucky enough to see them in the flesh in Hood River…our man Luke wouldn't shut up about getting hold of one. Liam managed to have a good chat with him in the states on the AXIS stand at AWSI.

Surprisingly, stood in front of a couple of Frank made boards with full red Axis livery and logos, when asked what the deal is between Frank and Adrian (Axis), they both laughed and replied with “we don’t know yet, that’s what we are here to find out”. So, we were very happy to sit down and learn more now that we’re a few weeks on and an agreement seems to have come to fruition .

Italian born, Maui based. Working for Quattro and his neighbour Mark Raphorst has given this ex kitesurfer a massive amount of experience to begin experimenting with his downwind board designs.

His downwind shape design is the main point of conversation, but we do delve into his parawinging thoughts, midlength and his prone shapes too.

Chitty chatty in person with the legends themselves.

He doesn't need any introductions, he's been weasling his way onto our screens since the beginnings of foiling and he's all over the social media's. Managing to squeeze himself now into the pivotal marketing role at Code Foils and as a worldwide Foildrive Ambassador!

We'd been trying to line things up with Josh for a long time, but he's a busy man and our mega social media prowess also means we're busy nowadays too! FINALLY at the AWSI event we got to meet the man himself, firstly in a diner over breakfast in town of all places.

The show was busy for all of us, so we decided to use jet lag to our advantage and record as early as possible, on the beach at Hood River Event site - hence the awesome cover photo. A beautiful backdrop, with the rest of the industry setting up their tents behind us as we learnt about Josh's background and his views on foiling as it is today.

Daniela Moroz - 6x Formula Kite World Champion, 4x US Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, 2024 Olympian.When we chatted with Daniela, she had not long come back from representing the USA in the first ever formula kite olympic competition in Marseille, France...what a wild ride she had. In this podcast she tells us all about he introductions to kite foiling, her experience as an olympic favourite entering the games, the still unclear outcome of the final rounds and much much more. Daniela wears her heart on her sleeve, is an impressive sailor, impressive athlete, impressive all around person and both genuinely lovely and inspiring. We were supposed to meet her in person to record this episode whilst on the road in the states but her hectic schedule pulled her away from home. Now that we've had a couple of hours chatting the chat, we're even more motivated to get a mic under her nose in person.

In come Richard and Benoit from AFS foils, to give us some insight in how they've exploded onto the scene over the last couple years.

Richard is a man who's been around the industry a long time - previously as a pro kiter for Flexifoil back in the days before that brand exploded loudly.... He's since started as 'International Business Developer' at AFS and also been smashing the downwinding in France. Benoit lives in Texas is heading up the distribution of AFS and Sooruz wetsuits in the US.

Dylan Shewfelt - everybody's favourite 'Uncle Knobhead'

Liam was invited a while ago now to the 2023 North Dealer Meeting in Portugal to review some kites for IKsurf and TONIC Magazine. There, he bumped into Dylan and instantly decided they would be friends. As someone else who was there not only to try the new products but to also hunt for the best conditions possible to try said products. No point trying wave kit in flat water conditions, right?!

Fast forward to our little AWSI trip and they got to hang out again and Freddie was introduced. Dylan is there wearing many hats. He is there as a customer, there helping out on the North stand, browsing other products all while competing against us for 'Best Podcasters at AWSI' with his 'X Foils' show and 'Best looking podcasters at the AWSI'. He only won the later of those.

Dylan is another very resourceful bloke with fingers in many pies in our Industry that everyone seems to know - his energy is annoyingly infectious. He also rips on anything water related. Its frustrating. Eitherway, we got time to sit down at 7am and chat and we all loved it.

Johnny might not need any introduction to anyone that has been interested in windsports for a while, but they might need a hand picking him out of a crowd as he masks himself and lurks in the shadows. Ken Adgate introduced us to this hooded fella, hood elastic synched tight to cover as much of his face as possible, and also wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.... it was only the one and only Johnny Heineken!

A chap we'd been hoping to pin down for a while - we were lucky enough to do so in Slingshot's offices in Hood River. We escaped the heat of the day mooching round an air cooled office to end up sitting on a balcony in the shade, overlooking the entire event going on below us.

Fred is one of those foilers who you can spot a mile off. His kitefoil riding changed the game and it is very difficult not to notice his insane freeriding ability when he's on the water. Nowadays he's taken on a pretty sick role at Slingshot HQ in his home town, and runs us through his role and the brand through his eyes, along with what else he gets up to.

Please welcome Cynthia ‘Cynbad’ Brown onto the podcast. We got to sit down and chat with Cynthia while she was over from Hawaii and working on the Ozone stand at the AWSI show. She is an absolute whirlwind of a character, a legend in our sports, and has stories to keep us all listening for hours.

Competing in windsurfing in the 80’s through to pioneering hobby parachute downwinding now, she’s been a part of it all. The random fact that Laird Hamilton taught her to surf should say it all - you’re going to enjoy this one, even if you’ve not come across Cynthia before.

What a great story these two have - spending all their life savings to start up something of their own and having the wildest year of their lives so far. One of the cool things about this trip we're finding is being able to stick microphones in interesting peoples faces anytime we're all sat around hanging out, and (hopefully) it not being weird.

Big Aussie Luke has been hanging out for us since the AWSI event finished, and we've had a couple mornings sat around in Kenny's garage shooting the shit. As always thats when the best stuff gets discussed and so we switched the coffee machine on and sat there a bit longer.

A properly split episode - half about Ken, winging, Mikeslab kit and board building, and half about Freddies 3rd SUP coach Luke and his downwind and prone journey.

There's been so much going on in such a short space of time here, its difficult to keep up with everything and we want our listeners to come along for the ride as much as possible. Its difficult to know how and when to release interviews and videos to you all in an orderly fashion!

This week we welcome Lord and Lady Bridge of Exmouth to our little show. Famous across the county and further afield in the wing/kite industry and incredibly well regarded - nobody forgets meeting Steph and Eric Bridge.

From starting a small sailing school back in the 80's in their home town of Exmouth, to now running one of the most successful kite/wing schools and shops in the UK - The Bridges have seen it all. Multiple world titles for Steph in a fledgling kite race scene, followed by guiding their 3 boys (Olly, Guy, Tom) to become some of the best watermen to ever have come out of the UK.

We both call the Bridge family friends, (as well as ex employers of both of us) and we thank them for allowing us to invade their house with our aim to get them to sit still for an entire hour and talk to us on record.... Everyone who knows any of the family will know how much of an effort that can be for all of them. We did have to contend with scheduled haircuts mid way through - but Eric did a good job of holding the microphone while sitting in the chair. How I wish we had photos of that.... It does mean that this chat only scratches the surface of their accomplishments, and we'd love to do another episode with them. We are going to have to rethink the recording though as they really only rarely sit down.

Freddie's away so Liam has a chat with local boy Jack Salmon. A name that is already likely to be known by UK folk, Jack has the potential to take things further in the watersports industry once he has got his degree out of the way.

Not only is he a talented waterman that excels in every discipline he takes his hand to, but he's an energetic creative that also enjoys his time behind the camera and producing videos.

I'm sure we'll see more and more from the salmon as time goes on.

Ellie is a kite racer. A very good kite racer. She's qualified for the Olympics in July 2024 to represent the UK - which means she takes foiling far more seriously than Liam and Freddie do.

This week she gives us a run down of the entire Olympic process - which despite an interest in the Kitefoil racing we were pretty unaware of. She runs us through her background from 49erFX sailing to learning to kitefoil in a rapidly evolving world.

Ellie's also been ramping up her wing foil and tow in skills while having down time on her foiling camps in Mexico and Fuerte (lucky lass) and gives us a run through of her...... as well as her plans post Olympics 2024.

Many foiling related items get thrown in room 101 and the gang get nostalgic on the past year and beyond.

The son of the founder, Julien gives us a run down of how his position within the business has changed over the years and how it was during the early years of F-One.

F-one shouldn't need any introduction to anyone in foiling - they hit the nail on the head so early on with their Swing Wing and have backed that up with not only more wings, but also a fantastic range of foils and a solid board selection. How has a reasonably small french company done so well globally?

This is a big one! The Kernow Foil Classic will go down in all time history as one of the most significant events in foiling in the UK (and worldwide in our biased opinion). It deserved a proper debrief, especially given that Freddie wasn't there! All founding Wang Lordz committed to driving an hour or so to meet up at a central location in a pub on the A30. The first 4 way conversation we've done, and we've done it with pints, mixel grills and bloody football on in the background.... lets just say the editing was time consuming.

So, October 2023 saw the UK's first surf foil competition down in Cornwall hosted by Chris Burke/Poseidon and his team, and it couldn't have gone better. Loads of riders and perfect conditions for it. In this episode event organiser Chris and event judges Liam and Rich fill Freddie in on what he missed by having to work elsewhere that weekend instead.

We finally managed to schedule in a sit down with Mr Armstrong after weeks of trying - the mans been all over the shop recently and finding a time zone was proving difficult! From New Zealand to China to the States to Maui, he has been all over in the last couple of months!

We ended up having a fantastic couple of hours discussing all things Foiling and Armstrong as well as his recent completion of the Maui to Molokai downwind race in preperation for the big Molokai to Oahu later this month.

We talk XPS wings, the HA origins, Armies links with the NZ sailing lot - tonnes of gems in this one and hopefully it comes across how much fun we had.

Liam was in Portugal recently for the 2023 North Dealer meeting working with the iKsurfmag and Tonic media team. He managed to sit down with Uli Sommerlatt (North Product Development Manager) with the particular focus. What does the North product design process look like? How much do North compare their product offerings to their competitors? Do North still feeling they are ‘playing catch up’ in the industry and what products can we expect soon?

With the all New Spitfire range from AXIS dropping worldwide, we managed to persuade Adrian Roper to join us on the podcast! Very happy about this one, Liam and I had a great time recording it and it was awesome to finally get to ask Adrian some questions we'd be considering for a long while.

For me (Freddie), Adrian was the first person I wanted as a guest when Liam and i started talking about doing some podcasting - a super interesting bloke with a great background in windsurfing, kitesurfing and now foiling.

Please welcome Tom Earl onto the Podcast - A member of Unifoils international team of riders and undoubtably the UK's most prominent prone foil surfer.

Freddie was down in Cornwall a couple weeks back and managed to persuade Tom to come for a chinwag over Zoom with Liam back in Devon. We managed a mini session beforehand but Freddie ballsed up the timings and got in at the wrong tide, only to watch Tom smashing a few waves before getting out as the waves dissapeared.....

Tom may have only been foiling for a couple of years but has steadily built a solid following of riders who want to watch footage of his smooth style at his home spot down in Kernowfornia. A competitive surfer ever since he was a kid growing up in the surf mecca of the UK - Newquay - Tom took to foiling naturally, and has obviously been drawn to a more shortboard surf style of foiling. For us, this was great to chat about as coming from a windsports background we have a different angle of appreciation.

This week we got to chat with Charles Bertrand, a naval architect who's worked as part of the foil and board design team at F-One for approx 12 years. Liam talks all things engineering with Charles, learning how they go from a new product brief to a fully working item on the market, while Freddie twiddles his thumbs in the corner not really understanding much of what the other two talk about.

What've F-one got in the pipeline? Where does the company aim to place itself in the market? How does using less HM carbon in some of the front wings can actually become of benefit? We delve into a tonne of rabbit holes.

We discuss a session in Bantham once more that could've ended a lot worse than it did, but was still very slightly terrifying for Freddie - we all have bad sessions, its just a case of figuring out how to deal with them and stay safe!

Freddie visited Gong last week, and the instagram video released by us caused a few people to get in contact with their thoughts - which we encourage and enjoyed discussing further.

and finally, we're seriously toying with the idea of hosting an afternoon/evenings event later in the year in order to get together with our listeners and have a chin wag about all things foiling. The idea being to offer our listeners the ability to come and chat with some industry folk in a less sales orientated way but an ability to have chats with the brands you want to talk to and to attend a few clinics run by board builders and coaches to hopefully learn some way of improving your kit selection and/or riding too. Obviously beer and food would be involved also. Would anyone be interested? If so, let us know what things you may want to do and even where you think it may be best being held. We're currently toying with the idea of south coast/Poole direction due to the vast majority of wingers down there, but also maybe Exeter/Exmouth (the home of the generic foiling podcast).

This week we sat across Zoom to chat to Mike Raper - Brand Manager and Co-founder at North Kiteboarding and North Foils, all the way over in Auckland, NZ. Mikes been around the watersports industry for a very long time and has held numerous senior positions within it - initially with the Pryde Group and Cabrinha Kites, and now running the ever successful North Kiteboarding and North Foils.

Welcome back to a week with Liam and Freddie! We catch up on a busy couple of weeks after our last two episodes released were interviews. We spend some time discussing the safety concerns of surfers around foiling most specifically in Cornwall. Again we're completely out of our depth with the finer details of the discussion, but after some messages to and fro with Tom Earl down in Newquay it became apparent that there may be an issue forming that may explode in the near future. This lead us on to wondering whether we should be reaching out and chatting to those who are concerned at the likes of the RNLI over here in the UK - we wonder what their take is on the discipline so far, and how do we train the public in how to react when they see something new like a foil in the water?

A great episode for those of you interested in the nitty gritty side of board design and the best in the business production methodology. Wieger is the Co-founder and head shaper for Appletree Surfboards. In this episode he explains how Appletree set themselves apart from the competition and came to manufacture boards with their vacuum infusion production process and why this is so suitable for both the kite surfboards, for which they first became well known, and PERFECT for any foil board which needs to be light, stiff and durable.

Wieger talks us through the origins and growth of his company and brand and how the explosion of foiling disciplines has affected the operations and future outlook of the business. Why did they move the entire production process to Portugal and stay in the EU? He details their environmental motivations and successes which Appletree aims to maximise by not only producing their own product in house but bringing production back from Asia for other brands too. They aim to improve the quality of kit on the market overall.

Episode 17 - James Casey - Coach Casey Club

We FINALLY got the chance to sit down with James and discuss all things Downwinding. This was our chance to learn how to Downwind in a 2 hour discussion from one of the best in the business (We're yet to put that to the test on the water but James told us everything we'd need to know - how hard can it be now?!).

Waterman Extraordinaire, James Casey's following has grown as downwind foiling has become more popular and is now on a tonne of foilers' radars. James was a downwind SUP race athlete before trying foiling back in 2017 and has since helped push the sport of Downwind Foiling massively - culminating most recently in a world record 200km run in 11 hours 17 minutes non stop foiling.

Among this episode you can expect to hear James' thoughts on which kit we'll need to get set up ready for downwind as well as board sizing suggestions and what he takes with him on both longer and shorter runs. We try and compare this to how it'll be once downwinding takes off in the UK.

We hear how many times James has had the coastguard called on him after getting calls from the public thinking someones being swept out to sea. This is an ongoing discussion between Liam and Freddie who have also had run in's with the RNLI in the past.

We'd like to get Rich on the podcast every now n again to have a general chin wag about the foil industry and whats going on, so look out for any episodes titled anything 'Wang Lordz' related. Otherwise we've got a growing list of people we'd like to interview and even a few people reaching out to us - so expect to see more of a routine of interview one week, Liam and Myself the next. Liam and Freddie are back and more hyped than ever for The Generic Foiling Podcast in 2023. The conditions lined up for a homespot session in Exmouth together the day after Liam's return from Antigua so the boys got to wing together then record the first podcast of the year in person.

In this episode the boys discuss the benefits and restrictions of low volume wing boards as Liam has spent a lot of time on the 41L North swell board. Listen to find out what he thinks of this particular model and what you should consider before trying or buying a 'half bodyweight' board.

Liam and Freddie sit down at opposite ends of the world and discuss what Liams been up to in Antigua and how it is a wing/kite spot.

We then get into a conversation on mast stiffness and Liam gets stuck into the techy side of carbon constructions - what actually is High Modulus and why is it the talk of the town at the moment?

We've also had a good amount of listeners reaching out with questions and feedback that we'll hopefully aim to work through properly as we go. Thanks to everyone for listening and anyone who has reached out too, we love hearing from everyone.

Big Rich Boughton lives in South Devon, and it was on the journeys to see Rich at his home spot of Bantham that Liam and I came up with the idea of starting to record a podcast to see if anyone was interested in our ramblings.

Rich runs www.Kitebarn.co.uk - a front of house website to showcase his online retail outlet as well as his kite and wing repair business. In his 'spare' time, Rich is the technical editor of 'The Foiling Magazine' and 'The Kite Mag' (the latter of which his wife Sarah is the editor for). The Boughtons also used to distribute JN kites in the UK, way back when twin tipping was still a thing..... You can say they're well versed in the watersports and windsports industry in the UK, and it definitely won't be the last time we sit down with Richy.

Having always generally preferred to work in the background of the industry, Richy was sceptical about getting involved in a podcast episode until now, when i asked him to jump in and help while Liam was away - Hopefully you'll all agree that his knowledge and charm well deserves air time! His work with the magazines as their chief testerer means he's played on almost every foil you can imagine, and his repair work means he's worked with every wing as well (including our own)

This first episode with Rich discusses the history of Banthams ever growing foiling journey, as well as his favourite foils and what he uses them for. We then also have a little discussion at the end on Gong as a brand - this definitely could be delved into deeper in the future!

Our tenth episode - we made it! This week we discuss Freddies recent experience reducing rear wing sizes and Liam attempts to talk Science about the findings. We also discuss the art of reducing a fuselage size and the benefits it can bring As its our tenth episode we dissect the journey we've had so far producing a podcast and discuss our highlights and lowlights, strengths and weaknesses so far. We're back!

After a couple weeks of busyness - we've not had a proper chance to catch up with each other since our individual interviews - so we spent some time debriefing, before getting into some in-depth chat on the differences between using High aspect and Mid aspect front wings. Is high aspect all it's cracked up to be?!
