It all started when Kath was searching for something stimulating, supported and fun for kids with special needs to do on the weekend. Kath’s daughter, Lara is social and outgoing, and also has intellectual and mild physical disabilities, which means she needs extra support for things like meals and dressing.

Unable to find anything suitable, Kath and her friend Tina – whose son Tom has down syndrome – decided to develop what they were looking for. And so BestLife was created. It started as a pilot program of Saturday night sleepovers – every teenager’s dream – for small groups in a house in Brisbane.

BestLife has been such a hit with kids and families that it has grown to include a variety of fun and supportive programs, sleepovers and more.

If you would like more info about BestLife or would like to donate to the latest project Helena’s House, check out the website: https://bestlifefoundation.com.au

Over the past week, Kym and Judith reflected on all of the amazing women we have spoken to since our Her House journey began back in January 2021 – and all of them are absolutely amazing – so this week we decided to revisit the interview we had with Tracy back in season 1.

An indigenous Australian, Tracy is a triple congenital amputee Paralympic swimmer who won two Gold medals at the 1992 Paralympic games in Barcelona. While she retired from swimming in 1994, she went on to represent Australia at the Shanghai Women’s Sitting Volleyball Tournament in 2008.

Tracy is hilarious, inspiring and extraordinary – and we’re sure you will enjoy listening (or relistening) to her amazing story.

This week we’re speaking to the amazing Marina who founded a Boomerang Bag community on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. By way of background Boomerang Bags is not just about making actual bags as part of a borrow and bring back system, it’s about connecting communities, diverting waste (using cute-as-a-button, handmade boomerang bags rather than plastic ones), starting conversations about sustainability and most of all meeting like-minded people who enjoy having some fun.

We speak to Marina about growing up in England, and how her upbringing set her on a path of being interested in sustainability. We talk about how she came to set up a Boomerang Bag community and how together they have made more than 5,000 bags – and in doing so diverted waste from landfill … and made lots of firm friends.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Marina and her team are branching out to include a beautiful range of bunting (apologies we ran out of time to cover this in the podcast …). Marina is looking for volunteers so if you’re interested in helping out please contact her through the Boomerang Bag website https://boomerangbags.org or drop us a line at Her House.

Based in the Macedon Ranges in Central Victoria, Jen is the host of the popular ‘Hosting with Heart’ podcast, where she explores every nook and cranny of being a popular holiday accommodation host.

In our chat with Jen we hear about the start of her business, through five (or six?) lockdowns, the boom when everything reopened for a few months, and then to her final business transition. We learn about being passionate about what you do, being optimistic in the face of challenges and also about knowing when you’ve had enough.

When Mel’s son, Liam, was diagnosed with Autism in 2003, she was told he wouldn’t speak or show emotion and would most likely be institutionalised. While little was known about treatments for Autism at that time, what followed was a vast range treatments and therapies all designed to help support Liam and give him the best possible start to life.

Fast forward to today, Liam has finished high school, has a part-time job and is surrounded by a loving family who couldn’t be prouder of everything he has achieved.

In this episode, Kym and Judith hear about Mel – and Liam’s – amazing journey. We learn about the incredible love, commitment and dedication a parent can have, stopping at nothing to provide their child with the best possible support.

Ever heard of a high functioning introvert? Either had we until we met Clare, award-winning designer, educator, mother of three and founder of The Little Design Corner (for those non-designers among us, TLDC provides online courses and resources for interior designers, decorators and stylists).

While Clare may describe herself as an introvert she has been putting herself out there since playing the Oboe as a child. From a musical background she chose a corporate career but gave that away in 2012 to pursue her passion for interior design. Since then, Clare has gone from working for free for friends to a seven-figure business. And along the way she has amassed a strong community of online followers in the design space who enjoy her daily advice and pieces of inspiration.

Through Clare’s story we learn that everything happens for a reason, why giving and sharing are gifts, and that focus and discipline can help you achieve your goals.
