NEW EPISODE ALERT.

Hello and welcome to the belated month of January episode. Now for myself "escaping consumerism" has involved thinking about how I can spend my money on things more useful to my health and future. One such way has been budgeting robustly and investing in the stock market. Anuj (@thetradingdoctor) is a colleague of mine at a famous East Midlands hospital with a strong interest in investing and in this episode we seek to dissect some of the very basics. Anuj very eloquently explains what is investing, what a fund/etf is vs shares, as well as basic investing strategies based on your personality type. Now, what we speak about is of course not explicit financial advise (for legal reasons). However, as a wise person once told me "no-one cares about your money more than you". This episode will therefore hopefully provide you some confidence into how we can begin to invest and allow you to make your own informed decisions around finance and savings.

Now @thetradingdoctor is a relatively new IG page but increasingly popular. Anuj goes to great lengths to provide an array of interesting and well-thoughtout concepts and stock picks. His page is definitely one I would recommend and a great point of call for understanding more about the stock market.

Hope you enjoy the episode.

Hello all,

Belated happy holidays and happy new year. The Christmas season and indeed my life since graduating has been marked with periods of spending... End of the month comes around and I'm thinking about the next holiday, the next racket, the next pair of shoes.

In this episode, I begin to unpack consumerism and materialism. I look into what materialism represent, why we are driven towards materialistic tendencies, why they might be bad for us and how we can challenge it.

I think we all know that money doesn't buy happiness but understanding the research may give us insights into why we are the way we are. So join me for a brief chat on consumerism and learn why investing in "stuff" isn't always investing in yourself.

Love as always,

Frankie x

Rounding up my IBD mini-series, I chat with my old friend Pizey.

Now Pizey has had his own individual journey with IBD. Whilst Crohn's and UC are separate entities, this episode seeks to show the similar diseases are experienced and dealt with in different ways.

Individuals own personalities, their background, their severity of disease all play into an individuals overall experience of a chronic disease.

Overall, Pizey's light-hearted and somewhat comedic approach recollecting his experience with Crohn's provides some key insights into the mentioned differences and allows for a more holistic understanding of how IBD can present.

Following on with my IBD mini-series, I speak to Lewis, a very old friend of mine who has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis for over a decade.

In this episode we delve into his journey with UC. The ups, the downs, the effects on his mental health and the continuing impact of the disease on his life.

It was truly a privilege to have Lewis on the podcast and I think this conversation gives a unique perspective on not just IBD and UC but on chronic disease as a whole.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Hello and yet again it is podcast time! This month I am back talking about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

I have decided to speak about this because: 1) I am currently a junior doctor based on a gastroenterology ward so I see lots of patients with IBD. 2) I know lots of individuals whom live with inflammatory bowel disease So this episode forms the first part of my two-monthly series on IBD and this episode is all the basics. 1) Inflammatory Bowel Disease involves a spectrum of autoimmune conditions affecting the bowel and consists mainly of two conditions Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis 2) These are common diseases with UC affecting about 1 in 400 people in the UK whereas Crohn's about 1 in 700 people in the UK. 3) Whilst separate in many ways, both tend to cause profuse diarrhoea and abdominal pain as well as spectrum of other sequelae. 4) This is primarily a chronic disease of younger people. However, can affect older individuals as well (but less commonly) If any of you know individuals who have Crohn’s or UC this podcast is likely to be highly informative. In this I breakdown the subtypes, I explain the basics of the symptoms, how we investigate these disease and finally how we treat these diseases. I give a brief rundown of what the future may look like in terms of treatment and then just give my perspective on Crohn’s and UC. Realistically, any chronic disease represent a huge change in any individuals life. However, Crohn’s and UC as diseases of younger people can be highly damaging to the education and social life of individuals who are meant to be in some of their most formative years. It was this in part that spurred me to do this episode. References in the comments. I’m on all the socials as usual.

Perfectionism in practice

One month on and I am still talking about perfectionism?? Yes indeed. So I have decided to experiment with a slightly different format whereby: 1. Month 1: Ted Talk with myself taking a deep dive into the literature and giving a short and sweet summary. 2. Month 2: A personal feel usually with a guest with relevant or interesting viewpoints surrounding the months previous subject. I feel that this format will allow me to still get a bit deep in the literature but additionally keep true to what this whole thing is about which is being personal and relatable. Furthermore, it takes a bit of pressure off my spare time into something manageable. Update over- this episode. This week I am joined again by the lovely Sanah- A fellow Neuroscience graduate. Sanah is someone who like me grapples with a bit of perfectionism in her everyday life. In the episode, we dissect what perfectionism looks like in our own lives. We think about why we might be perfectionists and why it is both sometimes a positive and a negative. Overall, we come to a collective conclusion that perfectionism can sometimes lead to us being exceedingly goal-orientated whereby the “journey” is somewhat lost on us and furthermore, we contrive little satisfaction in achieving. Ultimately keeping perfectionism in reasonable limits involves: -challenging our inner-self-critic, -dealing with failure in a compassionate way -seeking advise from friends is central to ensuring that perfectionism does not get the better of us.

Hello all and welcome back to RPR.

All things music and all things medicine.

Today I am joined by the lovely Sanah Ali. Sanah is a friend of mine who messaged me about discussing self-growth. Myself and Sanah met about 2 ish years ago whilst we were both studying Neuroscience at the University of Bristol. Since then, we have remained somewhat in touch and I was delighted when she messaged me with this idea for a radio show.

Self-growth in your 20s is a huge topic and this is by no means a comprehensive guide about how to tackle your 20s.

Personally, my major aspects of growth have centred upon my confidence, acceptance and developing my identity. For me, there aren’t single events that have led to this and growing up/making mistakes have allowed me to work out what is what. I think there are a lot of expectations about what university and your 20s should look like. These arise from a whole array of influences and sometimes trying to reconcile these expectations with reality can be difficult. Nevertheless, time moves on and sculpting out your own goals separate from what you “think” your life should look life has been key for my happiness.

Overall, this is simply a conversation between two people about their unique experiences with university, leaving university, change and growing up. If you think this is for you give this a listen!

This week I am fortunate to be joined by yet another one of my exceedingly talented friends. Pedr is a Chemistry graduate and PhD student at the University of Oxford. Almost 3 years ago, Pedr set it upon himself to cycle till “east became west” and nearly completed a full circuit of the globe.

I think when I consider Pedr’s journey, like many others I am impressed but perhaps more so I am intrigued. Why a bike? What possesses an individual to do such a hard task? And what do you learn by cycling that far? In this episode, Pedr answers all these questions and discusses various themes from adversity, community, to fears of being alone, to connecting with nature, and his own theory of “relativity”.

Pedr’s drive and determination is inspirational. For him, the fear of not trying squashed any fears surrounding accomplishing his goals. Importantly, he recognises that you do not necessarily need to cycle through 46 countries to learn the things he has learnt. Moreover, he stresses the importance of engaging with your passions and pushing yourself outside your comfort zones are crucial for a fulfilling and happy life.

Hello all, Happy New Year all. I return today with my first full length episode of Repeat Prescription Radio of 2021. I am a super busy boy at the moment, so I’ve not managed to keep up with all the influencing needed to constantly promote this. However, it saves you a few notifications. This episode was recorded before Christmas and I recorded it whilst preparing myself for a vicious run of nights on A+E. In my sleep-deprived state, you will hear me explain a very simplified version of the physiology underlying sleep, consider some of the health impacts of poor sleep and then explain how you can improve your sleep hygiene. I don’t think I need to explain you the huge importance of sleep nor do I need to quote the numerous diseases poor sleep is associated with. However, in our busy lives and with our current lockdown, our sleep can suffer. Nevertheless, check out the full feature episode on Mixcloud. Abridged bits have been chucked up on Soundcloud, Spotify and Apple Music so if those suit you better then check those out. I’m currently planning my upcoming episodes so keep your eyes peeled. As always thank you for the support and if you have any suggestions of topics you would like me to explore or any improvements, I can make then comment them or message the page.
