In this episode, we hear from thru-hiker founder, and soon to be triple-crowner, Cheer, as she continues her 2023 thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail! This episode covers weeks 11 and 12 on the AT through the state of Pennsylvania!
Week 11 started in Pine Cove Furnace in Pennsylvania where Cheer enjoyed her best burger on trail so far! Southern Pennsylvania was pretty flat traveling through farmlands and a nice stop at Caffe 101 for lunch! Week 11 ended starting with a rough day on trail where Cheer got lost for a little bit and then took a rest staying at a nice AirBnB in Port Clinton.
Week 12 begins in Northern Pennsylvania below the New Jersey border. As rocks got bigger and more prevalent, Cheer decides to pace herself a little reducing miles and taking more breaks. Good weather and views balanced things out.

Week 10 on the Appalachian Trail covers the miles from Front Royal, Virginia through Harpers Ferry in West Virginia and finishing at Pine Grove Furnace in Pennsylvania.
This was one of Cheer's favorite weeks on the AT and included hiking through the 'Roller Coasters' section in Virginia with intense climbs and descents, crossing the 1000 mile marker and into the unofficial half way point in Harpers Ferry which hosts the AT Conservancy where Cheer got her photo taken and was able to see her progress relative to other AT Hikers who also checked in there. Cheer crossed through Maryland featuring historic civil war battlegrounds, crossing the Mason Dixon line, lots of good trail magic and finished with amazing burgers at Pine Grove Furnace!

In this recording from one of our community meetups via Zoom, John Ladd presents his trailcraft ideas for JMT (or John Muir Trail) hikers. During this presentation, John goes over lesser known trail hacks based on his experience in the Sierra, his extensive research, and JMT survey results. John has spent over 250 days in the Sierra range over the past 12 years and is the head of many JMT social networks. He also has conducted annual post-hike surveys since 2012 and now has information from 6,000 hikes totalling in at 1 million miles. If you are a future JMT hiker (or even a weekend backpacker or longer distance hiker) definitely give this a listen; you'll probably learn something and gain takeaways that could enhance future hikes!

In this episode, the THRU-r community (once again) welcomes Ned Tibbits - a PCT and JMT thru-hiker as well as a Wilderness Skills Instructor (among many other things). Ned has hiked, taught, and conducted rescue efforts in the Sierra section of the PCT for many years, and he is a great resource for information on snow travel and safety. Here, we include the recording from our interactive Zoom meetup to help hikers prepare for the upcoming season.
During this meetup, Ned gave us his best tips and tricks for over-snow navigation including safe passage, how to follow a buried trail under snow, where to walk, and more. Ned specifically focuses on locations in the Sierra range (great for NOBO PCT hikers). However, this is a great listen even if you aren't hiking NOBO on the PCT but have snow travel planned in your future, or if you're an early season JMT hiker.
Ned has founded a non-profit organization which promotes wilderness safety called Mountain Education. If you feel like this information added value to your hiking preparation, consider donating to thank him for his time and knowledge. You can donate here.
