Growing up in Miami, Kat was surrounded by global influences in art, music, and fashion, all of which sparked her creative journey. She later moved to Hawaii in 2009, a pivotal moment that re-energized her artistic vision and allowed her to connect with the local art scene.
Kat’s bold, colorful style is inspired by Barbie dolls, Disney movies, Pin-up art, and 70s Latina glam, elements that have become signature features in her work. She speaks about her journey from being a graphic designer to making the leap into full-time artistry, a transition marked by her big break designing the official poster for the Vans Women’s Triple Crown of Surfing in 2009. This opportunity opened the doors for her to pursue her passion full-time and contribute to Hawaii's artistic fabric.

Formed in the spring of 2023 in West Philly, the band's fusion of Andean-American and Latinx Punk elements serves as the cornerstone of their distinct sound.
Mariposas Galacticas is not your typical band; they boast an ensemble of 10-12 musicians and incorporate a mix of cultures including Indigenous/Ecuadorian roots & Jewish-American heritage/Klezmer elements into their performances. Their music is amplified by unique instruments, such as the haunting Saw player, contributing to their authentic orchestral Cumbia sound.
Beyond the music, Mariposas Galacticas sees their art as a tool for liberation and healing. They actively support local organizations and causes through their performances. The band aims to spread joy and healing through their music, leaving audiences with a profound sense of unity and inspiration. Mariposas Galacticas reminds us that music transcends borders, connecting us through the universal language of melody and emotion.

Capítulo 66: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión, we have the pleasure of sitting down with Arthur Bryan Marroquin, the creative force behind ABM Photography. Arthur's journey into the world of photography is nothing short of fascinating, as it began with him in front of the camera as a model and actor at Missy's Modeling Studio in the picturesque Rio Grande Valley, deep in the heart of Texas.
During his time in front of the camera, Arthur discovered a deep passion for the artistry behind the lens. He realized that he enjoyed not only being a subject but also creating his own art through photography. In 2006, Arthur made the pivotal decision to invest in his first professional camera, and from that moment on, he embarked on a journey of continuous learning and growth in the world of photography. Along the way, he had the privilege of learning from industry luminaries such as the late Kathy Whittaker and the world-renowned Mike Ruiz. As Arthur aptly puts it, "A photographer is never done learning."
One of the standout aspects of Arthur's photography career is his unique perspective as a working actor himself. His dual expertise allows him to bridge the gap between a client's needs and the artistic vision of a headshot session. By combining his knowledge of the acting industry with his expertise in the art of the headshot, Arthur creates headshot packages that are not just stunning but also highly marketable.
Among his many experiences, one of Arthur's most cherished assignments was accompanying and photographing DeafWest's Broadway Production of Spring Awakening: The Musical at The White House in 2015. This momentous event reflects the diversity and impact of his work in the entertainment industry.

For over 15 years, Wenceslao has worked as an assistant to renowned artists, gaining invaluable experiences alongside names such as Wayne Healy, David Botello, Paul Botello, Judy Baca, and Ricardo Mendoza.
In addition to his collaborative endeavors, Wenceslao is the visionary founder of ArtBuilds, an Art & Design production company based in LA. With roots spanning Puerto Rico, Mexico, and New Mexico, Marisa's work explores the complex intersection of America's growing fascination with Latinx culture and her personal assimilation experience.
Marisa's remarkable poetry collection, "Selena Didn't Know Spanish Either," has garnered recognition as the winner of the prestigious 2021 Robert Phillips Chapbook Prize. Through her poetry, she embarks on a powerful journey to reconnect with her cultural identity, using the iconic Tejano pop star, Selena Quintanilla, as a catalyst for exploration.
Throughout the conversation, Marisa fearlessly confronts the challenges of growing up in an environment with limited access to her own culture. She shares the profound connection she feels to poetry and how it serves as a source of solace and inspiration, particularly through her admiration for Selena Quintanilla. Marisa's work delves into important themes such as assimilation, marginalization, appropriation, tokenizing, and fetishizing, offering a multi-generational memoir that shines a light on the experiences of Latinx families in predominantly white cultures.
Marisa's poetry is marked by its infusion of humor, lightness, and playfulness, allowing her to tackle difficult subjects with grace and resilience. In addition to her poetic endeavors, she is an ardent activist who co-founded "Protest Through Poetry," a collective of BIPOC activist poets. She also teaches writing and minority rhetorics at the University of Colorado-Boulder, empowering others to find their voices and advocate for change.
Marisa Tirado, a Puerto Rican, Mexican, and New Mexican poet who writes obsessively about the Southwest, her primas, and the complexities of America's new obsession with Latinx culture. She is the author of Selena Didn’t Know Spanish Either (Texas Review Press, 2022), winner of the 2021 Robert Phillips Chapbook Prize, and studied poetry and literary translation at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Latin culture has long been underrepresented in the home fragrance industry, lacking scents and fragrances that accurately reflect their culture. Bonita Fierce Candles aims to change that narrative by celebrating and elevating the cultural crossroads of being Latin@ and American.
Melissa's personal journey as a non-Spanish-speaking Latina navigating language, culture, and heritage has shaped her mission. Growing up, she faced isolation and disconnect with her culture, searching for resources and community where she could see herself mirrored. It was through an online community of Latinas that she finally found a sense of belonging and realized the importance of creating that feeling for others on similar journeys.

Growing up in Westchester County, NY in the 80s as one of the few Latinas in her neighborhood and schools, Denise struggled with reconciling her Puerto Rican and American identities. It wasn't until she moved to Miami after college that she realized her struggle was not hers alone. This realization sparked a passion in her to bring the concept of Enye (ñ) into the mainstream American consciousness.
Denise shares her experience of feeling isolated and alone before discovering the power of connection and belonging through sharing stories with other Enyes. She also discusses her vision of replicating this experience through sharing stories on film with a massive audience. Rafael Fernandez, Jr. is a Puerto Rican/Dominican Digital Creator, Host of the Latin Babbler Show, and the Founder of Wafi Media.
As a self-taught web designer, graphic designer, and social media manager his various skills helped in the development of websites for large corporations such as True Trading Group, Vivos, Lisc Bay Area, and more. His 20 years of experience in branding and design are at the forefront of what you see in the Wafi Media brand and its networks.
Having little to no experience as a host, Rafael led the way joined by members of his family and friends to start The Latin Babbler Show, a Top 2% globally recognized podcast which provides its audience with a multimedia experience each week spotlighting top celebrity and executive interviews, culture, the arts, food, and current events. In such a short time the show has amassed over 23,000 thousand audio downloads and 32,000 YouTube views.

Capítulo 054: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by visual artist and aztec dancer, Heriberto Luna. Listen in as we discuss how he developed his skills as an earth sculptor and painter and drawing inspiration from the universality of ancient knowledge & the mysteries of the universe.
Born in Mexico City in 1976, he immigrated to the United States a year after. Of 6 children, he is the second to the youngest. Heriberto Luna comes from a colorful background. His grandfather was one of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata’s soldiers, and his father was in the Mexican army. His grandmother was a Mayan shaman, fluent in two indigenous languages. Graduating from Franklin High School, in Los Angeles, Luna was surrounded by gangs but found his salvation at age 16 in the arts. At La Tierra de la Culebra, an urban art park in Northeast LA, he developed his skills as an earth sculptor and painter. Combined with his passion for performing Aztec dancing as both a dancer and a drummer, the artistic exposure gave him focus and strengthened his resolve to rise above the bad circumstances around him. During 2002 and 2005 Luna apprentice in major mural projects with L. A’s most influential muralist team the East Los Streetscapers, and artist Paul Botello. Luna met Los Angeles artist Margaret Garcia and in 2002 he apprenticed with her and with New Mexico Master artist Pola Lopez The result of all that hard work is clear, as Luna has exhibited over to 50 Museums thus far, among them such prestigious locations as: The Santa Monica Museum of Art, The National Mexican Fine Art Museum in Illinois and The Museum of History and Art in Ontario, California. Beyond that, Luna’s works have become part of major art collections at Arizona State University and in 2006 Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presented him with an award of recognition for his accomplishments in the arts; Luna has also been awarded two artist-in-residence grants from the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs department. As his art career continues to bloom, Luna remains dedicated to under privilege youths, he is currently teaching arts classes in the Juvenile Halls for Theatre of Hearts and serves as a mentor. Heriberto Luna’s success is measurable on many different levels yet what makes him most proud is seeing the young people that he has worked with turn to the community and become mentors themselves. Some have gone on to achieve gallery and museum showings as well. Withal, Luna’s bold colors juxtaposed with ancient inspiration and strong commitment to the future of his community bring a powerful and profound statement to the art world and beyond.

Chris ‘Tobar’ Rodriguez is a multi-talented multimedia artist and designer based in Austin, Texas. His striking digital illustrations are full of layered colors, patterns, and textures that draw the viewer in and demand attention. In addition to his digital work, Tobar's artwork can also be found on apparel such as shirts and masks.
Inspired by the connection between the mind and the soul, Tobar's artwork is a journey of self-discovery and hope. He uses symbols and vibrant colors to convey messages of courage and determination. In addition to his personal art projects, Tobar has also worked with clients such as Toyota, Red Bull, Lauryn Hill, and UT.
When he's not working on design projects or creating impactful experiences, Tobar can be found collaborating with _OFCOLOR on events like Latino Art WKND, "I FEEL LIKE KANYE: art show" ,Black Art WKND and more creative experiences. Capítulo 050: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by Writer/Director/ Producer and Performer, Josefina Lopez. Listen in as we discuss the journey of co-authoring the award winning film Real Women Have Curves, her experience as the founding Artistic Director of CASA 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights, and the world premier of "Remembering Boyle Heights"
Josefina López (Writer/Director/ Producer/Performer) is best known for authoring the play and co-authoring the 2002 SUNDANCE AWARD WINNING film Real Women Have Curves. Josefina started her writing career at 17 and has had over 100 productions of her many plays throughout the country. Josefina has been working as a professional screenwriter in Hollywood for almost 30 years with countless development deals and screenplay assignments. She has worked with many established Producers like Norman Lear (All In the Family) and Michael McDonald (American Crime) to bring Latinos to television. Born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in 1969, Josefina Lopez was five years old when she and her family migrated to the United States and settled in the East Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. Josefina was undocumented for thirteen years before she received Amnesty in 1987 and eventually became a U.S. Citizen in 1995. Josefina is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, has an MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA’s School of Film & Television, and has a "Diplome de Cuisine" from Le Cordon Bleu, Paris.
Josefina is the Founding Artistic Director of CASA 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights which is celebrating its 18th anniversary. At CASA 0101 her commitment is to present plays that celebrate and shatter the myths and stereotypes of Women and Latinos. She teaches playwriting and screenwriting to a new generation of Latino and women artists at CASA 0101.
Josefina is presently developing the musical version of Real Women Have Curves for
Broadway. Her first novel titled Hungry Woman in Paris came out in 2009. Her two play collections Real Women Have Curves & Other Plays and Detained in the Desert and Other Plays as well as her countless books can be found on Amazon. She wrote a play to protest SB1070 titled Detained in the Desert, which she produced as a film and which won best Feature at the Los Angeles International Women’s Film Festival. In 2013 she won BEST DIRECTOR for her short film 51/50 at the Ventura Museum Latina Film Festival. She is working on numerous writing projects for the stage, screen and for print including the TV version of Real Women Have Curves & Hungry Woman and a supernatural animation TV Series for Sony Studio.

Yumarie Morales, of Panamanian and Puerto Rican parentage, has always found herself at the intersection of American culture and traditional Latin American values. Being an "Army brat" afforded her the opportunity to live and travel around the globe, collecting experiences for what would turn out to be her true creative expression, performing. A graduate from the University of Northern Colorado, she promised her Mom she would secure a backup plan; so while double majoring in Theatre and Spanish Literature, she also minored in communication. Presently, Yumarie lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, and can be spotted frequently during the commercial break. While commercial work has been a privilege, she hopes that the connections she's made in TV and film, continue to provide a path to perform for larger audiences while demonstrating a key message, Representation Matters.

Ever since his move to Philadelphia 10 years ago, Mr. Casanova has been curating artist all across America and even overseas, bringing them in from Canada, South America and Europe. He has been a helping hand in several independent record labels based out of Philadelphia as well as in his hometown of Miami Beach.
Federico has also participated in several touring bands and traveled with his music seeing first hand how the production of vinyl seriously needs to make its way into Philadelphia and into the hands of independent artists.

Tamia B. Santana is an advocate for dance and the arts. Previously she was Executive Director of the Brooklyn Dance Festival, owner of Jete Dance Center, Resident Dance Director of the Brooklyn Museum, Co-Founder and Executive Producer of the Tap Family Reunion Festival, and producer and Steering committee member of the televised Bessie’s New York Dance and Performance Awards. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Santana now raises her own family there. She serves on the Board of Directors for One Brooklyn to the Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams, and READ 718. As a prominent concert dance and performance producer, Santana has executive produced and directed concerts and events at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Alvin Ailey Theater, Summer Stage, and The Schomburg Center Barclay’s Center, as well as for music artists such as Big Daddy Kane, Thomas Piper, and more. Her previous experience as a dancer has been performing at Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, and Europe.
For fifty years Ballet Hispánico has been the leading voice intersecting artistic excellence and advocacy, and is now the largest Latinx cultural organization in the United States and one of America’s Cultural Treasures. Capítulo 045: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by Singer-songwriter, pianist, and producer Chris Urquiaga, known as JChris. Listen in as we discuss his performance experiences, different art styles to his music, and his support for the LGBTQ+ community along with his own drag persona, Cara Linda.
Singer-songwriter, pianist, and producer Chris Urquiaga, known as JChris, is lauded for his exciting performance energy and smooth voice. Hailed as “…the next big thing” by Metro Weekly magazine, this Latin pop virtuoso is internationally recognized for his pop compositions which are laced with Latin, Afro and Brazilian influences. His music explores themes of gender fluidity and queer culture.
Chris started playing piano at the age of 7 and started playing at churches at the age of 9. During Chris’ childhood years, his performance experiences as a soloist and with choral and instrumental ensembles brewed an interest in composition. Throughout high school and college, Chris developed a desire to tell his own story through his own music. After studying composition at the Eastman School of Music, Chris became highly active as a singer-songwriter, releasing indie pop albums under the stage name Chris Urquiaga. Chris’ desire to deepen his connection with and express his Brazilian, Peruvian and gay identity, led him a new direction. In 2020, Chris rebranded himself as an urban Latin artist under the stage name JChris. As JChris, he has already seen great success with the release of his singles. His 2021 single, Caliente (featuring major Latin artist Naldo Benny), has reached over 1 million views on YouTube. Chris’ Spotify channel has over 500,000 streams.
Chris has co-arranged and co-produced with JohnnyTechAudio for his new sound as JChris. As a team, they have received critical acclaim for their high-quality and edgy urban tracks. Chris has worked with an international team of professionals including chart-topping superstar Naldo Benny for JChris’ “Caliente” music video, and Yurel Echezarreta from the movie West Side Story (Remake) for JChris’ upcoming LGBT-centered music videos Oportunidad and Dime. A vocal a cappella version of JChris’ Macarena has been made by arranger/composer Tom Anderson, whose arrangements have been featured on NBC’s “The Sing Off”. The vocal a cappella version of Macarena written by Anderson is planned to be recorded and released in 2023. Chris has also shared the stage with Stokley Williams of the band Mint Condition.

Capítulo 044: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by interdisciplinary artist, activist, and curator, Savanah Pennell. Listen in as we discuss the intersection of Art & Activism, storytelling as a tool for creating change, and exploring new ways of communicating through Art.
Savanah Pennell is an artist, activist, and curator from Gilbert, Arizona. She is currently based in New York City and is working on a series of projects revolving around borders, identity, and memory. Savanah received her BA in Art History from Arizona State University in December of 2016, and her MA in Arts Politics from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2019. She has recently shown artwork at the Fringe Art Bath Festival in Bath, UK, and has showcased her co-created video installation and conversation based event From Palestine to Mexico: Fronteras, Hudud, Borders at the Bowery Poetry Club. In 2019 Savanah was awarded the Tisch Initiative for Creative Research Grant to attend the Sharjah Biennial 14 and to investigate the role of socially engaged art in the biennial setting. She has also recently launched her co-curated online collection of artists Insert Woman Here. This collection is an ongoing database of female artists who work within the theme of unseen labor. Savanah has worked in various capacities for such institutions as the ASU Art Museum, the Museum of Walking, and Pen + Brush. She has also been an art educator, working as an afterschool art instructor for Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. As an activist, Savanah has worked with such organizations as Amnesty International USA as an organizer of student chapters and coordinator of events revolving around campaigns to end human rights abuses.

Naibe Reynoso is a Mexican-American Multi-Emmy award-winning journalist based in Los Angeles California. She is also a speaker and author. She has worked and contributed to various regional, national and international networks including KTLA, France 24, Univision Network, Reelz Channel, CNN en Español, the Biography Channel, Fox News Latino, Larry King's ORA TV, and has even filled in as a co-host on ABC's "The View". She also co-created "The TRENDTalk," a one-hour talk show and co-founded the events company Latinafest LLC which has produced over a dozen successful events in the Los Angeles Area. In 2018 she created Con Todo Press, a publishing company that creates books to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities. Her first children's book, “Be Bold, Be Brave: 11 Latinas who made U.S. History,” was an Amazon #1 best seller, and highlights 11 women who excelled in medicine, science, sports, the arts, journalism and politics.
Bel Hernandez Castillo is the Founder/CEO of Latin Heat Media, a multi-media company that includes a news and entertainment website (www.latinheat.com); TheTRENDTalk TV show which currently airs on the local L.A. MeTV station, Facebook Watch, IGTV and YouTube; and is co-founder of LATINAFest an outdoor festival that celebrates everything Latina with vendors, food and activations and a focus on LATINAPreneurs. She was dubbed as “The Godmother of Latino Hollywood” by Moviemaker Magazine for her work in helping expand the presence of Latino filmmakers in the ’90s, which she continues to do to this date. Hernandez Castillo served for six years on the prestigious Peabody Awards Board, which honors excellence in TV, film, and online content. She currently serves as the Chair of the Farmworker Justice Advisory Council. She also serves on the advisory board of the Mexican American Cultural Education Foundation.

Born in Los Angeles, and based in New York city, Luis Martin began his journey in the art museums of LA where he worked as a teen. Moving to NYC at the age of 19, he continued to work at cultural institutions before attending art school.
His artistic career flourished through self-initiated projects that aimed to create visibility and access to his art practice and that of other artists. He has exhibited nationally and internally around the world. Most recently in Merida, Mexico where he had a solo show of collages created during his stay.
"Collage is my vehicle to explore and understand the world around me from a place of power, curiosity, and agency. Unlike any other art form, collage is a democratic practice with low risks and high rewards. It allows me to make connections between the visual language of popular culture and historical context to arrive at my truth, without the weight of an imposed narrative. As an artist I get to write my own story in my own syntax as the protagonist. "

Michelle Manzanales is a choreographer, dedicated dance educator of 30 years, and co-founder of the Latinx Dance Educators Alliance. The Director of Ballet Hispánico’s School of Dance since December of 2016, Michelle previously led the organization’s professional company as Rehearsal Director & Artistic Associate for seven seasons. Ms. Manzanales is committed to creating an environment where all students are inspired to explore movement, feel supported in their individual dance journeys, and draw meaningful connections between dance and their lives.
Manzanales has co-presented at the New York State Dance Educators Association, ARTs + Change, and the National Dance Education Organization conferences, “Questioning TODO: A Latinx Inquiry of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy”, a direct response to the historical and continued exclusion of Latinx contributions and experiences in the dance field. A current faculty member of the Ballet Hispánico School of Dance, she has also served on the faculties of the University of Houston, Rice University, Lou Conte Dance Studio (former Home of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), and the Houston Metropolitan Dance Center. She has been a guest artist for the Professional Work Sessions at STEPS on Broadway, the Joyce Master Class Series at Gibney, the Taylor School, New Orleans Ballet Association, the Puerto Rico Classical Dance Competition, Generation Dance Festival Houston, Artisan Ballet Company, Regional Dance America, Festival de Danza Cordoba-Youth America Grand Prix, Houston’s Kinder High School for the Performing & Visual Arts, along with numerous other dance studios, schools, and college dance programs nationwide and internationally.

"Francisco Martins, aka Cuckoo Martins is an brazilian illustrator, tattoo artist, designer and photographer. Born in the 80s, in Rio de Janeiro, came from a family of strong and artistic women, which he is pretty proud of.
Started to draw and paint as a child by the influence of his grandmother, who was a classic painting teacher in the arts university of Rio, became a photographer at an early age when quit university to work at a publicity and design agency. From there, became art director in some major companies, where did some work for well known brands.
By 2016 decided to quit everything to start tattooing and later to create Poca Madre!, an illustration and design studio focused on creative solutions.
It's a strong advocate that women should have space in society, art and leading jobs, and everywhere they want.
Believes that brazilians are not seen as latinxs for the whole majority of the latin american countries , but wants to connect and help other brazilians to feel proud to be latinx."

Listen in as we discuss reimagining Latin history on stage and creating the Sandra Delgado Experience: "A big band music spectacular with a lil bit of dancing, a lil bit of storytelling and a whole lot of joy."
Sandra Delgado is a Colombian-American writer, actor, singer and producer born and raised in Chicago. She is best known for her play La Havana Madrid, which enjoyed sold-out runs at Steppenwolf and Goodman Theatre, and most recently in a co-production with Teatro Vista and Collaboraction. It was featured in the New York Times and CNN, received recognition as one of the best plays of 2017 by New City Chicago and Time Out Chicago, the Time-Out Audience Award for Best New Work, and the Alliance of Latinx Theatre Artists (ALTA) Award for Best Production.
Sandra is also a respected veteran of the stage, with a career spanning two decades. In addition to her work at artistic homes, Teatro Vista and Collaboraction, she has been seen on stages across Chicago including The Goodman Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre, Victory Gardens and About Face. Recent highlights include the titular role in La Havana Madrid, La Ruta at Steppenwolf and starring off-Broadway in the Public Theatre’s production of Oedipus el Rey as Jocasta.
Sandra is a 2021 United States Artists Fellow, serves on the board of the Chicago Public Library, served on the City of Chicago’s Cultural Advisory Council (2019-2021) and is a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists. She is an Illinois Arts Council Fellow in Literature, a recipient of the 3Arts Award, the Joyce Award, The Theater Communications Group (TCG) Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship in the Extraordinary Potential Category, a three-time Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events grantee, and a 3Arts 3AP Project Grantee, and received the 2017 Latina Professional of the Year Award from the Chicago Latino Network. Ms. Delgado is Goodman's Playwrights Unit and a TCG Young Leader of Color Alum. She is one of the twenty women of Chicago arts and culture honored in Kerry James Marshall's mural RUSH MORE on the facade of the Chicago Cultural Center.
Her latest project, The Sandra Delgado Experience, a fusion of music and storytelling will premiere this spring.

She has also worked with Pregones/PRTT and R.Evolucion Latina on a production of The Tempest directed by Luis Salgado.
Her indie film, “Millie and the Lords” won her the Best Film and Best Actress Award at The People’s Film Festival and the Viva Latino Film Festival as well as an Award for Film Excellence from the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival. It was also featured at the Georgia Latino Film Festival, Philadelphia Latino Film Festival, Rochester Latino Film Festival and was most recently on HBO Latino and COMCAST. Her original play “Elvira-The Immigration Play” was nominated for Best Play at the 2019 Strawberry One Act Theater Festival and featured at the 2015 NYC Fringe Festival. Capítulo 032: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by Professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and writer Marcela Gómez Lugo. Listen in as we discuss the Cuban ballet method, creating culturally relevant pieces, and reimagining the future of ballet classics.
Marcela Gómez Lugo, dancer, teacher, writer, and translator, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She began her pre-professional training as a ballet dancer at the age of fourteen at Andanza School of Dance. Marcela continued to refine her dance training by attending summer intensives such as American Ballet Theatre, Bossov Ballet Theatre and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. In 2019, she graduated, with the highest academic honors, from Mercyhurst University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance: minors in Dance Pedagogy and Psychology. After moving to St Louis, MO, Marcela danced professionally with The Big Muddy Dance Company Trainee Program (2019-2020) and obtained a certification in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) Currently, Marcela is a company member with Ballet314 where she performs classical and contemporary works such as The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Ragtime: The American Experience, among others. She choreographs for local festivals, dance competitions, as well as teaches and coaches for several dance studios/programs in the St Louis area. Additionally, she has a certification in The Cuban Ballet Methodology.Marcela’s passion for the performing arts, education, and linguistics led her to design dance curriculum's as well as translate various literary texts and entire websites. In 2021, she published her first poetry book “Leaves/Hojas” with Editorial Isla Negra.

Listen in as we discuss her deep passion and love for music, being a self-taught singer, and building a musical career from the ground up.
Carolina Rial is an 18-year-old singer, songwriter, musician, actress, dancer and model based in New Jersey. Carolina rose to national attention this past year as a contestant on season 20 of NBC's hit singing TV show, The Voice. Her blind audition of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" was viewed by over 1.2 million people on YouTube, and 15 million across all other social media platforms. Carolina is also a first-generation American with a father from Spain and a mother from Bolivia. Sadly, her father passed away when she was just three years old, but her grandmother helped raise her and her siblings.
With constant motivation to make her angels and culture proud, the 18 year-old has landed several gigs and bookings at popular venues such as Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, MetLife Stadium, Radio City Music Hall, NJPAC, Citi Field, Barclays Center, Prudential Center, and more. She’s also been active in the musical theater world and has been in several off broadway productions. Carolina has been featured on other television channels such as PBS, CBS, Fox Sports, ESPN, Univision, and NBC New York and has posted herself on social media since she was 13 years old, gaining significant attention from stars like Jennifer Hudson, Shoshana Bean, and Faouiza. Her videos have been reposted on several different accounts, gaining over 2 million views. Carolina is driven to share her voice and talent with the world.

Capítulo 029: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by Teatro Vista's Co-Artistic Directors Wendy Mateo and Lorena Diaz. Listen in as we discuss pushing the boundaries of digital theatre, creating a safe space for artists to explore, and a sisterhood that has lasted over two decades.
Teatro Vista, Theatre With A View is firmly committed to sharing and celebrating the riches of Latino culture with all Chicago theatre audiences. This commitment stems from the belief that there are as may similarities as there are differences, and that perhaps the answer to breaking down the walls of prejudice and stereotypes lies in understanding these differences. Ultimately, it is through this "view" that Teatro Vista intends to bridge the gap between Latino and non-Latino cultures in Chicago.
Diaz and Mateo are a “multihyphenated jefa” comedy duo who have enjoyed their creative partnership for more than 20 years. They co-founded (with six other partners) their own content creation studio, Chicago4Real, and co-host their livestream show Bochinche at Nite on the studio's Twitch channel. They have co-written and directed several films including Good Mothers (official selection of HBO NY Latino Film Festival and the Chicago Latino Film Festival), Sunset 1919, written by J. Nicole Brooks in collaboration with Lookingglass Theatre, and Identified, produced by Full Spectrum Features. As Dominizuelan, they performed nationally for years and pursued several independent projects, including co-writing and starring in the comedy web-series Dominizuelan Consulate, created in collaboration with Fred Armisen, producer/director Alice Mathias and Mas Mejor Productions.
Diaz (she/her/hers), a “Made in Chicago” hybrid of Peruvian Indigenous descent and American Latino swagger, has bounced between Chicago’s theater and comedy scenes for 15 years. She is familiar to Teatro Vista audiences for portraying Carolina in the company’s acclaimed 2018 world premiere The Madres by Stephanie Alison Walker. She subsequently co-directed Teatro Vista’s 2019 premiere of Walker’s sequel, The Abuelas. Her many other collaborations include work with Jo Cattell and Steppenwolf 1700 (Tumbao, a live radio play), iO Chicago (People in the City), Mike Oquendo Productions, Goodman, Playground Theatre and The Second City. She is most commonly known for her work over six seasons as the snarky Nurse Doris on Dick Wolf's Chicago Med, Fire and PD franchise.
Mateo (she/her/hers) is a Chicago-based comedian, actor, writer, director and filmmaker. Mateo has been seen throughout the city's stages including Lookingglass Theatre, where she is an artistic associate, Steppenwolf 1700 and Playground Theater. Her directing credits include the 2018 play Not for Sale 2.0 by Guadalis del Carmen at UrbanTheater Company. On TV she performs in shows like NBC's Chicago PD, as guest star Chicago Med, and as “Ronnie” in the forthcoming Station Eleven on HBO. Aside from her focus on expanding representation in media, Mateo is also an equity, diversity, and inclusion consultant and facilitator with the Nova Collective and her own consulting company, Ina Consulting.

Gerard Flores is a bilingual singer and actor from Buenos Aires, Argentina currently living and working in Los Angeles.
After a successful TV and music career in Argentina, Gerard came to the US to take his career to new heights. With a vision of bringing world-class performance to Latin pop music, Gerard set out on the creation of his debut EP. Gerard’s music is inspired by the performance caliber of JLo, the sex symbol status of Ricky Martin and the dance moves of Chayanne. Gerard’s music has a distinct and fresh sound bringing together influences of pop, flamenco and reggaeton in a modern way that connects across cultural lines.
Gerard’s mission is to use music to empower people to be radically authentic regardless of religion, race, sex, sexual orientation or image. Being the victim of bullying as a kid, Gerard experienced the isolation of being different. It was music that shifted Gerard’s mindset from seeing his differences as a liability to seeing his uniqueness as power. Today, Gerard’s music aims to inspire people to celebrate their differences and claim their unique power.
In his first EP as a solo artist, Gerard has partnered with the multi-Grammy nominated and Latin Grammy winner Trevor Muzzy who has produced JLo, Lady Gaga, Alejandro Sanz, Pablo Alborán and RedOne. Gerard co-wrote the songs with Aleena Gibson a Swedish songwriter who is known for working with Jason Derulo, Nick Carter, Chenoa, and David Bisbal.
In Argentina, Gerard had a successful career across television, theater and music. Gerard was a daily cast member of the highest rated TV show in Argentina, Susana Gimenez, recording 300 episodes over the span of multiple years. Prior to Susana Gimenez, Gerard toured throughout Latin America as part of the musical Lucia la Maga directed by the celebrated singer Valeria Lynch. After Lucia la Maga Gerard went on to star in six separate musicals each touring through South America.
In the US, Gerard has been cast in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, Harbinger: The Movie, My Secret Lake and multiple international commercials. Gerard has also written and produced a Web Series called Just Living:The Series, which can be found on Amazon Prime.

Born in Bogota Colombia (South America), Beatriz studied with Internationally world known teachers and at The Joffrey Ballet School in NY. She has danced with Ballet 2000, The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, Green Stage Alliance/Stage of the Arts, Casa 0101, Central Avenue Dance Ensemble, Pacific Standard Time, Comfort Disturb Troupe, Mojacar Flamenco Dance Company, and Los Angeles Fusion Dance Theatre. Beatriz has worked as a model for Visual Artists: Tiger Munson, Eva Montealegre, and Petra Eiko. Beatriz also dances for world famous Tap dancer Chester Whitmore with whom she has toured and performed at the Musical International Museum in Arizona, The Ford Theatre, and Los Angeles Metro.
Beatriz is the founder and director of 3-19 Dance Art (Where Magical Realism meets Dance). Her works have been performed at some of Los Angeles most prestigious venues, UCLA, USC, California Plaza, Bach in the Subways/ Union Station, Highways Performance Art Space, Los Angeles Theatre Center, Pico Rivera Sports Arena, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Los Angeles Festival of Books.
Beatriz has worked as choreographer for The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, Teatro Akabal, Casa 0101, The Watts Village Theatre Company, Macha Theatre, Cabaret Tango, Guadalupe Radio’s production of Cristo Vive 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 directed by award winner theatre director Denise Blasor, and most recently as choreographer and dancer for the stunning production of “I am Frida Kahlo” Created and directed by Froylan Cabuto.
Beatriz has also choreographed for music videos with artists such as Archer Black, Arnold G, JD Mata and Leopold Nunan.
In 2019 her acclaimed full length production of “Bewitched Writing”based on the life of World renown writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez had its sold out premiere at the Wille Agee Playhouse in Inglewood CA for 6 consecutive performances.
In 2020 Beatriz was chosen by the Los Angeles Public Library to portray Dolores Del Rio in their exhibition “Historical Portraits of Los Angeles History” and later that same year she was a featured artist in Artists of Los Angeles in “Look What SHE did” a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the mission to inspire women and girls to greatness by bringing to light stories of remarkable women who changed the world.
Beatriz is the recipient of 2 awards, and 2 recognitions from the City of Los Angeles. The International GVII Award for promoting the classical arts in the Latin communities of Los Angeles and The excellence award by Festival De La Calle 8.
Her most recent works as choreographer and dancer can be seen in the music videos Lo Teniamos Todo and Te Vas a Acordar by the great singer/song writer Poetender. And in the short Film Two Dancers One Love which is in postproduction and will be released towards the end of 2022.
Beatriz is passionate about sharing her love for dance and the arts with kids and seniors in her community, she is proud to say she is an instructor for the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation.

Capítulo 022: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by writer, director, editor, and graphic designer Chris Banda. Listen in as we discuss the process of character building, sharing authentic stories, and healing through writing.
Raised in West Covina, California. Chris was always interested in art and enrolled at Mt. Sierra college to become a graphic designer. Though his abilities in graphic design, he created several layout and film posters. https://bandabear71.wixsite.com/chrisbanda
But film was always his ultimate goal.
Feeling as though there were not enough Latino stage plays that represented what he wanted to work on as an actor, he began his writing career simply out of necessity. He enrolled at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California, where he wrote several plays, including The Long Walk, dAWGS, The Hand of Handsome Eddie, and Playing Clean which was performed for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival New Works program. His first professional production was an extended adaptation of his play dAWGS which was produced by L.A. Teatro produced and performed at The Ivar Theater and Gardner Stage in Hollywood, and the prestigious Los Angeles Theater Center.
In 2010, Chris enrolled at the Los Angeles Film School and quickly became recognized for his writing and editing skills in his short films Working: A Jazz Musician and Suerté (https://youtu.be/IU4vDCYUFXI). In 2021, for his thesis film, he adapted his one-act play Playing Clean into a Short Film (https://youtu.be/075ZEjqmgnk) which received high acclaimed for writing and editing. After graduating he began to work as a writer and editor working on several short films, features and web series including the award winning web series Encounters were he wrote two episodes, Adobo, (https://youtu.be/WwYkVECoGo0) and award winning The Moment Between the Lights, (https://youtu.be/T3tnszGeouM) which he also directed.
In 2015, he began working as a fulltime editor editing content for Machinima and Fullscreen Media. It was during this time be began working as the primary editor for Emmy award-winning director Kico Velarde and his docu-series Lowrider Magazine’s Lowrider Roll Models. The play tells the story of a young Mexican-American woman working as a mechanic in her families Auto shop. The play surrounds her returning home after the sudden death of her father. She must confront the memories of her father, the choice between her education or the loss of the family business, and a cultural identity that makes her feel as though she doesn't belong.
The play was invited to be part of the El Centro del Sur Latinx Theater Festival. Because of Covid restrictions, the play was filmed to be presented virtually. The producers were so
pleased with the final version, it is now making it way in the film festival circuit winning several awards, including Best Stage Play and Best Acting Ensemble.
Chris is currently working as a digital video editor creating content Tennis Channel and NBC Peacock.
He continues to write and recently finished adapting two of his stage plays, The Hand of Handsome Eddie and Dawgs, into feature films. He’s also began writing a semi- autobiographical play about a family in crisis after Covid 19.

SALOMÉ EGAS is an Ecuadorian mestiza performer, educator and entrepreneur who is permanently questioning her identity through dance, theater, film and textile arts. As a solo performer and a member of The New Latinx Art Collective, Salomé incorporates radical self-love and indigenization as tools to empower the ancestral knowledge carried by femme bodies of color. Her solo “Reflejo'' has been supported by The Greenwich Arts Council (2021), The Immigrant Artists Biennial (2021) and the Exponential Festival (2020); her solo “(Up)rooted” was commissioned by Skidmore College’s Tang Museum (2019). She’s performed nationally at Abrons Arts Center, LaMama, Dixon Place, NYTW, Joe’s Pub, among others. Internationally, Salomé has performed in Ecuador, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina and Canada. She participated in 2019-20 Creative Capital’s Latinx Artist Workshop and EmergeNYC (2018).
As an arts educator, Salome has taught and created curriculums in Dance, Theater and Spanish for different public and private institutions in NYC and Ecuador. Salomé recently started dabbling in Bilingual Children’s Literacy and is happy to release her first children’s book in March 2022! She is also the founder of “BY SALO,” an online brand that focuses on making sustainable clothing and accessories through recycled, upcycled and/or hand-sewn, hand-dyed materials.
Salomé obtained a Master’s in Performance, International Education and Mythologies from NYU (2018), and a Dance-Theater degree from Skidmore College (2014).

Since the New Millennium, Touring the Globe On Stage & Off Playing His Guitar, The First American Born in an Ecuadorian Immigrant Family, Raised On Equal Parts: La Bamba/Ninja Turtles/Superman, Viteri has recently become known as the “Spear-Head” of the local Art & Music Cafe (@thepharmacycoffee) in His Local Community of Point Breeze.
After a Cycling Accident in 2009, Viteri was taken away from International Touring. Forced to ReInvent Himself after the 2008 Economic Collapse; Using his knowledge & experience, Viteri purchased, renovated & repurposed an old Pharmacy in his neighborhood. Since then, The Pharmacy, Gary & Sharky (a Pitbull he rescued from his block) have become the “Anchor” of the neighborhood (according to Google)
After nearly a decade after his accident & over 1000+ Events, The Pharmacy was forced to cancel their 2020 schedule & closed for renovations. After some much needed maintenance & upgrades, Gary reopened the cafe in 2022 w/ Live Music from the Rooftop, returning to his roots, celebrating a decade of business w/ the 1st Annual @LatinPunkFest debuting his latest project @qlebrasmusic uniting the New & Old Generation of LatinxAmericans in Philadelphia.
Currently, Viteri shares his studies in Andean & Kichwa Culture through his Art & Music Production, using his platform to spread awareness & information regarding Native & Indigenous Language & Ancestry by curating/creating open source content for All Ages.

Michelle's credits include the Tony Award nominated Broadway productions of Paul Simon and Derek Walcott's The Capeman, The Sound of Music (starring
Richard Chamberlain), and Man of La Mancha (starring Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell). She also performed the coveted role of “Abuela Claudia” opposite Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Lin Manuel Miranda in In the Heights and originated the role of “Maria Elena” in the opera Missionaries written and directed by the late Elizabeth Swados, which premiered at both La MaMa, ETC. and New York Stage and Film. A classically trained vocalist, Ms. Rios was also a Metropolitan Opera Mid Atlantic Semi-finalist, and has collaborated with artists on theatrical, classical, and contemporary new works. She was a guest artist in Spoleto Music Festivals in both Italy and Charleston, SC, where she performed the world premiere of Magic & Transformation, a chamber orchestral piece with lyrics by the late Lou Reed and music by contemporary composer Peter Gordon.
Other guest artist concert appearances include: The Washington Opera, The National Symphony, The Greenville Symphony, The Arlington Symphony, The Pan American Symphony Orchestra, The Core Ensemble, Opera Maxlrain (Germany), The “In” Series, etc. Ms. Rios has performed and collaborated with such luminaries as Paul Simon, Lin Manuel Miranda, Marc Anthony, Ruben Blades, Uzo Aduba, Lila Downs, and Academy Award nominees Ed Harris, Mare Winningham, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, to name a few. She performed the role of "Signora Nacarelli" in the World Premiere of the first chamber production of The Light in the Piazza by Tony Award winning composer Adam Guettel. She also originated the role of “Lupe” in the World Premiere of Tony Award nominees Michael John LaChiusa and Sybille Pearson's Giant directed by award winning Broadway and West End director and choreographer Jonathan Butterell ("Everybody's Talking About Jamie"). She performed alongside Grammy Award winning recording artist Lila Downs as “Mama Elena” in the Sundance Theatre Lab workshop presentation of Like Water for Chocolate with music and lyrics by Lila Downs and a book by Pulitzer Prize Award winning playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes. Ms. Rios received a 2018 Helen Hayes Award nomination for her performance as "Abuela Claudia" in the U.S. Spanish premiere of In the Heights directed and choreographed by Luis Salgado with original Spanish lyrics by Lin Manuel Miranda.

"I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, grew up in the New York metropolitan area. I obtained my MFA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 1997. My work has been exhibited, in museums and galleries, nationally and internationally, including China, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Budapest, Latin America and major US cities. In my artwork, I use art forms such as drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, beading, sewing, and fire.
My work explores the politics of identity, addressing issues of colonization, diaspora, history, gender, spirituality, and religion. As a contemporary Afro- Latino/Latinx artist, I’ve created personal artistic vernacular by recycling elements of Yoruba and Santeria aesthetics. I describe my work as Art that is political, erotic, mystical, decorative, and elaborate that brings to mind Magic Realism, Caribbean travel posters, religious icons, and Latin album cover art. I'd say, there's lots of bling in my work. My relationship to my use of Color is not passive, I don’t shy away from it. My use of Color is a form of resistance - it’s intentional - it’s a political statement- it’s a language. I create fanciful constellations of marvelous glittery, unmistakably black, and emphatically brown figures in environments that take the viewer on journeys of material, psychological, and sociopolitical transformation. I celebrate the visual texture of my Afro-Descendant culture, affirming that Latino identity is a means of empowerment (be it social, spiritual, political, or personal). These images are in a sense icons or doorways to the sacred. When you look at an icon, it is meant to make you aware that you are in the presence of someone sacred. "

She has performed across California theaters such as The Chance Theater, The Hyperion Theater at DCA, Pirates Dinner Adventure, The Landis PAC, DOMA Theater, The Wallis Annenberg, Rockwell Table and Stage, Comedy Central Stage at The Hudson and Dodgers Stadium. Nohely made her New York debut honoring Chita Rivera at Carnegie Hall and is a regular in the Greenroom 42 Sings Series. A voice student under the direction of the late Marni Nixon (West Side Story, King & I, My Fair Lady) has landed her a career in lots of behind the scenes work for new films and musicals. Most recently she was part of the 2020 CBS Sketch Comedy Showcase Cast. You can catch her in an NCIS cold open (Season 19) and soon on a new season of a popular Netflix show.

"Maltas Con Leche is a family of artist established since 2012. Maltas consists of nine members and growing. As a family we have participated in workshops teaching art, demonstrations at events and taken on small and large murals .. We have painted murals in Colombia , and a few cities in the US. In Brooklyn NY, Bethelhem, PA , Allentown PA as well as Greenville SC. We have partnered with local community organizations like Hala and Champion Center out of the Lehigh Valley. Born in NY and raised in Queens during the 80’s and 90’s my goal is to support , teach and mentor and encourage our youth to create, love and share openly learned skills. As a Pratt graduate and 18 years of management I teach and approach every job as an opportunity to learn. All members regardless of age are given a place at the table from the begin to the end of the project. The outcome results in a collaboration between different perspectives and approach due to generational perspectives. My job is more like that of a conductor to an orchestra, helping others present their vision."

"At the age of six, I got superpowers. That’s what I thought at the time. I had the ability to pick up a #2 Ticonderoga pencil and create worlds. I could create great kingdoms, giant monsters, and badass heroines who saved the day. I had the power to create. This superpower has evolved many times through the course of my life and morphed into something different, the NEED to create. The annoying itch that can’t be scratched with anything other than storytelling, trust me...I’ve tried.
I created Meteor City in a desperate attempt to get a story out of my mind. A story that was consuming all of my waking thoughts and my dreams sometimes too. A story of afrolatina woman who tries desperately to understand and recognize the world and her community around her. Through this journey, I found my passion for audio storytelling and there is no turning back."

process-oriented creation, fatherhood, and transforming everyday items into complex, layered compositions.
"My work comes from the truth to show people of all shades of black, from all corners of the world, their beauty by reflecting back their own images and environments."
Dionis Ortiz is a multimedia artist, community art producer, and educator who works in printmaking, collage, and sculpture. Drawing from his experiences as a child born and raised in Harlem of Dominican descent, he creates geometric, process-based works from ill-regarded and found materials to celebrate the people of the African diaspora.
He was a participant in the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) Program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, received a Rema Hort Mann Artist Community Engagement Grant, and has been an Artist in Residence at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. He has produced several solo exhibitions in New York and his work was recently included in Estamos bien: La Trienal 20/21 at El Museo Del Barrio (New York).
Community engagement is central to his practice and he has produced projects for Harlem River Park Fund, Museum of Art and Design, and ImageNation.
This year, he is in residence at Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling and his mural design was selected by PubliColor for an elementary school in East Harlem. His work has been featured in The New York Times several times and is included in Latinx Art: Artists, Market, and Politics by Arlene Dávila.

Listen in as we discuss fashion, creativity, her collection at New York’s Full Figured Fashion Week, and the importance of prioritizing mental health.
Ashley’s passion for fashion started at a very young age where she learned to sew on her grandmother’s sewing machine when she was just seven years old, and only continued to grow her talents from there. Tipton went on to attend Fashion Careers College where she got her AA in Fashion Design and Technology. Her senior collection at Fashion Careers College was highlighted in the annual Golden Hanger Fashion Awards. She’s also showed her collection at New York’s Full Figured Fashion Week in 2012.
After entering and winning Project Runway in 2015 Ashley signed a contract with clothing retail giant JC Penny to design and be the face of their “plus-size” Boutique +
She has also designed Plus Sized patterns for Simplicity and her own jewelry line for K&M Accessories. Gifted in understanding the needs of the plus-size consumer Ashley released her first line of apparel and eyewear in November of 2017 and continues to work as a design consultant for other plus size establishments.

Angela has performed and debuted her creative writing and music Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway for the Vineyard Theatre, Dixon Place, TADA Youth Theatre and the Five Angels Theatre. As a writer, she has been commissioned to write and perform her original writing for the National Abortion Campaign in Colombia, the Nobel Women’s Initiative and for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She is a proud alum and former moderator of the BIPOC Critics Lab of Jose Solis hosted by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her artistic administration experience includes: Broadway and Off-Broadway work as a Production Fellow for The Public Theater, Artistic Operations Fellow at Girl Be Heard, and as a Production Management Intern for Manhattan Theatre Club. In Colombia, she was a Production Management Fellow for Teatro R101, an affiliate of the National Theatre of Colombia.

Listen in as we have a soulful discussion on writing, gang life in early years, and his cultural contributions to the world.
Luis J. Rodriguez has been a champion for the arts since he escaped gang life and drug addiction in his teens by painting murals, social justice activism, and writing. He's co-founder with his wife Trini of Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore, a comprehensive arts and literacy education and presentation nonprofit, based in the Northeast San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, now in its 20th year. He is founding editor of Tia Chucha Press, which publishes cross-cultural voices in poetry. He is also the author of 16 multi-genre books, including the best-selling memoir "Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A." For 40 years, he's done creative writing workshops, readings, and lectures in prisons, juvenile lockups, jails, schools, colleges, universities, libraries, bookstores, and conferences around the U.S, Europe, Latin America, and Japan. From 2014 to 2016, he served as Los Angeles' official Poet Laureate.
