The Unfundied Podcast reevaluates religion as a pillar of support for humans. During the past several years, our world has experienced periods of hardship and a evident shift away from institutionalized religion has occurred. What’s driving this shift away from religion? We will tackle this question in a three part show hosted by LMU student journalists and uncover the stories of those at the forefront of the movement. Tune in Wednesdays at 7:30pm to get “unfundied”.
This episode of Unfundied is centered around atheism and the questioning of life's meaning absent of religious beliefs. Atheism is a growing norm in the Western world and a religious identity many Gen Z's claim in today's society.
The shift away from organized religions was addressed in Episode 1, spiritual practices were explored in Episode 2, and for this final episode, our goal was to understand how people find meaning without religion. We interviewed LMU senior's—Jack Balta, Gracie Piantek, and Theo Hargis—all of whom identify as atheist. We investigate the role atheism plays in each of our interviewees day-to-day lives, while creating a dialogue in the hopes of fostering future conversation. This episode of Unfundied is centered around spiritual beliefs and practices. Spirituality has become a trending topic in today's society. Many find appeal in its loose structure and absence of rigid institution. Others, however, deem it to be illusory and criticize its legitimacy as objects such as tarot cards and crystals are revered.
The shift away from organized religions was addressed in Episode 1 and for this Episode 2 our goal was to seek understanding of how people find solace in spirituality. Jack interviewed Lauren Byrnes, Bo McGinn, and Cathrine Kennedy, all of whom partake in non-institutionalized spiritual practices. We investigate the role spirituality plays on each of our interviewees lives/well-beings through nature, music, and astrology. This episode of Unfundied is centered around religious institutions. It appears that younger generations are shifting away from organized religious practices. In order to assess why this shift is happening, Shei interviewed Jesuit priest Fr. Marc Reeves, Rabbi Zachary Zysman, and Greeklight member Kathleen McGann, all of whom follow institutionalized religious practices. We investigate religion's role and importance in the modern world, as well as adaptations that need to be made in order for religion to persist.
