It all started with a message from Tonya to Amy on Instagram. "The Rose is playing a special Lollapalooza after show on Friday, August 4 in Chicago...would you want to go?" Spoiler alert. Amy said "YES," and is now a changed woman. Join us for a very special Afternoona Army and Afternoona Delight collaboration with me (Tona) and Amy as we recap the experience of seeing The Rose at their post Lolla midnight show at The Vic Theatre in Chicago. We take you on a meandering tour through the Chicago suburbs to a local K-Pop store, bubble tea cafe, and dinner and snacks at Joong Boo market before finally heading to the city to wait in a line two blocks long with the lovely, welcoming Black Rose community. Then...the transformative experience of seeing The Rose live, getting home at 3:00 a.m., and decompressing the day after. It's a whole journey, folks, and we're so excited to share it with you!

Park Seo-joon, Choi Woo-shik, Park Hyung-sik, and Peakboy are besties with our BTS (currently blonde) beau Kim Taehyung, and form the well-known "Wooga Squad." In a rural trip that mirrors the popular BTS show In The Shop, the Wooga crew heads off for a weekend of feels, sleepover snuggles, and yes...matching pajamas. Get into your comfy pants and dive in alongside Alison, Megan and friend of the pod and V Bias, Becky for a look at why this trip might be relaxing for the guys...but provides additional respite for anyone needing a vacation from toxic masculinity.
We love a good BTS collab, and it's even better when it's an artist we adore. Halsey has worked with BTS in the past and appeared in Road to D-Day as Suga's number one hair stylist. In Lilith, a song released in conjunction with a new edition of the popular video game Diablo, we see the two of them take a walk on the dark side. While there as some minor controversy regarding people decrying the video for promoting demon worship, Becky and Alison had a different take. And if they're wrong, we don't wanna be right. This video was smoking and the song is fire.

BTS and Army are famous for breaking audio and video streaming records on platforms such as Spotify and YouTube. Why does Army work so hard to hit those big numbers, does it matter in the bigger picture, and is it something you need to be concerned about?
Because so many of us are newer, pandemic army, we wanted to do a short episode on the whys and hows of Billboard streaming. However, we also think that loving BTS should be about joy and healing, so it’s ok to start small — or not at all. We’re still learning ourselves, so come on the journey with us!

It's not that we didn't know enlistment was happening. BTS members are South Korean. South Korea has mandatory military conscription. However, the news came today. Starting with Kim Seokjin, BTS members are going to be serving their time. As for us? It's time to apply that red lipstick, learn to do victory rolls, and slide up the silk stockings to support the guys.

Afternoona Army is back with our monthly full-length episode. Bangtan U is an ongoing series that helps folks navigate the complexities of BTS fandom. This time we are tackling BTS merchandise. Army life is not necessarily cheap. The music and the fan experience are the most important things. Many people prioritize saving for concert tickets/travel. That said, KPOP is big business and there are a lot of goodies out there. You don’t need them to be a legit fan. You don’t even need to be interested in them. Not at all. But if having some mementos brings you joy and doesn’t break the bank, it can be a fun experience, too. Stanning BTS comes with steep learning curve. One of the things that's initially confusing is all the shorthand used by everyone. At first, Lia and new Afternoona Army International Correspondent, Lexi Jessop, were baffled by the jungles of animal emojis used to discuss BTS. We've now come to appreciate that emojis are great example of symbiotic relationship between BTS and Army: They serve as code, which creates fuzzy feelings like belonging and complicity, shorten and standardize member names on social media, fit within character limits, and have same meaning for i-army, and simplify subtitling. So how did we get here? And do we agree on the conventions? Lexi has mixed feelings on Min Young being a cat, Lia strongly feels that a chipmunk is nothing like a squirrel, and is V ultimately a tiger? A bear? Or is it sort of perfect that he's both?
