Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born near Frankfurt, Germany. They read law at university, but were inspired to study how spoken language changes over time. This led them to collect many popular oral European folk tales and set them down on paper. Jacob did most of the research and Wilhelm did most of the writing. The brothers became librarians and also worked on compiling language books and a dictionary
