Philip came to yoga because a studio was running a special, his massage therapist had recommended he try it, and it was an activity he thought he and his wife, Dawn, would enjoy doing together. By the end of the first class, he recognized that yoga offered more challenges and opportunities than he could have ever imagined. By the end of the first month, he knew that he would be renewing his membership. He was sleeping better, his joints made less noise when got out of bed, and his overall wellness improved. Not only does he wish he had been practicing yoga when he took up golf almost 30 years ago, he wishes it had been incorporated in his youth sports growing up.

Sporting Kansas City has welcomed Kurt Andrews to the club’s technical staff to serve as Director of Sports Medicine. Andrews, a Michigan native, arrives in Kansas City after six seasons as the LA Galaxy’s assistant athletic trainer during which time he was part of two MLS Cup championship teams. He has participated in Major League Soccer’s annual Medical Symposium each of the past seven years, while also completing U.S. Soccer’s Recognize 2 Recover concussion awareness program.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and a Masters of Athletic Training, in addition to certifications from the National Athletic Trainers Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, and EXOS among other national organizations. As a member of the Professional Soccer Athletic Trainers Society, Andrews has assumed leadership positions as a Western Conference Senator and representative on the MLS Research Committee and Continuing Education Committee. He is also an author for the BOC Blog as a member of their writing committee.
Andrews will oversee the team’s staff of sports medicine experts, which includes the following individuals responsible for the daily health and well-being of Sporting Kansas City players: Jake Brownback, assistant athletic trainer Amy Dirks, nutritionist Khalid Jones, massage therapist Satoshi Iida, assistant athletic trainer Chris Wolbert, team physical therapist.
In addition, Andrews will work directly with Scott Luallin (chief medical officer), Neal Erickson (physician), Kirk McCullough (orthopedic surgeon), Mike Khadavi (physician), and David Black (chiropractor) for the comprehensive medical care of players on the rosters of Sporting Kansas City, Swope Park Rangers, and Sporting KC Academy.
Andrews will be based at Pinnacle, Sporting Kansas City’s new world-class training facility, where he will be closely integrated with longtime club employee Chet North in his role as Director of the Sports Performance Lab and Medical Research, as well as the team of professionals inside the Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center.

She describes her path through school and why to get involved. Like - Comment - Subscribe Erika graduated as a Master of Health Science: Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Missouri on May 19th, 2019. At the University of Missouri, she experienced a diverse and in-depth practicum that immersed her in the comprehensive assessment and treatment processes necessary for providing quality patient-centered intervention. Throughout her clinical practicum, she advocated for her clients and provided thorough family and patient education. She also completed a Master’s Thesis during this time at the University of Missouri. This experience allowed her to become confident in reviewing and interpreting the literature within the field of speech-language pathology as well as problem solve issues related to thesis project. Following graduate work, she sought out a Clinical Fellowship in Speech-Language Pathology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital with an emphasis in pediatric feeding and swallowing. Once completion of her Clinical Fellowship in March of 2020 she continued practicing at St. Louis Children’s Hospital with her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. She continued to work as an SLP at Children's. Throughout her career at Children’s, she has exercised critical thinking, collaborative care, flexibility, and interpersonal skills for promoting success with my patients. She will be starting a new roll with the Chicago Speech Therapy group and looks forward to gaining and earning leadership roles.

Lisa Mische Lawson, Ph.D., CTRS, professor, joined the department in 2006, She is the therapeutic science doctoral degree program director, is a mentor to students in that program, and has also taught and mentored students in the occupational therapy degree programs. As a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, Mische Lawson focuses on the benefits of recreation participation for individuals with disabilities or chronic diseases. In 2012, she received the School of Health Professions Stata Norton Award for teaching excellence and in 2016 she received the University of Kansas Medical Center Early Career Achievement in Health Professions Alumna Award. Mische Lawson was added to the Fulbright Specialist roster for expertise in inclusive and adaptive recreation in 2018. In 2019 she completed a Fulbright Specialist project promoting research at Ala-Too International University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. In 2019, the American Therapeutic Recreation Association recognized Mische Lawson's contributions with the association's Scholarly Achievement Award, the highest scholarship award for the profession.
Hi, my name is Drew Garner. I'm one of the Health Science teachers here at Turner High School. Five years ago I had a student come up and ask me a couple of weeks before she graduated. If I remember what I told her about becoming a nurse during her health class or freshman year. I told her this was four years ago and I talked a lot about different types of health care careers in health class, but she was really specific about wanting to get into nursing school. So next couple of weeks we looked at what schools in the area offered the program that she was interested in. The next year I had five or six students come up and ask me the same types of questions about how to apply for schools, what schools had certain programs or degrees, and all of this kind led to starting the Health Science pathway here at the high school. So that's my WHY as to getting into the health care Health Science pathway. We have now started and turned it into a podcast and YouTube channel. This is going to act as our guest speaker library for our current and future health care careers. Students that are interested in getting into a healthcare profession.
I wanted students to be able to learn a lot about the different varieties of aspects of health care professions, not just that there are nurses and doctors, but when we started to talk about getting guest speakers to come into school, wanted to look at a variety of different health care professions. So we came up with the five pillars of things that our students wanted to learn about. The first was careers in healthcare, sports medicine, like? What are the different careers there are that everybody is not just a nurse or doctor? We wanted to learn from the experiences of former students from the high school, so people that had graduated maybe 5-6 seven years ago. What they were doing in college to further educate themselves as well as get into their professions and learn their processes and.
The skills that they learned in high school and college could have helped them with their current profession. We also wanted to hear from instructors and professors from colleges and universities that we're teaching these classes. They wanted to learn about the pathways, how many credit hours there were, what classes were like you know, just the ends and outs of college, and what to expect. Some of the non-traditional pathways of getting into healthcare career fields. Maybe it's starting out as a CNA. Working your way up while continuing your education while working in a hospital. Students also were interested in what continuing education was available for them as professionals and any health care career events that were happening for them that they could go to.

Every birth looks different, and I believe that every birth deserves more support, no matter what kind of birth you have to have or end up having. Support comes in physical, mental & emotional ways for the birthing person as well as her partner. This is a big day for your partner as well, and they deserve to be present for it too. It is my job to have the laboring mother and her partner feel supported, comfortable, and confident. Preparing for birth can be so important – mentally & physically! Jordan Stiers joined Kansas Athletics and Kansas Team Health in 2020, serving as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Kansas volleyball and track & field. In her role as an athletic trainer, Stiers provides quality care in the evaluation of injuries of student-athletes and administers proper care and recommends training regimens for student-athletes, among other responsibilities. Prior to joining KU, Stiers worked on a seasonal internship with the Kansas City Chiefs, where she aided staff athletic trainers in advanced treatment and rehabilitation protocols for NFL athletes. Stiers was also responsible for mentoring and leading six summer interns through daily responsibilities during training camp, among other responsibilities. Stiers earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in 2019 from the University of Kansas, before earning her Master of Science in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania in 2020. Mary Fry is a professor in sport and exercise psychology and is the Director of the KU Sport and Exercise Psychology Lab. Her research focuses on creating a caring and task-involving climate for individuals (e.g., athletes, coaches, exercisers) in physical activity settings and the social, psychological, and physical benefits of experiencing such a climate. Dr. Fry completed her graduate degrees at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (MS) and Purdue University (PhD). She serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, the Journal of Sport Psychology in Action, and she is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology. Dr. Wilson conducts research in the neuromuscular control of human motion using engineering principles from control theory and dynamics. Welcome to the 6th episode of Health Science Coach, a guide to your healthcare career. Today we take a look into the life of a Chiropractor Like - Subscribe - Comment Dr. Chris Harris' Chiropractic Story: The year was 2011, and Chris’s business required a tremendous amount of travel, which added a lot of stress to his personal life. He spent much of his time on planes and driving to see customers. The pain started between his shoulder blades, and soon began to travel down to his left elbow, and finally felt numbness in his left pinky and ring finger. He was losing strength in that arm. His friend and family physician tried steroids called trigger injections; however, the symptoms persisted. It became difficult to sleep and he woke up several times every night in pain. The physician explained that the next step was referred to a surgeon. The thought of surgery was terrifying because Chris’s mother went through seven neck and back surgeries. The surgeons helped her, but after each surgery, degeneration would set in above and below the area of surgery. Eventually, she became dependent upon opioids just to establish a tolerable quality of life. The long-term use of pain meds took a great toll on her health as organs began to fail. First were kidneys and then her bowels. The doctors did everything they could, but she passed away. Afraid that history was about to repeat itself Chris’s wife encouraged him to try Chiropractic. His physician advised you have nothing to lose. Dr. Alan Dabbs took x-rays of his neck and identified bone spurs in the lower cervical (neck) area. He concluded that the spurs may be putting pressure on a nerve that radiates from the spine down to his left hand. Dr. Dabbs adjusted his neck and Chris felt a lightning bolt-type sensation into his numb fingers. At first, he was stunned and then realized that was the first feeling in his fingers within the last few weeks. Dr. Dabbs explained that it might take several adjustments to get complete relief. And after three adjustments Chris regained normal sensations in his left arm and started to regain strength. He no longer needed pain meds and avoided surgery. The first thought that crossed his mind was “What if” my mother would have known about chiropractic? In high school, Chris dreamt of becoming a doctor, but life took him in a different direction. However, this event had such a profound impact that he decided to move to Overland Park, KS to pursue a Doctor of Chiropractic. He was in search of the most objective ways to diagnose and treat patients so that he could provide the same results that he experienced, and although he couldn’t help his mother there would be literally thousands of people that would benefit from Chiropractic care. During school, Dr. Chris became a certified specialist in the Upper Cervical Technique because of its ability to objectively diagnose and treat chronic cases. It was the only technique that helped his wife with her migraines and fibromyalgia. Additionally, Chris became certified McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy for the spine, Acupuncture, and Activator as an alternative for patients that preferred not to be adjusted manually. The result of this training has qualified him to use x-rays, orthopedic tests, functional assessments, and multiple other tools to diagnose and resolve patients’ problems. When you visit Dr. Chris he wants you to know that you enter the office as a patient, but when you walk out you become part of the Apex family. Children’s Mercy is the best in the game when it comes to pediatric sports medicine. In our nationally ranked Sports Medicine Center, we help student-athletes maintain and increase strength and speed through performance conditioning. Welcome to the "First" Forth episode of Health Science Coach, a guide to your career. Today we take a look in to the life of an Athletic Trainer. Linda Jensen, Athletic Trainer Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy LAT, ATC Linda Jensen is a certified athletic trainer for the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy and serves as the head athletic trainer at Turner High School. In her current role since 2012, Jensen has been a certified athletic trainer since 1992 and has spent her entire career in the secondary school setting. An integral part of the Golden Bears’ success, Jensen’s priorities center around injury prevention, evaluation and treatment of the student-athletes and she can be found on the sidelines of the court, pitch or field. Jensen is on site at practices, home contests and some road games during the school year, as well as camps and training throughout the summer providing care for the Golden Bears. She is CPR/AED-certified and equipped with an AED at all times. In addition to her extended Turner High School family, Jensen is married with three kids of her own. She grew up on a farm and loves genealogy and quilting in her free time. The Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy is the official athletic training provider of Turner High School and provides similar services to multiple other high schools around the Kansas City metro area. Community Education programs: Stop the Bleed Death from bleeding can occur in minutes, but so can saving a life. Stop the Bleed is a 90-minute class that teaches participants to carry out a few simple life-saving techniques that make up the basics of emergency, on-the-spot care, including: Direct pressure Wound packing Tourniquet use An initiative from the American College of Surgeons, Stop the Bleed strives to create a national policy to improve survival rates after intentional mass-casualty events.
