Dr. Michael Mills and Dr. Jessica Harry Watson discuss the imposter phenomenon, a common experience in graduate school where students feel like they are inadequate, even when successful. This feeling can stem from perfectionism, lack of community, and societal pressures. Faculty can mitigate the imposter phenomenon by providing intentional mentorship, fostering a sense of belonging, and being transparent about the realities of academic work. Students can combat imposter syndrome by advocating for themselves, building support networks, focusing on progress, and remembering that they have a voice and belong at the table.
