Healing: *Top influence is to change identity—see self in a new way, figure-ground shift, change your default mode network (DMN). It's loosely connected regions of the brain that light up together to form the neurobiological basis of self—who you are. How to change it? Change your routine, travel, meditate, yoga, education, new experience. P. 293 (Rediger doesn’t mention it but different alters have very different medical issues in people with Dissasociative Identity Disorder.)
*Use your mind to reduce stress: Strengthen the immune system by reacting positively to stress, e.g., ask what’s the lesson or challenge? Chronic stress can alter the genes of the immune cells, flood the body with cortisol and other stress hormones. This can lead to chronic inflammation (the immune system in overdrive) which harms the immune system and can lead to disease. P. 126, 128. Depression also weakens the immune system. Up to 80% of visits to primary care doctors are related to stress. (You can test C-reactive protein as a marker for inflammation.) Calm the vegus nerve as with Herbert Benson’s relaxation technique (drawing from Transcendental Mediation, relax you muscles, breathe slowly, while focusing n a mantra for ten to 20 minutes daily) and social connection. Avoid the epidemic of loneliness and enjoy small moments of loving connection that activate oxytocin anti-stress tonic. P. 193. The higher you heart rate variability (HRV—see HeartMath) the more engaged the vagus nerve and the more active the parasympathetic system (which calms and heals). P. 196 The vagus nerve connects the three brains—head, heart, and gut. The goal is to lengthen telomeres on chromosomes, which are linked to longevity. The faster they wear down, the faster we age. P. 160 Placebo works even when we know it’s a sugar pill because we feel cared for. P. 251 Quantum physics’ double-slit experiment shows that just observing changes a particle to a wave. (Love and prayer are powerful according to healer Dr. Nemeh in Ohio.) Our bodies ae energy, “frozen light,” as physicist David Bohm said.
*For those with ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences--childhood traumas, abuse, neglect), clear them because they can rewrite your DNA to be more susceptible to disease, which can be passed on to your children. P. 274. (The ACE test is on https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/03/02/387007941/take-the-ace-quiz-and-learn-what-it-does-and-doesnt-mean) 90% of chronic illness is environmental not genetic (psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics). P. 38.
- Eat nutrient-rich natural foods and avoid processed foods and sugar as its sharp-edged crystals tear the walls of arteries and capillaries where plaque is more likely to build up in the repair sites, narrowing the blood vessels. Sugar also increases inflammation, but it’s addictive because it stimulates dopamine. Avoid a lot of meat and emulsifiers (as in ice cream and mayonnaise)—the later disrupt the microbiome and triggers chronic inflammation. The health of the microbiome is related to cancer and other diseases. A single round of antibiotics can impact the gut bacteria for up to a year. P. 56 For every human cell in our bodies we have 100 bacterial cells. Professor Michael Pollan recommends eating mostly plants.

These five hikers started in Mexico three months ago and are half way to Canada, the end of the Pacific Crest trail. I interviewed them on the section of the trail near Jonestown, off of Hwy 32 while hiking to Humboldt Summit (described in the Sierra Club book "Hiking Butte County," p. 61). They are not walking as a group. They discuss why they're hiking for six months and how they manage, including food.

Have you ever wanted to know what men thought about the impact of absentee fathers, feminists, equality, masculinity, and other issues? Let's be a fly on the wall and get some insight into these questions and so much more by reading A Global Dialogue on Masculinity: 33 Men Speak Out by Gayle Kimball. This book offers personal discussions, interviews, and candid opinions from men of various countries. Normally women are the spokespersons for male-female relationships but now let's hear what the men have to say on the subject. The author interviewed thirty-three men representing different generations, ethnic groups, and sexual orientations from countries including Canada, the United States, China, India, Germany, and Africa. These men are part of several organizations including fathers' rights groups, men's studies, and support groups, which gives the reader a wide net perspective on how men see the world along with their input on some of the biases that they've been charged with collectively.
Reading A Global Dialogue on Masculinity by Gayle Kimball displayed the importance of a father's role. Whether negative or positive, the relationship that a father has with his child or children impacts and influences their future. The negative encounter carries on for generations unless something or someone changes it. This book not only asks some tough questions but is instrumental in giving men a voice so that solutions can be found to give our boys a fighting chance to become better men and fathers. Gayle does some heavy lifting in providing detailed information and resources about how we got here. She talks about women wanting bad boys, marrying up, college graduates, the prison system, traditions, gender roles, sexuality, and self-expression. As these topics are explored, it clearly shows within these interviews some of the challenges that men encounter. This platform allows men the ability to open up and express how they're really feeling. It's time to give our boys and men the space and support they need to heal. If you're looking for a book with a lot of resources along your journey to self-expression, either for yourself or the men in your life, add this one to your collection.
These elders graduated from the same Los Angeles high school in 1961. The 11 participants frankly and movingly discuss their life journeys, including being falsely labeled by teachers, the importance of a life purpose and passion, and the role of luck. Some faced physical and mental health challenges, including addiction.
Three couples profiled in "Happy Marriages: 30 Global Couples Share their Stories" discuss their lessons, how the resolve disagreements, parenting, and the glue that connects them in a happy relationship. Robin and Jim are in Georgia (married 39 years, four sons, second marriages). Laurel and Steve are in California (married 28 years, blended family with 4 children). Rajni and Sandeep are in New Delhi (married 21 years with two children and careers). Two counselors join in.

13 women and men approaching age 80 share what they've learned through the decades, such as don't marry for beauty and sex and be open to new experiences and people. They all graduated from high school in Los Angeles and only three moved out of state. Their childhoods were safe and adults didn't need to do as much supervision as now, and most of their mothers were homemakers.

The 30 couples’ featured in "Happy Marriage" emphasized being able to compromise, overcome selfishness, never give up, and structure in couple time. Those with previous marriages felt they learned from them how to have a more satisfying relationship, often with the help of a counselor. Couples learned to stick to their own feelings rather than blame their partner and many learned from a therapist how to communicate more effectively and felt closer and developed trust after working through disagreements. Dr. David Feinstein and his wife Donna Eden think of themselves as opposites in many ways, who conflicted until they developed a technique to resolve their differences, explained in a chapter in Happy Marriages: 30 Global Couples Tell Their Stories.
Therapists Hal and Sidra Stone reported in Partnering that, “Many times in our early years together we both feared our love was dead. It returned even more powerful than before because we had mastered a new experience.” They realized that love alone is not enough to make a marriage work because of the power of our unconscious sub-personalities. They emphasize that “There is nothing more important than realizing we are a group of selves (like an actual person) that regulates our lives. We have to learn who in us is interacting with our partner.”
Rochana Jayasinghe, feminist academic, Sri Lanka, has traveled to many countries. She is the co-founder of the Zoom discussion group called Plain Tea Talk Space, is a play writer, and has written about FGM, abortion, skin color, feminist history, etc.
Babar Ali founded a free school as a boy to teach unschooled low-income children. His program is Anand Siksha Niketan, Home of Joyful Learning. Today girls are a majority of the students and most of the teachers are women. He emphasizes teaching values and with fun, paying attention to the individual student's development. History: Based on the mythopoetic or New Age men’s movement of the early ’80, unconsciously the 3 founders (Bill Kauth, Ron Hering, and Rich Tosi) created an initiation ceremony in 1985 Wisconsin. They drew on Native American traditions and Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey: descent, ordeal (explain), and return. How is this different for men than women? Bill Kauth said he wanted an alternative to the “soft masculine,” a “sense of ferocity, hard masculine.” Explain. How does dancing fit?
Seems to emphasize doing service and accountability, and provide support groups.

Gayle Kimball interviewed 65 visionary scientists, leaders in the Consciousness Movement, to learn what their research findings reveal about reality. She also asked about their personal development to discover why they’re so brave as they challenge the dominant materialist paradigm.
The three books in the Mysteries Trilogy explore how consciousness shapes reality, enables healing and provides access to knowledge from beyond the physical senses. The visionary scientists conclude that we are more than our physical bodies with more potential than we realize and that science needs to expand to account for consciousness.
Common themes that surfaced about these pioneers indicate that the visionary scientists are highly intelligent and did well in school and university, as you would expect. The majority were first-born in their families (35 compared to 26 latter-born). Most of the US scientists grew up on the East or West Coast or live there now, with a few exceptions, such as some born in the Midwestern states like Ohio. Others grew up in the UK or Canada and one each in Germany, Brazil and the Netherlands (Bernardo Kastrup), Italy, or Greece. Some are first-generation with parents from India, Latvia, Palestine, and Ireland, demonstrating the rich contributions provided by immigrant families. Some had health or family problems in their youth that motivated their search for understanding.
Some of the visionary scientists had unexpected and transformative mystical experiences, like physicians John Ryan and Richard Moss, physicist Jude Currivan, psychologist Steve Taylor, and linguist J.J. Hurtak. For a few, an NDE was transformative, such as for Eben Alexander, Joyce Hawkes, and Marilyn Mandela Schlitz. Family influences included visionary mothers for James Carpenter, David Lorimer, Judith Swack, Christine Simmonds-Moore and John Kruth, or an influential sibling for Marjorie Woollacott, David Muehsam, Mary Rose Barrington, and Larry Burk. Psychedelic drugs influenced scientists like Susan Blackmore and David Luke. Having his “bad back” healed by a man he met while lifeguarding at a swimming pool led William Bengston to research healing, and an injury led Richard Hammerschlag to study acupuncture. Overall, curiosity about reality and the willingness to study the data was the main motivation to follow the evidence, however much in conflict with the materialist belief system.

Scott Huber is the author of “After the Virus: A Surviralist’s Journal” dystopian novel set in 2034 after a global pandemic. He wrote the book before the Covid pandemic. The novel includes the hero living off the plants and animals in the wilderness, which Huber knows how to do. We also discuss his work as a Chico City Council member, how to get action, and the issue of homelessness. He and his wife are also building a cabin themselves in Wyoming.

Mountain Maidu elder Lorena Gorbet is a basket weaver and co-founder of the Maidu Summit Consortium and Board Member. Her group preserves thousands of acres of land in Humbug Valley/Tasmam Koyon and other sites near Lake Almanor in interior Northern California. Her ancestors knew how to keep forests healthy with controlled burning and pruning. She succeeded because she persisted, built a consortium, got grants and lawyers, and appealed to social justice, etc.

Formerly a skeptic and Born Again Christian, she expanded her understanding of God and the afterlife due to encounters with entities.
