Welcome to Episode 2 of our series on the fight for the throne of England. This week we are discussing the life and rule of King Stephen I. Stephen of Blois was born into privilege and was, partly, raised by Henry I in England. He was also one of the wealthiest landowners in England at the time. During Henry's reign Stephen swore oaths to Matilda as Henry's successor. However, when Henry died, Stephen was the first to cross to London and take the crown. He ruled for almost 20 years, but he rarely saw a moment of peace. Join us we cover Stephen's life, rule, family, wars and death.

Hey there History Fans! We're back and starting our new year with a bang of a series. What happens when the King of England dies and has no male heirs? He tries to pass it to his daughter- or hopes that it would. In the 1100s there was an 18 yearlong feud between Empress Matilda and her cousin, Stephen, for the right to rule England. On the first part we are covering the life of Empress Matilda, from her first marriage to a Holy Roman Emperor, to her second marriage into the House of Plantagenet. We also discuss her relationship with her father, Henry I, as well as her children, the nobles of England and the English clergy.

On our last episode for Halloween, we are covering the Grandaddy of all Spooks: Vlad Tepes! His childhood was unusual as he spent it as a hostage in a Sultan's court. After being released he vowed to reclaim his throne and fight against the Turks. In total he would regain his throne 3 times. Along the way he implemented fear tactics and severe punishments; his favorite being impalement. No one was excluded from his path of destruction. During his lifetime poems, ballads and rumors were created about him. Since the publication of Dracula in the 1890s his legacy has grown to include being synonymous with vampires and the undead.

Join us as we look at her life, the evidence, the hearsay, how the rumors began and her lasting legacy in history.

For our second week of October, we are staying in France to look at the life and legacy of Marquis de Sade. Most authors write what they know, and he knew much about debauchery, perversion, depravity and torture. Themes and values in his life made it into everything he wrote about. His books were also mixed with his political views and can be viewed as a kind of satire. Additionally, he was an aristocrat who lived through the French Revolution, gained seats in the new government, was sent to exile, was in prison for nearly half his life, carried on adulterous affairs and angered Napoleon. He also believed in a life where he could do whatever he wanted, whenever, however and to whomever. He is also the person for whom the term 'sadism" is named after!

Disclaimer: this episode discusses perversion, sexual abuse, sadism and torture. It is not meant for children and listener discretion is advised.

Welcome to our first episode of Spooky Season! We are kicking it off with a bang with Gilles de Rais. He was a knight for Charles VII, he fought alongside Joan of Arc and was made Marshall of France for his accomplishments in the Hundred Year War. He was also a spendthrift who loved producing extravagant plays, with free food and drink for all. It also seemed he liked to dabble in the Dark Arts, alchemy & demon summoning! He is maybe most remembered for possibly being the most prolific serial killer in all France, with estimations as much as 600 bodies! Join us as we travel back the 1420s to take a look at Gilles' life, his excessive spending, his accusations, his trial, the evidence against him, theories, modern thoughts and much more!

Note: This episode does contain talk about serial killings, as well as potential pedophilia & potential child killing. It may not be suitable for all listeners; discretion is advised.

This week we are diving back into true crime with Adam Worth: the Napoleon of Crime! He started off as a petty thief but quickly rose to form his own criminal gangs in New York, most notably for bank heists. Eventually he fled to England and Paris, where he was followed by the Pinkertons. He would spent 25 years as the head of several international criminal gangs. His most notable crime was stealing the highly-prized Gainsborough painting of Duchess Georgiana. Though it's not known by many, his exploits would become the basis for Professor Moriarty, nemesis to Sherlock Holmes! Join us as we track his crimes, his life and his downfall.

Nellie Bly was a very well known investigative journalist in the late 1800s. It didn't matter to her if the job was unsafe or against the social norms of the time; she had a life full of adventure. Throughout her decades-long career she: exposed conditions in factories, went undercover as a mental patient in Blackwell's Asylum, traveled to Mexico to write about the dictator, was on the front lines in Serbia during WWI, wrote novels, patented inventions and more. Her most notable feat was traveling around the world in only 72 days during a competition- which she did while traveling alone! Join us as we talk about these events and much more!

This week we are taking a trip back to the early 1900s in New York City to meet the city's first ever female detective: Isabella Goodwin. Goodwin spent nearly 30 years on the force, mostly working as a matron in the local jails, then as an undercover cop. She was so good at this that over her career it is believed that she helped to solve over 500 cases working undercover. Her most notable was the Taxicab Robberies in 1912. Join us for a look at Goodwin's career and how she helped to solve a case that made national news.

This week we are taking a look at the life of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. He was an unusual king with an unusual rule. He preferred to live in the fantasy world in his head rather than in the real world. He became overly obsessed not only with Medieval German folklore, but also the composer Richard Wagner, whose work also centered around German folklore. He was referred to as Mad King Ludwig, and the story of his death is as mysterious as his life.

There's the introverted English lord who built a tunnel system under his estate to hid from everyone; another who tried to ride a bear and ate only rice pudding; and another who may have taken to cross-dressing. Then there's Henry Cyril Paget, who, among many other things, decided to make a jacket out of emeralds! All this and much more on this week's episode!!

This week we are taking a look at another great ruler from history: Suleiman the Magnificent. He ruled over the Ottoman Empire from 1520-1566 and made many changes in law that benefited the people under him. He believed that tolerance of beliefs and religion were key to holding an empire together. He allowed people outside of the Ottoman Empire to take part in his artisan schools. His favorite wife was the daughter of a Polish priest. There may even be truth to the story of his heart being buried! Join us as we look at the life, reign and legend that is Suleiman I.

In 1880 well-known astronomer, Edward Pickering, made a remark that his Scottish maid could do a better job than one of his colleagues. He then hired her on to help with the catalog he was developing, and it would turn out that his remark was correct. In addition, Williamina Fleming not only made a decades-long, high-reputation career as an astronomer, but would pave the way for more women in Victorian-era sciences. She would also head the Harvard Computers- an all-female astronomy team, tasked with analyzing and classifying stars in the late 1800s. Join us on this week's episode as we cover discoveries of astronomical proportions!

Welcome to Part Two of the Sparrow Wars. Today we are focusing on America's Sparrow War from the 1850s-1890s. When insects are eating away trees, what do you do to combat this... introduce a new species, of course! English Sparrows were introduced to the American east coast in the 1850s. They even became a fad amongst amateur ornithologists. Expert ornithologists were against this invasive species, which sparked a decades-long academic "war" in the ornithology world. Join as we talk about the key players in this "war", the outrageous slanders against each side and the unlikely reason why the sparrow population in America began to level out at the turn of the century.

In June 1912 the entire Moore family, as well as the visiting young Stillinger sisters, would be found brutally murdered by an axe. No one knows why or who executed any entire family. Some claim it was a random drifter. Others say it was a serial killer. Some believe that it was a rival of Josiah Moore. There's a long list of suspects and a lot of information with this one, so strap in.

This week we are going back to the Middle Ages for some bizarre music. First, we go to the early 1500s and visit a king who was presented with a very unusual gift: cats. But not just any cats, a piano made of screeching cats! We continue back to the 1300s and meet King Louis XI of France, who commissioned an Abbe to create the most unusual thing he could think of. The result: the pig piano! Last on out tour, we go to France in the 1100s and visit the Troubadour, Bertran de Born. He was a major celebrity of his time and would often write songs about war, soldiers and torture. Join us at the end where we read you some of his lyrics!

We've all heard the horror tales of someone waking up in a hotel bathtub full of ice, only to find one of their kidneys missing. Well, those stories have to begin somewhere. Today we give you the real-life horror story of the Gland Pirates of Chicago in the early 1920s. Headlines and police reports detail the stories of several men who were drugged and woke to find their testicles missing! We also dive into the back story of this and how it led to illegal harvesting of testicles in Chicago in the 1920s.

Warning: Though this episode is not graphic, it does contain talk of illegal organ removal and medical history that may be uncomfortable for some.

James Graham, a doctor without a degree in the 1770s, touted that he could cure all manner of ailments from cancer to sterility. He is known as the “Prince of Quackery”. If he wasn’t trying to cure you via an ‘earth bath”, he would also offer a trip to his Health Temple. Here, he would sell you all types of cures from nitrous to electricity and various elixirs. During the mid 1800s laughing gas was all the rage, used at parties, surgeries and medical sideshows. Then along came ether. Then chloroform. How did these gases become party favorites of the Victorians? How were they discovered? How did they become the anesthetics that we know today? Join us, and guests Kacie and Katelyn, as we laugh our way to the answers!

Edward Leedskalnin came to America in the early 1900s and settled in Florida in 1918. It was here that he built a mysterious structure, known today as Coral Castle. It isn't certain why Ed built. But even more mysterious is HOW. How did an 120lb, 5'2" man cut, move and install several ton limestone blocks by himself? Join us as we try to uncover the mysteries of who Ed was; who was this Sweet Sixteen of his; and most importantly: how did he build this alone. The theories are really off-the-wall on this one!

Scrofula, much like tuberculosis, has been a very common disease throughout much of human history. From the 1000s-1700s one of the many cures for it was to see the King or Queen to receive their Royal blessings upon you. They would touch you, say prayers for you, give you a memento and say you're cured. Or were you? Join us for some medical quackery as we discuss this disease, some of the old ways to cure it, and the staggering numbers of people with it who spent hours in line just to see their Monarch.

What do you do when the Pope issues a bull prohibiting you from joining a social club? Create another one of course! But this time you change up the format a bit. Today we are talking about the Order of the Pug; a progressive society club that cropped up around Europe in the mid-1700s. We'll talk about how it relates to the Free-Masons; what the initiation ritual was like; how progressive it was in the 1700s; and it's supposed downfall over time. Today we are discussing the reign of King John, life in Medieval England, the events leading up to and the implementation of the Magna Carta- one of the most important legal documents in history. It was originally signed in 1215, but has a legacy that is still with us to this day. In fact, many of the democracies around the world are founded with core articles from it. When you think of superstar musicians, who comes to mind? Elvis? The Beatles? Jim Morrison? What if I told you that the first ever musical superstar was a classical pianist named Franz Liszt... During concerts in the 1840s crowds of women would try to steal his clothes, cut off his hair, fight over broken piano strings, secret his coffee dregs and wore portraits of him to the concerts. How did this all start? Why was he so popular? Join us this week as discuss the life of Franz Liszt and his charisma at the piano.

Hello Everyone & Welcome to Spooky Season! We are starting off on a quite macabre note: Le Teatre du Grand-Guignol in Paris. This was a theatre in the Pigalle section of Paris that catered to very graphic, realistic and gruesome plays. The theatre ran from the 1890s to the 1960s. We will discuss the history of the theatre, as well as the history of theatre in France at the time. We will also be covering various plays, writers, actors and recipes for the prosthetics and gore throughout the run of the theatre.

Disclaimer: This episode discusses blood, guts and gore used in realistic theatre plays. If you are uncomfortable with graphic descriptions of these topics, we ask that you check out one of our other episodes.

It's the 1700s in London. Times are hard and money is low. What do you do? If you're like many, you might fence items for cash. If you're Jack Sheppard, you not only fence stolen items, you're arrested multiple times and escape from the "inescapable" jails, particularly Newgate Prison. His escapes included scaling walls with bed sheets, dressing in women's clothing, and climbing a chimney and going through 6 locked doors and a chapel. A near complete skeleton has been found in a cave. DNA sequencing has dated it to the Mesolithic Era of Great Britain (9,000 years ago). During that DNA sequencing it is also found that, in the same city, lives a history teacher who is likely related to Britain's oldest complete skeleton. But the plot twists don't end there! Join us this week as we uncover the life of Cheddar Man and his descendants.

On September 16, 1890 the disappearance of one man may have changed the course of film history! Although we are taught that Edison created the first motion picture camera, it was actually Louis Le Prince. He created two cameras (1885 & 1887). En route from France to New York, in order to show off his new invention and receive a patent for the camera, Le Prince seemed to have vanished; his whereabouts are still unknown today. Come with us as we travel back to the 1880s and discuss the evolution of cameras, Le Prince's disappearance and some conspiracy theories as to what happened to him.

Today we discuss one of the most deadliest fashion fads in history: the Victorian Crinoline Skirts (aka hoop skirts). These were made to spread the dresses away from the body & could reach up tp 6ft in circumference! They also had a propensity to get caught on a lot of things; let alone cause many, many accidents and deaths. This one is a bit longer than usual, but there's a lot of information and a LOT of craziness!!

Palisade, Nevada had the distinction of being called "The Toughest Town West of Chicago" in the late 1870s. Passengers riding the train from San Francisco to Chicago would stop at Palisades on the way. There they would be "greeted" with frequent gunfights, raids, hangings and bank robberies. Passengers would flee back to the train in terror. But unbeknownst to the passengers, everything thing they saw was a hoax!
