Judy Roberson chats to Cape Town singer/songwriter, Mel Malisch, on the SA & Indie Music Zone.

Mel Malisch, a local Kommetjie singer songwriter, has just broken into the live original music scene in the Valley and beyond and is settling in to her new happy space. She has already been spotted and hosted by the respected Barleycorn Music Club, as well as False Bay Folk and her popularity is growing by the minute.

Café Roux have been quick to book her for September, based on the word-of- mouth from her first performances and the content of her songs. And she will be back there in October for a special fundraiser for Masiphumele.

Although her song-writing originates from loss and grief, the songs are foot-tapping, infectious melodies about life, love and gratitude!

She has recently released three singles through streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, with two more on the way.

Her hope is to produce an album.

Trained in classical piano but performing on her acoustic guitar, her music can be described as modern-folk with an element of storytelling.

Her lyrics offer fresh insights, and there is something personal about her song writing that resonates, for those who listen.

For more information about Mel, please check out her Facebook Page, Instagram & YouTube Channel

The Unicorn chats to Dr Jill Fortuin, Executive Director of the NSRI's Drowning Prevention Programme about the work they do in various communities nationally.

DROWNING PREVENTION No person should drown. And yet, in South Africa 29% of fatal drownings are children under 14 years of age. Drowning is preventable and the NSRI is committed to being at the forefront of reaching as many people as possible with our Drowning Prevention initiatives. WHY DROWNING PREVENTION MATTERS We cannot afford to ignore the perils of drowning – and the value of water safety measures. On average there are approximately 1 484 drownings in South Africa annually, of which 29% (450) occur amongst children under 14 years. WHY IT WORKS * Since we launched our water-safety education programme in 2006, approximately 3 million people, 90% of whom are children, have been taught how to be safer around water, how to help a friend in trouble without endangering themselves, and how to provide bystander CPR * Survival Swimming teaches children to control their breathing, orientate themselves in water, float, and propel themselves to safety for 5 or more metres. During our relaunch on the 1st of February 2020, instructors spent 3 exciting hours assessing the skills of and upskilling 56 students in fun a 20 minute lessons * Since 2017, more than 1 000 Pink Rescue Buoys have been installed in dangerous swimming areas around the country and 96 lives have been saved through their use.

Cape Town continues to burst with new talent as singer Carletheia releases her debut single and music video for ‘Over My Shoulder’. Judy Roberson chats to her on the SA & Indie Music Zone.

Carletheia is a new and unique talent: graduated from gigging and church-song, by day is a Swimming teacher and now also one of SA’s newest singing stars.

Her debut single ‘Over My Shoulder’ sees Carletheia work with an exceptional team that shares an experience that would not only just be a first single for her, but a first writing experience for her composers. First to be introduced is Derek Laud, who has made a reputation for himself for breaking boundaries and making history. It is highly unlikely that an academic has ever written a contemporary song. Laud is a Fellow at Cambridge University and visiting professor of London South Bank University. He rose to prominence, not because he was a script writer for UK politicians, but as a highly acclaimed star and contestant in Big Brother in 2005. Derek had never thought of song writing until Patric (from Cape Town Sound) suggested this. Not long after, he shared his folder of song lyrics he had authored and one of these lyrics w as placed with the magnificent classical pianist, Clinton Claasen – currently on a sabbatical in Fraserburg in the deepest Karoo.

Neither Derek nor Clinton had ever composed a song before this. Clinton produced a melody and structure to fit Derek’s lyric; a phrase out of the lyric became the title – ‘Over My Shoulder’.

Linked from London, to the Karoo and ending in Cape Town, where it reached Carletheia who happens to be married to engineer/musician/producer Sergio Gino Trout. The team at Cape Town Sound in Woodstock invested months of work into finding the right style and ‘feel’ for the song.

The main theme for ‘Over My Shoulder’ deals with the destructive effect of substance abuse and Derek explains how this became the message for the single, saying “My first song is shaped by my own personal intersection with a friend who was hooked on crystal meth - the fastest growing substance abuse in South Africa and elsewhere. I had never taken drugs myself and was surprised when a friend turned to me for help. Except he didn’t want help, he just wanted another person to blame for his addiction. Maybe it’s the drug itself, but the overwhelming effect of it appears to be jealousy towards others who can make it without substance abuse. Stay clean if you want your friends to stay by your side.”

A powerful debut, not only for Carletheia, but also her songwriting team as they release a phenomenal single with an important message

Jaques De Klerk chats to Beth Peterson from Fish Hoek Rhythmic Gymnastics Club on the Lunch Zone.

This is a typical underdog story of a small Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in the Deep South. A small club that is rising to the top of the sport against all odds. The club opened its doors in 2016 under the leadership and coaching of Beth Peterson only 17 at the time ( Beth herself Gold medal winner at the SA games). They have had their fair share of challenges and maybe the most frustrating of them was finding a suitable hall with high enough ceilings to practice in. We have practiced everywhere from outside on the fields at schools to the tiniest community halls.

They had a breakthrough when they were given permission to train in Fish Hoek High School's sports centre once a week. For them is was like going to the Olympics. With access to this facility they have been able to practice and maximise their potential and for the first time in their history all five of their competition girls got their Western Province colours and are due to represent the Western Cape in the SA Gym Games at the end of September in Pretoria. However, in order to do so, they need to raise funds.

In discussion with The Unicorn on The Drive Zone, Francois Roux speaks about bikepacking on The Colorado Trail and how it relates back to his views on business and entrepreneurship. Francois is the owner of a number Cash Crusaders outlets including Cash Crusaders Longbeach Mall.

The Colorado Trail is one of the premier, long distance bikepacking trails in the US. It travels through the incredible Colorado Rocky Mountains amongst peaks, glacial lakes, creeks, and a spectacular array of ecosystems. The trail dramatically rises and falls with an average elevation of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) and tops out above 13,000 feet (3,962 meters), just below Coney Summit. It is a through route, or point-to-point, stretching almost 500 miles from the dusty southern Colorado town of Durango, to Denver (Littleton to be exact). It is commonly ridden in the opposite direction, however the 2015 Colorado Trail Race used the south to north course.

The Colorado Trail flows through eight mountain ranges, six wilderness areas, five major river systems, and six National Forests. Bicycles are prohibited in each of the six Wilderness Areas; it is against federal regulations. Thru-cyclists are required to detour around each of the Wilderness areas.

The Unicorn chats to "Pleasures of the Harbour" author, Adam Kethro on the Drive Zone.

ADAM KETHRO'S DEBUT NOVEL, PLEASURES OF THE HARBOUR, TRAVERSES THE HIGH SEAS

AND LOW ROADS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA

From the pen of the renowned and respected South African logistics expert and businessman, Adam Kethro, comes a highly entertaining novel, PLEASURES OF THE HARBOUR. Kethro debuts impressively with this dramatized biography, which tells the story of a young man’s fortitude to achieve his life goals.

It is part adventure and part action, with lots of wheeling and dealing and readers are in for a rollicking ride as he traverses the high seas and low roads of Southern Africa while opening boardroom doors and a few bedroom doors along the way.

With the title of the book drawn from the Phil Ochs album, he draws the reader into a world of ambition, greed, sabotage, bribery, corruption and revenge.

Set in the closing decades of the 20th century in sanction-wracked South Africa. It navigates a world of dodgy business partners, dubious deals and a few failed attempts at love for Adam Askew, before he can finally say he's made it.

Adam Askew is a young man in a hurry and always wanted to be financially independent. Armed with guts, determination and a cocky self-assurance, he sets up a shipping company with a view to take on the world, one ton of cargo at a time.

Fed up with the cliquey set-up in Durban, he takes a gutsy gamble − the biggest risk of his life − one that will ultimately make or break him. He heads for the big city lights of swanky 80’s Joburg and is soon wining and dining at the top of the Carlton, sipping the best champagne in London and making some enemies along the way.

PLEASURES OF THE HARBOUR is published by Tracey McDonald Publishers, and it is due for release on 1 September 2022.

The Unicorn chats to Lochlan Mcleod from Kommetjie Electrotech on The Drive Zone about rechargeable battery technology. With load shedding taking its toll, Lochlan sheds some light on what to expect from different types of batteries and how best to look after and preserve them.

More about Kommetjie Electrotech …

This is a family run Electrical and Technical company, run by the Proud McLeod’s Roger McLeod and Lochlan McLeod. Roger and Lochlan are father and son, As Roger (the Father) always says he is the younger better looking one. We founded the company in 2014 which was run as Kommetjie Electrical and security to which Lochlan moved himself to Kommetjie to join forces side by side with his father, Lochlan started the company Kommetjie Electrotech shortly after Roger starting Kommetjie Electrical, together they started and founded a umbrella company called K.E.S, which does not stand for King Edwards school, but instead Kommetjie electrical and security. Trading as Kommetjie Electrotech and Kommetjie electrical, they chose this name as both of them went to King Edwards The 7th School AKA KES and thus thought it would be great to take their boarding school tradition with them and named the business after their school as they are also proud King Edwards Men.

Since Rogers return to Kommetjie, we bought him a bakkie and put him on the road with his own team Alfred and Sharleen, and today we have not looked back as it was the best thing to do, not only for the business but for our personal relationship as well. We look forward to maintaining the community and the family relationships we have built within the community since starting this company, we are a family driven and community living type of company and our community is where our heart lies.

Don't hesitate to call The proud McLeod’s on 0795312992 chat to our lovely office manager and she will guide us to your homes with a set time and date.
