Kelly explains that the focus system incorporates decades of auditory processing and intervention research. It uses specially treated music, bone-conduction headphones, and activities performed while listening. The music is designed to target different brain functions and skill sets, and the bone-conduction headphones provide a multisensory experience. Kelly emphasizes that the focus system is not intended to correct hearing loss but to improve auditory processing.

Children with sensory processing challenges often struggle to process the sensory information around them, such as bright lights, sounds, and physical contact. By incorporating body breaks and activities that provide proprioceptive input, like animal walks, jumping jacks, or wall push-ups, teachers can help children regulate their sensory systems and improve their attention and engagement in the classroom.
Heather also emphasizes the significance of understanding trauma and its impact on a child's nervous system and learning. Children who have experienced trauma may have difficulties with emotional regulation and establishing relationships, especially after events like the pandemic or natural disasters. Teachers and educators are encouraged to gather information about a child's history, communicate with parents, and create a safe and supportive learning environment.
Mindfulness and movement activities are highlighted as effective strategies to promote regulation and attention in the classroom. Engaging the whole classroom in mindful eating, yoga, or deep-pressure activities can help children become more aware of their bodies and emotions. Additionally, incorporating sensory-based interventions and considering visual perception and eye tracking can be essential for identifying and addressing potential challenges that affect a child's learning and attention.
Ultimately, the conversation underscores the importance of co-regulation, where teachers and students engage in mindfulness activities together. By focusing on the student's sensory needs, creating a supportive environment, and providing opportunities for movement and mindfulness, teachers can help children regulate their nervous systems, improve attention, and enhance their overall learning experience.

In this interview, Edward, a clinical psychologist, discusses his background in studying mother-infant interaction in non-human primates and his shift to focusing on early infant development and working with anxious children after his son was diagnosed with OCD. Emotional Kids Summit
Today Jonily Zupancic and I recap our experience at the Region 10 Summer Dyslexia Institute, Plano, TX. This event happened July 18-19, 2023. Our presentation to the General Session was on July 19th, with a breakout session for each of us after lunch. We took the time to recap our adventure and share what we talked about in this episode.
You may like or dislike our approach as we continue to approach writing and math from a unique and innovative perspective. However, we both believe that changing the mindset of students with SLD comes before the actual task of writing the answers on paper. We use the acronym IMPACT to clarify our message.

In today's episode, Jennifer Porter shares, "As a teacher, they teach you a little bit about dysgraphia and dyslexia and other disabilities like ADHD. You get a very shallow overview. And so when you get students who. Those disabilities, you tend to do a little more research into it because you get a student like that. But when you're a parent, you don't have a clue that your kid has something other than what the doctor said they had. And I believe, and she now believes also, that she has both dyslexia and dysgraphia."

She shares practical tips and materials that she has gleaned from 20 years of teaching in high school English and K-8 special education. Having several children of her own with disabilities, she lives the special education life everywhere she goes.

Dysgraphia, a disability in written expression, results from a neurological glitch that blocks your student's path to success, creating a disconnect between the brain and the body. Working in a classroom where students struggle to keep up with the teacher because they cannot recall what letter to write or the words to write is frustrating to both the teacher and the student. They get stuck three sentences behind the teacher and struggle to copy material from the board. It just breaks my heart to see kids struggling in the classroom.

In this episode, Sabrena Schaefer shares how the Dotterer Dysgraphia Method transformed her understanding of dysgraphia, a disability in written expression. She and Cheri exchange ideas to support handwriting challenges. Sabrena shares how she remediated a student to write the letter "a" and Cheri adds additional methods to remediate that letter. These interventions can be used for any letter or number.
What is dysgraphia?
Before I took the course, I thought dysgraphia was having a hard time writing letters or forming letters backward, writing above the line, through the line, and under the line, or having challenges with writing.
How did a course change your perspective?
Now that I have taken the Dotterer Dysgraphia Method, I know that it's much more than the written component that students struggle. So it's as her book is titled the brain-body disconnect. I learned much more in-depth as I read the book and took the course.
Sabrena shares intervention strategies that she created from the course.
Jan and Cheri are discussing what an intervention is and using the example of a toothbrush to explain the term. Later, they discuss what it means to be twice exceptional.
An intervention is anything used to change a situation's outcome, usually to improve it.
Twice Exceptional students have an IQ above 130 yet have a disability. Many times that disability is in writing.
