As a father, connecting with your kids can sometimes feel like a puzzle where the pieces don't quite fit—especially when the traditional playbook of catch and board games falls short. That's where Tyler Walker steps in as our guide on the latest Balanced Business Dad Podcast. With his background in recreation therapy and a household bustling with five kids, Tyler delves into the nuances of play and its critical role in knitting the family fabric even tighter. He draws from his own experience of growing up with 20 siblings and transitioning from healthcare to entrepreneurship to provide unique insights into fostering deeper relationships through play.

Let's be honest, as business dads, we've all felt that tinge of guilt when we see our children playing solo while we're buried in tasks. But here's the twist—Tyler shines a light on the gift of independent play and its importance in our children's development. This episode is chock-full of wisdom on how we can lead by example, making lifestyle choices like trading screen time for a page-turner to positively influence our little ones. And as we chat, we map out the distinction between core and balance recreation activities, discovering how everyday rituals and special adventures each play a part in creating a thriving family dynamic.

Now, if personal growth and strong relationships are your jam, Tyler and I share some golden nuggets in this conversation. We talk about the transformative power of overcoming shame, embracing your virtues, and surrounding yourself with people who lift you higher. I even spill the beans on how a mentor like Dustin can be a game-changer in your journey. So buckle up and tune in for a heartfelt exploration of play, fatherhood, and the art of being a good person that will leave you inspired to tackle life's challenges with a refreshed perspective.

Fear often arrives before the storm, not in its midst. "The Comfort Crisis" illuminated this truth, and it's the springboard for my conversation with Pastor Ryan Taylor, a man whose impact on my life reverberates beyond Sunday sermons. Together, we navigate the confluence of pastoral duties and entrepreneurial vigor, dissecting what it means to balance the six fundamental pillars of life. Ryan, with roots deep in farm soil, shares the unexpected route that led him to spiritual leadership, a path carved by the hand of a mentor who glimpsed potential beyond the fields.

Crafting a life of intention isn't just wise, it's essential—especially when your vocation extends beyond the boundaries of a clock. In this episode, Ryan and I share our journey towards a structured yet fluid routine that honors our commitments to faith, family, and fitness. We discuss the art of segmenting our day to magnify our presence, be it in prayer, at the dinner table, or in business meetings. Tune in to hear how we've learned to harness careful planning and divine guidance to ward off burnout and ensure each pillar stands strong.

In an age where screens often eclipse human connection, it's urgent we reassess our digital priorities. Our discussion turns to the silent yet potent messages we send when we let technology dictate our attention, especially to those we hold dear. But fear not, we don't just diagnose the problem; we offer strategies to keep relationships at the forefront, like Dr. Gary Chapman's techniques to enrich marital bonds. Join us as we explore ways to maintain intimacy and lead spiritually within our families, finding balance in a world teeming with distraction.

The festive season wraps up, and it's that time again when RJ and Dustin swap tales of holiday cheer and the ever-challenging balance between fatherhood and business. Imagine the scene: family gatherings, a birthday bash, and a jaunt to Branson, Missouri, all while keeping the business wheels turning. But as the party hats are put away, we get real about a phase that looms for many dads – the quiet that fills the house when the kids have flown the nest. It's not just about the silence, but the dance of reconnecting with partners and reshaping those relationships that have been so centered on our children for so long.

Transitioning to an empty nest isn't just about missing the noise and bustle—it's a journey of rediscovery. RJ, five years into this chapter, opens up about sending kids off to college and how the house changes when the last one leaves. RJ shares the raw, mixed emotions that tag along, and how, despite initial sadness, there’s an excitement about what lies ahead. There’s a kind of freedom in making plans without a child's schedule in mind, a sentiment many of us haven’t felt since our early dating days.

Wrapping up, we extend a heartfelt invitation to join our brotherhood of business dads seeking harmony in work and family life. The Balanced Business Dad Facebook Group awaits, a place where you can share, learn, and Dad Up' amidst fathers who understand the hustle. Whether you're navigating the loud, messy years or stepping into the serene unknown of an empty home, we're here for it—all of it. How often do we consider the impact of our decisions on our future selves? What if we started making choices not only for our present selves but also for who we will be two decades down the line? This episode takes you on a journey to discover the profound effects of having a relationship with your future self and how this connection influences the decisions you make today, which in turn, shape your tomorrow.

We kick off by deconstructing the notion of having a 'plan B' and explore why it often serves as a less optimal, easier route. We delve into the idea of the Future Self Framework - a fascinating strategy that encourages us to make decisions with our future selves in mind, inspiring us to live longer and make choices that our future selves would applaud. We also shed light on the significance of teaching our children about the long-term consequences of their decisions, an underappreciated cornerstone of personal growth.

Lastly, we dive into the process of making decisions for our future selves. We reflect on how past experiences and parental influence shape our choices, and how certain steps like accepting a promotion or changing jobs may lead to regrets later on due to increased time and travel. Learn how to balance your current needs with long-term objectives and navigate life choices, ensuring that you're making the best decisions for your future self. Don't miss this enlightening discussion on how connecting with your future self can guide you to a fulfilled life.

What if you had 44 million dollars but your kids didn't know you? This poignant question is at the heart of our discussion today as we challenge the traditional definition of wealth. We're sharing a touching story from Larry Hagner of The Dad Edge podcast that spotlights the crucial importance of striking a balance in life, where business funds your perfect life rather than chasing fame or stardom.

Does "more" always equate to better? We dare to oppose this notion and advocate for the beauty of having enough. The quest for financial wealth, we argue, may often blind us to what truly matters in life. The concept of the second mountain encourages us to find fulfillment beyond the confines of conventional success, suggesting that giving back and being charitable might lead us to the wealth of satisfaction and contentment. Our lively discourse with Dr. Eddie Weller, an accomplished upper cervical chiropractor, reveals that it's not only possible, but achievable with the right mindset! The second part of our dialogue delves into how our thoughts can shape our health and shares an encouraging tale of his 11-year-old son's foray into a junior PGA tournament. With a mix of personal anecdotes and professional insights, Dr. Weller gives us practical tips for maintaining good health. How you answer that tiny question makes a huge impact on your decisions, your actions, and ultimately your life.

They become as needy as a beggar with an empty bowl.

You immediately become more attractive—and get to have more sex—when you get rid of your neediness.

In this episode, you’ll discover what you need to do so your wife chases you for sex instead.

Back in the 70’s and 80’s, a man had to be tough. You had to keep your emotions to yourself and never let anyone know what you were truly feeling.

The result of this?

The pent-up emotions lead to blowing up at your loved ones and a cause of depression and even a divorce.

The times are changing, and people are adapting “The Warrior Mindset” instead.

In this episode, join us with Martin Salama, a life coach who discusses how men can adapt the warrior mindset and be vulnerable with their emotions. Tune in to discover how to live a life filled with abundance in every aspect of your life.

Listen now.

Show highlights include:

Being a better business owner, husband, and dad isn’t impossible if you don’t have faith… But you’re playing the game on “expert mode” instead of “easy mode.”

That’s what today’s guest, founder of The Podcast Factory, Jonathan Rivera, discovered after a series of ups and downs in his entrepreneurial journey (including losing everything in the 2008 housing market crash).

Everything hinges on leadership. It’s the difference between life and death, success and failure, and whether we thrive or have problems that keep us stuck. In fact, it's the most important role in humanity.

This is especially true as dads and business owners. We have to lead our families. Our teams. And everyone we can influence in some way.

But leadership’s hard. It’s one of the toughest “skills” to learn. Especially if you’re not a natural leader.

That’s why I invited Dr. Nate Salah, a doctor of leadership on today’s show. Despite being a doctor of leadership, he never considered himself a natural leader. And it wasn’t until he found a mentor that he honed his leadership skills.

In this episode, you’ll discover how to become a better leader (even if you’re not a natural leader), why leadership is the most important role in humanity, and how becoming a better leader unlocks more business growth than anything else you can do.

Listen now.

Show highlights include:

  • Why striving for work-life balance can actually make you feel less fulfilled in both (3:54)
  • Is your life off track right now? Here’s why finding your faith can get it back on track (even if you’ve never stepped foot in a church before) (5:12)
  • How to prevent getting divorced (even if your marriage is on shaky grounds) (5:50)
  • The “feedback, not failure” mindset tweak that prevents you from beating yourself up when you make a mistake (11:13)
  • How thinking more like a one-year-old baby helps you reach your wildest goals in less time (11:23)
  • Why fear is the #1 culprit behind your business not scaling as fast as you want (and why putting a timeframe on your plan is the anecdote) (16:22)
  • How ignoring your weaknesses instead of trying to improve them will grow your business faster than a speeding bullet (19:07)
  • A doctor of leadership’s definition of leadership (and how understanding this could turn you into Steve Jobs, Milton Hershey, or Walt Disney) (26:51)
  • The insidious way isolation will crush your business goals (even if it’s responsible for growing your business to where it is today) (29:26)

You never stop being a dad.

But as your business becomes more stressful and demanding, you’re more likely to put your family on the backburner before your business.

Today’s guest, Ioannis Gratsinopoulos, dad and pastoral coach, made this same exact mistake early in his career. His business demanded so much of his attention that he missed out on the most precious years of his son’s life.

Ioannis helps ambitious men grow their businesses without sacrificing their family time, so they don’t make the same mistakes he did.

In this episode, Ioannis shares how to grow your business without sacrificing your family time. Why having your spouse as your trusted advisor helps you keep balance between your career and family. And how to become a better leader—both at home, and in your business.

Listen now.

Show highlights include:

  • The “Retooling” trick for figuring out the best solution to your complex business problems and scaling your business to the next level (3:20)
  • Why the best leaders are often the worst cultivators of team culture (and how to fix this) (4:53)
  • How to figure out what God’s true purpose for your life and business is in record time (9:14)
  • The “Church is a business” mindset shift for using your faith to grow your business (even if you’re in an unrelated industry) (10:20)
  • How giving your spouse a clearly defined role in your business unlocks faster growth (without sabotaging your family life or ending in divorce) (15:40)
  • The “sell it to your spouse” secret for determining if a new business idea will make money or not in 30 seconds (or less) (18:29)

This is a first for us.  We chat with Jorge Hernandez who is an entrepreneur and real estate investor with his wife.  OK, that sounds mainstream.  But, Jorge spent over 20 years travelling the world as a professional break dancer in a ministry program for Christ.  This is where he met his wife in Brazil, and she is also a professional dancer. They decided that the next chapter of their lives was in real estate and that they would settle in Kansas City, Missouri.  Jorge explains that jump from Brazil to the Midwest in the US. Jorge and his wife have two young children who already share their love for real estate and rehabs.  Hilarious that they are getting design and rehab ideas from 6 and 8 year old kids. Steve starts with an accounting degree to get that piece of paper that made his mother happy. How many of us have done that? Steve never worked a day of accounting but went straight into real estate and built his successful real estate career using the referral method. That involved giving clients very personalized gifts. Other agents where interested in this, but said that they did not have the time to do it. Bang, a new business was born.
Steve started Appreciation Advocate to provide business people and sales people with a very personalized gift and appreciation program.
Steve talks about building a business and using his values to stay balanced. "When your values are clear your decisions are easy." I love his description of Purposeless Appointments when filling your calendar. This is both business and personal and I think we can all relate.

Hank is a husband, a father of three and a high energy business and results coach. And, he also has two exchange students that he and his wife host. So we will consider this as having five kids.
Hank and his wife developed a three year plan where Hank would "give away his life" to intentionally be out of balance and focus fully on building their business. Three years and 600 flights later Hank hit the wall, returned to his balanced life and has built a tremendous future with his wife and kids.

Dustin Hoog and R. J. Campbell talk with Cedrick Webb, the coolest man in Missouri. If you don't believe me, just ask Google "who is the coolest man in Missouri"?

Cedrick is a husband, a father to two of his own children while also taking two teenage nephews into his home as well. This is all while balancing the building of Smart Digital, a growing top notch digital media company.

Cedrick shares his life story from growing up in a less than ideal or privileged household to breaking the chain of poverty by becoming a collegiate scholarship athlete. After a successful career in corporate America Cedrick launched Smart Digital, on day one of a global pandemic. Just another hurdle to get over.

There are real lessons on Fatherhood and Brotherhood in this interview. Cedrick details growing up without a father figure and how he learned what "he just knew that he needed to know" on his own. Cedrick passed along this nugget, "You need to understand what you don't want to be before deciding what you do want to be".

And Cedrick's telling of how he developed the brotherhood that he knew he was missing as he built his business is out of the box genius.

Cedrick is building his business with two ideals, to make every one that he works with better and to give back. This is evident through the Hero Makers scholarship fund that he has started.

You can find Cedrick's company Smart Digital at SmartDigitalTeam.com.
Cedrick can be reached at his website CedrickWebb.com.

Dustin Hoog and R. J. Campbell talk with Andrew Simila. Andrew is a husband and father all the while balancing his life as an executive coach and professional speaker. Andrew, his wife and three young children (ages 6, 4 and 2) get to spend their very outdoor centered life in southern California. In Andrews words, he and his wife have chosen to build careers around their lives instead of lives around their careers.

There is a real lesson in commitment to a goal in this conversation. Andrew tells a great story of asking his now wife out 12 times over a year and a half before she finally said yes.

Andrew provides a true coaching moment when he speaks about "New" versus "Better". This will really give you something to think about.

You can reach Andrew through Novus Global where he is an executive coach. Dustin and RJ joke that Andrew has the lightest internet presence of anyone they have met. So don't try to reach Andrew through Facebook or Instagram.

Join Dustin Hoog and R. J. Campbell as they discuss pillar #6, Business.  This seems like the most important aspect of our life, but they have it as the sixth and least important of the pillars.  How can that be?  This is often the most critical part of our lives.  Listen to find out.

What a special episode. For all of you fans of Top Gun and Top Gun 2, Maverick, Dustin Hoog and R. J. Campbell get the opportunity to interview a real Navy Fighter Pilot.

Listen as Dustin and R. J. spend some time talking about the six pillars and how those are balanced by a husband and father who spends large amounts of time away from his family as he flies an F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet for the US Navy.

Dustin and R. J. touch on most of the pillars during this interview. But the one that hits home is how Brotherhood means something entirely different to a person who is literally relying on his brothers for his life.

Dustin and R. J. interview Lieutenant Rich "Dick Soup" Campbell. Soup is a husband and father, he is a brother and a son, and he spends his days flying an F/A-18E Super Hornet off of an aircraft carrier as part of squadron VFA-83, the Rampagers.

Make sure to stick around until the end as Dustin and R. J. get to ask Soup questions that people sent to them, things they always wanted to ask a fighter pilot.

As a reminder, the six pillars are: Faith, Health, Marriage, Fatherhood, Brotherhood and Work/Business.
