How To Say 'NO' Like Socrates
In today's fast-paced world, where societal pressures and expectations often dictate our actions, maintaining integrity and asserting ourselves with confidence can be challenging.
However, by drawing inspiration from the teachings of ancient philosophers like Socrates, we can learn valuable lessons on the art of saying "NO" authentically and reclaiming our power in challenging situations.
The Wisdom of Socrates.
Socrates, the renowned ancient Greek philosopher, is celebrated for his unwavering commitment to truth and integrity, even in the face of adversity.
His refusal to compromise his beliefs, as evidenced by his decision to drink hemlock rather than recant his teachings, serves as a timeless example of moral courage and ethical fortitude.
Asserting Yourself with Confidence.
Assertiveness is a key component of self-esteem and personal empowerment. By learning how to assert ourselves with confidence and clarity, we can effectively communicate our boundaries and preferences to others, thereby safeguarding our integrity and well-being.
Socrates' unyielding stance against societal pressures reminds us of the importance of standing firm in our convictions and refusing to acquiesce to unreasonable demands.
Practical Strategies for Saying "NO".
Saying "NO" authentically requires practice and self-awareness. Here are some practical strategies inspired by Socrates' teachings:
For example, "I appreciate your invitation, but I've already committed to other priorities."
Personal Reflection.
As a Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, and Life Coach, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of refusing to compromise one's integrity.
In my journey, I've encountered moments when I've been asked to betray my values or sacrifice my authenticity for the sake of conformity.
However, by drawing inspiration from Socrates' example and embracing the principles of assertiveness and self-respect, I've learned to navigate these challenges with grace and integrity.
Embrace Your Power to Say "NO"
In conclusion, embracing the wisdom of Socrates can empower you to assert yourself with integrity and authenticity in all areas of your life.
By practising assertiveness and honouring your values, you can reclaim your power to say "NO" authentically and live with purpose and integrity.
Remember, your voice matters, and you have the power to shape your own destiny.
So, channel your inner Socrates, stand firm in your convictions, and embrace the freedom that comes from living with integrity.

How Counselling Helped Theseus Defeat The Minotaur
In the ancient city of Athens, there lived a young hero named Theseus, destined for greatness but unsure of his path.
As he prepared to embark on a perilous journey to defeat the monstrous Minotaur lurking within the labyrinth of Crete, Theseus sought guidance from a wise mentor, the renowned Athenian statesman and philosopher, Solon.
Solon, known for his wisdom and insight, welcomed Theseus into his home and listened intently as the young hero shared his doubts and fears about the daunting task ahead.
With compassion and clarity, Solon offered Theseus sage advice and timeless wisdom to help him navigate the challenges that lay ahead.
Inspired by Solon's words of encouragement, Theseus embarked on his journey with newfound confidence and determination.
For him, something had changed internally.
He now believed in himself!
Armed not only with his sword and shield but also with the wisdom of his mentor, he navigated the twists and turns of the labyrinth with purpose and resolve.
As he confronted the Minotaur in the heart of the maze, Theseus drew upon the lessons imparted to him by Solon, facing the fearsome creature with courage and cunning.
In the end, it was not just brute strength that ensured Theseus's victory but also the wisdom and guidance he received from his mentor.
Returning triumphant to Athens, Theseus honoured Solon as not only a mentor but also a friend and counsellor who had played a pivotal role in his journey to heroism.
And so, the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur became not just a tale of bravery and adventure but also a testament to the transformative power of receiving wise counsel and mentorship.
As we reflect on the story of Theseus and Solon, we are reminded of the importance of seeking guidance and wisdom from those who have walked the path before us.
Through counselling, life coaching, and mentorship, we can navigate the labyrinth of life with confidence and clarity, drawing upon the lessons of the past to forge a brighter future.
Join me as we delve into the timeless wisdom of Greek mythology and uncover the secrets to living a life of purpose, courage, and fulfilment.

The 10 Monkeys - A New Therapy Book For Children. As an online Counsellor, Hypnotherapist and Life Coach in the UK, helping those with emotional or psychological problems is my day-to-day role. My latest project, which is very close to my heart, is specifically aimed at helping children with their emotions too, in the form of therapeutic books that contain life lessons and coping strategies. The series of books follows this theme - There is a character that either has an existing issue or a new issue, and it is impacting them emotionally or psychologically. By sharing this issue with another, they discover help and support is never too far away, and also possible answers as well. Within the books are 'therapy-style questions' for the parent/adult caregiver and child to pause and explore the emotions the character may be feeling in that moment. It also encourages the reader to consider possible solutions or answers that would assist the character. Join me in this video as I introduce my latest therapy book for children, 'The 10 Monkeys'. This heartwarming story follows Charlie, a young monkey who is afraid of heights. He discloses this to his mother who provides a suggestion - To enlist the help of the ten best climbers in the troop to share their skills with him and help him overcome his fear. These ten monkeys become mentors for young Charlie on his journey of exploration. Through engaging storytelling and interactive therapy-style questions, children are encouraged to explore their own emotions and find solutions to their challenges. I'll also share insights into the therapeutic techniques used in the book and how it can benefit young readers aged 6-10. The 10 Monkeys is also educational as it contains ten fascinating facts about monkeys at the end of the book. 'The 10 Monkeys' is now available on Amazon, providing a valuable resource for children and families navigating fears and anxieties. Here are the Amazon links:🔗 UK Amazon Link 🔗 US Amazon Link I also provide instructions on how to 'follow' me on Amazon, so you get automatically notified when I release new books within this series. 👉 Time Stamps:00:00 - Introduction 00:36 - The Idea01:10 - The Plot03:07 - Therapy Style Questions04:16 - How To 'Follow' Me On Amazon04:46 - Why I Am Doing ThisMy Best Wishes, James 🔗 Some other links you may find helpful:To book the FREE 30-minute Consultation, click HERE📚 A Therapy Book For Children - The Squirrel That Lost Its Nut. As a Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, and Life Coach, I help clients find solutions to their problems, or more accurately, I help equip clients with tools so they become a better and more capable version of themselves.
It occurred to me that it would be a great idea if I could help children develop these tools too, so I put my mind to work on how I could best do that.
I am pleased to announce that I have written a series of children's books (29 so far), which all follow a certain theme.
The main characters each have a problem that is either happening to them or around them. Either alone or with the help of others, they seek out a way to move forward and overcome the obstacle that is in their way.
In these books, I also include therapeutic questions for the story to pause and for the reader to explore what emotions the character in the book might be feeling at that moment, and what possible things or options they have available to them.
I will be releasing a new book every six weeks, and the illustrations are really beautiful too.
The first of the 29 books are now available on Amazon, and is called,'The Squirrel That Lost Its Nut'.
This enchanting children's book invites young readers (ages 6-10) to join an excitable Grey Squirrel on an emotional rollercoaster through the woods. Faced with the challenge of a forgotten nut burial spot, the squirrel learns valuable lessons in patience, composure, and teamwork with the guidance of a wise Owl.
Why I Wrote It:As a therapist, I crafted this story to help children navigate the complex landscape of emotions and problem-solving.
The narrative not only engages young minds but subtly introduces therapeutic insights. The excitement, frustration, and joy experienced by our furry friend become stepping stones for children to become resilient problem solvers.
Therapeutic Elements:"The Squirrel That Lost Its Nut" is more than a bedtime story—it's a tool for parents and caregivers to spark conversations about emotions. By weaving therapeutic principles into the whimsical narrative, the book aims to guide children in developing crucial problem-solving skills.
Bonus: 10 Fascinating Squirrel Facts:As an added treat, the book concludes with ten intriguing facts about squirrels. This bonus section not only enhances the educational value, but also deepens the connection between young readers and the charming woodland characters.

If you do a lot of negative self-talk to yourself, about yourself, I implore you to stop this habit immediately. You see, words are powerful, and so are thoughts. No one else needs to put you down, because you do this all by yourself. Now this does not mean you live in denial. For example, if you have gained a few pounds and want to lose weight, you should still say to yourself, 'Hey, I've put on a few pounds. It's time to trim down a little". This is a very different response to, "I'm so disgusting. I am pathetic". See the difference? So please, please, please, do not harm yourself in this way or do this to yourself. I also talk about probably the first time I became aware of this issue too when I was a small boy, and it left a lasting impression. In life, we often find ourselves facing challenges and uncertainties. It's natural to seek answers and resolutions, but what if the key to these solutions lies within us? In this video I talk about the remarkable story concerning a young man called Milton Erickson, who later became a famous hypnotherapist. Milton grew up on a farm, and one day a horse walked into their farmyard. No-one, including Milton knew who owned the horse, or where it had come from. His father instructed Milton to return the horse to its owner. Milton was unclear exactly how to do this, but led the horse out onto the road. After looking both ways, it set off on a slow pace and Milton followed. A short while later The horse stopped to graze, but Milton drew its attention back to the road. This happened time and time again; it stopping to graze and Milton drawing its attention back to the road.Eventually, and after many miles later, the horse walked into a farmyard Milton had never visited before. The farmer was present, realised it was his horse, and after thanking Milton asked him where he had found it. He explained that it had wandered into their farmyard many miles away. The farmer was amazed at this asked Milton how he knew where to bring the horse. Milton thought for a moment before replying, "I didn't know, but the horse knew. All I had to do was keep its focus on the road". I truly believe we all have the answers we need within us, an 'inner wisdom' if you like, and if we 'stay on our road', it reveals this wisdom to us. I also believe it is this 'not' staying on the road that causes such confusion, anxiety, stress and procrastination too. After all, it's pretty easy to become distracted and lose our way, without even realising we have done so. As a counsellor, hypnotherapist and life coach, it is my job to help you 'stay on the road', so you find your answers too. When we have our answers, even though it may still be difficult to act on them, we at least have a direction to take, a road map, or a compass bearing. Sometimes, we all need a helping hand to discover what we know. If this resonates with you, and you are feeling you have 'lost your way' or are 'off track', perhaps you would benefit with a helping hand to get you back on the right path, or even a new path! This can be with mindset, a bad habit, an emotional issue, stress, anxiety, a need to start something or stop something (often it can be a little of both), a limiting belief, and more. I am reminded of a quote here that goes, "The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek". You know, we could explore this cave together, with torches to 'shine a light' on what is stopping you, and address it, so you can then move forward with confidence, free from it.What would that be like? #106- Making Tough Choices: Prioritising Your Well-Being
In our journey through life, we often encounter challenges and difficulties. Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where we've been dealing with a problem for far too long, just like the toothache I am presently experiencing.
This blog post is about the importance of making tough decisions to improve our lives.
Problem Identification:
Recognising our personal issues is the first step toward personal growth. Many individuals struggle with acknowledging their problems, unsure of how to address them.
The longer we put off addressing these issues, the more they can affect various areas of our lives.
Consequences of Inaction:
Procrastination and avoidance can have dire consequences.
Neglecting problems can lead to a cascade of negative impacts on our well-being and quality of life. It's vital to understand that the longer we wait, the harder it becomes to deal with the issue effectively.
Making Tough Choices:
I recently faced a difficult decision regarding my toothache. Although I don't want to have my tooth extracted, I recognise that it is the best decision for my long-term well-being.
If I do not do this, it will get worse, become more painful, and may even start to impact with other teeth or even my gums.
That 'not taking action' is just a path I am simply not willing to take.
Making such choices can be challenging, if it was easy it would not be a problem, but they are often necessary for personal growth and improvement.
Prioritising Long-Term Well-Being:
Prioritising long-term well-being is a fundamental aspect of personal development.
When we address our problems and make difficult decisions, we set ourselves on a path toward a better future. Remember, your well-being is worth the effort and discomfort in the short term.
Conclusion:
In summary, recognising and addressing personal issues is a crucial step in personal growth.
Making tough choices, despite initial apprehension, can lead to a brighter future and a higher quality of life.
Don't let problems fester; take action today for a better tomorrow.
If you have been dealing with a problem, and it is impacting various aspects of your life, remember that you have the power to make a change.
It all starts with acknowledging the issue and taking that first step towards a solution.
If you have a tough decision to make, and you are finding yourself feeling 'stuck', perhaps working together as a team would assist you?
If this interests you, please click on this LINK to book a free 30-minute consultation.
I hope this blog post provides you with valuable insights and encourages you to prioritise your well-being.

What Is Unconditional Positive Regard?
Unconditional Positive Regard (or UPR for short) was created by Carl Rogers. He was an American psychologist and one of the founders of 'Humanistic Psychology'.
In this episode, I talk about his UPR approach, and how if you implement this concept into your life, how you view things will change.
You will probably find yourself:
👉 Feeling calmer,
👉 Having more empathy,
👉 Being more considerate,
👉 Appreciating what you do have (and more).
Truly, it is an amazing concept to embrace.
I hope you like this one.

As a counsellor, hypnotherapist, and life coach, I am often curious as to what goals clients are setting or have set themselves.
For some, it is many, whereas for others that space is very vague.
Goal setting is such a huge area of exploration, and I believe it really is crucial for our own mental health.
Without a goal, we drift, going from day to day without any progress, like a ship without a captain.
In this episode, I talk about the 3D's regarding goal setting, what this means, give examples, and more.
I hope you enjoy this one.

A Tip For Creating Success.
Sometimes, the best tips are pretty simple, and this podcast episode is definitely in that category.
It is about creating an environment (by you doing a particular thing in a specific way), which exponentially increases your chance of success.
Depending on what you really desire, this could possibly be life-changing too.
Plus, as this is a simple tip, the two tools you will need I can guarantee you have around your home as well.
Do not let the simplicity of this fool you either. Its simplicity is actually its genius.
I hope you like this episode. It's a quick tip, in a short podcast episode, to help you succeed.
That's a win-win; if possible, always go for the win-win.

How To Turn On Your Superpower.
You have a superpower within you and I want to help you 'turn it on'.
But HOW?
I have created a journal to achieve this, but it is a journal with a twist.
The 1-minute, 365-Day Appreciation Journal.
You get rid of the dark by turning on the light. You get rid of the cold by turning on the heating. You get rid of negative thoughts by turning on your appreciation.
With just one minute each day, you can reflect on the good things in your life and express appreciation for them, leading to a whole host of benefits, like improved mood, better relationships, reduced stress and anxiety, and a greater sense of meaning and purpose.
It's like finding a compass that points you in the right direction - suddenly, you have a sense of purpose and clarity.
That's where The 1-Minute Appreciation Journal comes in.
It's like a little map that helps you navigate your gratitude journey, one day at a time. It is also filled with prompts and exercises that encourage you to focus on the good things in your life, like shining a flashlight on the things that bring you joy.
And just like any good map, your journal also has helpful guides showing you the way. Also included is video content that walks you through the journaling process and gives you tips on how to make gratitude a daily habit.
Think of it like a toolkit that helps you build a gratitude practice - with each day, you're laying a brick on the foundation of a more positive, fulfilling life.
It's like a little treasure chest of gratitude that you can open each day, filled with inspiring quotes, and tips on how to live a more grateful life.

As an online Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, and Life-Coach, goal setting is something that features a lot in my client work.
Many want to either stop something or start something, sometimes it is both.
I would really encourage you to set yourself goals, either personal or professional, and then break the goal down into bitesize chunks so it becomes doable.
I also believe having a goal is great for your mental health too, as it gives you something to strive for, to head towards, and the opportunity for internal growth too.

Why Letting Go Is Good For Your Mental Health.
As a Counsellor, Life Coach, and Hypnotherapist a phrase I hear myself using a lot is, 'Let Go Or Get Dragged Along'.
That is the theme of this podcast episode - The power of 'letting go', and it truly is a thing that if you embrace it fully, can change your life.
There can be many reasons why you should (or could) 'let go' of something. Maybe it could be a pain you have felt about a situation, a grudge you are holding, or a limiting belief about yourself. There are many more.
When you 'release' yourself from it, it loses its power over you, and you then have power over it, and there is a big difference in that.
If you are aware of wanting to 'let go' of something but feel like you need some help with that, click on the LINK to book a free 30-minute consultation with me.
We can talk it through, see if we are a good fit for each other and if so, start to tackle this together.

In my own private practice as a Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Life Coach, and Hypnotherapy Supervisor, decisions play a big part.
Generally, clients want to start something or stop something, sometimes it's a little bit of both.
Well, I had to make a big decision myself recently. In this podcast, I talk about that, including the unexpected (and unwanted) thoughts that came up for me, and how I addressed them.
I hope this video helps you with your own decisions.

What Does Seal Rescue And Therapy Have In Common?
As a Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Life Coach and Hypnotherapy Supervisor, I often hear about lots of difficult issues my clients are facing. Some initially feel lost, some feel angry, some frustrated, and some feel wounded by the things they have experienced, or are still experiencing right now.
There is a way out of this, and therapy is an excellent tool to facilitate it.
So you may be wondering what does this have to do with seal rescue. No, that is not a clickbait title.
I have been watching a channel on YouTube called 'Ocean Conservation Namibia' (click HERE to check it out). It is a group of volunteers who help seals that have been entangled in debris, predominantly man-made. This can be fishing line, rope, elastic or even illegal fishing nets!
They are a non-profit organisation, but you can donate on their Youtube page to help them continue the excellent work they do.
These volunteers are truly dedicated to rescuing injured seals and some have awful scars. Their tireless efforts bring hope and save lives.
It occurred to me that just as these volunteers lend their support, therapy can provide a similar lifeline. It offers a safe space to address emotional wounds, guiding individuals towards healing and a renewed sense of well-being.
The volunteers meticulously remove the entangled debris, freeing the seals from pain and danger. Likewise, therapy helps untangle the knots of emotional distress, fostering resilience and personal growth.
Through therapy, we navigate the debris of past experiences, shedding light on the scars that may hold us back. It's a journey of self-discovery, where we can find healing, understanding, and the strength to move forward.
If you find yourself in need of support and guidance, I truly encourage you to consider seeking therapy. Together, we can explore the depths of your emotions, untangle the complexities, and embark on a transformative path towards your healing.
If this sounds like something that you would like to explore, you can book a free 30-minute consultation with me by clicking on this LINK, whether that be for counselling, hypnotherapy, life coaching or even hypnotherapy supervision.
I hope you like this episode.

Is this the secret to overcoming Procrastination?
Are you tired of procrastinating and struggling to get things done? If so, you're not alone. Procrastination can be a major obstacle to achieving our goals and can leave us feeling frustrated and unproductive.
But there is a simple technique that can help you overcome procrastination and take action towards your goals. It's called the "5-second rule," also known as the "54321" technique, and it was popularised by motivational speaker and author Mel Robbins.
Here's how it works: when you want to do something - whether it's going to the gym, starting a new project, or even just getting out of bed in the morning - you simply count down from five to one, and when you reach one, you take action.
By counting down and committing to taking action once you reach one, you're interrupting the cycle of procrastination and giving yourself a clear signal that it's time to get moving. And once you start taking action, you'll often find that it's easier to keep going than it was to get started.
Whether you're a chronic procrastinator or just looking for a simple way to get more done, this technique can help you overcome inertia and take action towards your goals, thanks to Mel Robbins' insights and research.
So why not give it a try and see how it works for you?
If the book Mel Robbins wrote about this technique appeals, click HERE for the Amazon link.

Finding Strength in Seeking Help: Drew Barrymore's Mental Health Journey.
Drew Barrymore is a household name, but few people know the personal struggles she has faced throughout her life.
Growing up in the public eye, Drew experienced substance abuse, a tumultuous family life, and mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety.
Drew's journey to recovery started when she was only 13 years old when she was placed in a mental institution.
In a 2014 interview with People magazine, Drew spoke about this experience, saying, "I was in there for a year and a half. I was very rebellious. I started smoking cigarettes when I was nine, and I think I stole my first car when I was 12. I was going to clubs and not going to school and stealing my mom's car and, you know, I was out of control."
During her time in the institution, Drew received therapy and support from professionals who helped her confront her demons and start the healing process.
As she stated in a 2020 interview with Glamour, "I was really scared and really young, but I wanted to get better. And that was such a profound moment of my life."
After leaving the institution, Drew continued to work on her recovery and started therapy sessions with a new therapist. In a 2016 interview with InStyle, she shared, "I love therapy. I'm in therapy all the time... I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy."
Through therapy, Drew learned to confront her emotions, set boundaries, and cultivate healthy habits. As she stated in the same InStyle interview, "I'm very disciplined about therapy and about finding new ways of growth and healing."
Drew's journey to recovery hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it. She has used her experiences to inspire others and advocate for mental health awareness. In a 2018 interview with Today, she shared, "I think that everyone's life journey is about finding that courage and finding that strength to keep moving forward, and to keep acknowledging that there's stuff to work on and there's stuff to face."
Drew Barrymore's story is a powerful reminder that no matter what challenges you may face, there is hope for healing and growth.
Seeking therapy can be a vital tool in your journey towards mental and emotional wellness, just as it has been for Drew.
If you're ready to start or continue your own journey to recovery, I encourage you to book a therapy session with me. As a counsellor, hypnotherapist and life-coach I can provide a safe and supportive space for you to work through your challenges and achieve your goals.

An Unusual Sight!
Recently, I was on a train travelling into London Victoria, when something unusual caught my eye. Me being me, I do like to go down the rabbit hole with my own thoughts, and the memory of it has stayed with me.
You see, there was a lesson for me to learn in that event, and it was a good one too, so I thought I would share it with you too.
I hope you like this episode.
Best wishes,
James

David Goggins And The Cookie Jar.
In this podcast episode, I talk about a technique created by David Goggins which he calls 'The Cookie Jar', and it is extremely powerful.
David Goggins is the only U.S. soldier who has undergone Navy Seal, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller Training.
His 'Cookie Jar' technique helps you defeat that negative voice that we all have at times, and David Goggins takes no prisoners with it either.
For more background on David Goggins, he has also written two books.
His first book (which I have) is called 'Can't Hurt Me'. This is about his early life and the things that began to forge his willpower.
Click Here for the Amazon link for it.
His second book is called 'Never Finished', which I have not yet read, but it is definitely on my list.
Click Here to check it out on Amazon, and for completeness, Here is his Wikipedia page.
If you would like help creating your own 'Cookie Jar', here is the LINKon how to get in touch with me.

#79 - Tune In And Tune Out
We all operate on frequencies, either consciously or unconsciously, and these 'frequencies' can either be positive or negative.
If you are unconsciously tuning into a negative frequency, you will feel .......... negative.
Whereas if you are tuning into a positive frequency, you will feel positive.
Yes, I know that is very obvious, yet so many do not actively decide what they are tuning into, to their detriment.
So in this podcast episode, I talk about getting your control back regarding your frequencies, tuning into what you want, AND tuning out of what you need to tune out.
That becomes a win-win, and if you are a regular listener on here you will know how I do like a win-win.
I hope you like this episode.
Best wishes,
James

What is Shadow Therapy?
Shadow Therapy, sometimes called'Shadow Self'or 'Shadow Work', is a concept by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung.
Jung believed that we all have a Shadow Self, a part of us that we keep locked away or hidden, consciously or unconsciously, and for a variety of reasons too.
Shadow Therapy is when a client is encouraged to look at this, understand why it is there, get clarity of where it comes from, and potentially transform it into something else.
It is a fascinating form of therapy.

#53 - The Ignorant Barrister
In this weeks podcast episode of Right Your Own Story, I talk about an incident that took place many years ago when I was fairly new in the police.
I was at court for a short hearing of a case, regarding some administration that was required, and was speaking to the barrier outside the courtroom. He seemed pretty friendly and down to earth and all was well, until we went into court.
Gone was the happy chappy with the soft midlands accent. Instead, this arrogant individual had suddenly appeared, and the phrase 'having a plum in their mouth' finally made sense to me.
The courtroom doors clearly contained some unknown magical quality that could change a persons entire persona!
He then tried to embarrass me in front of the judge. It hugely backfired on him, and he was quite upset at this.
As is quite normal for me, there was lesson to be learned here, and it's a valuable one too, so I thought I'd share it with you.

#51 - Outwitting The Devil - Book Review
In this episode of Right Your Own Story I give a book review on the classic 'Outwitting The Devil', by Napoleon Hill.
We have all had hopes, dreams, wishes and aspirations as children, but as we get older we perhaps lost our way with these, maybe even talked ourselves out of them as 'just fantasies', or even let the idea or wish go completely.
These can things be things like something we wanted to do or achieve as we got older, perhaps a career we would have liked, or maybe something else that we wanted to be, do, or have in our lives.
The sad fact is less than 5% of people go on to actually achieve their goals, their dreams or their desires.
In the book, Hill is having a dialogue with the Devil. He is specifically asking if the Devil has any part to play in this.
The Devils answer is chillingly clear - YES. ALWAYS, AND EVERY SINGLE TIME TOO!
Hill presses him to reveal (in detail) how, why, and more importantly, how to escape this trap.
As per the deal, the Devil reluctantly reveals his deepest darkest methods.
It is a truly fascinating read.
After writing the book, Hill had a genuine fear about releasing it, how it would be received, and its repercussions too, so he asked his wife to release it after his death. She agreed, but then she also had the same fear, so asked Hill's son to release it after her own death.
The son agreed, and kept his promise.
So, seventy long years after it was written, It was finally published.
It was then immediately banned!
This made it incredibly popular, and later still when the ban was lifted, it became an international best seller.
It is packed with 'life lessons' that are as relevant today as when it was written, and I would highly recommend you add it to your library.
Here is the Amazon link for it.

#49 - The Three Peaks
Many years ago I was in the Territorial Army, and for charity we climbed the Three Peaks in 24 hours. The Three Peaks are the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales. It was both exhausting and amazing, and the memory of it will stay with me forever.
Like many things in life, there are lessons to be learned in the things that we do (and do 'not' do), that we can take into other areas of our lives.
So, what lessons did I learn? - LOTS!
Things like, just keep going, see where the next footstep is being placed, glance at the top now and again to make sure you are on track, remember to catch your breath but don't stop completely, the planning shouldn't be overlooked, practice if you can etc.
The list could really go on and on.
You may not be looking to conquer mountains, but with your own goals, how is that going for you? Are you crushing it, or are you being crushed?
There is a way for you to succeed.
With my clients, I help them transition from where they are, to where they want to get to, whether that be emotionally, physically or psychologically. They achieve this by planning the plan, and then working the plan, both consciously and subconsciously. It's like going for a goal whilst on steroids, except it's completely natural, and you just 'tune in' to your power.
It is one of the many reasons I love what I do. Seeing a client do what they previously thought impossible is amazing.
If you would like to see if I can help you 'tune in' to YOUR power, why not book a free 30-minute zoom consultation with me. It's RISK-FREE, so you have nothing to lose (except 30 minutes), and it could really be the start of starting something amazing you then go on to achieve.

#48 - Man's Search For MeaningIn this weeks podcast episode I talk about Viktor Frankl, a Jewish Austrian neurologist, philosopher, writer and Holocaust survivor.
Born in 1905, he developed an interest in psychology whilst at school. He later communicated frequently with Sigmund Freud, but they fell out of favour with each other when he challenged some of Freud's concepts.
He specialised in Depression and Suicide, particularly the increasing suicide rate amongst students. He then went on to specialise working with suicidal women.
In 1940, he was head of the neurology department at Rothschild Hospital.
In 1942, everything changed for him.
He and his family were was sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. His father aged 81, died of starvation and pneumonia.
In 1944, he and his remaining family were sent to Auschwitz. His mother and brother were killed in the gas chambers, and his wife died of Typhus whilst in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. His lifes work on manuscript was also taken and destroyed, as well as his wedding ring.
Everything that could be taken from him was taken, except one very important thing - What he allowed himself to think.
Victor Frankl kept this place secure, like the black box within an aeroplane. He decided that nothing was going to penetrate this sacred place within himself, and he credits this alone for his survival.
He also began to notice a pattern with the other prisoners, and in particular, he could tell when they had given up on life itself. He witnessed many die, either at the hands of another, or when they themselves 'let go' of living.
I cannot even begin to fathom what that must have been like for him.
After the war, he wrote an amazing book called Man's Search For Meaning. The first half of the book is about his experiences in the concentration camps he was sent. The second half of the book is about his life after this, and it rightly became an international best seller.
Here is an Amazon link for his book, and I would highly recommend it for a variety of reasons. It is a very powerful and emotional read. It also shows how he faced the worst things you could possibly imagine, yet keep a part of himself safe, out of reach to others who would do him harm, and maintained that control within himself despite what was going on outside.
A lesson, I would suggest, we could all benefit from from increasing.
He was truly an amazing man.
He died in 1997, and is buried in the Jewish section of Vienna Central Cemetery.
I hope you enjoy this episode

James

Podcast #47 - Lessons We Can Learn From Hercules
If your only knowledge of Hercules is from the Disney movie in 1997, there are a lot of details missing.
Hercules (or Heracles) had a pretty miserable life. His father (Zeus) was always visiting Earth, (often in disguise), and having sex with whoever he wanted. He fathered numerous children and understandably he was infuriating his wife Hera, who also happened to be his twin sister!
Hera, infuriated by yet another illegitimate offspring by Zeus, decided to make life a living hell for Hercules. She even tried to have him killed whilst he was still a child!
Hercules grew up to be incredibly strong, and despite a few early setbacks (ie killing his music teacher), he got on with his life.
As an adult, he got married and had children. Life was pretty good, and this angered Hera again. She was far from 'letting it go'.
One day as he returned home he noticed his front door had been kicked off. Upon entering his family where nowhere to be seen. Instead, he was approached by monsters. Hercules flew into a rage and killed them all.
Only then, Hera lifted her spell. Hercules realised he had in fact murdered his own family.
He was devastated with what he had done and sought advice from the Oracle of Delphi. She advised he give his services to the king as an act of penance, and only then would he be free from his punishment. Hercules agreed and these became the ten labours of Hercules. However, due to a breach in the rules, he actually ended up completing twelve.
Years later, Hercules was accidentally killed by his second wife, who then committed suicide when she realised what she had done.
You can probably see why Disney missed certain details out!
So, what lessons can we learn from Hercules?
Listen to this podcast episode to find out.
If Mythology interests you, I would recommend a book as a great starting point. It is called 'The Dictionary Of Mythology'. It is really comprehensive, super easy to read, and gives lots of detail too.

Inspirational People With Disabilities
In this weeks podcast episode I talk about people who overcame incredible disabilities to still go for their goals.
They didn't use them as an excuse NOT to do something. Instead, they made them a reason to rise anyway, (and the cream always rises to the top).
It includes a boxer, musicians, actors, an author, and a personal friend who when faced with his own son's disability (Bilateral Anophthalmia - being born without eyes), and then created a global charity for other parents in the same position. He was later awarded an MBE for his services, and his son Toby is amazing.
Here is a link to the charity if you would like to check it out.
So, what disability do you NOT have, yet are still not going for your goals or dreams?
Does that bother you, make you feel disgruntled, has been added to a very far and distant 'wish list', or even considered a pipe dream?
What about if you went for it instead, and had someone cheering you on, helping you really focus on the reasons why you should and can do this? What would that feel like to achieve it? Would you feel PRIDE, ACCOMPLISHMENT, PLEASURE, SATISFACTION or something else?
If so, then ACTION is required!
If you are serious about this and it's the 'start that is stopping you', book a free consultation with me right now and see if I can help you begin that journey.
You ARE worth it you know!
Here is thelink to reach out.
Let's do this!

12 reasons to see a counsellor.
Speaking to a counsellor can be life changing. They are impartial, professional, and can help you say what you are really thinking and feeling without judgement.
In this podcast episode I go into more detail about this, and give 12 reasons why you should definitely consider it.
I also mention why speaking to a friend or family member may NOT be the best choice, and an unexpected conversation I had that took place in a Police interview.
There are many more than just 12 reasons, but here are just a few of them:
Trauma (Past or Present)
Bereavement or Loss
Relationship therapy
Behavioural therapy
Depression
Anxiety, Stress and Health
Confidence
Intrusive Thoughts
Self Worth
Starting Something or Stopping Something (sometimes it is both)
Letting Go

Have you ever considered Hypnotherapy as an option to assist you, or have you written it off as a load of nonsense? Does it conjure up images of 'mind control', and a fear you may disclose bank details, PIN numbers, or even your deepest darkest secrets?
The truth is, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy is very real, extremely effective for a huge range of issues, including emotional, physical and psychological, and is also one of the quickest and kindest forms of therapy I know.
This episode is on 13 reasons why you should consider hypnotherapy to assist you moving forward, whilst letting go of the things that are holding you back. There are many more than just 13, so this is a very small sample in some of the ways it can help you.
Note - Number 13 is HUGE!
And for those that are superstitious about the number 13 being unlucky, yes Hypnotherapy can help with superstitions too.
If the backstory of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy interests you, I have written an ebook on the topic. Click HERE to access it.
If you would like to arrange a free, no-obligation 30-minute phone consultation and see if Hypnotherapy can help you, please click HERE.
I hope you enjoy this episode.

In this podcast episode of Right Your Own Story I give 11 reasons why you may need a Life Coach.
Here they are:
1. You are stressed - This is more than everyday stress.
2. You want to change, but don't know how - This can make you feel lost, and add to existing stress.
3. Your self-confidence / self-image is low. Until the self-image is changed, 'change' is held back.
4. You procrastinate or have self-destructive habits - This is a downward spiral that can lead to depression/anxiety.
5. You have a dream - But you hold yourself back from it, perhaps based on an inner voice speaking negatively to you.
6. You have money worries or fear - Until financial education takes place, it is likely to get worse. Note, I am not a financial advisor. This is more money strategies that you can adopt to improve your finacial situation quickly. Fear can also be very contagious, and financial fear can be enormous (and debilitating).
7. You want a different relationship - This can be with yourself, a partner, work or family/friends.
8. You need accountability - This is a huge one. An accountability aspect can make a huge difference in your life.
9. Your health is suffering - If this the case, it needs to be addressed immediately. If you health fails, you fail. Let's get you away from that issue.
10. Poor time management - When you learn techniques to organise your time better, you achieve results you previously thought impossible.
11, You are taking your stress out on others - This is hugely detrimental to those closest to you, especially children who may be present (watching and learning).
This is not an exhaustive list by any means. More a overview of possibilities that a life coach can help you in your own life.
Did you identify with any?
If you would like to see if life coaching is for you, please click on this link to be taken to a contact form. Fill out as much details as you feel relevant and we can arrange a free 30 minute consultation.

In this episode of Right Your Own Story, I talk about how Johnny Depp won his recent defamation case against Amber Heard.
I also talk about my own experience of working on domestic violence units and serious sexual assault teams, whilst in the police.
In this episode I also mention a YouTube channel called 'The Behaviour Panel'. They are four body language experts who have covered this defamation trial in detail, and are able to explain why Amber Heard's body language is in huge contradiction with what she actually says. It is quite revealing!
Legal Help
If you are looking to leave a relationship yourself, I would highly recommend a company called 'Divorce Solutions'. They help people navigate the legal maze and stop them making expensive mistakes. They also use their experience of the divorce process to find solutions to save you money. There are processes available to resolve these difficult situations without even involving a solicitor! They also offer a free consultation first. Here is their website
Therapeutic Help
For those looking at an option of therapeutic help, I have helped both couples and individuals with relationship issues, including break up. By discussing your feelings, I help you find solutions, awareness of yourself, whilst improving your own self-confidence going forward.

#41 - The 30 Causes Of Failure
In this episode of Right Your Own Story, I talk about the 30 Causes Of Failure, from the classic book 'Think and Grow Rich' by Napoleon Hill.
Napoleon Hill was tasked with seeing if there was an actual formula for why people succeeded, and also failed. He was introduced to the big players of the day who were considered successful. These included former presidents of America, Inventors, Railroad Executives, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison etc, to name but a few.
In his quest, he discovered something important.
There WAS a reason why people succeed (13 of them), but there was also a reason why people failed (30).
He wrote about this, and more, in his classic book, Think and Grow Rich, which became an international best seller.
The lessons in the book are as valid now as when it was first published in 1937.
In last weeks podcast episode, I spoke about the 13 Causes of Success (Click this link to listen to that episode), but this weeks episode is to discuss the reverse side of that particular coin - The 30 Causes of Failure.
So, here they are, all 30 of them:
**Note - Before you look at the list, perhaps think about a time when you attempted something, and it just didn't work OR, think of a certain person you know that failed at something, and see if you can identify some of the reasons.
AN UNFAVOURABLE HEREDITARY BACKGROUND
LACK OF A WELL DEFINED PURPOSE
LACK OF AMBITION
LACK OF SELF-DISCIPLINE
INSUFFICIENT EDUCATION
ILL HEALTH
POOR ENVIRONMENT DURING CHILDHOOD
PROCRASTINATION
LACK OF PERSISTENCE
NEGATIVE PERSONALITY
LACK OF A CONTROLLED SEXUAL URGE
DESIRE OF SOMETHING FOR NOTHING
LACK OF DECISION
ONE OR MORE OF THE SIX BASIC FEARS - POVERTY, CRITICISM, ILL HEALTH, LOSS OF LOVE, OLD AGE AND DEATH
WRONG SELECTION OF A MATE IN MARRIAGE
OVER CAUTION
WRONG SELECTION OF A MATE IN BUSINESS
SUPERSTITION OR PREJUDICE
WRONG SELECTION OF VOCATION
LACK OF CONCENTRATION OR EFFORT
INDISCRIMINATE SPENDING
LACK OF ENTHUSIASM
INTOLERANCE
INTEMPERANCE
INABILITY TO CO-OPERATE WITH OTHERS
POSSESSION OF POWER NOT EARNED
INTENTIONAL DISHONESTY
EGOTISM OR VANITY
GUESSING INSTEAD OF THINKING
LACK OF CAPITAL
Quite a list, is it not? Did you identify with it in any way? I know I did when I first learned about it, and that was not particularly pleasant to discover, but it was important, because then I could learn how to stop doing that.
For completeness, here are the 13 Causes for Success too:
DESIRE
FAITH
AUTO-SUGGESTION
SPECIALISED KNOWLEDGE
IMAGINATION
ORGANISED PLANNING
DECISION
PERSISTENCE
POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
MYSTERY OF SEX TRANSMUTATION
THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
THE BRAIN
THE SIXTH SENSE
I would highly recommend purchasing a copy of 'Think and Grow Rich', and adding it to your library. Here is the Amazon link for it.

In this episode of Right Your Own Story, I talk about the 13 Causes Of Success, from the classic book 'Think and Grow Rich' by Napoleon Hill.
Hill was tasked with seeing if there was a formula for success, and he found that there always was, and without exception!
To assist with what 'Success' actually means I find this definition helpful - The Progressive Realisation of a Worthy Ideal.
In easier to understand terms what this actually means, if you want to be, have, or do something, and you are working towards that goal or thing, then you are successful.
So, here are the 13 Reasons for Success
DESIRE
FAITH
AUTO-SUGGESTION
SPECIALISED KNOWLEDGE
IMAGINATION
ORGANISED PLANNING
DECISION
PERSISTENCE
POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
MYSTERY OF SEX TRANSMUTATION
THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
THE BRAIN
THE SIXTH SENSE
In the episode I also give clarity as to some of their meanings too, especially items 9 and 10!
I would highly recommend purchasing a copy of 'Think and Grow Rich', and adding it to your library. Here is the Amazon link for it.
I also talk about another book by Napoleon Hill called, 'Outwitting the Devil'. This was actually banned upon being published, (which of course made it very popular).
Upon the ban being lifted, it immediately became an international best seller, and is an excellent book in itself. Here is the Amazon link for that.
Hill also identified 30 reasons why people fail, so next weeks episode, I will be talking about that.
Make sure you subscribe to discover what they are (so you can then avoid them), and also be alerted of future episodes too.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about a very dark chapter in my life when I was sexually abused as a child.
I also disclose some of the surroundings and circumstances I had at home, my upbringing, my thoughts and feelings then and now, and how I believe a combination of things made me particularly vulnerable to the paedophile who began grooming me, and later went on to sexually abuse me.

In this podcast episode called '10 Ways to Stop Procrastination', I give some really easy practical things to do that help.
As a Professional Counsellor, Hypnotherapist and Life-Coach, procrastination and procrastinating are one of the main things I see clients really struggling with, the 'Should I/Shouldn't I', or 'Can I/Can't I', playing over and over on a continuous loop.
It is a serious trap that should (and can) be escaped from at all costs.
I have also found it is generally the 'start' that stops most people.
So here are Ten Ways To Stop Procrastination And Procrastinating, (with more clarity in the podcast episode itself):
1. Get emotionally involved with your 'WHY'.
2. Break down the steps to bite-size chunks.
3. Make a success list today of what you are going to achieve tomorrow.
4. Make an internal commitment with yourself.
5. Get an accountability partner.
6. Do the preparation in advance.
7. Get moving!
8. Enjoy the journey.
9. Journal your journey.
10. Repeat this particular Affirmation.
I also refer to another podcast episode regarding Affirmations, so here is the link for that as well.
If you would like to address your own procrastination, why not book a free consultation call with me by clicking this link?If we are a good fit, we can get a date in the diary and start to get you laser beamed with your own goals, without procrastination holding you back anymore, so you start to win. How does that sound?

In this episode of #rightyourownstory, I talk about the ongoing defamation case of Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard, their history, psychological evaluations and some of the behavioural issues that are alleged.
I also talk about how to recover from these kind of circumstances too, both emotionally and psychologically, and from a therapeutic perspective, so it is quite a full episode.
What do you think? Have you been following this case, and are you 'Team Depp', or 'Team Heard'.
If you have either been triggered yourself by this case, or have experienced something similar and want to emotionally and psychologically move away from it, you absolutely can. It is just a matter of getting help to do so, and counselling is recognised as a way to start the recovery process.
Please click on this link to arrange a free consultation with me, and we can see if we can start your recovery asap.

In this weeks episode of #rightyourownstory, I explain why affirmations generally do not work (because they are not done correctly in the first place), give a blueprint on how to do them properly, why you should apply this in your own lives, and even give a demo too.
I would recommend doing affirmations twice a day - As soon as you wake up, and just before you go asleep too, and persistence is key here.
Do not expect to say it for a few days and you're all done. It does not work like that.
Also, say them out loud for a greater impact.
The reasons for this is, you then also hear it, and hearing yourself say something is very powerful. Have you ever heard yourself talk yourself out of something? So, verbally say these affirmations too.
I also mention a book in this episode. Here is the Amazon link for it - How To Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci.
I hope you enjoy this one.
Best wishes,
James

In this weeks episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about an incident that only happened to me a few days ago when I had a puncture on my car as I was driving along the motorway, and how it gave me an idea for this podcast, namely, have YOU got a flat tyre too?
I don't mean a physical flat tyre, but more is there an area of your life where you can think, 'That's a bit flat'!
Are there steps you can take to change this? Can you pump it up, or does it need replacing altogether. What are the dangers if you just leave it? Will it stop you moving forward, slow you down or even prevent you moving altogether if it's not addressed?
WIth my actual tyre there was no option but to change it completely, and sometimes that's just the way it is. When I did what needed to be done, I was able to get moving again.
What can YOU do with yours?
I hope you enjoy this episode.

In this weeks episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about the x6 times World Snooker Champion Ray Reardon, and his mindset when approaching both his game, and his life. A lot can be learned from his approach in our own lives too.
Ray Reardon was the first No1 ranked player when rankings first came in (1976/77), the oldest world champion at 45 (1978), and the oldest player to win a ranking event when he was 50 (1982).
One of his quotes I find hugely inspiring - "It took me many years to learn there is only one ball on the table, and that is the white ball. If you cannot contain the white ball, you'll enjoy the game socially but you'll never master it, because you've got to get hold of that white ball and control it. It's your table".
Wise words indeed.
I hope you enjoy this episode.

In this weeks episode of #rightyourownstory I ask the question, are you a black belt or a white belt?
You are probably both, without even realising it.
I also talk about the founder of Judo, Kano Jigaro, who was born in 1860 and died in 1938.
As an old man approaching his death, he had a special message for his students, and its meaning is quite profound!
However, during his life he made it his mission to share Judo with the whole world. This dream continued (and continues) to last beyond his own life. With its ever growing audience, new members and schools across the world, it was finally accepted as a sport in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
I hope you enjoy this episode.

In this weeks episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about 'The Magic Pearl', the Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu, his classic book 'The Art of War', a real and present power you have within you that you probably didn't realise, and then I make a little drawbridge to link all of these topics together.
I would recommend listening to this a few times over.

I hope you enjoy this episode.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about a thing that almost everyone does, that really harms them, but just don't realise what it is.
This is an important thing to discover because it is a real secret enemy of yours, and until you realise its even there, you can't get rid of it, so awareness first is key.
When you discover its even there, I explain a technique of how to evict it, and it really does need to be evicted too. It is not your pal, a friend, or even kind.
I also mention a previous podcast episode to listen to as well called 'The Law of Polarity', so here is the link for that.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about 'The Law of Polarity'.
This is such an important law, and just being aware of it is a game changer. When you then start to apply it in your own life, things really start to shift.
You find resolve, hope, confidence and faith, so it's a very powerful cocktail, and it tastes great too!
I explain what 'it' is, and also how to apply it. I would recommend you listen to this a few times over so it really sinks in.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about a concept of fleas in a jar, and about limiting beliefs.
A limiting belief will keep you down more than anything else I know about, because like a quote from Henry Ford goes, "If you think you can, or think you can't, you're probably right".
Not only what we say verbally is important (because you engage another sense - you hear it), but our self-talk is so very important too because if it is poor, it will stop you going for things that you really want to do.
BUT, it does not have to be that way.
When you learn to develop an automatic strong and purposeful self-talk, you naturally burn down many obstacles that stop others. You then start to get different and better results too, just because you decided to internally say, "Yes, I can', as opposed to "No, I can't".
Then you change gear, both internally and externally, and everything starts to change for you.
If you would like help to develop your own internal self-talk, and become a more resilient version of yourself, taking on new challenges, just knowing you can succeed, I can definitely help you with that.
What would that be like for you, to just have that natural and automatic approach to life? What could you go on to achieve? What message would that send to your family, your children, your peers?
I'm guessing that would be pretty amazing, right?
Well, you can, and you would be amazed at how your life would change.
If you would like to have a free informal consultation, just reach out via phone or email (details below), and you can test the water with this before you dive in, all at no risk, so you really have nothing to lose whatsoever.
If you would like to get in touch, you can either email me or call me on +447511915580
What have you got to lose, and what have you got to gain?

In this weeks episode of #rightyourownstory I talk about the recent death of one of my mentors, Bob Proctor.
Bob was such an inspirational figure for me, and his knowledge was incredible. At 26 years of age, he met a man who would change his life forever. That man (Ray Stanford) showed him that he was capable of so much more, and it put him on a path that he would never wander from.
When Bob learned and applied this knowledge, not only did his own life change, but he decided he wanted to educate others so their lives could change too.
This is what he did until he passed away on February 3rd 2022, aged 87.
He was an amazing man.

Would you say it is ok to tell a lie depending on the content or motive of the person saying it?
In this episode of #rightyourownstory, I tell a story of a big decision a mother had to make towards her son, and what then took place afterwards.
Do you think she was correct, and would you have done the same?
I also talk about how certain messages told to children repeatedly (innocently or not), can be both a blessing and a curse.
I hope you enjoy this one.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory, I talk about Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of the id, the Ego and the Superego, and explain it is a more user friendly sort of way, as well as giving some examples of it in action.
It was originally translated by British Psychoanalyst James Strachey (b.1887 - d.1967), and this translation has come under some criticism that the true meaning and theory of Freud has been 'lost in translation'.
For further reading on Freuds work, I would definetly recommend the followingbook on Amazon.

In this episode of #Rightyourownstory I talk about a concept of others who have given you things that they should not have, and perhaps some of these 'bowls' you didn't even ask for or deserve.
To prevent this continuing to happen, I would recommend evaluating your boundaries, both with yourself and others.
Boundary setting is truly huge, and although perhaps difficult to approach, you truly do reap the rewards by having them in place.
It is also most important that YOU set your own boundaries, and not another set them for you.
I also mention a money saving tip from a previous episode, so here is the link for that.
And here is the 12 minute guided meditation I mention as well, to assist with you with your own Boundary setting.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory, (the first of 2022) I talk about a series of incidents that took place with a certain teacher I had at primary school, and although one was truly horrific for me, in a strange way that I couldn't appreciate at the time, it definetly shaped me into who I am today.
Later, I got my revenge on this teacher in front of the entire class, and in a way that neither of us could have predicted either!
I truly would not wish this experience on anyone, but I definitely learned something valuable that day, and I've also never forgotten it.

In this episode of #rightyourownstory (the last episode of 2021!), I talk about a strange dream I had a while ago, and also the concept of making New Year resolutions too.
When I was able to analyse my own dream I was able to make progress in a way that was previously holding me back.
Spoiler Alert - It was 'me' holding 'me' back, and my subconscious was letting me know it too. However, It was then down to me to take the action required.
As part of my work as a Counsellor, Hypnotherapist and Life Coach I do include dream analysis when it crops up, because dreams (and nightmares) can be so very revealing.

This is a difficult time for many, especially with Covid being here too, but this podcast is about still being able to give something to family and friends for free.........your time!

It's easy, and so rewarding too.

A Money Saving Tip to have £1,378.
Christmas is almost upon us and that can cause HUGE financial strain, on top of potential emotional strains too.
In this episode of 'Right Your Own Story', I explain a money saving technique a friend told me about a few years ago, and it works a treat.
If you do this technique properly, next Christmas you will have £1,378 put aside, which I'm guessing would be very helpful.

The Disney version of Aladdin, (either the Robin Williams or the Will Smith version) is quite a sad story really, especially for how Aladdins life really is. It does not get much easier when he meets the genie either, and is granted three wishes after rubbing the magic lamp.
In this episode of 'Right Your Own Story', I chat about Aladdin, his relationships, his life, his adventures, including some of the things I can see that are causing him an issue both as being 'just' Aladdin, and then later as steps into his false persona 'Prince Ali of Ababwa'.
I also mention what things may come up if he was in the therapy chair himself, as a client.

A common question I get asked a lot is, "So what does Hypnotherapy actually feel like"?
Many think it is like something you see in Hollywood films, maybe being out of control, forced to do something you don't want to do, being fast asleep or even similar to someone in a coma!
The truth is, it is like none of those things at all.
So in this episode or 'Right Your Own Story', I share not only what Hypnotherapy actually feels like, but I also mention two experiences I had when I first started practicing Hypnotherapy techniques during my training, with some surprising results!

In this episode of 'Right Your Own Story' I go into the most common question I get asked as a Professional Hypnotherapist, namely can anyone be Hypnotised?
The short answer is YES.
I also explain how to prevent or stop this happening.
When seeing a Hypnotherapist for therapeutic reasons, intentionally preventing yourself from going with the process can greatly impact on the success you are actually wanting to achieve.
Hopefully, you can see how this is counter-intuitive. A part of you is wanting to be, do or achieve 'X', but another part of you is preventing this happening. It is similar to trying to score a goal, but at the last minute aiming away from the goal itself, and then being disappointed that you didn't score.
It is a form of self-sabotage.
There can be a few reasons for this (and some valid ones too), but with a good Hypnotherapist, or in fact any therapist, you should be able to explore if this is the case for you, if it has happened in the past, why it may be happening again now (is it resistance or fear), how to resolve it internally, and then realign your aim intentionally.
Here are two scenarios to explain what I mean:
Scenario 1 - A person wants to lose weight, be healthier and feel more attractive.
If there is another part of them that does not want the attention this may bring from others, including possible sexual attraction, then there is an inner conflict or resistance. When this inner conflict is resolved, they can move forward, both consciously and unconsciously, and lose weight with ease.
Scenario 2 - Let's suppose a person really wants to stop smoking.
If all their friends smoke there may be an internal feeling of 'I may be viewed differently now', or 'I won't fit in anymore', or even 'I may be viewed as boring', so this inner conflict can start to feel like you are fighting against yourself, similar to an internal inner tug of war.
Not only is this exhausting, it stops you progressing.
Just like the first scenario, when this issue is resolved, YOU internally change gear, the transition takes place, and YOU then succeed, and you succeeding in your goals can only be a good thing, right?

James

In episode thirteen of 'Right Your Own Story' I talk about why we dream.
Dreams are so fascinating, and very revealing too.
They are an inroad into the subconscious mind, and a view into our processing.
I also explain why dreams can turn into nightmares, and why we later forget what we have been dreaming about too.
If you do have trouble getting off to sleep, here is a YouTube link for a special 10-hour guided mediation/sleep inducing hypnotherapy session

In episode twelve of 'Right Your Own Story' I talk about a story from the Bible - 'The Parable of The Three Talents'. (For reference it comes from Matthew 25:14-30).
Although I am not religious myself, I really do like this story.
Without giving information away as a spoiler in these show notes about the actual story itself, I do want to mention the underlying message.
If you exercise a certain muscle, it will grow. Likewise, if you don't, it won't. We all know this.
Well, the mind is also like a muscle, and as it was given to us completely free, many neglect it.
Our brains contains approx 86 Billion Neurons, (a Billion is 1000 Million).
Think of a Neuron as being like a road, linking one place to another, or put another way, linking one Neuron to another Neuron. They are the building blocks of the nervous system.
Can you imagine having a birds eye view of a series of roads like this, all 86 Billion of them, expertly built and operating together in a seamless fashion 24/7? This is what you naturally have going for you.
Some more facts about our brains:
It consumes 20% of the bodies energy, despite representing only 2% of the body mass.
It is about 75% water, and even a drop in dehydration of only 2% can impact on our memory and attention.
It will triple in size in the first year of our life.
In comparison to our 86 Billion, the Milky Way has approx 200-400 Billion stars, so you are walking around with a mini Milky Way between your ears.
I would like to suggest it is inconceivable we have this by mistake.
So are you using yours in a beneficial way a lot, fairly often, a little, or not at all?
I would like to say that the fact you are even reading this should make you aware of something about you, and that is a positive thing.
I hope the 'Parable of the Three Talents' has resonated with you, and you have got something from it, as much as I did when I first became aware of it.

In this episode of 'Right Your Own Story' I talk about the film 'The Wizard Of Oz', made famous by Judy Garland in 1939.
The film is full of lessons we can learn from as the characters doubt themselves, their capabilities, and their own power, so they are not exactly a recipe for success ................ until something changes within them.
Perhaps you can identify with some of these 'characters' that may live within you, and are actively doing their best to stop you achieving as well?
If you can resonate with this, you probably already know that this voice (or voices) will use any tactic, clean to downright dirty in its attempt for you to give it your attention. It may even try and make you believe it is your friend, but it is really your enemy, and a serious one too.
It deserves no place within you, whatsoever.
In this podcast, I talk about a few methods you can use to either turn down the volume of these characters, or even delete them!
When you do this, you will naturally find 'another voice' within you, and this voice is giving amazing advice that is truly worthy of your attention.
If you follow its advice, you will be happier, more peaceful and content, like being within the eye of a storm. All around you may be chaotic, but within you, YOU are calm.
You will then be able to do and achieve things you had not previously thought possible, and you will feel a natural comfortable confidence within you, that will also resonate out to those around you, whether they be friends, family, work colleagues, or even your children.
It is truly like magic, but one MUST be addressed without pity or remorse, and that is possible with the right approach.
If you can identify with this, and would like help banishing these 'characters' for good, contact me here, and we can arrange a free consultation call to discuss how we could go about this.
It could be one of the best things you ever do for yourself.
My very best wishes,
James

In this episode of 'Right Your Own Story', I tell a true fact about crabs in a bucket, and a certain thing they do when one tries to leave!
It's behaviour can easily be seen to transition into what 'we' may feel if we try to leave a situation, either personally or professionally, and what the possible results can be, feel or seem like.
Can you identify now or in your past with the crab that is trying to leave? If so, what did you do?
It's a question worthy of your attention.
Best wishes,
James

In this episode of 'Right Your Own Story' I talk about a statement I hear a lot, namely 'I am too old to change'.
Perhaps you have even heard yourself saying this?
I tell a true story of how this came up during a casual conversation with someone, and how that conversation then progressed as we 'went down the rabbit hole', playing a little mental game to test its validity. The realisation the person came to was quite revealing!
You see, it is so very important you are extremely careful what you say about yourself (and to yourself) out loud in this way, because YOU are listening.
Another way to explain this is, your subconscious is listening!
The truth is, you are actually so powerful that If you say something to yourself enough times your subconscious will take it as a fact, (or even as a command), and an internal rebellion can then happen if you later try and change your thinking, or try and do something different.
It is like having two people who speak two different languages trying to complete a task, but they just can't understand each other, and each have a different perspective on what is best.
It simply doesn't work, and the stronger one will generally win, ie the subconscious, just because it has probably been there longer and is more settled in.
Perhaps you have even experienced this inner conversation yourself, and no-one has had to even say a word to put you off. Maybe you went for something, but that 'other conversation' was just too loud or persistent, so you slowly went back to the safety zone, tail between your legs, feeling slightly bruised and beaten.
Perhaps this has happened a few times too often!
This internal instructions you have within you are the glue that can keep you stuck, but it doesn't have to be that way at all.
YOU can change this in a very subtle way, so YOU begin to teach the other part of you your language.
Variations on a theme can be:
I can't do x,
I could never do x,
I am not clever enough,
I don't have enough time, or even,
I am not good enough.
So in this episode I also give some tips on how to address this, and if you are saying these kind of things to yourself, I would suggest you pay close attention on how to stop it.
One tip that I didn't mention in the podcast, but has occurred to me during the writing of these notes, is the power of the word 'YET'. This changes everything, so those following statements then read as follows:
I can't do x YET,
I could never do x YET,
I am not clever enough YET,
I don't have enough time YET, or even,
I am not good enough YET.
Try this exercise:
1. Say the first version, and really notice how it makes you feel.
2. Give yourself a shake, stand up, move around, change your state, and take a breath.
3. Now do the second version, adding the word YET, and really listen to your own voice as you say it.
4. Notice if you feel any difference.
When you look at the subtle change here, what you are actually saying to your subconscious is, 'I may not be able to do X right now, but that is not how it is going to always be'. Remember, it is listening, so this new message has a very clear instruction. It is time to change gear!
Just this alone causes a completly different outlook and difference, so test this out yourself.
It could be a game changer!
Best wishes all,
James
In this episode of #Right Your Own Story, I tell a story of 'The Trouble Tree'.
Stress from our everyday lives can easily leak over into other aspects of our lives too, sometimes impacting on those closest to us that just don't deserve, want or need it.
It can impact our sleep, our eating, our behaviour, and lead to further stress too, so definitely not an ideal situation to leave unchecked.
In this episode I explain an easy technique I have been using for years that truly works, and I've found really helpful. Even though I know this, it took a reminder from an unexpected source to reinforce this to me recently!
I hope it helps you too.

(Note - I have uploaded this podcast again, as I think I had deleted the original by mistake!)
In this latest episode of 'Right Your Own Story' I talk about a fairly unknown law - The Law of Vacuum.
This is only a short episode, but don't let that deceive you. It is a very powerful law.
Have you ever cleared out your wardrobe, getting rid of some clothes you just don't wear anymore, and made some space?
What did you do with the new found space?
I'm guessing you filled it up again with more clothes, but why?
We generally cannot bear gaps, either physical, emotional or habitual. We have this desire to fill them, and if we are not careful, we can unconsciously fill them with similar things we have just got rid off, even if mustering up the courage to get rid of it in the first place was difficult or painful.
You may have seen this with friends (or even yourself) with diet plans that yo-yo, relationships and addictions, to name just a few.
In this podcast I go more into this more, and drop a few tips on how to be wiser around the Law of Vacuum too.
Best wishes all,
James
