One more about songwriting! Defiance is essentially about standing up for what you believe in, and seeing the world beyond binaries - real life is a bit more complex than that! I'm sharing how this song was inspired by my girlfriend's trip to Cuba & a great 2-part movie from Steven Soderbergh starring Benicio Del Toro. Let's start from scratch! This song is about many things: dysfunctional leadership, political madness, conspiracy theorists taking over...but mostly, it was a way to vent off my personal frustration of everything that was going on back in 2019-2020 and feeling anxious about the future.Here I'm also going through some bands that influenced our songwriting process, as well as a little book by a certain individual named Aldous Huxley, with a somewhat similar title (!), that was a big inspiration to write this song.Cheers,Caio

Being an independent band has a fair share of exciting challenges, but there's a clear downside when none of our band members is a big fan of shamelessly knocking on doors to say "Do you have a minute to hear about Komodo Fox?". Today's episode is a combination of things: Caio getting inspired after watching the Netflix series "The Playlist" (based on Spotify's story) and, of course, our own recent journey as a band, doing the best we can to attract attention in a way which feels honest and true to ourselves. We got ourselves thinking: ok, it's easier than ever to make music today, but...is promoting said music more accessible as well?

This time we had a chat with a person who had a direct impact on the making of Year Zero, and her name is Julia Assis.
Julia is a fantastic photographer who comes from Rio de Janeiro and has experience in a wide variety of projects, ranging from fashion, architecture, food and of course music. In 2016 she published a book called Rio, Eu Tatuo (I Tattoo Rio), which approaches personal stories through the lenses of body art, specifically tattoos inspired by the city of Rio de Janeiro.
We met each other in Berlin in 2020, while she was in town looking for people for a follow-up to that project; after spending an afternoon together and checking her portfolio, Phil and I asked if she could help us with her work as a photographer and thanks to her we now have some kickass imagery to support our promotion.
She has spent the last year (at least) having quite the international ride, from New York to Rome to Berlin to Mexico City. We recorded this episode in early May and at that time she was back in Rio. We got to talk about how she’s been dealing with the pandemic, her approach to photography and some inspiration and influences.
