Over two decades ago, a man, a microphone and an intense passion for music came together to form what has become Chicago's longest-running music television show - JBTV. 2011 marks JBTV's 26th anniversary, and we're celebrating by bringing you even more music and amazing artists and adding dynamic new hosts.
Committed to showcasing music stemming from both the national and local level, JBTV houses a massive archive of footage including classic episodes featuring Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Kill Hannah, Ben Folds Five, Green Day, The Flaming Lips, Fall Out Boy, Garbage, Ministry, and Joey Ramone. JBTV continues to welcome great artists like Against Me!, JP, Chrissie (Hynde) & the Fairground Boys, The Gaslight Anthem, Silversun Pickups, Foxy Shazam, AM Taxi, Hot Hot Heat, Circa Survive, and Dan Black to the studio, just to name a few.
Jerry Bryant, JBTV's namesake and host, has produced and aired almost 3,700 weekly thirty minute and one-hour episodes of the show since its inception. In the process, his love for unique music television programming has twice garnered the coveted Billboard Music Video Award for ´Best Local/Regional Alternative Modern Rock Show´ and multiple Emmy Awards for production and motion graphics. Jerry may be known for his free form interview style and signature chuckle, but what sets him apart from the rest is his dedication to presenting artists, otherwise ignored by mainstream media outlets, to his loyal viewers.
To ensure we capture music in its purest form, JBTV is produced in a true total-environment rock & roll music video production house, which includes a state of the art high definition sound stage spanning 5,500 square feet. Our studios are filled with the latest in video, recording, and editing equipment. Our crew is made up of music lovers who share a devotion for spreading our latest favorite tunes and artists.
JBTV has developed over 4,000 hours of original content that reaches an audience of approximately 13 million people via NBC Chicago Nonstop (digital channel 5.2 - Comcast and over-the-air TV) and WJYS-62 Chicago (Comcas, DIRECTV, and Dish Network). Throughout the years, our top priority has continuously been to create the highest quality content possible. Continuously hosting many of the biggest names in modern rock history early in their careers, JBTV is the longest running source for modern music television in the nation and one of the few remaining examples of Chicago´s proud tradition of local programming.

As we approach the end of the year on our new broadcast home, we thought it only fitting to feature what you – the proud and passionate JBTV viewers – have called your favorites of 2010.
Leading the views and votes is Against Me’s interview with JBTV host Brendan Kelly and their performance on our HD sound stage. Shot the afternoon of July 3, while the band was in town supporting Silversun Pickups at the Aragon Ballroom, Against Me! blisters through a stripped down set of anthemic pop-punk singalongs including pre-New Wave faves “Pints of Guiness Make You Strong” and “I Was a Teenage Anarchist,” as well as material from their latest release, White Crosses.
In the audience that day was WWE Superstar, CM Punk. Never one to shy from cameras, Punk obliged when we asked him to shoot a post-show interview. Trust us – you don’t need to be a WWE fan or follower to appreciate this former world champ’s reminiscence on growing up watching JBTV and attending sweaty, sold-out shows at Metro as a youngster.
Our friends from Atlanta, Death on Two Wheels, have been such a steadily requested segment since the band delivered this staggering in-studio performance last Spring that it only makes sense to bring them back for another wicked run on JBTV. On the road in support of their most recent EP, Again for The First Time, Do2W offers up their powerful blend of classic and modern rock, fronted by one of the most dynamic personalities (Trae Vedder) making music today. We dare you to watch this segment and not look to see when Death on Two Wheels is coming to town.

Toby and Brendan are both on double duty this week as the Static Age duo invades Santacon Chicago. For those unfamiliar, Santacon is an annual gathering of Chicagoans dressed as Santa Claus, spreading good tidings while on a city-wide bar crawl. Hundreds of Santas. Drunk, jolly Santas and right on time for Christmas.
Jerry Bryant revisits his classic JBTV in-studio segment with Joey Ramone. As many times as we watch this, we never grow tired of hearing Ramone pledge his deep-rooted hatred of the “bee girl” from the Blind Melon video. It’s a rare, awesome piece of footage from the JBTV 25-year archives and it’s back by popular demand!

In our two featured artist segments this week, Jerry Bryant welcomes Steel Train and I host Circa Survive inside the historic JBTV studios.
Circa filmed this incredible afternoon session on our 9-cam, high def sound stage a few weeks back, before their sold-out Chicago show at House of Blues. I’ve always enjoyed their music, but somehow avoided crossing paths with them for an interview or general hangs until now. Based on accounts from our mutual friends in Madina Lake, I knew going in they’d be good dudes. And after spending the day with them (topics of conversation included parenthood and inspiring performers), I can confirm that supporting Circa Survive is support well spent. During the performance, their singer Anthony Green asked our JBTV studio audience, “Who’s coming to our show later tonight?” A handful of kids said they couldn’t get tickets in time and they’re now selling for a few hundred bucks a pop on StubHub. In one of the cooler moves I’ve ever seen an artist pull, Anthony took their names and added them to the band’s guest list. So solid. As is their stripped down, JBTV exclusive set.
Also this week, JBTV cameras follow host Brendan Kelly backstage at UIC Pavilion for an exclusive interview with Slayer. The concept of an artist like Brendan (The Lawrence Arms) interviewing fellow artists like Slayer is endlessly fascinating to me, so I asked BK to walk me thru the atmosphere and his thought process before and during the interview. “I was pretty intimidated interviewing Dave and Kerry ,” he admits first and freely. “They put us in a makeshift living room stocked with beer, soda and somebody’s kid playing Xbox. We waited in there watching this incredibly bored and disenfranchised kid play some version of Mario Bros. for what seemed like hours before Kerry and Dave finally came in saying, “Eh, another one of these [interviews], eh?” as though they were about to get yet another anal probe.” Hilarious insight. I still have a tough time figuring out why some artists have such a disdain for interviews. Maybe because I’m the one always asking the questions?
Brendan continues, “I tried to be conversational and Dave was slightly receptive, but Kerry was clearly wanting to just get in and get out. His answers were super curt and, while he was pleasant enough, he’s scary as hell. Big beard, flame head, in Slayer, etc. Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio) is really into Nazi mysticism and all that. Slayer has written a lot of songs that seem to imply a fascination with the third reich, so I tried to go there without being accusatory. The results were pretty entertaining.”
Host Jenna Martinelli sits down with New York City indie rockers, The Do, at Schubas’ Harmony Grill for a candid look at the band during dinner. “Our conversation was really amusing and random,” Jenna told me. “A lot of talk about food and fashion.” Subject matter clearly close to Jenna’s heart.
I head out to Hard Rock Hotel on Michigan Ave. for a visit with our friends from Ocala, Florida, A Day to Remember. This interview was particularly exciting – moments before the shoot, the band had got word that their new album, What Separates Me from You, had unseated Taylor Swift for the number 1 spot on the iTunes music charts. No small feat. Celebratory drinks were had and Hard Rock memorabilia may or may not have been ripped off the walls. At least frontman Jeremy McKinnon stopped short of smashing any of it.
Finally this week, Jerry Bryant revisits one of his favorite classic JBTV segments featuring John Lydon a.k.a. The Sex Pistols’ “Johnny Rotten.” I asked Jerry to recall some details from this legendary 1992 encounter. “John was on the PIL [Public Image, LTD.] tour at the time. He was doing an interview at 93 WXRT and decided he didn’t like how it was going, so he walked out and showed up at JBTV 90 minutes early. I had no cameraman and no crew,” Jerry explains. “We usually have someone tour the guest around the studio before ending up in the on-air studio. John refused the tour and said, “I’m only answering ONE question on this crappy TV show.” So I took the camera, pointed it at John and he talked nonstop, for 40 minutes, about everything from bad music videos to showing his bare ass on TV.”
It is a great pleasure to welcome my dear friends in Plain White T’s to the JBTV studios for an exclusive performance on our high definition sound stage. A lot has changed for all of us in the last 11 years, but it’s safe to say more has changed for these kids from Villa Park.
“Hey There, Delilah” catapulted the band onto a worldwide platform, reaching the elusive #1 spot on the Billboard Top 100 chart and nudging their record “Every Second Counts” to Gold certification status. But, as you’ll see this week on JBTV, one of my favorite things about the T’s is that they’re still as humble and down to earth as they were when then played house shows in the 90’s. After countless world tours, the band is back with a brand new album (out this week) called “Wonders of the Younger,” and they’re debuting some of their live material for the first time this week... only on JBTV! And yes, they’ll play a show-closing version of “Delilah."
Our other featured in-studio artist this week is another one of our hometown favorites, The Frantic. If you’ve watched JBTV at all since last March, you’ve heard the band (whether you know it or not) every week as they perform our show’s intro theme song. You know the one; “J-B-T-V!” It’s about time we have these dudes featured properly on the HD sound stage. Having worked with the band dating back to my years on Q101 radio, I’ve said since the first time we spun “Audio and Murder” that The Frantic is bound for enormous things and I stand by it more today than ever. They were 17 then. They’re pushing 21 now. They’re growing up and their songwriting is growing up with them. They have incredible energy, charisma and stage presence and we’re thrilled to bring you this week’s JBTV exclusive studio session with The Frantic!

Jerry Bryant has the pleasure of talking with Terrible Things, an alt-rock supergroup, so to speak. Made up of former members of Taking Back Sunday, Coheed & Cambria and Hot Rod Circuit, the band drops by to jam and spread the word on their debut, self-titled concept album. The Terrible Things moniker, and their music, is inspired by a yearlong series of arsons in Coatesville, PA, that killed one, left over 40 families homeless and caused more than $3 million in property damages. A sad story, for certain, but the resulting music – which you’ll see them perform – is rich. Whether you caught the band on the 2010 Vans Warped Tour or this will be your first taste, JBTV is giving you total access to Terrible Things.
Host (and Lawrence Arms frontman) Brendan Kelly invited his friends in Riverboat Gamblers by the studio for an interview and performance. Cuz that’s how we do things at JBTV. The Austin, TX-based punks accepted and we, in turn, opened the invite to you (via Do312.com) to attend the taping. Little did we know (though we should’ve guessed) that Riverboat Gamblers would then invite our entire studio audience on stage with them during their rowdy set. It’s a JBTV first and it goes down on this week’s show!
Host Jenna Martinelli hung with Jimmy Eat World at the Riv on the band’s most recent stop in Chicago. Touring in support of their 7th studio album, “Invented,” the band made time for Jenna (and who wouldn’t?) before the sold-out gig. Thankfully JBTV cameras were there to capture our visit with frontman Jim Atkins.
JBTV had all access to this year’s Carnival of Madness tour, featuring the long-awaited homecoming of my pals in Chevelle. It was definitely the summer’s most straight-ahead rock tour; the bill included Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust and 10 Years. Same for JBTV co-host Brendan Kelly as he hosts their longtime friends, Street Dogs. The story of singer Mike McColgan has always fascinated us. He willingly left Dropkick Murphy's in 1998 to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter, but in 2002 determined that he couldn't extinguish his passion for making music. 8 years and 5 albums later, Street Dogs make their JBTV debut on our HD soundstage! We highly recommend this set for fans of Rancid, Bouncing Souls, Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys.

JBTV founder/owner/host/producer/icon Jerry Bryant kicks things off with Alberta Cross performing on our high definition sound stage. Many of us in Chicago got our first exposure to Alberta Cross at last May's Them Crooked Vultures gig at Aragon. TCV aside, the NYC-based band has one hell of a touring resume; they've done Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo and have been hand-selected to open for Oasis, Dave Matthews Band, The Shins, Bat for Lashes and Simian Mobile Disco. Alberta Cross hit JBTV while out on their very first US headlining tour. This is certainly a tight performance not to miss! Oh, and I've heard that their band name is an anagram for something. And they don't tell people what it means.
This week's other featured artist is Bayside. It was a real treat to have the guys come up to play live on our HD stage. Pretty sure it's one of my top 3 performances of the year. And wait til you hear their Weezer cover. It's ridiculous. It is fascinating, on the 5th anniversary, to hear singer Anthony Raneri open up about the band's van accident that took the life of Bayside drummer John "Beatz" Holohan. Our good friend Dan Black – British, ‘wonky pop’ artist best known for his 2009 “Symphonies” collaboration with Kid Cudi – brings his visually and sonically adept act to our high definition sound stage. He’s an incredibly unique and focused performer who makes an impressive mountain of sound out of a very minimal setup.
The same is true, but by a much different approach, for our other featured artist this week – The Gaslight Anthem. Typically best heard and seen at max volume, Gaslight joins JBTV hosts Brendan Kelly and Tobias Jeg for a conversation and then unplugs for an intimate interpretation of their 2008 breakthrough “The ’59 Sound” and 2010’s criticallyacclaimed “American Slang.” Vocalist Brian Fallon is such a tactful songwriter that it’s almost an entirely new set of chills you’ll get from these JBTV exclusive stripped down versions of songs you already know.
Host Ryan Manno goes on location for an up-close interview with NYC-based, indie rockers Interpol. Manno sits down with drummer Sam Fogarino and guitarist Daniel Kessler in the band’s Ritz-Carlton penthouse to discuss the band’s recent personnel changes, their new self- titled album and, of course, how they manage to always look so damn fashionable.
Host Jenna Martinelli visits with Murder by Death in the JBTV studio. Supporting the release of “Good Morning, Magpie,” the band from Bloomington, Indiana discusses the unconventional making of the new record – they wanted to create something that captured what life is like at home, so they made the album in a barn while sitting around, drinking whiskey with their friends. “That’s what we do,” explained singer Adam Turla, moments before he serenaded

UK-based One Eskimo is not just a band - they are a complete multimedia project. Their music follows a storyline, which has been animated to create a full visual and audio experience. This week on JBTV, watch these artists perform their carefully constructed ambient rock on the JBTV sound stage, before being interviewed by JBTV namesake, Jerry Bryant. Next up, the catchy power pop quartet, A Rocket to the Moon, stop by the studio for a chat with host Jenna Martinelli. In support of their debut album 'On Your Side', the band has toured with Motion City Soundtrack, Sing It Loud, fun., and as a part of Warped Tour 2010. The formation of Denmark-based rock band New Politics involved a bit of happenstance, after singer David Boyd came across an ad in the newspaper for a Battle of the Bands and entered on a whim, despite not having the necessary component of an actual band. Three weeks later, New Politics played their first show and placed in the top four of almost a thousand entered bands. This week on JBTV, host Kevin Manno gives his farewell JBTV interview, before starting his own show over at MTV next week, and heads over to the Dew Tour to catch up with this incidental band. To finish off the show, we're going back in time with a classic Jerry Bryant interview with The Spill Canvas. The band have been going strong for the greater part of the past decade, and 2010 will see three new releases from these rockers - the full-length 'Formalities' and EPs 'Abnormalities' and 'Realities'.

Who would have pegged David Letterman as a pop punk fan? Not me. Nevertheless, Huntington Beach's Runner Runner have recently been signed by Letterman's new record label, C.E. Music, and have just released their debut album. Next thing you know, we'll find the late night talk show host will start sporting spiky hair and Chuck Taylors. Runner Runner will be stopping by the JBTV studio on this week's episode to chat with Ryan Manno and perform music from their new album on our JBTV HD sound stage. If you've been wondering what progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria have been up to recently, host Jenna Martinelli has got you covered as she heads backstage at Q101's Jamboree for an exclusive interview with front man Claudio Sanchez. They're currently on tour in support of their latest album, Year of the Black Rainbow, which is actually a prequel to their previously released four concept albums. To round out the show, we're digging up some never-before-seen archived footage with Jerry Bryant and one Richard Melville Hall, otherwise known as Moby.
Chicago is not only home to a plethora of fantastic bands and quite possibly the greatest music television show ever of all time in the universe (cough, cough...), but we're also lucky enough to be privy to some first-rate venues and record labels. Brendan Kelly and Tobias Jeg are bringing the best new punk music, and what better place to turn to for some raucous punk rock than the eminent Fat Wreck Chords? We’ve got a full roster of label mates on the show, starting with and interview and performance with San Francisco’s Dead To Me. Next, Toby heads all the way up to Milwaukee to chat with Fat Wreck Chords founder and NOFX front man Fat Mike over at the Riverside Theater, with what is Fat Mike’s first television interview in years. While not connected to Fat Wreck Chords, Scranton-based band The Menzingers also deliver some rowdy punk music, and Toby got a hold of them for an interview at Riverside Theater.

Then Brendan Kelly and Tobias Jeg of JBTV Static Age take viewers backstage at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom for a visit with Angels & Airwaves frontman Tom Delonge (Blink-182). After We revisit host Jerry Bryant's 1995 in-studio session with Alanis Morissette. Neither of them could've guessed that 15 years later, "Jagged Little Pill" would go on to sell more than 33 million copies worldwide.

Next, Brendan Kelly and Tobias Jeg from JBTV Static Age catch up with Los Angeles-bred pop punk band Say Anything. Chicago's own Empires have just released a new EP, "Bang", and will be catching up with Ryan Manno in the JBTV studio. This week we'll also see the return of archived JBTV footage, with classic footage of crooner Chris Isaak.
While we may be a bit biased, the general consensus among the JBTV staff is that Chicago has the best local music scene in the country. This week we're celebrating why we love our city so much with an all-Chicago JBTV episode. To start things off, one of the biggest bands coming out of Chicago right now, AM Taxi, are being interviewed by Kevin Manno along with an in-studio performance. While they may have moved their act over to LA, OK Go are still Chicagoans at heart, and Jenna Martinelli will be catching up with them on the scene at Metro.
