This week on the Summer Mumma Podcast I dive into the truth on water safety for under 5's in rural communities and why they are most at risk?
Australia is a country that poses different types of risk for children under 5 not only geographically but culturally, and the climates are diverse. Urban and rural locations are very different, especially for the water safety risks.
While I have been preparing the Water Babies Membership behind the scenes I gathered valuable research from industry leaders and what I found was astonishing. I hope that this brings some awareness to families with children under 5 and how they approach their child's water safety.
New Parents especially may not see water safety as part of their lives. Especially if they as a child or adult didn't live with water.
In a study, Royal Life Saving Australia found that indigenous, migrants and refugees were most at risk as they might be unaware of their surroundings, particularly at home and in the wider community, especially for their children.
If you'd like to hear more on why rural kids are most at risk in the climate of Australia, tune in as I offer not only the findings but some easy ways to access some great resources and be more aware of water safety for your family.
Resources for your family: https://kidsalive.com.au/
Thank you! I hope this helps you and your kids by bringing more awareness to the dangers of water when we don't understand the real importance of just how important water safety is. As the saying goes we must learn to crawl before we can walk and the same can be said for swimming.

This week on the Summer Mumma Podcast I talk about why being busy won't help you be the best mum?
With a never-ending list of jobs to do, it is easy to get stuck in a downward spiral of doing everything. I think as a mum we can all relate to this. Even if you are not a mother and do the same you need to hear this. So for this episode, I ask that you grab a pen and paper to note down what we discuss, especially if you can resonate with feeling like this. Here we discuss the 5 signs you may not be making your self-care a priority:
1. You don't feel like yourself anymore, 3. Your own time or care is on the to-do list, 4. You feel guilty about doing this and put yourself last. To hear the full 5 listen to the episode.
Believe it or not, there are reasons why we don't take care of ourselves and I want to show you why? This will likely be different for each of us but once we become more aware this can help us find our way back.
Beliefs play a big part, 1. You think it is selfish to care for myself, 2. Being strong allows us to sacrifice our own needs to meet the needs of others, 3. I don't deserve it, as you feel you have not earned this, 4. I don't have time to focus on me, 5. My circumstances don't allow this
Ways to make your self-care a daily routine:
Identify what you think, that belief, maybe that has been getting in the way of your self-care. Stop and acknowledge your feelings and say thank you for your thoughts and acknowledge them. It is just a thought you can easily change even if it is only small to begin.
I shared 5 easy ways you can incorporate care into each day.
Thank you! I hope this helps you in some way to be a better version of yourself and happier. Love what you hear? I invite you to subscribe to the Summer Mumma Podcast so you never miss another one. Welcome to the Summer Mumma Podcast I'm your host Janis Carver, in this episode 4, I share more on the realities of Motherhood part 2. Did you know becoming a mother is defined as Matrescence when a child is born, so too is a mother? In today's society, there is so much focus on the baby, but what about YOU. It is something that new mums or soon too, need to be, should be aware of. The truth is once you become a mother you will change, everything does. You will need support, check your expectations, especially regarding what you thought and how it actually is, family dynamic changes, emotions, and guilt. Your awareness of this and knowing that your expectations will be different to how it looks in everyday life. This will help you better adjust to this new journey. Be sure to consider the gains and acknowledge the losses. Your time matters. Here is the definition of this change.https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/matrescence Birth That is up to you, it is good to have a plan and know your options but know that this could change and that is okay. Cover what your expectations are of your support person, pain relief or not, identify what is important to you. Natural, Hypnobirthing but most importantly it is okay to speak up you do not always need to follow the guidance of others even if it is your first time. https://raisingchildren.net.au/pregnancy/labour-birth

Breastfed or formula-fed. To help make the best decision it is important to know what is best. You may have already decided, but sometimes women cannot breastfeed, and a bottle is the only option. Breastfeeding initially can be challenging but once you are comfortable it is a beautiful bond with your baby and a great way for your body to recover. https://raisingchildren.net.au/newborns/breastfeeding-bottle-feeding

Welcome to the Summer Mumma Podcast I'm your host Janis Carver, in this episode 2, I share more on this question from mothers and carers about being uncertain or worried when to start your little one in swim lessons.
This is a common question that mums and carers ask.
Common concerns are, the cost, we don't have a pool, they won't be able to swim straight away and we never go on holidays. Or different views of other family members may make you second guess your decision.
Austswim who are Australia's national organisation for Teaching of Swimming and Water Safety (Educators in aquatics)
Extensive research carried out by medical and industry consultation does not recommend formal swimming or water safety programs for infants under 6 months of age.
From birth to 6 months of age parents can continue water exposure in the bath at home. Parents can seek advice from swim schools to introduce infants to aquatic experiences at home to prepare them for formal learning from 6 months
If introducing infants who are less than 6 months of age to public pools extra care must be taken to ensure the health needs fro infants are catered for. (water hygiene, water and air temperature and baby handling techniques.
Infant and Preschool Aquatics and water safety programs are designed to introduce you and your child to water.
So any programs aquatic programs for infants under the age of 24 months where the child is getting to know and experience life in the water are known as water familiarisation
If your child is older and has yet to attend formal water safety programs or water programs contact your local swim school or contact
Remember water safety, always be within arms reach, supervision at all times regardless of a child's swim ability, and recognise and eliminate water dangers. Water is everywhere, so learn safety knowledge and survival skills.

Welcome to the Summer Mumma Podcast I'm your host Janis Carver, in episode 3, I share the 3 realities of Motherhood you won't want to miss. As a mum myself, I know there were many things when I became a new mum I thought I knew, but there were many I didn't. They were things no one ever spoke to me about and I never knew until I experienced this myself. So for those of you who do not know, I'm a member of the Social Method Society, and the founder and owner are Tracy Harris. So before I go any further let's get into it.
The first one is Cluster feeding? If you do not know what this is it usually happens in the first few days or weeks of having your baby. When your baby is showing hunger signs, they usually won't stop crying until they are fed. This will be obvious because your baby will have a lot of short feeds close together, and this will lead to short rests or sleeping between each of the feeds (even only 20 min between). This can be challenging for mum because you are still getting comfortable with learning to breastfeed and get your babies to latch on, etc. The positive thing is that babies know instinctively to do this as it will boost your milk supply which means more for your beautifully growing baby. So mummy it's important to know there is nothing wrong with your milk or supply. It is your baby trying to increase your milk and usually happens when a baby is experiencing a growth spurt. It is also important to know that this can happen at times other than when your baby is firstborn. I have included 1 tip-Sometimes there is no solution but to hold, cuddle them, feed them and wait for it to pass If you would like more tips on how to help you through these times I will include them in the show notes where you can find some helpful information from Australian Breastfeeding Association
Hormones after birth, Wow your baby is finally here and what an exciting time this is. But your body's hormones have immediately begun to change The two hormones Progesterone and estrogen decrease once your baby and placenta is delivered. These are the hormones that aid in regulation during pregnancy by helping the womb grow, and help grow your baby creating new blood vessels and transfer of nutrients. Oxytocin kicks into overdrive to compensate for this change in hormone levels and is where the motherly instinct comes from but this change can lead to what is known as baby blues, you may feel teary, anxious and irritable. Don't be alarmed if you don't have the motherly instinct you expected it is quite normal for this not to happen straight away and can be because you are having other feelings of fear, worry frustration. It will come Mumma, but rest assured this will settle. The other hormone is Prolactin and it increases, its purpose is to encourage milk production and help with your natural breastfeeding journey. So it's no wonder new mums can feel like there is a lot happening, it's because there is. It can be expected that as a new mum we return to normal immediately but it does take time and we should allow our bodies this time and do our best to be kind to ourselves and accept support.
Sleep deprivation, (Sleep Foundation)There will likely be sleep challenges in the first few weeks of bringing your new baby home and sometimes this extends longer than a few weeks. As a new mum, you are at risk of suffering from insomnia. This could see anxiety, depression, daytime sleepiness, or fatigue. It has also been found that sleep deprivation can increase postpartum symptoms and affects 1 in 8 mothers. Having this awareness can allow you to be a step ahead by ensuring that you have regular naps, and not pushing through like so many mothers will do, Saying no if visitors be it family or friends would like to visit and even more so before bub has had their 6-8 weeks needles. Keep a good sleep routine dark environment and a nice temperature and try to go to bed at similar times. If you are sharing the&
