Today we have an incredibly special guest, Dr. J.J. Peterson.

J.J. is the head of StoryBrand, an incredible organization that helps businesses clarify their message through a proven framework. I’ve had the blessing of working with StoryBrand as an agency partner for nearly four years now, and I have cherished every chance I get to learn from him. As you’ll learn, any time you get to spend some quality time with J.J., you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll walk away with a deeper perspective on the world around you.

J.J. and I have had the chance to work together on several projects, he has consulted with dozens of billion-dollar brands and thousands of small businesses.

Today, I asked him to join the show to talk about what most businesses struggle with, execution. As you’ll learn, J.J. earned his Ph.D. as a part of his research into narrative communication and how this method can work for literally any business as long as they executed.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy hearing from one of my favorite people, Dr. JJ Peterson.

With the recession on everyone’s mind and interest rates on the rise, already over 7%., I’m constantly getting questions about how to ensure you’re pivoting your business well.

Well, I have been dealing with the struggle of building our forever home out in the Austin area, and interest rates are absolutely killing me; at least, that’s how it feels.
So I gave my friend, John Weston, a call. He runs an incredibly successful real estate firm out of Washington, and he provided some advice that absolutely rocked my outlook on the future. That’s why I asked him if he’d be willing to carve out some time to jump on this episode of Good Business!

I do not doubt that his knowledge and insight into the economy will help you reframe your perspective on running a good business and investing well.

Today I’m calling an audible and deviating from our normal rhythm of having a special guest. With the fed proposing yet another rate hike and inflation running out of control, the recession is ever present on our minds as business owners. Since I’ve been out for a few weeks, I figured the best way to bring you value is to share a glimpse into the coaching I do for small businesses.

A few weeks ago, I hosted a workshop discussing how to build a recession-proof marketing plan. So in this episode of Good Business, I’ll share the seven key components to crafting a recession-proof marketing plan.

So if you run a business or organization and want to do more than put out fires and take the “see what works” shotgun approach, this episode is for you.

I love how Todd Henry, author of Herding Tigers, defined Integrity. He said, "Integrity means very simply that your life is integrated. What is on the inside is plainly visible on the outside." When you live by integrity, you will be able to navigate every challenge much easier by simply being who you say you are, no matter where, whatever the cost.

In this episode, I invited a long-term ally and confidant who has walked with me since the company's founding, being a man I respect immensely for his integrity. James was in the room, contributing to the formation of our definition of integrity many years ago. We defined integrity quite similarly to Todd Henry by saying it means, "Regardless of the cost, we are united to be honest, to live morally, and to humbly serve others."

James and I discuss the many areas that integrity becomes a necessary element of our daily life, and we also dive into the concept of conflict of interest, discussing why it's so important to know where you stand on this as a marketer before it's too late.

Despite his inability to recognize a good cup of coffee, I’ve still chosen to invite the tea-loving Englishman, Mike Thakur, onto the show today. Mike is the founder and CEO of The Worklodge, a Texas-based co-working space.

Their team is on a mission far greater than having the coolest new swag or local beer on tap. They’re on a greater mission to change the world and be the hands and feet of Jesus. And I’ve asked Mike to walk us through what it actually looks like to run a kingdom-minded business.

The Apostle Paul made tents, and he did it to be an example to ministry leaders. By making tents in the marketplace, he was placing himself in the best place possible to make the biggest impact possible.

The current model of church, mission, and ministry has developed non-profit and church leaders into modern-day beggars. Why would we think that's the best we can have when there are capable people in the workplace who can do so much more? What if businesses could be more involved in changing the world for the sake of the Gospel?

Our season kicks off next Wednesday, so subscribe now and in the meantime, check out last season if you missed it! Our most downloaded episode to date was with my dear friend, Michael Green, as we dove into how you can forecast your growth despite the looming, and now very present, recession.

Look, the stakes are high in small business. And what we want to do is learn from one another’s mistakes so that we can avoid them. So I’m interviewing business leaders who run businesses with revenues as low as $300,000 and as high as $50 million. But the pain is still there for the failures.

So I want to invite you to join me on this journey of discovery. I wake up every morning with the desire to run a good business, and if you do too, then this show is for you! If any service company has its act together, it's Chick-Fil-A. Their processes are pristine and their product has been marketed so well that many Bible-believing Christians will adamantly proclaim that the food comes "pre-blessed". But even this massively successful company that Truett Cathy built with such fervor still needs support. And that's where it's business and leadership coaching comes in. That program is called Trevero.

The most successful leaders are the ones who realize they aren't perfect. And Trevero is the group to coach the future franchise owners. I had the privilege to begin working with Elise Griffin and the rest of the amazing team at Trevero several years ago as I helped them clarify their message and relaunch their web presence. I learned so much that I'm on track to put my own leadership teams through executive coaching as well.

In this episode, we focus on the value of investing in yourself as a leader and how you are never too experienced or too qualified to grow. Chick-Fil-A franchise owners are some of the most respected leaders in business and if they can grow through a good coaching program, you can too.

Main things we'll be talking about:

  • Why business coaching isn't therapy
  • Your leadership blind spots and how to identify them
  • When you have accountability, your P&L will be healthy

The divorce rate for entrepreneurs is 48%. That means that nearly half of all marriages fail when put under the pressure of starting a company.

Building a business from scratch, and bootstrapping it for that matter, is one of the most difficult challenges that you will ever face in business because the risk is real and it's all on the line. Your career, your reputation, your relationships... Everything is at risk because of the high-pressure, high-risk, and high-reward all swirling around at the same time.

As a serial entrepreneur with a steadily growing portfolio of businesses that I oversee and invest in, if I could say there was one crucial element to my success, it's Emilee. I would say, recognizing God's grace on it all, there would be no chance of success without Emilee being who she is and supporting me the way she has.

Today I asked Emilee to join in and share what we've learned, the mistakes we've made, and the protections we put in place at the beginning so that no matter what happened, we remained strong and our marriage survived. I have no doubt that she will be an encouragement and her wisdom will be impactful as you seek to lead your business well.

Main things we'll be talking about:

  • The right partner will skyrocket your business
  • Setting boundaries in business to protect your marriage
  • Bad goals will kill your relationships

What do cryptocurrencies and the metaverse have to do with running a good business? I believe that if you are a business owner who plans on staying in business for more than the next 5 years, this episode is one you should listen to.

In the mid-2010s, I invested in Ethereum and Bitcoin and did so well with crypto that I was able to buy my first home after seeing nearly a 4000% ROI. Earlier on in my career, I was an early adopter, utilizing social media for business. It seems like a no-brainer now, but no one was doing it in the late 2000s/early-2010s. Because I was an early adopter for my clients, they were able to see, in some cases, a 10x in revenue simply because of the way they responded to the growing online social media economy.

As a digital strategist and essentially a fractional CMO for numerous businesses across the country, I am consistently looking ahead so that all of my companies and my clients can be positioned to win. In today’s episode, we're going to talk about the metaverse and how you as a leader in your business or non-profit should be pivoting.

Main things we'll be talking about:

  • My vision of what 2032 will look like in the advertising space
  • Neuralink and Elon Musk's influence on the Metaverse
  • Why you will be using NFTs in your business in 3 years

In March 2022, we saw the highest inflation spike since the 70s at nearly 9%. The economic outlook for most of the country is not bright, so how should we respond as business owners?

I hired Michael Green to join my team because I needed someone I could trust to help me manage the finances and people of my company as we grew. Since joining the team, we have nearly doubled in profitability and Michael is consistently looking for ways to ensure we win financially as a company. Needless to say, he is a vital part of the organization. As Chief Financial Officer, guiding me in all of my businesses, he is keeping his eyes on what is important (a few of them might surprise you 😉)!

In today’s episode, we're going to talk about how we are pivoting and how you can pivot your business or non-profit to best prepare for what seems to be a rough road ahead. It's heavy, but couldn't be more grateful for the insight he brings in this episode.

Main things we'll be talking about:

  • Forecasting growth with a bleak economic outlook
  • Why setting a vision is vital to know how to forecast
  • The most valuable investment for a Christian leader right now

Are you willing to sacrifice for the sake of your values? What does that look like for a business owner?

Meet seasoned investor, highly-successful entrepreneur, and now recently published children's book author, Robert Roark.  When Robert and I first met, I had no idea who he was and he had no desire to tell me. He said, "I'm Just a Guy." But before too long I realized he had a wealth of knowledge and experience to share as I helped him launch his book series to the world.

In today’s episode, we're going to talk about the importance of putting your money where your values are and that there are far more important goals in business than money.

Main things we'll be talking about:

  • How a children's book can shape the future

  • Why it's worth investing in the values you care about

  • What we should be doing as Christian entrepreneurs

In March of 2020, the covid lockdowns were merely days away. Business owners were feeling a range of gut-wrenching emotions - some froze, and some innovated. For Alex Barker, owner of District Coffee Roasters, the lockdowns gave him a chance to let his values lead his company. As a wholesale coffee roaster, District was primed to fail. They primarily sold to churches, coffee shops, and small businesses. In a matter of hours, his entire revenue stream dried up.

It was "do or die" and Alex was determined not to fail. His team, his growers, and his customers relied on him and he got creative, bringing about one of the most successful years in his company's history. In today’s episode, we'll talk about what he did, how it has continued to work, and how he held to his values when it was nearly impossible to do so.

Main things we'll be talking about:

  • How a wholesale coffee co. actually grew exponentially in the middle of lockdowns
  • The value of small businesses collaborating with competition
  • Taking care of your growers and team in developing countries

When I first started in business, I wanted it to maintain my integrity, regardless of the cost. For me, that meant seeing the world in black and white. It didn’t take me long to realize that there had to be room for gray area, and the real test of my integrity came when I had to live in that gray area when the decisions weren’t clear cut.

In today’s episode, I asked commercial real estate broker, James Robertson, with JLL, to join me. He helped me navigate one of the most difficult times I’ve had in business. When COVID hit and cash ran dry, the bills were still due.
