Welcome back to DMR!
Christopher Nolanâs The Odyssey has officially stormed global box offices, pulling in a massive $1.1bn approx. worldwide (Note: Episode filmed prior to this mark). Driven by Nolan's trademark practical scale and an A-list ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Anne Hathaway, this adaptation breathes gritty, high-stakes life into Homer's ancient text.
The film naturally invites heavy comparisons to past sword-and-sandal historical epics, most notably Wolfgang Petersenâs Troy (2004) and Zack Snyderâs 300 (2007). While Troy leaned into gritty historical realism and 300 traded in hyper-stylized graphic novel aesthetics, Nolan successfully bridges the gap between the two. He marries the massive, grounded military scale of 2000s historical dramas with a dark, myth-heavy fantasy layer, pushing the boundaries of what a modern blockbuster epic can achieve; with scenes like the Cyclops cave, to the immersive giant whirlpool, Nolan takes us on an epic journey!
Ultimately, The Odyssey stands out by refusing to shy away from the supernatural elements of the original myth while maintaining the hard-hitting gravity expected of a Nolan production. Whether it's destined to outlast the legacy of films like Troy and 300 in the cultural zeitgeist is still up for debate, but its jaw-dropping technical execution and box office dominance make it an essential cinematic event.
Dewey discusses the pros and cons of the film and where he feels it fits within the Nolan cinematic universe - Is this Nolanâs best?

Welcome back to DMR!
As we break down the first official trailer for The Avengers: Doomsday!
The trailer explodes with multiversal energy, pulling listeners into a collision of three iconic worldsâAvengers, XâMen, and the Fantastic Four. Doctor Doom stands at the center of the chaos, radiating a level of power that instantly reframes the stakes. His confrontation with Thor, stopping Stormbreaker midâstrike, signals that this isnât just another villain risingâitâs a seismic shift in the MCUâs hierarchy. The trailer leans heavily into tension, showcasing collapsing realities, returning legends, and the emotional weight of heroes facing a threat that eclipses anything theyâve known.
What makes the trailer truly electrifying is its sense of scale and inevitability. The incursions between universes feel catastrophic, pushing characters into alliances and conflicts that fans have dreamed about for years. Seeing Steve Rogers, Loki, Professor X, and Magneto woven into the same narrative hints at a story built on legacy, consequence, and impossible choices. As Doom warns of an âunthinkable decision,â the trailer positions Doomsday as a defining chapterâone that promises not just spectacle, but a reckoning across the multiverse.

The Minions must then band together to fix the disaster they created, blending slapstick mayhem with colorful Old Hollywood flair. Directed by Pierre Coffin, the film features an allâstar voice cast including Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, and Jeff Bridges. The story follows Dek, a young, outcast Yautja on a quest to prove his worth to his warrior clan by hunting the seemingly unkillable apex predator of the treacherous, alien world of Genna, often called "The Death Planet." His perilous journey leads to an unlikely alliance with an advanced Weyland-Yutani Corporation android named Thia, whose own mission on the hostile planet went sideways. Together, the mismatched pair must navigate the lethal environment, evade Weyland-Yutani forces, and confront a terrifying creature that challenges everything Dek has been taught about the honor of the hunt, making for a thrilling sci-fi survival adventure.
The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who also helmed the critically acclaimed Prey. The main cast features Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as the Predator protagonist, Dek, and Elle Fanning in the dual role of the androids Thia and Tessa. As of the latest reports, Predator: Badlands has earned over $162 million at the global box office. Critics have embraced the fresh take, awarding it a Certified Fresh 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have given it an even higher score of 96%.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story is the third season of the Netflix anthology Monster. Charlie Hunnam takes on the chilling role of Ed Gein, the real-life murderer and grave robber, playing him with a disturbing mix of vulnerability and menace. Heâs supported by Laurie Metcalf as his domineering mother, Augusta, and Tom Hollander portraying Alfred Hitchcock in a metafictional twist â tying Geinâs life to the cinematic monsters he inspired. The series was developed by Ian Brennan and overseen by Ryan Murphy, with Max Winkler directing much of the season. Hunnam has said that he felt significant pressure playing such a dark, psychologically complex figure, and described the role as emotionally taxing.
Critically, the season has been met with strong backlash. Many reviewers criticize it for sensationalising Geinâs crimes rather than offering a thoughtful exploration of his psyche. Some argue that the show leans too heavily into stylised horror, fictional subplots, and shock value â distracting from any deeper commentary on mental illness or the nature of evil. Thereâs also concern about historical inaccuracy and how the series humanizes Gein at the expense of his real-life victims. While Hunnamâs performance is often cited as a high point, critics largely describe the overall show as morally ambivalent, unfocused, and exploitative.

Directed by the acclaimed Guillermo del Toro, the new Frankenstein on Netflix features an exceptional cast led by Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature. The ensemble also includes Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Charles Dance, bringing together a powerhouse of talent under del Toroâs gothic vision. The film reimagines Mary Shelleyâs timeless tale with the directorâs signature blend of emotional depth and dark beauty, crafting a hauntingly intimate exploration of creation and consequence.
The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant yet tormented scientist whose obsession with conquering death leads him down a path of obsession and tragedy. Del Toroâs interpretation emphasizes both the horror and the humanity of the tale, pairing breathtaking production design with an emotionally charged narrative. Critics have hailed it as one of the directorâs finest works, earning a stellar score on Rotten Tomatoes and widespread praise for its performances, atmosphere, and heart-wrenching storytelling.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is a visually impressive but narratively uneven return to the dinosaur blockbuster formula. Critics praise its thrilling set pieces, polished effects, and renewed focus on the prehistoric stars that made the franchise iconic. Itâs a big, loud, entertaining ride that captures some of the old magic, and for audiences simply craving dino mayhem, it largely delivers. The cast is solid, the action sequences are well-executed, and it feels more respectful of the original Jurassic Park tone than some recent installments.
But the story itself doesnât quite evolve â itâs weighed down by thin characters, predictable plotting, and a few unnecessary subplots. Many reviewers describe it as fun but forgettable, a movie that entertains in the moment yet doesnât leave a lasting impact. Thatâs why it sits at around 50% on Rotten Tomatoes: half the critics enjoyed the spectacle, while the other half felt the franchise is stuck in the past. In short, Rebirth roars but doesnât soar!

One Battle After Another is a 2025 action-thriller directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, a former revolutionary leader trying to live a quiet life off the grid with his daughter, Willa, played by Chase Infiniti. Their peace is shattered when Willa disappears, pulling Bob back into a world he thought he'd left behind. Teyana Taylor plays Perfidia, a figure from Bobâs past whose allegiances are uncertain, while Sean Penn portrays Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw, an old adversary with unfinished business. The film also features Benicio del Toro and Regina Hall in pivotal supporting roles.
With its grounded performances and politically charged storyline, the film blends personal stakes with broader themes of loyalty, consequence, and resistance. Paul Thomas Anderson brings his signature style to the projectâblending suspense, emotional weight, and rich character dynamicsâwhich may draw critical attention. While it certainly has the hallmarks of a high-caliber drama, One Battle After Another seems more focused on telling a tight, character-driven story than chasing awards. That said, with the talent involved, it wouldnât be surprising if it ends up in the conversation during awards season.

Sinners (2025) is a bold, genre-blending film that fuses supernatural horror with rich musical drama, all set in the haunting backdrop of 1930s Mississippi. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie follows twin brothersâplayed by Michael B. Jordanâwho return to their hometown to open a juke joint and escape their violent pasts. What unfolds is a slow-burning, atmospheric story layered with blues, gospel, and soul music that doesnât just underscore the scenesâit drives the emotion and tension. The visuals are lush and haunting, and the story avoids cheap scares in favor of deeper psychological and cultural unease.
What makes Sinners stand out is its emotional depth and originality. Instead of relying on franchise familiarity or overused horror tropes, it dives into themes of redemption, racial trauma, faith, and family legacy with sincerity and craft. Jordan delivers a nuanced dual performance, and the supporting cast brings authenticity to the storyâs gritty, soulful tone. Critically acclaimed and a box office hit, Sinners has earned major awards and resonated with audiences for being more than just a horror filmâitâs a powerful, character-driven experience that lingers long after the credits roll. This film has a near perfect score on RT from both the critics and audience.

This week, we break down Happy Gilmore 2 exclusive to Netflixâa sequel decades in the making thatâs equal parts nostalgic tribute and overstuffed spectacle. While it brings back familiar faces and some laugh-out-loud moments, the film often feels more focused on cameos than character. Longtime fans may enjoy the nods to the original, but newcomers might be left wondering what all the fuss is about.
We explore whether the movie captures the heart and chaos of the 1996 classic, or if it plays too safe with recycled gags and modern distractions. Does it earn its place in the Sandler legacyâor just ride the wave of nostalgia? Tune in for our mostly spoiler-free take on the hits, the misses, and where this sequel lands in the comedy hall of fame.

Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, born Terry Bollea in 1953, skyrocketed to global fame in the 1980s as the face of WWF's golden era. From his legendary showdown with AndrĂŠ the Giant at WrestleMania III to starring in Rocky III and headlining Hogan Knows Best, Hogan blended sports entertainment with pop culture like no one else.
His larger-than-life persona, catchphrases like âWhatcha gonna do, brother?â and his role in launching the nWo in WCW cemented him as a true disruptor in the wrestling industry. Hogan also broke the mold as a crossover celebrity, starring in films like No Holds Barred and Suburban Commando, all while battling in-ring legends like Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, and The Rock. His second WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2020 as part of the nWo was a full-circle moment, marking a legacy that defined the modern wrestling narrative.
But behind the spotlight was a man facing mounting personal and health challenges. A highly publicized scandal in 2015 led to his WWE exit and the loss of key endorsements, though he later returned amid controversy. In his final years, Hogan underwent over 25 surgeries, battled blood cancer, and dealt with strained family tiesâall while trying to launch a new wrestling league, Real American Freestyle. Tragically, on July 24, 2025, he passed away at age 71 following a cardiac arrest, with atrial fibrillation and leukemia contributing to his death.
Yet even in his final moments, Hogan stayed focused on his next big idea. Tributes poured in across the world, and Florida officially declared August 1st Hulk Hogan Day. Love him or hate him, Hulk Hogan was a content machine, a branding genius, and a viral force who redefined what it meant to be a wrestling superstar in the age of spectacle.

Ozzy Osbourneâs life was a thunderous symphony of chaos, triumph, and resilience. From co-founding Black Sabbath in 1968 and birthing heavy metal with groundbreaking albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality, to launching a wildly successful solo career marked by anthems like âCrazy Train,â Ozzy constantly redefined rock rebellion.
His career was equally infamousâbiting off a batâs head on stage, snorting ants, and surviving near-death experiences, including the tragic loss of guitarist Randy Rhoads. With Sharon Osbourne by his side, he reinvented himself again in the '90s through Ozzfest, which ran over two decades, and MTVâs The Osbournes, which humanized the âPrince of Darknessâ for a new generation.
In later years, Ozzy battled Parkinsonâs disease and multiple health setbacks but still returned for a historic final Black Sabbath reunion show on July 5, 2025, performing seated on a bat-themed throne in Birmingham. Just 17 days later, he passed away at 76, leaving behind a legacy that merged mayhem, genius, and unexpected vulnerability.
This episode dives deep into the unforgettable highs and crushing lowsâfrom his wildest interviews and family drama to his cultural legacy and final farewell. Long live the Madman.

âUntold: The Liver King,â directed by Joe Pearlman, is a gripping 68-minute episode from Netflixâs Untold documentary series that dives into the rise and fall of Brian âLiver Kingâ Johnson. Known for his primal lifestyle, raw organ-meat diet, and hyper-masculine branding, Johnson built a massive social media following and a supplement empire generating over $100 million annually.
The documentary blends satire with introspection as it explores his extravagant personaâcomplete with meat feasts, caveman aesthetics, and dramatic horseback stuntsâalongside his personal background and family dynamics. At the heart of the film is Johnsonâs shocking steroid scandal: after long denying performance-enhancing drug use, leaked emails and a public confession revealed he was spending over $11,000 a month on steroids and HGH.
The film ultimately acts as both a cautionary tale about the dangers of influencer culture and health misinformation, and a character study of a man who, even after being exposed, remains a captivating and controversial figure. This has also now spilled into a very public battle between The Liver King & Joe Rogan, wild stuff!
I also discuss my own peronal experience with the Carnivore Diet and what it did for me.

Hollywood's perfect storm has arrived in the form of Disney's live-action Snow White remake, a film that may go down in history as one of the studio's most spectacular failures. With a staggering production and marketing budgets, this reimagining of the 1937 classic is projected to loose eye watering amounts of money.
At the heart of this catastrophe lies a fundamental disconnect between filmmakers and audience expectations. The original Snow White wasn't just any film â it was Walt Disney's revolutionary gamble that changed animation forever. Disney mortgaged his family home to complete what industry insiders mockingly called "Disney's Folly," only to see it earn $8 million during the Great Depression and establish his studio as an entertainment powerhouse.
What went wrong with the remake? The trouble began well before release when lead actress Rachel Zegler made comments dismissing the original as "weird" and criticizing its love story, calling the prince "a guy who literally stalks her." This set the tone for a production that seemed determined to distance itself from rather than honor its source material. The film underwent multiple delays and changes, particularly around the portrayal of the Seven Dwarves, suggesting a production lacking clear creative vision.
The audience response has been historically brutal, with the film currently holding a 1.6/10 rating on IMDB from over 350,000 reviewers â one of the lowest scores for any major studio release. Reviews consistently mention "lifeless" scripts, "artificial" dialogue, "uninspired" performances, and visual effects that fail to create the magic expected from Disney.
This cautionary tale offers a powerful lesson for studios: when reimagining beloved classics that have maintained cultural relevance for generations, respect for the source material isn't optional â it's essential. As we've seen with successful adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog, listening to audience feedback and honoring what made the original special creates a path to both artistic and commercial success.

As I review the latest kids movie taking the world by storm:
"Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! Four misfits--Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)--find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative... the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world."
The film as already made over $552m globaly in less than two weeks and has become the most successful video game based movie in history!
This film had elements of The Labyrinth, The Matrix & Tron; however it definitely stands on its own two feet despite some similarities.
This is what happens when you make a kids movie that stays true to its story and avoids adding in politics or changing a storyline.

Jim Morrison - The Doors - 1991
Doc Holiday - Tombstone - 1993
Batman/Bruce Waye - Batman Forever - 1995

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, "Avatar: The Way of Water" begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
The movie cost over $2bn to make and it has just crossed the $1bn mark at the box office, make sure you check this one out at the cinema.

As I review the much-anticipated prequel to the hit series Game of Thrones.Â
House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, as we follow the Targaryen's who rule Westeros with a whole range of different size dragons.
Season 1 is focuses on Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is the only heir to the Iron Throne, which in itself is controversial.Â
Daemon Targaryen or The Dark Prince is an incredible character played by Matt Smith. For a first season, it has absolutely knocked it out of the park!Â

This movie will more than likely be ranked quite high in my top ten movies for 2022.
Completley in German, the film tells the story of a young soldier Paul, from the excitment of enlisting in the army, to the bloody end of World War 1.
This is a straight to Netflix release and I must say its one of the best war movies I have ever seen, and probably is the best Netflix film that has been released.
Be sure to watch it loud on a big screen or play use headphones.

Welcome back to DMR for another Rewind Review!
What if Skynet became self aware, locked onto humans as its greatest threat, however instead of a full scale Terminator apocalypse, it snuck in quietly through the back door in a sucluded research facility, deep in the mountains?
Well Ex Machina tells a tale just like that, a fantasic AI/Robot Sci Fi film that took the world by storm back in 2014, fantasic cast and acting!
Also, stick around for my thoughts on a new AI movie about a pyschotic doll/robot due to hit the screens in 2023 called M3gan!

Technically, this is the sixth film in the franchise, and as we know, when you get to this many films, the impact of the movies themes can become diluted.

Welcome back to DMR, as I review the much anticipated sequel to the original Top Gun film from 1986.
Movie Synopsis:
"After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navyâs top aviators, Pete âMaverickâ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.Â
When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: âRooster,â the son of Maverickâs late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka âGooseâ.Â
Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it."
Will this surpass its predecessor, 36 years on; with all the advancements in film technology or will it suffer from the dreaded sequalistis?Â
