He served as Waymo’s Chief Engineer for Future Vehicle Programs and has been a Research Scientist at MIT Media Lab. From 2012 to 2017, he was Qualcomm’s VP of Strategic Development, responsible for wireless automotive solutions. Prior to this, he led GM’s Electric Networked Vehicle (EN-V), the world’s first drivable vehicles to demonstrate today’s accepted vision of future mobility (and extensively deployed at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo). He led GM’s Autonomy, Hy-wire and Sequel “skateboard” electric vehicle concepts, now widely adopted by the Auto Industry, and has 50 patents. He is co-author of “Reinventing the Automobile: Personal Urban Mobility for the 21st Century”, with Larry Burns and the late Bill Mitchell (MIT Press, 2010). Before joining GM in 2000, he led Chrysler’s gasoline fuel cell vehicle development. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame as a Young Leader in 2000 and was one of Automotive News’ inaugural “Electrifying 100” in 2011.

Before joining PACCAR, he worked as Director of Product Development and Engineering with A123 Systems where he led engineering teams in the US and Germany. Dr. Stephenson was also Chief Engineer for product development and validation at automotive supplier Behr and was instrumental in the expansion of Behr’s test facilities to support their North American automotive business.

Early in his career, Dr. Stephenson worked as a computational fluid dynamics simulation engineer at Mercedes Benz Research in Stuttgart, Germany, an engineering manager at Fluent Inc. (now Ansys) and an executive at CD-adapco (now Siemens)

At the PACCAR Technical Center, Dr. Stephenson leads teams responsible for product validation of Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks and for development, calibration and testing of PACCAR diesel and alternative fuel powertrains for North America.

Dr. Stephenson earned a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University.

In this episode Stephan sits down with Joe Grace to discuss global mobility trends, the role of hybrids in the future, the next advancement in passenger vehicles, and differentiating between brands.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a growing category, with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended electric vehicles featuring gas engine generators for electrical power. These vehicles have variable-sized batteries, ranging from the minimum to some in some cases. Larger batteries can provide the EV experience if the consumer plugs in and charges up while consuming the battery, allowing the gas engine generator to generate electrical power. The complex emission requirements and electrification issues make EVs challenging to achieve. Some manufacturers strive to achieve a fully electric solution with zero emissions while providing the necessary range. However, North America's truck market is particularly challenging, with pickup truck owners used to heavy payloads, towing, and long distances. The Cybertruck, a new offering from Ford and General Motors, aims to meet these consumer needs, but it is challenging to meet all their needs.

Manufacturers face challenges blending passenger cars with electric vehicles due to pressure on aerodynamics and energy efficiency. The general shape of sedans and crossover SUVs is similar, making it difficult to differentiate between them. The convergence of shape and performance is particularly challenging for electrified vehicles, which offer incredible performance numbers. To differentiate and maintain brand consistency while providing a unique experience, manufacturers must differentiate their products while still appealing to consumers.

Recently retired from Stellantis, Joseph M. Grace led the Physical and Functional Design & Integration organization. In this assignment Grace had responsibility for the global development of all Stellantis product programs from Concept Development, Virtual Engineering and Vehicle Integration through final Validation across the 14 Stellantis brands. The group has responsibility for all segments and global markets. Prior to this assignment, Grace led the Total Vehicle Integration organization at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles which led all vehicle development, integration and validation globally.

From 2018 to 2021, Grace was responsible for Maserati Product Development in Modena, Italy with full responsibility for Maserati and Alfa Romeo product programs. From 2012 to 2018 was responsible for Advanced Concepts and Platform Development at FCA. In this position, Grace led the creation phase for all future vehicle programs and the development of new architectures to support global applications.

Previously, he held the position of Vehicle Line Executive – Street and Racing Technology (SRT) and A/B Segment Vehicles, Chrysler Group. In this position, Grace was responsible for the engineering management of all current and future SRT vehicle platforms along with the on-track motorsports efforts for factory-supported motorsports teams. Grace was also responsible for A/B Segment Vehicle Programs.

First joining the former Chrysler Corporation in 1985 as a product engineer, Grace led numerous product programs in Body Engineering, Vehicle Integration, Manufacturing and Program Management.

Grace holds a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Michigan (1992), a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan-Dearborn (1987) and a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame (1985).

Argonne is focusing on the reliability of electric vehicle charging, particularly DC fast charging, as a benchmark for the success rate of refueling.

There must be a paradigm shift in how we think about refueling versus recharging. Some see the potential for electric vehicles to be an additional drag on the grid. However, if electric vehicles are connected to the grid, distributed batteries could be leveraged as a resource to stabilize and provide services. This shift in thinking about electric vehicle charging is a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient future.

Further energy savings opportunities are available with connected and automated vehicles. Extensive analysis and experimental work is underway, focusing on the impact of automated vehicles on traffic around the eco vehicle. While eco vehicles may be fuel-efficient, overall energy consumption may increase if they disrupt traffic flow.

The integration of AI, ADAS and ADS automated driving features has allowed for a more integrated view of systems of systems. Argonne is interested in how people engage with the system, as full automation is still a few years away. This could have larger energy implications than building the perfect system.

The focus on energy savings is not limited to edge cases but extends to the everyday, mundane cases that occur repeatedly. The lab is interested in understanding how people might engage with the system, as this could significantly impact overall energy consumption. The lab's engineering teams are working to understand how people might engage with the system and make informed decisions about adopting eco vehicles.

Dr. Thomas Wallner is the director of Argonne National Laboratory’s Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) division. His team leverages its groundbreaking experimental and analytical capabilities to accelerate the development of sustainable mobility and power technologies to achieve the aggressive U.S. decarbonization goals. TAPS focuses on conducting systematic and deep analyses of all sustainable mobility technologies for on-road vehicles including light-, medium- and heavy-duty, non-road construction, agriculture, mining, rail, marine, and aviation sectors as well as decarbonizing stationary power generation, including combined heat and power systems. TAPS expertise and capabilities provide workforce development, demonstration, and deployment of innovative solutions for decarbonization that will support our nation’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation and power generation future that benefits everyone.

Thomas holds a M.S. and Ph.D. from Graz University of Technology, Austria, has published more than 100 peer-reviewed technical papers including 30 journal papers and several book chapters. He is an active Fellow Grade member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and has been serving as a session organizer and chair at several national and international conferences.

The distribution yard is a crucial link in the supply chain, serving as a transition point between warehouses and the open road for over 20 billion tons of freight annually. However, inefficiencies and unsafe manual tasks in these yards have led to bottlenecks in the supply chain. Over the past three years, these inefficiencies have led to diesel trucks idling in the yard, waiting for trucks or trailers, causing delays of up to four hours.

Yard trucks contribute significantly to the global carbon footprint, emitting 3.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. The future of yard operations is autonomous and electric, eliminating manual tasks for greater efficiency and safety. The private, confined space of yard operations is ideal for autonomy. Commercializing heavy-duty trucks with EV technology is a great place to start, reducing emissions and supporting the adoption of sustainable freight transportation. This aligns with forward-looking enterprises aiming to reduce emissions by having all-electric fleets in the next 10-20 years.

Automating a yard involves more than just an autonomous truck. Outrider's product is a comprehensive system that addresses operational challenges for customers. It includes a mission control dashboard allowing customers to control trucks and moves within their yards. The dashboard has an API that integrates with the customer's yard management system, directing trucks and trailers accordingly. They also handle deployment, infrastructure, and dock doors, making it a complete turnkey solution. Our focus on automation makes our product a winning solution.

The focus is on the system's overall throughput for the whole yard, not the speed of the trucks. The truck uses cameras and LiDARS to scan and geo-locate trailers, increasing efficiency continuously. Previously, Bock was the Director of Vehicle Integration & Testing at Samsung Smart Machines, a part of Samsung Electronics, that developed a full-stack SoC- based ADAS platform solution for Tier1s and OEMs. He led teams responsible for the integration of the platform into the development & test vehicles, the data collection software and data collection operation as well as the validation and verification of the platform through Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) to Vehicle-in-the-loop (ViL) testing. In addition, he contributed to the SAE/DIN spec. 91381 as well as to a handful of SAE EDGE™ Research Reports about automated driving simulation & testing, HD Maps, and In-Vehicle User experience.

Bock has 20+ years of experience within the automotive industry. Prior to joining Samsung and Porsche, he worked at Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (1998-2018) where he contributed on the original Mercedes prototype for Internet in the vehicle, wireless communication for safety and infotainment (early DSRC), connected navigation, first iPod integration and multiple telematics concepts for show cars.

Bock was part of the team that developed the Mercedes-Benz Apps and launched them as a product in 2011. In the years following the launch, he worked on expanding the services and bringing them to all carlines and markets. From 2014 on he worked on the specification and pre-development of HD Maps and Localization for the Level 3 Highway Chauffeur Mercedes product, that was successfully handed over for development to the engineering group in Germany and is now in current S-Class as Drive Pilot product. After that, he worked on the Daimler/ Bosch project for “Urban Automated Driving” where he led the team on HD Maps and services for Level 4 Automated Driving.

Electrification is another significant focus for the Navy, as it aims to reduce the need for power sources like diesel engines and gas turbines. The power is consumed by shafts and used for various applications, such as propulsion, missile launch, and navigation systems.

Two challenges arise in a ship: weight and space. Engines need to be more power-dense. The uncrewed mission can last 90 days, ensuring no service is required. Early detection of combustion anomalies allows for additional centrifuge-driven solutions. Advanced technologies like Common rail and a complete fuel purification system are also included.

The Department of Defense faces significant costs due to diesel fuel, which accounts for 1% of the US's total fossil fuel use. The Navy and Marine Corps are the first to experience severe weather impacts and are the ones affected. To address this issue, the Navy is working on transitioning to carbon-neutral or carbon-free fuel. Additionally, they are working on monitoring engine behavior to provide predictive maintenance and parts for ships. The development of the highest power density engine is also being considered.

The automotive industry faces challenges in managing software and hardware complexity, especially in the context of over-the-air updates. OEMs need help managing a bifurcated world with 100 ECUs and need to integrate software updates into their stacks. However, the future of record vehicle architecture will simplify this process. Chip manufacturers must find affordable platforms for their products, but it doesn't mean they can afford it for a million vehicles. The biggest takeaway from the last 5 to 10 years is to reduce hardware and software complexity, then reduce service complexity on the back end. Engineers must constantly reduce and make better, as they love to create and add new features, but they must also continually reduce and improve.

Integrating technology into the vehicle is challenging, as it requires a balance between the car, cloud, and motor contract ecosystems to ensure optimal functionality and customer satisfaction. The challenge is not just the car itself but also the customer experience, as they may wait for their car to start on their mobile app after just a few seconds. Tire sensors are essential for the future of mobility. They provide information on tire pressure, wear, and even the health of the tire. Advanced sensor technology, such as RFID sensors, can help identify a tire and its type. This information can also determine if the tire is the best fit for the vehicle. Tire sensors also measure pressure, temperature, and footprint length. All of this information can be used for many different applications. Tires have become an additional sensor for vehicles.

Goodyear uses data from tire sensors and other vehicle sensors to provide information to service fleet managers. This information can reduce costs, increase uptime, and improve vehicle stability and activities. Goodyear also uses this data to connect service providers with fleets and fleet managers to turn around vehicles and increase their uptime quickly. The company has a proactive solution in Europe that provides information from different tire sensors. The data can be submitted to OEMs directly, and Goodyear is also working on edge computing IoT.

Werner discusses the use of advanced sensors and tires in commercial vehicles. Sightline basis, a tire intelligence platform, is being implemented in fleets in Europe. The industry is transitioning towards more autonomy in the vehicle, and different levels of autonomy are well-defined. Traditional OEMs are moving towards a higher degree and a higher level of autonomy. Soon, there will be OEMs that do this type of information for their system and also to inform their customers.

When considering the detection of ice on the road in autonomous vehicles, tire data can assist. Once on the ice, there is not much to do anymore, and the car is already veering and swerving. Sensors in the tire work with the rest of the sensor suite of road prediction services, such as camera systems and light assist to recondition algorithms accordingly. The information is used to detect friction potential.

Previously, Reed was vice president, Platform and Technology Engineering, where he was responsible for Powertrain, Electrical, and Audio/IT engineering groups. He also served as the Overseas Chief Vehicle Engineer (OCVE) for Nissan LEAF, Murano and Pathfinder as well as the INFINITI QX60, at NTCNA.

Reed joined Nissan North America in 1988 as an entry-level engineer in the body design group. From 2011 to 2013, he worked in safety and then exterior/accessories while being OCVE of trucks. He also spent more than two years in Japan to help lead development on an all-new Nissan Murano. From 1999 to 2007, Reed was self-employed as a home builder and ran a small automotive parts supplier.

Stephan enters the world of EcoCAR EV Challenge with Jesse Alley the Senior Program Manager and Kayla Hamilton a current PhD student at The University of Alabama. In this episode they discuss the valuable experience of the EcoCAR Challenge, the future of autonomous mobility and staying relevant with the trends of the automotive industry.

Jesse Alley is the EcoCAR EV Challenge Senior Program Manager at Argonne National Lab where he is responsible for day-to-day leadership of EV Challenge activities, establishing and managing the program’s industry sponsorship efforts and is the chair of the Faculty Advisory Board. He has worked at Argonne on Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs) in a variety of roles for more than a decade since graduating from Virginia Tech a Bachelors and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering (2010 & 2012 respectively). During his time at Virginia Tech, Jesse participated in the AVTC program as a student for four years, which inspired him to pursue a career that was focused on people rather than products. This passion was (and still is) the core motivation for Jesse to continue the mission to train the next generation of automotive engineers via the AVTC program.

Kayla Hamilton is a current PhD student in electrical engineering at The University of Alabama and holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science. She has been involved in The University of Alabama’s EcoCAR team since the end of EcoCAR 3 as an undergraduate student, starting as an electrical team member and then moving to the Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) team with the start of the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge. Prior to her current team role as Engineering Manager in the EV Challenge, she spent two years as the UA team’s CAV lead combining her passion for autonomy and mentoring students interested in the automotive field. Her research interests include vehicle to everything (V2X) connectivity and automation with a focus on energy consumption optimization strategies for cooperative adaptive cruise control.

In this episode Stephan sits down with Craig Renneker VP of Engineering at American Axle & Manufacturing to discuss integrating the gearbox, inverter and motor, increasing the rpms of the e-motors, applications for both permanent magnet and induction motors and more.

Craig is strong believer that the future of electric drives lies in deeper levels of integration between the inverter, motor and gearbox. As such, they are developing all three from scratch here in their Advanced Technology Development Center in Detroit. AAM also shares a common interest with AVL in developing high-speed motors and a major enabler to cost, volume and weight reduction. Craig has spoken to AVL’s Hummingbird team before and is excited about what they are doing.

AAM’s inverter technology is unique in the industry today as they are using TO247 discrete MOSFET switches arranged in a ring, attached directly to the motor end windings and cooled with the same oil that cools the motor and lubricates the gearbox. They have had this running in demonstration vehicles and with their first paid customer (REE in Israel) for nearly 4 years now. Craig presented on the technology at the CTI electric drive conference and other venues. This technology was the centerpiece of AAM’s first display at the Consumer Electronics Show in January of 2023.

Craig spent 30 years in automatic transmission development – from 3-speeds to 10-speeds. In his 19 years at Ford, he developed and launched 18 all-new automatic transmissions, hybrids and electric drives. He retired from Ford in December, 2018 with the Mustang Mach-E electric drive as his last active project. He’s been with AAM now for 4-1/2 years and focuses his time today on their “Gen 5” and “Gen 6” electric drives.

Craig is married with 6 kids and lives nearby in Salem Township. He and his are also foster parents with three girls (ages 6, 5 and 3-months) living with them now. He owns 7 motorcycles and enjoys adventure motorcycle riding. I have a 7-day trip coming in September crossing Colorado with 10 buddies riding mostly on Jeep trails through the mountain passes.

Electrified aircraft share some similarities with the automotive industry but have other significant challenges and differences they face as well. In this episode Stephan sits down with Peter Savagian of Electrified Future, Inc. to discuss the electrified aircraft industry. 

Peter Savagian is Principal at Electrified Future, Inc., his EV and related services advisory company working for firms in the electrification of transport, mobility and related services.   He also works as Sr Advisor to McKinsey and Company, and Advisor to DNX Ventures.  

Pete has done pioneering work in the EV industry for more than three decades. At General Motors, he was Chief Engineer and General Director of Propulsion systems. He led the systems engineering of propulsion systems as well as the industrialization and supply chain development for electric motors, power electronics, and for battery controls electronics. Pete’s work there included the 1996 GM EV1, a range of hybrid vehicles, the Chevy Volt, and the 2017 Chevy Bolt EV.  

Pete has also led the entire engineering and purchasing activities at EV startups Faraday Future and Canoo.  He did the same at Electric Aircraft startup Ampaire.  He is presently on the board of advisors at Sibros Technologies, an automotive software connectivity company and at H3X, an aviation propulsion company.  He is affiliated as a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. Pete holds 47 patents, has authored 17 technical publications and is regularly engaged as a speaker at SAE, IEEE, other industry events and for board meetings.  His BS in Engineering is from the University of Wisconsin, his MS from the University of Southern California, and his MBA from Duke University.

In this episode, Stephan sits down with Paulo Guedes-Pinto, VP of Technology at Infinitum to discuss their PCB stator and other developments e-motor technology.

By etching copper coils directly onto the PCB stator, Infinitum eliminates the heavy steel core and copper windings of conventional motors. Ramesh Natarajan is 34 years old. Before moving to Europe in 2010, he completed his bachelor's of mechanical engineering in India. Gaining a deep understanding of thermal design of the lithium-ion cell and the safety aspect, he moved to Webasto, one of the world-leading TIER-I automotive suppliers. Having held different roles from thermal management expert, chief engineer, technical sales, he finally ended up in the USA leading the battery division market-entry activities. After a short stint in a software startup in Germany, he is now the Director of Battery at Senec GmbH, one of the market giants in the home-storage space. Over the last 11 years, he has enjoyed working on innovative lithium-battery programs. He loves photography and traveling.

AVL recently partnered with Michigan Technological University, American Center for Mobility (ACM), Borg Warner Inc. (BW), Navistar (NAV) and Traffic Technology Services (TTS) for a Connected Cohort Optimization project funded by Department of Energy, EEMS: Energy Efficient Mobility Systems, VTO: Vehicle Technologies Office.

The project is answering this fundamental question “What can the synergy of fusing connectivity and automation in multiple vehicles that aren't just light duty vehicles or mixing heavy duty and light duty together? How can they work together as a team cooperatively to reduce energy on different infrastructures?” In this week’s episode Stephan Tarnutzer is joined by Darrell Robinette, MTU Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics. In this episode they discuss these answers and more.

The project aimed to:

  • Develop co-simulation environment to engineer improved energy consumption synergy on various infrastructure scales with mixed vehicle propulsion, connectivity, drive automation technology levels
  • Integrate expanded connectivity data sharing and link cloud based optimization into LD-HD CAV vehicle test fleet
  • Validate models and demonstrate 10-50% energy reductions at intersection, arterial roadway and limited access highway scenarios

Darrell Robinette, MTU Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics: Darrell joined the MTU in August of 2016 after nine years at General Motors working in the Powertrain division. His engineering roles included powertrain noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), powertrain controls, calibration, development and validation and new electrification product engineering. Darrell holds 15 granted US patents in powertrain and driveline engineering from his time at GM. In returning to Michigan Tech, Darrell’s objectives are to educate and train engineering students for careers in propulsion system engineering through courses and research in mobility systems electrification, propulsion system integration and connected and automated vehicle controls and optimization for energy consumption.

The SuperTurbo is a mechanically driven turbocharger. It is capable of exchanging power to and from the engine crankshaft and, effectively is an on-demand boost device.
