Pam Swan is a retired educator who is still working with students a few days a week. Her heart and soul for teaching lies in her belief that each of her students are lovable and capable. Michael worked with students who have special needs and after being in the non-traditional classroom for over 2 decades, he is recently retired and performing hypnosis full time. Connection and community are the most important things in Monte’s classroom. He has been in the classroom for 28 years and is still revolutionizing! Erin & Rick were THRILLED to get to sit down with Oklahoma’s 2023 Teacher of the Year, Traci Manuel! What a gift Traci is to our state! We discuss Traci’s non-traditional path to get into education. She shares her love and passion for English and teaching English to all grades of students. And she talks about her mission as Teacher of the Year and what she’s doing to reach educators. Traci, you are something special and we are excited to get to share our conversation!

Erin & Rick had the pleasure of having a conversation with our friend, Karen Workun. Karen’s story is featured in the “Relate, then Educate” book and what a story it is! We discussed the power of reading meaningful literature and how by reading the stories of others, we can step into their shoes and walk around a little bit. We explored some great ways that Karen builds and implements a strong classroom community and culture each year with her students. And this year, Karen is switching things up! She’s going to be in the business of teaching teachers… while making sure to visit her first love, the classroom, as much as possible.

Erin & Rick had a truly wonderful chat with JJ Jedamski. JJ is something special. He is a school culture master! JJ is a former Director of School Culture and worked to completely transform both the student culture and the faculty culture in his district. He now travels around the country inspiring students and teachers.
Erin & Rick got to sit down and have a great chat with freshmen teacher, Jennifer Phenicie. Jennifer teaches freshmen English & Leadership. We talked about what makes this grade so special, classroom management strategies, and some wonderful ways to intentionally connect with our students. We even talked about educational student travel programs and what great opportunities they are for teachers and students to see the world!

Rick and Erin got to sit down IN PERSON with Molly Gillispie, a phenomenal OK public school teacher. Molly teaches 5th grade and calls it her “sweet spot”. 5th graders are an interesting bunch- they’re amusing, full of challenges, grown up (but are still very much kids), able to have deep talks, can share in big and small laughs, and are just a lot of fun. Molly shares some fantastic relationship-building and classroom management strategies. She also has the honor of working with a world-class team of 5th grade teachers and recognizes what a difference that can make.
At the OSDE’s 2022 MTSS Winter Conference, we spoke to Amanda Sellers about her role as Director of School Climate at the Oklahoma State Dept. of Education. Amanda and her team offer trauma-informed assistance to schools. Together, they work to identify any existing issues and then decide on a game plan. They really focus on an “it takes all of us” approach.

Erin and Rick got to have a chat with fellow Oklahoma educator, Jordann Hardin. After heartbreak, Jordann connected with Start Healing Together and, together, they worked to get proper language incorporated into her district’s bereavement policies for pregnancy loss. And now, teachers in her district who may unfortunately need this bereavement leave are more supported to do so thanks to Jordann’s hard work.

Erin & Rick got to chat with their good friends, Jess & Cheryl. Jess Jernegan and Cheryl Wilkinson are both former teachers who now work administratively for Bixby Public Schools. They are big-time supporters of teachers and work tirelessly to establish and build a strong school culture in their district. The RTE Classroom Management Team sits down together to talk all about managing classrooms! Erin and Rick chat with Katie Kinder and Jo Lein. This team of 4 will be leading our Classroom Management Workshops in Tulsa and OKC later this month! In this episode, they share the importance of building relationships, holding students to high standards, being true to who we are as people in our classrooms, and “living in the ‘and’”. They share some things that have worked well and laugh/cringe at the behavior management blunders they’ve all made in their teaching careers.
A few months ago, Erin and Rick sat down with two lifelong educator heroes- Nancy Davis & Cindi Hemm. These two are legendary! During our recording, we had to cut the episode short with the plan to come back to record part 2 another time. Sadly, we were never able to do that, as Nancy Davis recently passed away. So instead, we finished up this wonderful episode with tributes to the incredible Nancy Davis from several of her former students, former parents, and even her hairdresser! Erin & Rick have a fun chat with Kyra Carby, a public Montessori teacher to 1st-3rd graders. As a chef, Kyra never ever intended on being a teacher. It was not in the cards… or was it? Rick & Erin sat down with Oyate Burnette. Oyate brings her Lakota culture and heritage to her 1st graders on the Rosebud Reservation every day! Oyate teaches in the same community in which she was raised and taught. We talk about teaching culture, teaching culturally, respect, and effects of generational and historical trauma on her students.
Erin chats with one of her dear friends from childhood, Jaime Lee. Jaime is a 9th grade history teacher and loves her students so well. We talk about what SEL is, why it is so very important for our students, what it looks like in schools, and we discover tips on ways to implement SEL into your classroom activities and lessons.
Erin and Rick get to chat with Jackie Mancinelli. Jackie is a high school English & SEL teacher in New Jersey. She founded an organization called “Start Healing Together”, which provides information and support to help alleviate the stigmas surrounding pregnancy loss and infertility. We discuss our personal experiences, ways to take care of yourself as you’re grieving, how to support colleagues who are walking through grief, and how to navigate teaching through it all.
Erin & Rick talk to Dr. Casey Jakubowski from rural New York. Casey is an expert in rural education. We discuss the unique and enriching educational opportunities that rural education allows, the challenges rural education can present, and the wonderful communities surrounding these schools.
Erin & Rick connected with Dr. Bryan Duke to discuss the current state of teacher education. Dr. Duke is the interim Dean of the College of Education & Professional Studies @ UCO (University of Central OK in Edmond). We discuss interest in education careers, teacher ed, mentorship, pay, demanding hours, and expectations
Erin & Rick chat with Molly Patterson, a 6th grade English teacher in her third year of teaching. This has been such a hard year for so many and we dig into it. We discuss the many of the joys and struggles that come with being a young teacher, appreciating each and every one of our students, and working our contract hours.
