Finding JOY and living life to the fullest in the midst of a terminal illness.

Would you believe it is possible to find JOY and live life to the fullest in the midst of a terminal illness?

In this episode brain cancer survivor, Wendy Santana, joins us again but this time she’s a guest interviewer. As you may recall, Wendy is known in the brain tumor community (and beyond) for the work she does with her blog, 2nd Chance 2 Live.

Wendy interviews Maria Quiban Whitesell of “Good Day LA/FOX 11 Morning News” and author of You Can’t Do It Alone: A Widow’s Journey Through Loss, Grief and Life After.

In 2014, following a trip to Paris where her husband, Sean, began displaying odd behaviors Maria insisted that he visit a doctor. Within two weeks of returning home, Sean had an MRI and soon after received the news that would turn their life upside down. Sean had Glioblastoma – the deadliest form of brain cancer! Their son Gus was only three-years-old.

Thrust into the role of primary caregiver, Maria discusses how she and Sean made the decision to choose JOY and why that was so important for Gus. Together with their family, they made the last 18 months of Sean’s life count in every way possible by embracing the good days, laughing, and finding purpose. In fact, they did more living during those 18 months than many of us do in 18 years.

Tune in to hear the great tips Maria shares about dealing with grief, finding a support system, and preparing children for the difficult conversations surrounding illness and death. Plus, you’ll also discover the special role that Bruce Springsteen played in Maria and Sean’s love story.

She shares how sharing her story has helped her and other globally. She talks about how she utilizes her blog, “2nd Chance 2 Live” as a resource and a platform to elevate other brain tumor and cancer survivors. She provides details about the four incredible individuals she has met through her interviews and awareness efforts who have since lost their lives to the most aggressive form of brain cancer, GBM. This leads to a discussion about the need for breakthroughs since there isn’t a cure for brain cancer. Wendy and Todd (along with other brain tumor survivors) are representing team “2nd Chance 2 Live” for the upcoming BT5K (Breakthrough for Brain Tumors 5K run/walk) on 11/5/22. The goal is to raise money for the American Brain Tumor Association to continue providing free patient/caregiver support and information along with research grants around the country (and beyond). Since 2006 the BT5K events have raised over $33 million for brain tumor research and patient support services.

We are impacted by fear, anxiety and trauma in life. When we think of trauma, we think of some horrific traumatic event that may have occurred on ones life. Which is true, but some don’t often think of the constant seemingly smaller traumas that occur all the time.  The miserable marriage, the challenging job.  It can be anything that the mind and brain perceive as traumatic.      What often happens is we begin to retreat into the confines of our thoughts in our mind. A safe quiet place. A place of escape.  Or A place of fear.  This place serves to protect us from the perceived threat.   On a much simpler, level for many of us get caught up and absorbed in our fear and anxiety. So much  that we are over-consumed with ourselves and worries. Blocking us off from interacting or connecting with the rest of the world.    Listen to hear 4 powerful strategies to get out our your head and live life.
