Dive into the wisdom of Hildegard von Bingen, a beacon of female empowerment in medicine. Amid the male-dominated medical narratives, Hildegard's story shines, illuminating the enduring value of holistic health.
Who is Hildegard? A 12th-century German abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, healer - a woman of many talents, epitomizing female resilience and intellect. Despite facing hurdles, she penned invaluable texts on natural history and medicinal practices that continue to influence healing arts.
Hildegard's vision was truly holistic. She recognized exercise as key to physical and mental health, emphasized the role of nature, and upheld the unity of mind, body, and spirit - ideas that resonate powerfully today.
Her teachings live on in modern integrative healthcare, testifying to their timeless relevance. As we traverse the intricate healthcare landscape, Hildegard's wisdom inspires us towards a more inclusive, holistic approach to well-being.
Jeni Barcelos' life changed dramatically after contracting Covid. Initially, she battled severe symptoms like difficulty breathing and persistent headaches. However, the struggle didn't end there - a second wave of neurological issues hit, causing vision problems, vertigo, and sensitivity to certain environments.
Despite the daily challenges, Jeni found strategies to manage her condition. She meticulously tracks her medications, employs anti-inflammatory substances, and maintains an exercise routine designed to keep her heart rate under 120 bpm.
Surprisingly, even something as simple as wearing earplugs provided relief from her neurological symptoms.
Online communities and functional neurologists have been invaluable resources, offering solace and insight into her condition's complexities.
In this episode, we delve into Jeni's personal journey with long Covid, discussing her symptoms, management strategies, and the importance of gut health in combating such conditions.
We also touch on how AI tools and digital platforms can aid the understanding of complex medical concepts. Tune in to learn more about Jeni's inspiring story.

We all have off days. It can be hard to find mental balance, whether it's due to a stressful situation, personal life issues, or just being in a funk.
The good news is that there is one practice that you can use to help improve your low mood—taking in the good. Taking in the good is a 4-step process developed by Dr. Rick Hanson. Its main focus is to take the time to recognize and savour beneficial experiences. It is supported by a peer-reviewed study on learning to learn from positive experiences, published via the Journal of Positive Psychology.
In this episode of Punks Unite Podcast, I share how to apply these steps to your day-to-day life.
Taking in the good isn't always easy when we're feeling down or overwhelmed by daily stressors but making an effort towards actively recognizing small moments of happiness throughout our days will go a long way towards improving our overall wellbeing and mental balance.
Try incorporating this 4-step practice into your daily routine so that when those low days come around again, you'll have more tools available for coping well!

Being fit and healthy goes much deeper than surface level. Yet, we’re told by society that the epitome of “fit and healthy” is about how you look and the lifestyle that you lead.
Take the Yoga industry, for example.
This boomed in western society in the late 90s and 00s.
An ancient practice of southern India that overtime was commercialised and a lifestyle created promoting elitism, the Yoga body, a range of athleisure, and labels and ideals that excluded anyone who didn’t fit.
I don’t believe that when it reached the west in the late 19th century, it was ever intended to evolve in this way. Still, I’m afraid this is just another example of bullshit ideals being forced upon us by the Patriarchy.
The Patriarchy seeps into every aspect of our life. I mean, it’s just so deep-seated in our culture that I’m not sure I’ll be able to unlearn everything before I die (hopefully of old age).
“So what about Punk Rock Yoga then?”
Over the years, I’ve been asked many things about Punk Rock Yoga:
And while I do teach it to punk music at festivals and special events, which is considered by some to be un-Yogic, it is so much more than that.
It’s taken me years to feel comfortable speaking about my true meaning of Punk Rock Yoga, and this is what this episode is all about.

Have you had this thought? "I feel like I'm never going to be able to let go.". If you're ready to leave it all behind, this episode is for you.
"We have to regularly let go of part of our life every day, and every time that we do, we survive and we get a little bit stronger."
I've been thinking a lot about letting go recently. It's something that I've always struggled with, because I've always seen it as losing something or giving up. But I'm starting to realize that sometimes letting go is the best thing you can do for yourself. It can be incredibly freeing and it can help you to move on from things that are no longer good for you. It can be a really tough process though, and it's easy to slip back into old habits. But if you can find a way to accept what isn't in your control and focus on what you do want, it can be really transformative.
In this episode, I share the actions I take to help me to let go of what no longer serves me and find inner freedom.

Habits occur after the continuous repetition of an action; they become a behaviour. Sometimes they arise to provide comfort when experiencing an unpleasant feeling (or avoiding the real issue) or to ensure brain efficiency, so we don’t need to re-learn everything.
Half the time we don’t even realise what we are doing is out of habit.
In this episode I talk about why you can't simply categorise habits as 'good' or 'bad' and why identifying them can help you to change them.

How often are you asked “Hey, how are you?” in which you reply “I’m fine” when deep down inside, you know you're not.
For some reason, many of us have this shame hanging over our heads that we aren’t allowed to not be okay because in the grand scheme of things we’re alright.
We sugar coat our own feelings because “I’m not as worse off as others” or we say to ourselves “it’s not so bad”.In this episode, I talk about the heart, our emotions and why it's okay to not be okay, AND how you can use the practice of cultivating joy to find inner alignment.Today's episode is part of a series where we focus on how to lead in your own life.Next steps

I see so many people making false assumptions about what it takes to learn to live with anxiety and overcome negative self-talk.
Conformity Culture and the single-brain society can make us feel that because we are on the mental health spectrum, that we’re not normal. And because of this, they do everything in their power to ‘normalise’ it in a way that is actually insensitive and unhelpful.
You’re not weird if you are on the mental health spectrum. You are You.
So, I’m debunking the 3 BIGGEST MYTHS ABOUT ANXIETY + NEGATIVE SELF-TALK, right now…

How do we break through our barriers and make a positive change?
Half of the time we prevent ourselves from moving forward. It can be for all sorts of reasons, or at least we will come up with all sorts of reasons!
Sometimes it’s even hard to identify WHAT those barriers are. For me, usually it is that something just doesn’t feel right or seem right. And I’ll admittedly get frustrated that I’m not more intune with myself.
Often, to break down our barriers and make positive change we need to tap into our personal power,
In today’s episode, I share ways in which you can break down your internal barriers by tapping into your personal power using Body, Mind and Soul.
Here’s a brief interpretation of Body, Mind and Soul in my opinion:
The Body – the physical body, in this case I’m focusing on your energy centre, the navel centre and solar plexus; your abdominal area.
The Mind – part of the brain, the witnessing of the Self, the part of you that you train through meditation and breathwork (to control ‘prana’ aka energy, using the breath).
The Soul – your heart, the creator of emotional energy, the controller of blood pressure and hormonal influence.

Stress and anxiety can sometimes have a physical manifestation. For me it is a right right shoulder, and knots in my upper back and neck.
In today's episode I take you through a moving relaxation/ meditation practice. The session is about 20 mins long, but you can use elements of it to eas tension throughout your day.
The key is, do the movement in time with the breath and then finish with a meditation where you notice the sounds around you and the sensations in your body, before bringing your awareness back into the space you are in.
This is certainly no quick fix, but it definitely helps to relief the tension in body and mind.

Do you know what your habits are?
If you sit and think about it, you could probably come up with a few. This is when you'll realize that half the time we don’t even realize what we are doing is out of habit 😲.
What are habits?
Well, habits occur after the continuous repetition of an action; they become a behaviour. Sometimes they arise to provide comfort when experiencing an unpleasant feeling (or avoiding the real issue) or to ensure brain efficiency, so we don’t need to re-learn everything (so really, not all habits are bad).
This week's episode of Yoga Punx Unite Live begins with a 15-minute talk covering:
✨What are habits?
✨How to change a habit.
✨How to identify a habit.
Followed by a 20-minute Kundalini Yoga inspired practice specifically focussed on disrupting both physical and mental habits (you'll even see my muscle memory put to task!) 👇The class is only available via my online studio 👇

The weather allowed me to walk in the garden and I suggest you do the same or find a park or field to practice.

Sometimes in life, it feels like everything falls apart. And while it is important not to just brush it off, or to wallow in it, it is important to acknowledge what you're having to deal with. Having friends to talk to, a counsellor or therapist, a contemplative practice, exercise, and resources like books, is incredibly helpful and being able to work through it all. That is why I'm sharing my top 10 'go-to' books with you!
This week's session is a little different. I'll be sharing with you the books I have turned to time and time again when I need to reflect, those I've used to increase my knowledge about myself so that I can help others, and those I've used to help wind down and escape. I'll include a short pranayama practice before and after the session. 🤘

Do you find it feels like more effort to think positively?
You may even feel like negative self-talk is ruling your mind.
Anxiety can certainly bring on negative self-talk. Particularly when you don’t understand why you feel the way you do. You begin to question and blame yourself. Everything in your life is great, what are you complaining about? Why do you feel like you do?
The thing is:
It’s not your fault that you feel this way.
In this week's episode, I look into some of the causes of negative self-talk and provide you with a 3 step process that will help build a healthy habit of overcoming negative self-talk.

It’s kind of hard to break down the differences between fear, anxiety and stress in one sentence. But here is my attempt, to just give you an overview before I go into detail.
Fear is a response to an immediate threat, anxiety is the worrying or apprehension of a future event, and stress is a response to a pressure in a situation (we usually can pinpoint the cause).
We say we have a fear of something (flying, aging) and anxiety about something (flying, aging) or we’re stressed about/ from something.
This episode of Yoga Punx Unite begins with a 20-minute talk on the differences between feeling stressed, anxious, or fearful. Why there is a cross over, and how to overcome them quickly so you can think clearly and take appropriate action.
I share a few short practices within this talk that you can draw on anytime, followed by a more in-depth meditation practice for 11-minutes.

The communication between our organs and brain are via the Central Nervous System. Within this, we have our Autonomic Nervous System.
Our Autonomic Nervous system is part of the nervous system responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, such as breathing, the heartbeat, and digestive processes.
It supplies the internal organs, including the blood vessels, stomach, intestine, liver, kidneys, bladder, genitals, lungs, pupils, heart, and sweat, salivary, and digestive glands.
It has two main divisions. The Sympathetic Nervous System and the Parasympathetic Nervous System. The Vagus Nerve(s) are part of the Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest).
In this episode of Yoga Punx Unite, I cover the role of the Vagus Nerve(s) and why and how we should keep it strong and functioning well to help with overall physical and mental health.

Do you feel trapped in the vicious cycle of thought and behaviour patterns? Are your thoughts controlling your life?
It’s really not uncommon, and very easy to get sucked into.
Experts estimate that the mind thinks between 60,000 – 80,000 thoughts a day. Crazy huh?
And these thoughts pop in and fly by most of the time. Leaving little impression on the conscious mind.
It’s our mind processing information, repeating words, experiences, scenarios⸺we can’t control them. They happen whether we like it or not.
The issue we face is trying to work out which are worth thinking, and which are not.
We’re affected by the outside world. The events and experiences in our lives, shape our beliefs and our values. We make judgements based on those beliefs and values. These shape our thoughts, our emotions and our behaviours.
So the external world, deeply affects our internal world.
When it comes to anxiety and negative self-talk, this cycle can definitely get out of hand. For example, the ‘external event’ in our life could be a personal experience from years past, that leads to a certain belief. That belief triggers a negative emotion (it could also trigger a physical reaction e.g. heart palpitations), this then changes our behaviour which is externalised and affects our external world. And thus the cycle continues.
So how do you break the cycle?
Listen to this 25-minute talk on how to use meditation to master your mind, covering 3 specific meditation techniques and why they work, followed by 11-minute meditation practice.

Now many of us know that the way the anxiety manifests can be different depending on the person and the type of anxiety they are experiencing.
For me, the security of being in my own home and working flexibly, really eases my anxiety. I don’t have the added stress of driving into work anymore, or having to deal with an open office.
But for others, all this isolation is making their anxiety worse.
One thing we have in common though is that anxiety and stress can manifest in a physical sensation. So achy shoulders and neck, or back pain, heart palpitations, headache, tight stomach, or knots in the stomach are just a few examples.
This is where Yoga Asana can be incredibly useful. No matter the pace, yoga can be described as a moving meditation. Whether you are repeating a specific sequence or a specific pose (like in Kundalini Yoga). This can very much help the release tension in the mind and the body.
In this week’s episode, we look at a few Hatha Yoga poses that help with relieving feelings of stress and anxiety. First I’ll share the why and if you’re part of the Yoga Punx Unite - Live community, then you can also join in with the slow Hatha Yoga flow class I do at the end.

In this episode of the Yoga Punx Unite podcast, I chat with guitarist and vocalist of Laughing in the Face Of, Steve Lowry, about their upcoming release ‘Here Lies Ordinary’. We also dive into how the process of writing music can be a cathartic approach to dealing with the stresses of life, what it’s like to take a fully DIY approach to writing an album and how sometimes, time and space can change lyrics. Laughing in the Face Of (more affectionately known as LITFO) excel in tight melodic hardcore, riddled with hooks, riffs, and headbangin’ breaks. On the new record, LITFO delivers a commentary on the labours of adult life, being trodden down in uninspiring jobs, working through broken relationships and dealing with the mental health strain that they create.

For a long time I’d play the victim. When anything went wrong I’d think ’why me’ and in some cases proceed to cry. I felt helpless.
I’ve spent most of my life trying to battle with anxiety and depression, and the negative self-talk and self-doubt that comes with it. I can recall 4 different times in my life where I’ve ”failed” to win against it in a massive way leading to breakdown and burn out.
As a child and teen, these cries of helplessness we’re because I didn’t understand my anxiety and why I had it. I’d tell myself, Everyone else copes and leads normal happy lives, why not me.
As an adult in my mid-20s, these cries of helplessness turned to hopelessness. I was over it all.
I worried most about how my irrational and sometimes unexplainable reactions and outbursts affected others. I not only worried about what I was going through, but how it was affecting those close to me.
I was Looking for someone to save me, to just say “I’m here with you, you are safe.” Instead of feeling the pain of judgment, like people thought I was crazy, and me thinking I was losing my mind.
Waiting to be left on my own, and thinking I deserved the loneliness that would follow.
Something had to change and the only person who could initiate that change, was me. I had to take action.
For a long time I referred to these feelings as ’spoiled child syndrome’ because in my eyes I couldn’t see why I could possibly be allowed to feel the way I did when I’d had such a privileged upbringing. I came from a loving family, I had a good education, I always landed good and well-paid jobs. And other than being bullied at 14, I had a good group of friends.
I was and am aware of the privileges I have in society as a white middle-class woman and I felt guilty that I wasn’t more grateful for it. Even though I was internally suffering from my own existence, I would tell myself I had no right to feel the way I did. I was echoing the words of those who did not understand the complexity of mental health and continued to tell myself “pull yourself together girl”.
It wasn’t until a few years ago that I accepted my mental health disorder as a real thing. I realized it didn’t define me and instead chose to be empowered by it than to play the victim.
I know now I can help others who suffer in silence.
Power is a word we often associated with money-hungry businessmen or politicians. It’s one of many unfortunate results of the patriarchy that the word ’power’ has become an uncomfortable word to use.
But knowing how to tap into your personal power and use that strength to make a positive change in life is paramount if you want to feel comfortable in your own skin.
A definition of power is the ”ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something.”
You honestly have all the resources you need to overcome any of life’s challenges. There are solutions to your problems.
No. You can’t tackle all these problems at once. No you can’t go straight for the biggest problem. No you can’t just jump from A to Z. Taking any of those approaches will make you feel overwhelmed.
It’s about taking small steps, making small changes, and celebrating each accomplishment you make.
