Transcript- NSS2022 With Dr. Naveen Somia
Nic Hello, and welcome to Aesthetics Uncensored with your host Trish Hammond and today, I'm joining her Nicole Montgomery. And we have the Conference Convenor and Past President of ASAPS Dr. Naveen Somia, today joining us which is very exciting to talk to us all about the Non-Surgical Symposium, which is from the 3-5 June this year at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. Naveen, please let us know what we are in store for?
Dr Somia Thanks, Trish and thanks, Nicole for having me on this podcast. Look, I think we are very excited to have everyone back together under one roof. Because I think over the last two years we've not had a live face to face meeting and I think we've missed everyone, and we miss the joy of having people, miss the interactions, the exchange of ideas, information and basically the lack the interruption and the continuity of what we call as care and understanding of knowledge flow. So all those things, hopefully we can rectify this with this meeting. And look, we're all pumped and excited and it's sure going to be a very successful blockbuster meeting, as we call it, we've had a record number of people subscribing to attend the meeting in person, we've had the anatomy for injectors workshop, full, we've had all the exhibitors occupy all these stands so I think there is something in it for everyone. And I think the best way to look at this meeting is it's something that you're going to add to your current body of knowledge by listening from experts around the world, we're going to talk and share stuff with you, you've learned from industry who have been busy in the background, researching and developing products and procedures over the last two years, and then there'll be such a fabulous wealth of information knowledge for you to improve your practice. And ultimately, the entire focus of this meeting is about education, and how education translates to safety so there is plenty, and plenty more for everyone and there's something in it for everybody so we can't wait to host the meeting and personally welcome all of you to the Gold Coast.
Nic It is so exciting. I think for myself, we've had a lot of zooms so there's been a lot of content thrown at us over the last couple of years. But a lot of those zooms have been run by, you know, by distributors or companies who obviously have their own product or device. Whereas having a conference like the Non Surgical Symposium, it is very education boasts a base and there are a lot of sessions that are non bias that are based on you know, a real clinicians, real experiences or case studies or whatnot, which is something that we've really missed in the last couple of years.
Dr Somia Absolutely. Look, I agree with you. In fact, one of the things, plus points of a meeting or conference is to have a chat with the speaker after the session is over. And I think that, to me, is priceless and even if you just look around to your left and to your right in the meeting, both the time we have a coffee break, you'll always come across somebody who either will offer a different perspective on the same treatment, or an advanced version of what you think. So it's, I find it priceless and every time we've been doing this meeting for quite some time, and every time I've either done the anatomy detector tutor job, I've always picked up a few things and I'm always amazed at how much of information is out there that I have missed out over the last few years and you pick up a technical tip or two from other people and one from industry, a better business practice, so on and so forth. So ultimately, you will get kind of what I say is a holistic view of the practice and ultimately little by little, it'll just incrementally increase. And I haven't read a book recently called Atomic Habits by the American gentleman called, James Clear. And if you haven't heard of that book, it is worthwhile looking at this book and reading about it and walking the walk
Another informative and insightful podcast with Dr. Maz as he chats with Trish and Nicole about the secret history of Cosmetic Medicine - from anti-wrinkle treatments to how long does the treatment last for dermal fillers.

Nicole and I were so excited and very privileged to speak with Dr Steven Liew this week, about the A22 conference happening 5-7 August at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney. This is going to be an event like no other!
The theme of this year's event is "Opening Your Eyes". The two-and-a-half-day program aims to challenge the status quo by questioning outdated beliefs and practices. These challenges will be offset by providing new frameworks to embrace bold ideas on how the aesthetics industry can be both better and safer for industry professionals - and of course, patients. Dr Steven Liew shares with that the 2022 event promises to build on its success established at the inaugural 2019 event, by continuing to provide an educational platform that is always, engaging, current, practical and honest. Dr Liew believes that by collectively sharing industry practices, insights, expertise and exciting new ideas can only benefit the entire sector as a whole and that means every practitioner and patient. "We need to build knowledge across our industry regardless of our backgrounds - so that we can continue to grow and advance together."

AMET Founders Bronwyn Granata and Elena Currie are experienced Aesthetic Registered Nurses with extensive local and global commercial sales and training experience. Having each worked in private clinics and also with leading pharmaceutical and device companies, both Bronwyn and Elena knew first-hand the enormous unmet industry need for unbiased and evidenced based aesthetic safety education and adverse event support. With their extensive industry insight and understanding of both practitioner and patient needs, they teamed up to create and launch AMET in early 2021.
Complication prevention and management is by far the greatest unmet need in Global aesthetics. Many treatment complications that arise are avoidable, however even the most experienced of aesthetic health care practitioners will still encounter adverse events. For this reason, AMET has established an unbiased Aesthetic Complication Advisory Panel, to ensure there is a more structured framework for complication management based on current and emerging evidence.
In addition, AMET has also established ANZ's first Ocular Complication Support team as well as an extensive nationwide network of highly experienced industry experts comprising plastic surgeons, dermatologist, ophthalmologists, radiologists, cosmetic physicians and nurse practitioners. AMET's vision is to raise aesthetic medicine safety standards and optimise patient outcomes through providing all aesthetic practitioners with 24/7 access to unbiased, evidenced based aesthetic safety education and complication support. Whilst adverse event management has been the primary focus of many training seminars and conferences, adverse event prevention and knowledge is absolutely paramount to minimising treatment risk and raising industry safety standards.
Becoming an AMET member enables any registered health care practitioner to gain access to an educational platform dedicated to aesthetic safety. Aptly coined "The Safety Portal", the members area includes advisory panel approved AE protocols, detailed anatomical resources, hyaluronidase training, anatomical safety guidelines, off label information and guidelines, unbiased product information, product selection tables, consultation and body dysmorphic disorder support...and so much more! The AMET team are also able to connect members to a nationwide network of industry experts who are willing and able to assist with complication management should a member request additional support. Facilitation for medical intervention is included within the membership, however specialists may charge additional fees for their time and resources which is dependent on the complexity of the case. Despite many successful achievements within the first year, the long-term success and impact of AMET relies entirely on practitioner support. As an industry we need to normalise adverse events and reduce the fear surrounding them through empowering practitioners and sharing regular cases. We need to unite for the greater good and ensure we are all supporting each other in times of need. Statistically, most adverse events have excellent outcomes when managed well. Whilst we can do our utmost to prevent complications, in the end it is a numbers game, and when our time comes, we all need to feel confident and supported to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients.

It's very much an organic cosmetic range of makeup with a high degree of minerals. It's always been mineral based, it's always been anti-talc. The range has beautiful, beautiful products. The key to that, is that each product contains only ingredients that are really good for the skin. So it's makeup but better, because it's got a skincare element as well. It was founded by a beautiful lady called Fiona Neal in 2006, and she has grown it into a great range. Iin June this year, I bought the brand from Fiona, but she still works with the business as the general manager of the make-up company. In November, we're launching a ISSADA Clinical Formula Skincare - and that's actually what you can see the banner behind me, this is what this will look like."
Just like the skin on our face. A vaginal tissue requires collagen for its elasticity and shape. Whether it be from the natural aging processes or physical stress from childbearing, the vaginal tissue can become stretched and weakened. The phenomenon of filling vaginal looseness is called vaginal laxity, which can also lead to other effects such as reduced sexual sensation as well as your during incontinence. Vaginal laxity is very common, but underreported and not well understood. In fact, millions of women experienced vaginal laxity are reported as the most noticeable physical change after vaginal delivery, which no one tells you about. However, 40 to 50% of women globally experienced prolapse and incontinence. Now that I have said the scene for you, the Viveve is a radio frequency device that delivers uniform water metric heating into the deeper layers of the vaginal tissue.
Well, I think you need to understand what type of hair transplants are available. And there's two types: there's FUT, which is follicular unit transplantation. And FUE which is follicular unit extraction, the if you see is one where they took the strip from behind the ear of the ear from one side of the ear to the other. And they take a strip of hair and then divide all the hair follicles so that they can be implanted. The FUE is a specialized technique where you take individual hair follicles so there's no strip, you don't have to make big cuts. And neograft is a specialized machine and technique where it's a much faster, less complicated system to actually take those hair follicles.

I absolutely love Dr Naomi who is considered one of Australia's Injectables Gurus and she was one of my favourite interviews at the recent Non-Surgical Symposium 2018. Dr Naomi chatted to me about all sorts of things relating to injectables including the increasing popularity of the O Shot (improving women's orgasms) and the P Shot (penis enlargement). This is one podcast you have to listen to!

Dr Amira Sanki is passionate about weight loss patients and procedures, and she has so many success stories to share. As well as being a top plastic surgeon, she's also really lovely - this is definitely one for anyone considering any type of weight loss procedure.
The Non-Surgical Symposium was another huge success this year and one of my favourite things about this event are the things I learn. I always come away from the NSS with knowledge I didn't have before and I love that I can pass that on to our readers. Dr Yohei Tanaka, a plastic surgeon from Japan, was one of my highlights and presented some really interesting information on photoageing and how we may not be using the right sunscreens in Australia to stop photoageing.
The Rationale Skin Care range was developed by a cosmetic chemist, Richard Parker, who wanted to create a skin care range that was going to address the specific skin concerns that Australian's face because of our unique sun-drenched lifestyle.
Explants are becoming more popular as women decide they no longer want their breast implants.
In recognition of June being Men's Health Month, I chatted to renowned plastic surgeon Dr Jack Zoumaras from Artiste Plastic Surgery in Sydney about men's facelifts, male procedures and the motivations for men having surgery and how they differ to women. This is a really insightful podcast.
We've all heard of prebiotics for our guts to keep us balanced and healthy but what about prebiotics for the skin?! One of my favourite things about the Non-Surgical Symposium 2018 was that I heard some of the latest innovations in skin care and Synergie Skin was one of the most interesting. Everything they said about feeding the skin what it needs to keep it beautiful makes sense - you've got to have a listen to this one...
Dr Jayson Oates from Academy Face and Body is in the know on most male health issues and to highlight Men's Health Month I had a chat to him about the most current and relevant issues facing men today.
I love catching up with Dr Steven Weiner at the Non-Surgical Symposium every year. Dr Weiner has performed more Infini treatments than any other practitioner in the world - he and his patients absolutely love this treatment, but I wanted to talk to Dr Weiner about the results he's been getting using both the Infini and the LaseMD combined, and the fact that he has patients from all over the world travelling to see him for him to treat their acne scarring.
Great injectors are always busy, and they also treat things that you might not imagine! Ella Price from Jade Cosmetic Clinic won our Queensland's Favourite Injector Award 2018, so we had a chat with Ella to find out what wonderful things she does with her day, and how she helps patients with a range of things - it's not all cosmetic!
We're loving how some beauty clinics are now offering such a diverse range of beauty treatments alongside our everyday needs such as waxing and nails! You can now head into a good clinic and also have regular laser resurfacing or fat freezing treatments. Ocean Cosmetics in WA are getting a rep as one of the best and they offer an extremely comprehensive non-surgical treatment menu to cover all your bases. I wanted to chat to Dr Gina Messiha, founder of Ocean Cosmetics, about what they offer including their skin "gyms" which is one of the best ideas I've heard of in a long time!
Threads are a great option for those not ready for a full facelift but want or need more than just a good facial. There is a real buzz around APTOS Threads at the moment so I chatted to Mara from Mara Aesthetics who distribute APTOS Threads to find out more about them and why patients are loving this procedure.

This is one for any woman looking to have a breast augmentation or breast implants.
I'm continuously being blown away by the journeys that some people go through when having their plastic surgery. It's not always fun and games, and there's so many situations where things get worse before they seem to get better. Today I had the pleasure of chatting to Steph who has lupus (an autoimmune disease) and the incredible journey she has been through. It makes us very aware of choosing our surgeons wisely. Steph's surgeon Dr Marcus Pyragius went above and beyond through the whole experience - you'll love this real story.
Many of us have fat bags under our eyes and don't realise there's actually a treatment that can help get rid of it. I was excited to have a chat with Dr Ronald Feiner who is able to get rid of fat bags without any surgery whatsoever!
