On a February day in 1969, off the shore of northern California, a US Navy crane carefully lowered 300 tons of metal into the Pacific Ocean. The massive tubular structure was an audacious feat of engineering — a pressurized underwater habitat, complete with science labs and living quarters for an elite group of divers who hoped to spend days or even months at a stretch living and working on the ocean floor. The Sealab project, as it was known, was the brainchild of a country doctor turned naval pioneer who dreamed of pushing the limits of ocean exploration the same way NASA was pushing the limits of space exploration. As Americans were becoming entranced with the effort to land a man on the moon, these divers, including one of NASA’s most famous astronauts, were breaking depth barrier records underwater. Sealab tells the little-known story of the daring program that tested the limits of human endurance and revolutionized the way humans explore the ocean. He saw the towers being hit from an airplane taking off from the same terminal the hijackers were in. He recounts his day and the roles his team played in the following investigation. We speak with diver and author Dave Adamson as he talks about diving in the UK. We had a great time talking with him in another international episode. Dave talks about his book, Taking the Tide Where it Serves. About the author, from his bio, “ I was born and brought up in villages near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, an area he still calls home. I was educated in a village primary school where I failed the 11+ examination and moved to a secondary school, where he gained just enough qualifications to enter an apprenticeship in Engineering, before quitting that secure world to follow my love of the underwater environment into a lifetime at sea. I worked my way from diver’s helper to eventually offshore manager of large oilfield construction projects worldwide.
I married my first, and only love, Marion and we remain happily together until this day, in the home we built ourselves in rural North Yorkshire.
My first and probably only book is my autobiography which tells the story of a life which I feel is sufficiently different to warrant a book. and It hopefully also gives hope to anyone who thinks the lack of a university degree somehow condemns them to a humdrum life.
Apart from an interesting and exciting carreer in the offshore oilfields we have travelled extensivly and exsperienced many adventures.
My hobbies include sea kayaking, which I am an advanced Sea kayak leader in and a Level 3 coach, angling, skiing and walking. I still uses some of the skills learned in apprenticeship to turn out all kinds of projects from my home workshop.
The idea to write about my experience was simply for personal gratification and fill some time during the Coronavirus lockdown. But as it evolved so did the idea to publish the book. As it turns out it one of my proudest achievements.”

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we are reporting on the recent diver deaths at CDA, a commercial diving school. While death and injury is part of any trade, whether it be on the job or in training exercises, it is never easy to bear. The loved ones left behind, the unanswered questions, the shock and pain is felt by all in our small community of divers. This report comes from sources at the school and police reports from the Jacksonville sheriffs office. This coupled by our knowledge of the trade and dive operations help us piece together the events that may have occurred. This is an ongoing investigation and are limited to what we can report on. Our condolences and hearts go out to all parties involved. That includes the victims, their loved ones, the students that witnessed these tragedies, and entire staff at CDA. Please seek help and talk to a professional therapist if you are finding it difficult to deal with the recent events.

On September 18, 2012, while doing routine maintenance work on an underwater structure at the Huntington oilfield in the North Sea, Chris Lemons' dive umbilical was severed almost 100 meters down. With his main breathing gas cut off and only about 6 minutes of gas left in his bailout, Lemons soon fell unconscious. Freezing and alone in the dark, things definitely looked grim for Chris. Despite being in the frigid water without air for around 30 minutes, and for reasons that no one has been able to explain, Chris survived after being rescued by divers Dave Yuasa and Duncan Allcock. This has been documented in a feature film entitled "Last Breath" and can be found on Netflix. Chris comes on the podcast to talk about his amazing ordeal and life after the incident. We cover a variety of topics from diving safety, misconceptions about commercial diving, how he dealt with his return to diving, and have a few beers in typical Bottom Dwellers fashion. An episode that you do not want to miss! We had a blast talking with Chris lemons and had an amazing chat with him. I am sure you will hear more from him on future episodes as well!
