Episode 87 Our Guest: Stran Smith 2025 'Draft Pick' for Abbott HeartMates ProgramStran is a legendary tie-down roping cowboy from Childress, Texas. He competed professionally for over 20 years, appearing 11 times at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR), and won the PRCA World Championship in 2008. In 2025 he was inducted into the rodeo Hall of Fame.

In this episode, Stran shares his incredible journey from being a professional cowboy to overcoming a life-altering stroke. He discusses the challenges of co-authoring a book, his involvement with the Abbott HeartMates Program and the importance of community support during any type of heart or health related recovery. Stran emphasizes the significance of connection and encouragement for stroke survivors and highlights the HeartMates program as a vital resource for those facing similar challenges. His story is one of resilience, purpose, and the unwavering belief that there is hope and light ahead if you don’t give up.

More on his stroke: At age 32 he suffered a stroke caused by a previously undetected patent foramen ovale (PFO)—a small opening between the upper chambers of the heart. Doctors initially told him he’d likely never ride again. He underwent PFO closure using the Abbott Amplatzer Occluder, which enabled his remarkable return to competition and eventual world championship.

We met Jenna Muri-Rosenthal through an introduction by our previous episode guest Rory Polera (Ep69). Jenna has her clinical roots at Spaulding Rehab and is an experienced speech and language pathologist (SLP) who uses her passion for Crossfit and advanced training in brain injury and rehabilitation to offer a neuro adaptive fitness and cognitive communication rehabilitation model. Episode 67 - Innovating Community Fitness: Building Bridges from Research to Post-Stroke Rehab.

New National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines in the UK recommend stroke patients receive at least three hours of rehabilitation a day, five days a week. This is a dramatic increase from previous guidance of 45 minutes a day. Currently there are big gaps in service when it comes to supporting people with stroke after they’re discharged from care not only in the UK but worldwide. Often, survivors have nowhere to go to exercise and accessing a conventional gym for most is challenging and for some it’s impossible.

With our continued theme of exercise as the best medicine for stroke recovery, in this episode we are diving deeper into this topic to find solutions for expanding the reach of rehab into the community and highlighting champions innovating for more solutions to make these new rehab guidelines a reality.

Meet Our Guest: Dr Rachel Young PhD MSc, BSc

Rachel is a senior research fellow at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre in Sheffield Hallam University. She is a chartered physiotherapist with expertise in neurological rehabilitation and exercise prescription. Rachel's research interests include the development and evaluation of rehabilitation technologies and accessible exercise solutions.

In our discussion Dr. Young reminded us that the NICE guidelines of three hours are not the first to recommend extensive rehabilitation. The National Clinical Guidance for Stroke launched in March 2023 actually advised six hours of activity a day, which may include activities of daily living, communication and exercise.

We dove into why these guidelines sent a ripple through the stroke community, including how providers don’t have the workforce to meet these new recommendations. We also discussed her research and how she believes technology, in the form of accessible exercise equipment, apps and wearables has to be part of the solution if we’re to have any hope of meeting the guidelines.

Episode 64 - Achieving Balance (Part 1): Food as Medicine to Fuel Stroke Recovery

A comprehensive stroke recovery plan of care often includes a combination of physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with other medical interventions. These therapies are vital for regaining physical and cognitive abilities. Often overlooked, however, in the stroke recovery pathway is the quality of a stroke survivor’s diet. Quality nutrition offers the potential to improve stroke outcomes by promoting healing, providing high performance fuels to support the physical demands of rehabilitation as well as offering key nutrients for boosting brain resilience to reduce the risk of future strokes.

We needed to look no further for an expert than our show co-host David Dansereau for today’s episode on using food as medicine in stroke prevention and recovery. When David had a stroke at 39 from a congenital heart defect, he realized the challenges a stroke presented and took action by setting smart goals to optimize his diet in support of his long term rehabilitation plans. He ultimately achieved his goal of returning to running and completed the Boston Marathon.In this episode

David shares his nutrition playbook and breaks down 3 key nutrition principles (his 3F’s) that can provide a solid foundation for improving your nutrition IQ and complimenting your healing journey along with the help of your own health care team. Episode 36 Interview with Kyle Zebley, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the American Telemedicine Association and Executive Director, ATA Action

In this episode you’ll be hearing from the first policy expert we’ve had on our show and we don’t think we could have brought you a better one!

It is important for us to emphasize this interview would not have been possible without the great coordinated cooperation from Gina Cella Senior VP of Strategic Connections and Ann Mond Johnson CEO of the ATA, so we want to thank them both here as well along with all the great work their team does every day to support this common mission of advancing telehealth.

In Episode 60 of the Know Stroke Podcast we sat down with the esteemed Dr. Joseph Broderick.Guest Bio:Joseph Broderick, MD, a distinguished stroke expert and neurologist, has been a crucial part of UC Physicians since 1987. In 1996, he became a professor of Neurology at the University of Cincinnati, and from 2000-2014, held the Albert Barnes Voorheis Chair for the Department of Neurology at the UC College of Medicine. From 2014 through the present, he has served as the Director of the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute. Contributing to medical care within the broader community as a founding member of the UC Stroke team, he has served as a courtesy staff member at 20 regional hospitals during the past 30 years and as a full staff member at all UC Health hospitals.Currently, he is the principal investigator for the National Coordinating Center for StrokeNET, an NIH-funded network of 25 regional stroke centers and 500 hospitals nationwide focusing on clinical trials and stroke care as well the principal investigator of two sizeable global stroke trials. In Episode 59 of the show we sat down with stroke survivor Sean Entin aka the Stroke Hacker. Despite being paralyzed on his left side, Sean learned to walk, talk, drive, and speak in front of audiences, inspiring people to free their minds and bodies after a traumatic event. His mission is to help stroke survivors, caregivers, and families reduce anxiety, regain independence, and discover hope for a better future. Sean graduated from the University of Southern California with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. He went on to co-found two startups that went public; he even worked out with Navy SEALS to improve his fitness for fun. And with all this happening, he remained a dedicated husband and father of two young daughters. Then in 2011, on Thanksgiving weekend, it happened. Sean suffered a massive stroke at age 39. While induced into a 10-day coma, the neurosurgeon performed a craniectomy. That left Sean with a long road to recovery, but he never gave up. Despite Sean’s grim prognosis, he defied the odds and birthed his mantra, “I can, I shall, I will.” Sean's journey has inspired him to launch Stroke Hacker, a program and community aimed at helping stroke survivors, individuals with traumatic brain injuries, and caregivers. Sean provides one-on-one coaching, encouraging survivors to face new challenges and helping them plan a recovery road map. In Episode 56, we sat down with the United Stroke Alliance (USA) Co-Founder and Executive Director Marylee Nunley and CEO Larry Schaer to discuss how this dynamic duo has grown the alliance from a single person in a single community, to its expansion and now having offered 300 Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camps throughout the country. The Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp program (now a division of the USA) was first developed in 2004 by Marylee & John Nunley (Founders) following John’s stroke in 2001. We discuss the USA team’s stroke support outreach efforts and how they have extended into communities throughout the country with their stroke awareness and prevention programs. The team estimates they have now educated millions of people on the signs of stroke as well as have supported thousands of stroke survivors, caregivers and their family members in their stroke recovery journeys.  About the United Stroke Alliance The United Stroke Alliance (USA) team is made up of passionate individuals who tirelessly strive to make a difference in not only stroke survivors and caregivers lives, but also for the members of every community through their stroke awareness and prevention programs. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the USA, which was founded in 2004 when one stroke caregiver, (Co-Founder Marylee Nunley) wanted to improve the quality of life for local stroke survivors and caregivers through a weekend retreat. In addition to taking a deep dive into the stroke camp experience for caregivers and stroke survivors on this episode, we also highlighted their Stroke Out Stroke Program at ballparks country wide to raise awareness for their BE-FASTER! campaign to know stroke warning signs and take action through emergency response and 911. In Episode 55 we're joined by Michelle Ballasiotes, a pediatric stroke survivor and occupational therapist. Michelle suffered what is called a perinatal stroke which usually occurs between the middle of pregnancy and delivery. Her childhood consisted of weekly physical and occupational therapy for more than 10 years in order to gain mobility due to right hemiplegia, or paralysis on the right side of the body. She also has hydrocephalus, or an excess of cerebral spinal fluid, in her brain, resulting in having a shunt placed in her head at three days old. Some of the topics from our conversation:

Dr. Jayaraman’s work has been published in more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, and has been funded by myriad leading organizations, including the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation. He also holds various external leadership positions, serving as Director of Global Outreach for the Wearable Robotics Association and editorial Board Member for the International Journal of Stroke. Dr. Jayaraman also is involved with the American Orthotic Prosthetic Association, the Society for Neuroscience and the American Physical Therapy Association.

Dr. Jayaraman holds a BS in Physical Therapy from SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre in Chennai, India; an MS in Physical Therapy from Georgia State University; and a PhD in Rehabilitation Medicine from the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Our Guest:  Dr. Siddiqui is a serial entrepreneur, a radiologist and currently the Chief Medical and Chief Strategy Officer of Hyperfine, Inc. that has created the world’s first FDA 510(k) cleared, portable MRI scanner. Prior to Hyperfine, Dr. Siddiqui founded higi, Inc. – a consumer health technology company – that was acquired by Babylon Health. Higi stations are deployed in over 12,000 locations globally with over 60 million patients on the platform and has virtual clinical care network in 50 states.  Prior to founding higi, Dr. Siddiqui was a Physician Executive at Microsoft where he was responsible for platform engineering and AI for the health solutions group.

Dr. Siddiqui holds dozens of patents for technology in areas of deep learning, AI, image processing, data visualization, MR imaging as well as secure patient information handling and health records. His focus has been to use the advances in technology – namely computing power, microelectronics, connectivity, big data, and AI to democratize technologies in healthcare to make solutions better, smaller, cheaper, and more accessible to clinicians and patients globally. 

He is a graduate of the Aga Khan University Medical College in Pakistan, completed his training in Medicine at New York University, Radiology training at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, along with his fellowship in the Imaging Informatics at University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD.

In Episode 33 of the Know Stroke Podcast, we were joined by Orlena Skek. Orlena Shek is a former in-house software technology licensing attorney. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two young children. After experiencing major hemorrhagic stroke in late 2011 due to a rare congenital condition called Moyamoya Disease, she put her law career on hold to focus on her rehab and her family. The numbers that she shares speak for themselves to the long and turbulent journey she went on.

14 ambulance rides within 5 months

6 week hospitalization at Stanford. 

3.5 weeks in a medically induced coma

3 different acute rehab hospital stays ranging from Marin to Santa Clara County.

Two 10 hour plus brain surgeries, a week apart.

One thousand eight hundred paper origami cranes folded by countless co-workers, neighbors, and friends. Some of whom are on the call here tonight. 

More than a 100 nights spent hospitalized, away from home.  

2 children:1st born pre-Stroke, 2nd born post-Stroke.

1 trip to Las Vegas by myself for a Bachelorette party.

Know Stroke Podcast Episode 31 Interview with Ralph Preston Founder of Stroke Buddies After a stroke, Ralph Preston leveraged over 40 years of professional video experience to continue to do good with his camera. He “turned the lens on himself “ and is developing high-quality videos for stroke survivors and for local non-profits.  About our Guest: Preston is the founder of Stroke Buddies: By and For Stroke Survivors, a Facebook group for stroke survivors that currently has 8,000 members and is growing every day. Ralph built this community from the ground up so survivors can seek answers, learn with educational resources, and receive support. Last year, he launched a weekly virtual stroke survivor support group meeting in association with MedRhythms and is assembling a team of medical professionals, PTs, OTs, physicians, neurologists, and neuroscientists who have suffered stroke themselves and are interested in sharing their stories and knowledge at these support group meetings.  Ralph also started a discussion show that is shared with the Stroke Buddies community and is called Stroke Roadmap. The purpose is to help those who are transitioning their recovery from PT to home therapy. Additionally, Ralph develops and shares dozens of home therapy exercise videos from his YouTube channel to improve at-home recovery.   This year Stroke Buddies was granted non-profit status, so now he is off to raise money and see if he can fundamentally change stroke recovery. Know Stroke Podcast Episode 30 Stroke commonly damages motor function in the upper extremity (UE), leading to long-term disability and loss of independence in a majority of individuals. Rehabilitation seeks to restore function by training daily activities, which deliver repeated UE functional motions. The optimal number of functional motions necessary to boost recovery is unknown. This gap stems from the lack of measurement tools to feasibly count functional motions.  Today's guest is Dr. Heidi Schambra from NYU Langone. She and her team at the Mobilis Lab, out of NYU Langone developed the PrimSeq pipeline to enable the accurate and rapid counting of building-block functional motions, called primitives. PrimSeq uses wearable sensors to capture rich motion information from the upper body, and custom-built algorithms to detect and count functional primitives in this motion data. They showed that their deep learning algorithm precisely counts functional primitives performed by stroke patients and outperformed other benchmark algorithms. The study also showed patients tolerated the wearable sensors and that the approach is 366 times faster at counting primitives than humans. PrimSeq provides a precise and practical means of quantifying functional primitives, which promises to advance stroke research and clinical care and to improve the outcomes of individuals with stroke. In our discussion we covered how this tool can translate into rehab happening in the clinical setting, a patient's home, and how insurers think about reimbursing stroke rehab.  About our guest: Dr. Heidi Schambra is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine, Director of the Division of Neuro-Epidemiology, Director of Research Strategy in Neurology, and Director of the Mobilis Lab. Dr. Schambra received her BS in neuroscience from Brown University and MD from Emory University. She completed her training in neurology at Harvard-Partners and in neurorehabilitation at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in motor learning and noninvasive brain stimulation with Dr. Leonardo Cohen at NINDS/NIH. Dr. Schambra was on faculty at Columbia University until 2016, when she joined NYU Langone. When not in the lab, she can be found taxonomizing clouds, cute-aggressing her pets and husband, and menacing New York on a Citibike.

Season 3 Episode 6 -On The Road!

Before we get to our "Stroke in the News" this week we would be remiss not to pause and reflect that this episode is being recorded asynchronously amidst the backdrop of war in Ukraine. As we all finally sense an end to the COVID-19 crisis, we find ourselves in the midst of another one, and the extent of which is still unclear. It is hard to put into words what it means to watch the invasion of a sovereign nation, and honestly we’ve all struggled with the immediate human costs and certainly more lives will be senselessly lost. Also realizing the potential implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we have found hope in the strength of the Ukrainian people and we stand with them in support of democracy.

Lauren Sheehan S3E5 : OT in Tech, Co-Founder Rehab Tech Summit

As you’ll learn on this episode, my co-host first met Lauren while doing stroke research as part of his Masters degree in Dublin. Lauren is a Product Manager with Neurolutions, Inc. and has been in the medical device industry for the last five plus years. Her clinical background is primarily in outpatient neurorehabilitation. She has held administrative roles in clinic management and as a department director.

Lauren is a founding member of the American Congress of Rehab Medicine's Clinical Managers Task Force, serves as the Productive Aging Special Interest Section Technology Coordinator for the American Occupational Therapy Association and has served as an Adjunct Faculty Member at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. In addition, she serves on the Advisory Board for a developing Occupational Therapy Doctoral program at Keck Graduate Institute.

In addition to adopting a new cat who you’ll meet briefly in this episode, Lauren is also a new mom and home owner. In her spare time (LOL!), Lauren co-founded the Rehab Tech Summit, an online conference and community that aims to bring together industry professionals and rehabilitation clinicians, researchers and entrepreneurs to share information and ideas in the rehabilitation technology space. Mike and I are delighted that we’ll be joining Lauren this year at the event to hold a roundtable discussion on the adoption of digital health and coaching to improve quality of life for those living with neurological disorders.

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 3 of the Know Stroke Podcast!

We were delighted to bring back an old friend, intro voice of the podcast, and stroke thriver, Caroline Goggin. Caroline shared her story with us as our inaugural guest on Season 1 Episode 2, if you haven't listened to that interview you can go back and listen here. In that episode Caroline gave credit to her husband, Travis, for saving her life. He recognized the symptoms and acted FAST! It has been a long road ever since, and we’re humbled that after hearing Caroline's side of the story in season 1, we now got to hear from Travis what those early days were like as a caregiver.

One adjective we heard a lot from Travis during this conversation was 'hopeless'. Hopelessness is a feeling many caregivers often go through when they have a loved one who suffered a stroke. Travis does an exceptional job of walking us through his thoughts, and what has changed from the day he was in the hospital at Carolines bedside to today - preparing for the Boston Marathon.

Returning to running is something near and dear to our co-host David's road to recovery who has now completed two Boston Marathons since his stroke. David and Caroline now have connected as part of their stroke recovery journey a common link with Tedy's Team, the non-profit launched by New England's own Tedy Bruschi. Since his stroke Tedy and his wife Heidi been on a mission to advance awareness and research for stroke. Caroline and Travis will be running as part of Tedy's Team, and along with training over 500 miles for the 26.2 mile run they aim to raise $18,000 to advance stroke research.

This conversation was a lot of fun, and as expected Caroline and Travis shared many gems. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.

Welcome to Season 3 episode 2 of the KnowStroke Podcast.

In this episode we sat down for a stimulating conversation with Sandra Saldana, CEO and co-founder at Alva Health. Sandra launched Alva Health as a spin out from Yale University entrepreneur fellowship program in 2017. Alva Health's mission is to develop, commercialize, and make accessible a first-in-class medical device that accurately detects strokes using patient-worn wearables. 2021 was a milestone year for Alva Health as they were selected as the winners of the Medtech Innovator accelerator program - the industry's global competition and accelerator for early and mid-stage medical device, diagnostic, and digital health companies. The device is shown below and looks like a livestrong band which is meant to be worn 24/7 - currently it detects hemiparesis which is a common biomarker of stroke. The more a user wears the device, the more it learns about the movement of that specific user. For any irregularities the device will alert the patient and notify 911. In the future they will be iterating on the product to incorporate speech and facial recognition technology.

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, she moved to the US at 12 years old and grew up in Houston, Texas. Sandra's father ran a successful business so from a young age she remembers having the itch to start her own company one day. She began her studies at Cornell University in upstate New York and then moved back to Houston to study a PhD in Cancer Biology. After a few years in academia Sandra made the move into industry and had her first taste of the med-device / pharma industry while running sales for a start-up in Boston.

After a few years of the C-Suite she was eager to start her own company. Not long after being accepted to Yale's MBA in healthcare program she met her co-founders and being validating a concept for a wearable to detect stroke. It was a long journey, one that she explains in detail in this episode and speaks to the hurdles along the way.
Sandra has a true understand of what is wrong with the current stroke care pathway, this will become evident when you hear her answer to our Magic Wand question. In our last episode of Season 2 we welcome Kate Skeels, Stroke Advance Practice Nurse at Tufts Medical Center to the show. We picked the great discussion right up where we left off with her Tufts colleague Dr. Lester Leung from our previous episode. We learned what brought Kate from her western New York roots with her family to Boston and where she fell in love with the stroke patient population, met “baby” Lester and began growing the program at Tufts together “like 2 peas in a pod”. Curious? Listen to Kate tell the whole story in her interview!
Including- How the addition of Kate to the Tuft’s Team provides dual leadership and drives better outcomes for patients while allowing for the shared perspectives of Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Physician (MD) team model. This discussion through Kate’s NP lens was fascinating. You’ll learn about different advanced level NP providers and how Kate’e training opens her role up as an advanced practitioner, and how NPs deliver care similar to how quarterbacks plan, prepare and execute plays in the NFL! Well, this was Mike and I offering analysis of Kate’s role in our show intro after learning all she does every day! In fact, we decided to give her the title of the Tom Brady of the Tufts Comprehensive Stroke Center (even though she still is a Buffalo Bills fan, sorry Patriots Nation!)

Carrying the team discussion into a deeper dive of the SAYA Program and Stroke Clinic with Kate we learned how they manage patients at their high risk stroke clinic, offer telehealth, group and in person visits to provide longitudinal stroke care support as “care is needed at different points in a season of stroke”. Love this! Also we learn how they go the extra mile at Tufts to manage and personalize care including how the team often has a “discharge time out” (yes, another football reference, how fitting!) to stop, regroup and build a plan for the patient that offers help around the focus of attention needed when discharge weaknesses are discovered. You’ll also learn about the great educational efforts Kate and her team are involved with through their Annual Tufts Stroke Symposium to share stroke education with other providers. Finally, Kate’s magic wand answer, well let’s just say she scored a touchdown on this one with Mike and I ! Give it a listen as part of your own stroke game plan!

Season 2 Episode 7 -Lester Y. Leung, MD, MSc Tufts MC

This was a real impactful episode for my co-host Mike and I as we convened late this past Sunday evening to interview board certified vascular and general neurologist, Lester Leung, MD, MSc of Tufts MC. For myself (co-host David Dansereau), this episode was also very personal as I was able to thank Lester for the critical role he played in my own stroke recovery both as my neurologist and as a friend and coach.

Lester grew up in New Orleans, LA and after coming to Boston to attend college he returned home to New Orleans for medical school and found himself on a mission to help rebuild New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina. From this early advocacy, rebuilding homes and riding with EMS to help Katrina victims “where they were” he was moved and impacted by the fractured healthcare system and all the challenges it presented for victims during an emergency like Katrina. Lester credits these early lessons learned as well as having really dynamic mentors along the way, in particular New Orleans based stroke neurologist Sheryl Martin-Schild, MD,PhD for enlightening him on how people with stroke are suffering and have multifaceted unmet needs. This early career experience solidified Dr. Leung’s dedication to neurology and when he later moved back to Boston to begin his career you’ll learn how these early lessons sparked his passion to do more for the stroke community, with a special interest in the needs of young stroke. This was a moving and enlightening discussion and together, Lester, Mike and I unpacked many stroke topics including:

• Exploring and studying screening of late complications after stroke among stroke survivors, esp. young stroke survivors
• Dr Leung’s advocacy to spearhead a statewide/regional/(global)* PSA on the need to seek emergency care for stroke despite the pandemic surge. * Mike revealed he even viewed and heard Lester’s PSA used across the Atlantic as a model to use as a stroke awareness call to action while in Dublin!
• Treating patients at Tufts in later time windows after stroke (late presenter thrombolysis)
• Understanding disparities and stroke recovery outcome, including novel factors like neighborhood income inequality, and community investment in stroke rehab resources.
• Use of high technology and investment in stroke recovery vs high touch longitudinal coaching and education models and how both involve following the reimbursement dollars for care delivery and addressing recovery plateaus
• The Comprehensive Stroke Center at Tufts, including its first in the nation SAYA Program (Stroke And Young Adult) an outpatient longitudinal care model founded by Dr. Leung.

Welcome back to the Know Stroke Podcast! Our guest today is Kaitlyn Jones. Kaitlyn is an occupational therapist and currently a Program Manager working with the XBOX Gaming Accessibility Team where she is able to use her clinical background and perspectives to help guide inclusive product design. She is very passionate about the ways in which technology that is accessible can enhance the quality of life of all people. She has done extensive research exploring the benefits of video game play that extend beyond fun and leisure to functional performance, mental health and social participation. She was the 2018 recipient of the Edward Leahy Jr Award for Innovation in Technology and the 2017 recipient of the Maria Gervasio Award for Outstanding Commitment to Professional Development in Occupational Therapy.

Kaitlyn was inspired by her father who founded Warfighter Engaged in 2012. Warfighter Engaged is a on-profit with a mission to improve the lives of severely wounded and disabled warfighters through custom adapted devices. Serving as the Director of Clinical Outreach, Kaitlyn interfaces with clinicians, private practices, hospitals and other clinical organizations regarding the importance of inclusive design, adapted technology, and the benefits of video game integration into therapeutic settings.

She is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy degree with a thesis focused on promoting the use of commercial video game-based interventions for improved patient outcomes.

In this conversation we dive into:

Navigator: one that navigates or is qualified to navigate.

Who are some people that come to mind when you think of navigators? Most navigators have personality traits of wanting to help others achieve their goals. Brooke Medel is a Stroke Nurse Navigator at UConn Health in Farmington, Connecticut. Joining the team at UConn in June Brooke has come into a crucial role supporting stroke survivors in the transition of care from the hospital back home and in adapting to life after stroke. Sounds like an important job, right? Brooke was born for this job. Once you listen to her story you'll understand the passion she brings into the role and why her patients are so lucky to have her.

In this episode Brooke brings us through her day to day as a stroke nurse navigator. We explore the many challenges faced by stroke survivors and their loved ones at the point of discharge and her approach to supporting these challenges. You'll also hear about the Stroke Clinic at UConn Health and the amazing support they provide to the stroke thriver community. Brooke gives us a recap of the 3rd Annual Stroke Symposium which was held last month as part of World Stroke Day, October 29th. Know Stroke Podcast S2E4
Our brains are incredible organs that center our thoughts, record our experiences and emotions, control our behaviors and provide the processing power that enable us to move our bodies. With the upcoming #WorldStrokeDay (October 29th) this brief episode focused on patient focused events and resources that help our incredible brains stay healthy and repair by sharing lived experiences and knowledge to empower our brains and our souls to heal and recover after stroke.

On Episode 4 of season 2 of the Know Stroke Podcast we started the conversation with a little trust exercise where David asked Mike to open up the show “live and unscripted” before he revealed a special guest. On Episode 3 of Season 2 of the Know Stroke Podcast we were joined by an old friend, Dr. Carolyn Brown. Before Dr Brown joined, per usual, David and Mike covered this past weeks "In The News" section. The headline that popped for us this week was

Mindmaze scores big with $125M for gamified neurotherapeutics platform

This is a company Mike has had his eye on since researching the use of Virtual Reality for stroke rehabilitation as part of his Masters Thesis. MindMaze is making a push to repairing neurological damage caused by stroke. MindMaze’s platform comprises a series of video games that, when combined with a motion-tracking camera and customized to a patient’s individual condition and needs, can support both rehabilitation and restoration of brain function. Several of the programs have already been cleared for use in the U.S. and Europe, and a new line of funding will now help make them even more widely available. Watch this space, we think it's going to have some massive potential. Oh, and so does Leonardo DiCaprio, he added MindMaze to his list of investments back in 2017.

Dr Brown first assisted us with the Next Step Forward Program back in May 2020. Dr Brown is a clinically certified occupational therapist with over 25 years experience in neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation.

Prior to the pandemic Carolyn ran a series of exercise classes for stroke survivors in a clinic setting. In March of 2020 she quickly brought these classes online, delivered through Zoom. To her delight survivors loved the online classes. She continues to deliver weekly Telehealth classes, and is so bought into the potential of digital for occupational therapy that she launched her own non-for-profit, StrokeOT. https://www.strokeot.org

In this discussion we explored what is making telehealth stick from a patient/survivor perspective, what things need to be happen from a regulatory view for the commercial model to make sense, and what Carolyn has in her crystal ball for the future of stroke care.

QTUG, is their proprietary technology for clinicians and researchers which uses body worn sensors combined with a standard clinical test (the Timed Up and Go - TUG) to better assess risk of falls, gait and mobility.

In this episode Seamus discussed their latest product, Kinesis Balance, a consumer friendly smartphone application for remote monitoring and self-assessment of balance and falls risk. This new tech uses machine learning algorithms combined with questionnaires and wearable or smartphone sensors to provide reliable assessment of balance and falls risk in the home and give users more control and insight into their daily mobility and safety. It is currently available for free in the Google Play store.

In this episode David and Mike discuss recent real life experiences of one of the many friction points stroke survivors and caregivers experience - getting access to a reliable marketplace to purchase equipment for adaptive home management. After all, feeling safe in your own home is an important goal in your daily life, especially after surviving a stroke. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, paying your bills, and yard work are some occupations that can become challenging after a stroke yet important milestones and goals to achieve for returning to independence. Oftentimes, mobility aids and adaptive tools or remote monitoring equipment are needed to ensure safety and help optimize rehab outcomes. It starts with maybe a Google search, then if you're lucky you might ask your occupational or physical therapist, but either way you're left with a maze of choices and reviews from people in different situations than yours.

Now what if you had a marketplace that brought all of these items together for you into one place, with reviews from folks just like you!?

Dave and Mike dive into why this concept of a comprehensive stroke marketplace and community support was and remains one of their top "magic wand" answers they want to achieve for better support for life after stroke. In this episode, they discuss what this might look like and why simple is the best strategy when looking at improving access to stroke rehab.

Episode 3: In this episode we interview Lauren Souders, the current Clinical Manager for Neurolutions, Inc. Lauren has been working with Neurolutions since 2012 assisting in the development and clinical evolution applying brain-computer interface in the stroke rehabilitation space. Lauren was an integral clinical lead at the infancy of Neurolutions first product, the IpsiHand. Lauren is also one of the first pioneering occupational therapists to assist in using brain-computer interface technology with stroke patients.

Lauren has held other clinical roles as an occupational therapist with advanced certifications as a certified brain injury specialist (CBIS) and a certified stroke rehabilitation specialist (CSRS). Lauren also served as an adjunct faculty member at Saint Louis University and a clinical specialist for Washington University’s School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology. Lauren has presented at a number of conferences for the American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Lauren continues to serve as a guest lecturer at a number of universities including Saint Louis University and Maryville University. Lauren is a founding member of two other start-up companies. Overall, Lauren aspires to innovate creative medical technologies to provide solutions to improve the lives of those who need it the most.

In Episode 2 David and Mike were joined by their first guest, stroke survivor Caroline Goggin.

Caroline grew up outside Philadelphia and is a proud graduate of Penn State University.

Caroline is familiar with New England, having lived and worked in Providence as a weekday anchor and reporter for four years. David and Caroline first crossed paths when she shared a post on social media explaining a terrifying experience of surviving a stroke.

The opening line of her post read, Less than a month into our marriage, we really tested out the “in sickness and in health” part of our vows this week.⁣

Caroline gives credit to her husband, Travis, for saving her life. He recognized the symptoms and acted FAST!

**It has been a long road ever since, and we’re humbled that Caroline brought us through what those early days were like for her and Travis.
