It’s Bubble time again on Shoulder of Giants, as we discuss in spoilery detail the finale of TV phenomenon Better Call Saul, as well as some deep delves into the show as a whole, not to mention the Mother Ship, Breaking Bad.
These are shows which personify the concept of compulsive (or, if you like, addictive) viewing.
Both are arguably flawless in concept, construction and realisation, with ingenious direction and spellbinding storytelling.
Add to this some performances and characters that are at once iconic, lovable, hateable, frustrating, self-destructive and painful to watch, and you’re left with an experience all too human, making viewing in complete comfort an impossibility.
The shows basically boil down to stories about deeply flawed people; the two leads showing the corrosive effects of negativity- selfishness, immorality, egotism, unchecked ambition and greed.
The terms Gold Standard TV or Modern Classic are often thrown around with wild abandon- here are two cases of absolute merit.
Hubris was never so calamitous. Loveable characters never so irredeemable. That’s chemistry for you.

(Although, frankly, maybe this whole pastime could be akin to fox-hunting, and is actually thought of disdainfully by 99% of the species population. What a twist.)
The Predator film series started with a bang, or splat, or whatever it sounds like when a spinal cord is pulled out. Arnie nailed it, McTieran owned it, and everyone else died for it.
The subsequent sequels and spin-offs have been met with mixed responses at best, but it speaks to the lasting and fundamental appeal of the concept, and Alien design itself, that keeps allowing for new and different interpretations of the franchise going ahead.

What's it about?
A fairy tale, a fantasy, and a sci-fi film about a young farm boy who, when his adoptive family is killed, joins a Wizard-Ronin, Space-Smuggler and a Walking Carpet to deliver a message, save a Princess and fight to help over-throw a fascist regime.
A film that instantly became a phenomenon, spawning sequels, prequels, tie-ins, spin-offs, rip-offs and taught literally hundreds of millions of children that there is wonder in the Universe.
If you grew up in the 80’s, there’s a strong chance this, and its two sequels, are as much a part of your childhood (and dare we say, adulthood) as anything else.
Not before or since has nostalgia fused with reality, creating a blanket of experiences ranging from your favourite bedspread to eventual world-view.
Easy to dismiss, easier to embrace, Star Wars marked a time and place like nothing else, all from the comfort of your own imagination, and a galaxy, far, far away.

Three confirmed bachelors have their worlds turned upside down and inside out when a baby is left on their doorstep.
…Do they find what it means to be responsible? Sort of.
…Do they discover there’s more to life than having fun? In a manner of speaking.
…Do they become better, richer people? Not really, to be honest.
None the less, this is a fun film, with likeable performances from the three leads, light direction from Nimoy, and lots of jokes about how baby poo is smelly.
A silly but likeable sequel follows our heroes and their now five-year-old ‘daughter’, as they travel to England, insult the locals and one of them finds love.

When a retired Special Forces colonel has his ten-year-old daughter kidnapped by an angry ex, John Matrix (Schwarzenegger) must go ‘Full Commando’, gun-up, man-up and tear-up the list of those responsible, killing with quips of the very highest order and dispensing violence most bloody.
What some consider the peak of Arnie’s 80’s Golden Era, Commando has it all. A tight plot, inventive deaths, a witty script and a leading man hitting a stride unparalleled in blockbusting action heroes before or since.
Fun, fast and frantic, Commando solidified Arnie as more than a novelty, instead a juggernaut of both biceps and bravado.
He’s been in better films, but perhaps none which take such delight in destruction, or mirth in mayhem.
