Romans 4:1–12—Abraham, David, and Salvation by Faith Apart from Works
Ken Corkins and pastor Rocky Ellison continue their Romans study (Season 18, Episode 9) by beginning Romans 4:1–12 in the RSV, where Paul answers objections to justification by faith by using Abraham and David as biblical proof. This week, we seen a turn in Jesus' ministry, he's no longer going to try to hide who is is, rather, he's going to start pushing back against the authorities.
Jesus apparently deliberately pokes at a group of Pharisees that are watching him. He lets his apostles glean grain from a field, and heals a man's arm on the Sabbath.
Jesus turns the tables on them in both situations.
This greatly upsets the Pharisee's, so they begin to devise ways to destroy Jesus.

This week we jump forward in Matthew and pick up Matthew chapter 11. This continues where Rocky left off in Matthew in 2018.
This jump works out well, because last week we had John baptizing Jesus in the Jordan river, now we find John in prison.

This week, we talk about the Baptism of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew.
John the Baptist is thought to have been raised in an Essene monastery in Southern Israel, near Qumran (where we will later find the "Dead Sea Scrolls").
There are four important groups that will come up multiple times in the Gospels;
The Sadducees, the Pharisees, the Scribes, and the Priests.
Sadducees were not very religious, but were wealthy, and held the majority of power in the Sanhedrin.
The Pharisees were very religious, and had a smaller amount of power in the Sanhedrin.
The Scribes were scholars who made copies of the books of the bible.
The Priests were descendants of Aaron, and were responsible for Holy days at the Temple.

This week we finish up 1st Peter, which also means we end season 1 of the podcast.
Peter warns us that the Devil is looking to devour you. Rocky explains that the word Peter uses for the Devil (Anioikos) is a term for the opposing attorney in a legal case, someone who is accusing you.
Peter also tells us that you need to stand strong against the devil, but that God will restore you when you reach heaven.
Ken and Rocky discuss Mark and Silas mentioned in the end of the leter, and Rocky gives historical cotaxt to why they are listed.

This week, Peter turns his attention to the "Elders" of the Church. Peter passes his commission from Jesus to "Feed my sheep" to the Elders of the Church.
Rocky explains that Peter intends this for all Church leaders, no matter their role. Peter tells the Elders they should serve out of love for God, not from a love of power.
Peter also tells those who are not in a leadership position, that they should submit to the authority of the church leaderships.
Ken discusses the words "Humble" and "Humility" (Greek word "Tapeinothete") .

This week, we finish chapter 4 of 1st Peter.
Peter describes the persecution in old testament language, and how if you're being persecuted, it's proof of your salvation.
Peter also uses a unique word in verse 16; alletriepiskopos. Which we learn is a word that Peter has made up, giving translators a challenge to translate correctly. The word effectively means that someone covets the life life of someone else, for a life free of persecution. Peter relates this to giving up your faith. Peter tries to dissuade the young Christians from this feeling.
This is also the first time that Peter calls the members of the Turkish church Christians; Christianoi.

Ken and Rocky continue the walk through 1st Peter, picking up where we left off two weeks ago.
We start with the Greek word: 'zelotes', which we translate as 'zealot', someone who is fanatical about something.
Rocky discusses 4 different theories for the time Jesus spent after he was crucified. He descended to Hell, but who did he preach to while there? And the different versions of the Apostle's Creed.
1 Peter 3:15 uses the Greek word 'Apologia' which translates to 'defense', or 'explanation', and we discuss the discipline of apologetics; "giving a reason for the hope you have" in Christianity.

Starting chapter 2 of First Peter, covering verses 1-12. Ken and Rocky discuss Antinomianism, the heresy that because Jesus paid the ransom for our sins, Christians are not bound by moral rules. They also discuss the "stone" scriptures.
Peter tells the Christians in Turkey that Jesus was rejected for his beliefs, so it shouldn't surprise them if they are being rejected for the same things.

Continuing our discovery of First Peter, Ken and Rocky dig into verses 3-12. Two main concepts emerge as Peter lays out the main points of the letter in this section;
1. Born again
2. Resurrection
Peter introduces a new word, Anagenao, meaning "born again". Peter tells us that once we are born again, we become something different, we are "regenerated" with the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Peter also gives us proof that God keeps His promises; The prophets were shown small glimpses of Jesus, and Jesus' resurrection is proof of life after death.
