Father Ed closes us out on season one of Behold by summarizing what we have dived deeper into this summer: our relationship, identity, and mission (RIM) as Christians. We share in that Sonship that Jesus experienced with His Father. And we also can say, I am the beloved son or I am the beloved daughter of God, and he is well pleased with me. From this identity we can be on mission to be disciples and make disciples of Christ.

Jesus said to them again in John's Gospel. Peace be with you as the Father has sent me. So I send you. Everything we do should be a response to the truth of who we are. And everything we do should be rooted in and flow out of our identity as a son or daughter. In other words, we experience fulfillment and true joy. When everything we do, every part of our lives is centered around our identity as beloved sons and daughters of the father who is crazy in love with each one of us. So relationship with God first. Then comes mission. But how do we know what that mission is, where that mission is, who that mission is supposed to be with?

Jesus invited people to be his friend and their friendship is based on a mutual love for his father. Jesus introduces them to his father by telling them about him, teaching them how to pray, how to live according to his word. Through this training, Jesus is living with them. He's eating with them, laughing with them.

He says in Matthew 28, 19, Go there for and make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them all you have observed and all I have commanded you and behold, I am with you until the end of the age. Jesus asks us not only to observe His teachings, to live out the teachings, but also to teach others what he has commanded. He calls us to be disciples.

The sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is the realization of Jesus is blood oath to us who are the beloved sons and daughters of God. Jesus fulfilled that blood oath by His death on the cross, by his laying down his life out of love for us. And when we come to Mass, as we do every Sunday, we to make a blood oath to Jesus.

God who has counted the hairs on our heads and has known us from before we were formed, has given us all that we need to live in our true identity. He has given us a place and a purpose, and once we can accept this love, we want to share this love. Whether we're physical parents or spiritual mothers or fathers the desire to experience the love of God is revealed to us further, in a glimpse, in parenthood.

It's in the sacrament of confession/reconciliation that we allow the voice of the Father to wash over us, to tell us who we are and how we remain in His love. There is nothing we can do or say or experience that will keep him from loving us.

Jesus Christ taught us how to be loving and that we are adopted, sons and daughters of God. The father is the one who is taking care of all of us. If we want to truly participate in what is happening here in the Catholic church, we must be baptized because it is the door to all the sacraments.

Our identity as God's beloved sons and daughters has absolutely nothing to do with what we do, what we've done, or what we will do. But it has everything to do with who we are. As we're living as beloved sons and daughters, we often enter into different roles. We are wives and husbands and athletes or students. We're bosses were neighbors, we're friends. And all of these roles are important. And all of these roles can be used for our sanctification. But when we mistake these roles as our primary identity, we're often left unfulfilled. Because you are his beloved son and you are his beloved daughter, and there is nothing you can do to change it. And he just wants to love you.

God sending his only son was not above the human condition. He was not above human suffering. Jesus experienced grief, sorrow, sadness, and even stress in his everyday life. God enters our suffering with us and he experiences it with us. It's how we respond that we make meaning of suffering.

When we sin, we do things like choose anger, pride, greed, lust and to be selfish. All of these things are often the easy choice to make because these choices are quick fixes for holes that we feel inside of our hearts, holes that are unsatisfied desires, or wounded desires. Desires to be chosen to be heard and understood. All of these desires are written on every human heart, and God would not have made us this way if He couldn't fulfill those desires. That's what being in a relationship is, to be loved by the Father. To receive all that the Father is giving us and that we give it all back. This powerful and perfect exchange of love is what we were made for.
