In this episode, as Rowena and Shelley gear up for season four, they revisit a fan favourite and one of their most referenced books and episodes: Gretchen Rubin's The Four Tendencies.

This book has been a game changer for both of them—in the way they run their businesses, understand themselves, and even interpret the books and ideas discussed on this podcast!

Are you like Rowena, self-directed and on top of deadlines but uneasy with changes? Or are you more like Shelley, spontaneous and bold but struggle with schedules and rules?

According to Gretchen Rubin, these behaviours occur as a result of our tendencies — whether you’re an Upholder, Obliger, Questioner, or Rebel.

In this episode, Rowena and Shelley revisit their first discussion of the book, covering its key themes and providing an overview. But that's not all—in addition to this episode, there are three more in the archive, delving deeper into The Four Tendencies. Be sure to check out episodes 2, 3, and 4 to hear all the insights!

Artwork Title: How to find tranquillity in the turbulence

It’s the first book for 2024, and Shelley and Rowena are excited to be talking about their top takeaways from the book Tranquility by Tuesday by time management guru Laura Vanderkam.

Tranquillity is a beautiful notion and very appealing to many, especially amid the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life —especially on an average Tuesday!

The book has some excellent tactics for calming the chaos without having to escape the realities of life, but rather to build a resilient schedule that’ll handle all the unpredictabilities that come our way.

Shelley and Rowena highlight their favourites of Laura’s nine rules, so if you’re looking for more tranquillity in life, be sure to join Shelley and Rowena for this episode.

In this episode, Shelley and Rowena reflect on their words for the year. The bookworms are revisiting the idea they shared in their most popular episode, Episode 21: "February is the new January — our guiding words." With over half the year behind them, they're checking in on their progress.

Shelley shares how her word "momentum" has supported her to make a particularly important decision in her business. And Rowena's phrase for the year, "curate and cultivate" has resulted in her writing a novel — much to her (happy) surprise!

If you've ever wondered how a "word of the year" actually works — then there's plenty for you in this episode. Shelley and Rowena will share more on how their words/phrases have helped them with intention-setting and a light focus to the year.

In this episode, Rowena and Shelley are continuing the conversation about the book Workstyle: A Revolution for Wellbeing, Productivity, and Society, by Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst.

They are going to be bringing the concept a little closer to home and sharing more about their own Workstyle Stories.

Specifically, they will explore one of the important tenets of the book, that you need to SET, PROJECT, and RESPECT the Workstyle.

That means you need to think about what your workstyle actually looks like, then tell the people you work with about your workstyle, and you need to respect other people’s workstyles — and if this revolution gains the traction it needs — other people will respect your workstyle too.

So, with that in mind, they are going to be PROJECTING their workstyle in this episode and hope it will give you some inspiration to SET your own workstyle. Which will lay the foundations for us all to RESPECT each other’s workstyles.

Become a better procrastinator A message from Shelley:

In Episode 26, I explained my 7Rs process for procrastinating better. I also wrote a blog post outlining the 7Rs process.

And now, I’m taking it a step further with an audio course on Becoming a Better Procrastinator.

My aim is to free up hours of time for you each week. So you can get the important stuff done and complete the projects that matter.

And because it’s an audio course, you can do it while you’re cooking dinner, shuttling the kids around in the car, or — even better, treating yourself to a solo retreat.

The course will be seven teaching sessions, each followed by a journaling session. So you could do it over seven days (teaching + journaling), 14 days (teaching one day, journaling the next — repeated for 7 days), or that solo retreat option, where you binge the whole lot on one day and then wake up the next day a better procrastinator!

It’s time for a revolution! Our new featured book is by business partners, Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst and it’s entitled Workstyle: A Revolution for Wellbeing, Productivity, and Society. Workstyle is a Sunday Times Number 1 Bestseller and when Lizzie and Alex talk about a revolution, they mean it.

If you're looking to work in your own way — throw out the 9-5, rethink hourly-based work, and even rethink flexible work, this is your book.

Lizzie and Alex have given expression to the ideas of individualised work, autonomy at work, and the freedom to choose when and where you work.

They make the case that by embracing Workstyle, you’ll get three major benefits:

  • you’ll improve your well-being in a holistic way;
  • you’ll become more productive; and
  • you’ll play your part in building a more inclusive society, where everyone will be free to work in their own Workstyle.

If you're sceptical about whether you can ever work in a workstyle way, then tune in — embracing your own ideal Workstyle might be more possible than you think.

“What would it mean to spend the only time you ever get in a way that truly feels as though you are making it count?”

That’s the question Oliver Burkeman poses at the end of Four Thousand Weeks, saying that it’s the most fundamental question of time management.

To answer that question, he poses five more specific questions, which Rowena and Shelley are diving into in this episode of Two Booked Up. The questions are:

  1. Where in your life or your work are you currently pursuing comfort, when what’s called for is a little discomfort?
  2. Are you holding yourself to, and judging yourself by, standards of productivity or performance that are impossible to meet?
  3. In what ways have you yet to accept the fact that you are who you are, not the person you think you ought to be?
  4. In which areas of life are you still holding back until you feel like you know what you’re doing?
  5. How would you spend your days differently if you didn’t care so much about seeing your actions reach fruition?

Rowena shares lots of ideas and examples of how we can use these questions to help guide our decision-making and our use of time in a more intentional way.

Learn more about becoming a better procrastinatorPart of feeling like you’re making your time count means procrastinating better. Shelley and Rowena discussed this in the last episode of Two Booked Up, Becoming a better procrastinator.

Shelley was so taken with the idea that she’s put together a blog post on how to procrastinate better. You’ll learn her 7-step process for better procrastination and ultimately get the important stuff done. There’s a nice downloadable printable for you there too.

When you hear the word “habits,” how do you feel? A sense of heaviness or obligation… feeling guilty about your “bad” habits… or even feeling ashamed that you haven’t been able to stick to your habits?

If that’s how you feel about habits, you’re not alone. But it doesn’t have to be that way! After Shelley’s takedown of Atomic Habits in the last episode, we thought we’d consider habits through a bit of a softer, more intentional lens in this episode.

So today on Two Booked Up, Rowena is encouraging you to bring some intention to your habits — so that they can be truly supportive of a bigger vision, rather than a whole list of “shoulds.”

She goes through seven core habit areas and encourages you to commit to just one habit that means something to you and aligns with the person you’re becoming.

This is not the first time Rowena has talked about habits, so she’s got plenty of extra resources for you too…

Shelley’s got a bee in her bonnet in this episode! The reason? Atomic Habits by James Clear. Since it was published in October 2018, it has appeared in the best-seller list multiple times and gets recommendations from far and wide — especially around the start of a new year.

Yet Shelley is not a fan and doesn’t believe this book deserves to be the definitive book on habits (gasp!). In this episode, she goes through her reasons why — and yes, spills some tea in the process!

Shelley argues that James Clear goes out of order, putting habit formation before much consideration of WHY you’d want to form those habits in the first place (leaving you with a list of “shoulds”). She also found his definition of the term “habits” to be too vague — so much so that he was giving credit to habits when the credit was due to something else entirely.

And then there’s the very behviourist (carrot-and-stick), hardcore, pushy way that James Clear approaches habits. And ooooh, does she take exception to that!

Listen in and let us know if you think Shelley has been too harsh on James Clear. Or, did she express some of the reservations you’ve had about the book?

Today Rowena and Shelley not only wrap up their conversations about Essentialism; The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown but they also bring together a few thematic threads from the other two books featured in this season — the Four Tendencies and The Lazy Genius Way.

Rowena shares how embracing the essentialist principles of ‘Explore’, ‘Eliminate’ and then ‘Execute’ in your career or business can lead to greater confidence.

When you combine the Essentialist approach with knowing yourself better (our top takeaway from The Four Tendencies) and naming what matters (our top takeaway from The Lazy Genius Way) these ideas all intersect to make you feel more confident.

And here’s the best part about stepping into your confidence and discovering your “highest level of contribution,” as Greg puts it… You find more ways to get paid to be YOU and really do work that comes easily to you and that is aligned with your strengths.

Does an Essentialist really play around? That seems a little frivolous!

Play is in fact a major part of living life as an Essentialist, as you’ll learn in this episode of Two Booked Up.

Rowena and Shelley are continuing their discussion of Essentialism; The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown, and doing a deep dive into one of the ideas that comes up in Chapter 7of the book: the importance of Play in the Essentialist life.

As The Playful Momprenueur, Shelley has done a lot of research into the concept of play and has made it her mission to be more playful in life and business. In her conversation with Rowena, she reflects on the fact that an Essentialist spends a lot of time exploring — and play is the perfect way to explore.

The bookworms review the properties of Play, as outlined by Stuart Brown in his book Play. They talk about why play is so beneficial, even for us serious adults ;). And they share real life examples of how you can incorporate play into your daily life and into your business or career.

Most of the examples will be simple to implement and pragmatically playful. Other examples involve Shelley acting like a Disney villain! Feel free to choose how silly you’d like your version of play to be…

It’s something of an Essentialist Exam on Two Booked Up today! How will Rowena and Shelley stack up as Essentialists?

In the episode, the bookworms consider these questionsin the light of their featured book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown:

  • In what ways did you already consider yourself an Essentialist before you read the book?
  • How have you become more of an Essentialist after reading the book?
  • In which areas do you feel you still have some work to do in order to become a "true Essentialist"?

This is a continuation of the discussion Shelley and Rowena started last week about the book. So, if you’d like an overview of Essentialism, make sure you’re subscribed to Two Booked Up and then you’ll be able to find the episode prior to this one, Episode 11.

But today is all about application of the principles of Essentialism — whether that’s in family, in business, or life in general.

As Shelley and Rowena consider these questions, we encourage you to ask them of yourself too. And if you’re inclined to share your insights, then you can find our online contact details at the end of this description.

It’s time for a new book! Today’s episode is the start of Rowena and Shelley’s discussion of Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown.

You might hear the term Essentialist and wonder what it means. It sounds a bit like Minimalist, so perhaps it’s about getting more done with less?

But no, being an Essentialist is not about getting more things done or how to do that, but rather how to get the right things done. Essentialists make the best use of their time and energy, in order to operate at their highest point of contribution. And they do that, by only doing what is essential!

In this episode, the first discussing the new book, Rowena and Shelley provide an overview of the 4 key principles of Essentialism and discuss the core mindsets covered in the book. They also share their top takeaways and the ideas from the book that have stuck with them.

Are you facing a tricky decision? Or considering making a change that feels… BIG? If you are, then you’re probably feeling overwhelmed and under pressure to make the “right” decision.

If that’s you, then take a nice deep breath and then listen to today’s episode of Two Booked Up, where Shelley Tonkin Smith (a business owner and homeschooling mom of two kids under 10) and Rowena Mabbott (a career and life confidence coach, who has tween and teen boys) talk about the power of naming what matters and how this simple step has made their decision-making a whole lot easier.

“Naming what matters” is a core foundation from The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi, the featured book at the moment on Two Booked Up.

Shelley shares about how naming what matters has helped her combat overwhelm in homeschooling. And Rowena reflects on how her decision to retrain as a coach all started when she named what mattered.

When we name what matters, we focus on what’s important to us in the moment, and what’s aligned with our values. This provides clarity and helps us to determine what the next best step should be.

Draw inspiration from Rowena and Shelley’s personal stories of how naming what matters has helped them to move into action. And learn how you can name what matters and become a Lazy Genius in your own life.

Today, Rowena and Shelley are considering where and how to use the Lazy Genius Principles in their small businesses. They’ll share where they are currently using these principles and where they could be leveraging Lazy Genius principles a little more to make their businesses simpler and also more fulfilling.

So if you’re a business owner, or you aspire to start a business sometime in the future, then listen in. There’ll also be plenty of food for thought for those of you who are in full-time employment too.

Between them, Rowena and Shelley have at least 20 years of combined experience running their own businesses alongside the journey of parenthood. Shelley has encouraged many people to take the leap into entrepreneurship and has supported them with copywriting and website development and advice.

Rowena and Shelley are discussing a new book, The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi.

Being a "Lazy Genius" might conjure up images of becoming a combination of Einstein, Mary Poppins and Leslie Knope — all while you laze around on the couch eating ice cream! But in fact, as you'll learn in this episode, being a Lazy Genius is more about being yourself and connecting to what really matters to you. If you can get that right, you can become a genius about what matters and then lazy about everything else!

Does that sound good to you? Then listen in to our conversation about The Lazy Genius Way today and if you haven't read the book already, consider getting yourself a copy

The idea behind The Lazy Genius Way is to be productive without sacrificing peace of mind, using the 13 Lazy Genius principles. The principles are designed to help you focus on what really matters and let go of what doesn't.

Listen in to the podcast as we give you a quick rundown of the 13 principles and expand on what it means to be a Lazy Genius. We also share our overall impression of the book and top takeaways.

Books we mention: Essentialism by Greg McKeown

Do Less by Kate Northrup

The Lazy Genius Kitchen by Kendra Adachi

Less Stuff by Lindsay Miles

Today on Two Booked Up, Shelley and Rowena are concluding the conversation sparked by Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Four Tendencies. We’ve had great conversations about how knowing your tendency — whether you’re an Upholder, Obliger, Questioner, or Rebel — can help you in both your personal and professional life.

One of the main themes that’s come through for us is the importance of knowing yourself. But sometimes getting to know yourself can be difficult! So today, we’re going to be extending the conversation a bit wider and talking about some of the other tools and methods we’ve used to get to know ourselves better.

When people grow in their self-knowledge, they’re more productive, more confident, and happier in their careers and relationships.

So, after the episode, go on and take yourself out on a date -- seriously! -- and get to know yourself better by using one or more of the methods we talk about on the show.

We’re continuing the conversation about Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Four Tendencies, which we started in our last two episodes. Today, we’re focusing on BUSINESS and how knowing your tendency can support you as a business owner.

We’re going to be covering the full gambit of what it takes to run a business — from crafting an offer, to marketing and messaging, then sales, delivery, and the day-to-day running in between. And we’re going to apply the Four Tendencies to each of those aspects of entrepreneurship.

Whatever your tendency — Upholder, Obliger, Rebel or Questioner — it’s our aim to help you harness your tendency’s strengths to be a successful and happy business owner.

We live in a world where we are constantly under pressure to “get things done!” But what makes us “get things done”? What makes us act or not act? In last week’s episode, Shelley and Rowena discussed the book The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin.

The book offered an answer to this question: why do we act? And the answer is not is not the same for all of us. Depending on how you respond to outer and inner expectations, you’ll act or choose not to act. And that’ll put you into one of four groups: an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel.

Today on the Two Booked Up Podcast, we’re going to be talking about how knowing our tendencies has helped us as parents — and as human beings. As we do so, you’ll learn:

  • How to harness the strengths of your tendency in daily life.
  • How knowing your tendency can support you in your relationship with your partner.
  • How knowing your tendency can support you as a parent.
  • Tips to talk to your children in a way that appeals to their particular tendency. Or better yet, appealing to all four tendencies at the same time.
  • What is Obliger Rebellion? And how can we all deal with it?

Today, Shelley and Rowena are going to be talking about The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. This book has been a game changer for both of us -- in the way we run our businesses and understand ourselves.

Are you like Rowena? You’re quite self-directed and don’t have too much trouble keeping to deadlines or managing your tasks. But, you get the jitters when your plans change or can’t understand why it’s so hard for someone to keep their promises.

Or are you more like Shelley? You’re spontaneous and boldly face up to challenges, but you feel constrained by schedules and rules. When you find something you love, you pursue it with all your heart, but if there’s something that has to be done, it’s just SO. HARD. TO. DO…

According to Gretchen Rubin, these behaviours occur as a result of our tendencies — whether you’re an Upholder, Obliger, Questioner, or Rebel.

[08:39] Structure of the Book
[10:54] What did we enjoy about the book?
[17:52] Strengths and weaknesses of each tendency
[21:57] Top Takeaways
[26:08] We can all create the life we want, but we must do it in a way that is right for us.
