At the Atlantic council’s 2025 global energy forum

The role of nuclear energy in global energy security

Nuclear energy represents a cornerstone of energy security for nations that have deployed nuclear reactor fleets. Now more than ever, nuclear energy offers a solution for countries across the Global North and Global South to secure their energy systems, while the horizon for nuclear innovation continues to expand in new and exciting ways. What is the state of nuclear development in the United States and abroad, and how can the United States work with global partners and al-lies to strengthen civil nuclear cooperation, supply chains, and workforce development?

speakers:

Sama Bilbao y León, Director General,

World Nuclear Association

Aleshia Duncan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Cooperation, Office of Nuclear Energy, US Department of Energy

Amb. Georgette Mosbacher, Co-Chair, Three Seas Programming, Europe Center,

Atlantic Council

Jeremy Pocklington, Permanent Secretary, Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, United Kingdom Robert Rudich, Chief Business Development Officer, Synthos Green

Reintroduction of the new podcast series

  1. I have a confession to make, over the past days of the first footprint of this podcast, i have been exposed to different concepts, thoughts and biases in the push to unveiling the new normal of nuclear strengths. This podcast is a year old and i am grateful for many things; 1. to those who have said yes to us; you made us grow and we did not want to let you down, hence the resurrections from the brief lul. 2. To those who said no and kept silent on our request; you made us look inwards and reevaluate and better ourself
  2. I have been brought up to believe that building a lasting foundation takes time. I grew to know this is true in many situation except when there is need to boostrap. We’ll reintroduce this podcast with a new banging theme that seems to ask a question, this question seeks to provoke thoughts, beliefs, reveal scientific truths and hopefully shine some light on the paths of those who are lost in the dark of the meaning of nuclear technology. we wan to enlighten, educate, train and perhaps advice policy towards nuclear renaissance in Africa. The case for climate is becoming stronger, our socio-political construct is being disrupted and the need for new trade policies in the face of the emergent global situations. Recently, the vice president of the federal republic of Nigeria, professor Yemi osinbajo in his speech to the Atlantic council has stated the need for a just transition, highlighting the inclusion of nuclear in the European green taxonomy but remained neutral on the nuclear path of Nigeria, the south African nation has some fascinating cliché that promotes nuclear in a unique way, Kenya is strong at work with development partners. With abundant gas, evolving need for stronger grid capacity. it is obvious that the future of energy sufficiency and sustainability will be a though one without nuclear. Now let know what nuclear means to you? We will be talking with various individuals on what nuclear means to them and hopefully you will be inspired.

Episode Notes;

  • The Decouple podcast is borne out of the concern for a clean and sustainable future towards expanding human flourishing with strong support for nuclear as a way to achieving this elegant future; obtaining its name from the Ecomodernist manifesto by Michael Shellenberger and his team.
  • It is not Africa's responsibility to solve the climate crisis/problem.
  • Nuclear inarguably has high energy density and is only just to use it for sustainable development
  • Radiation fallout from Fukushima accident did not kill anybody but rather the panic reaction to the tsunami/evacuation that caused the deaths.
  • Interesting twist to SMRs not being the only viable solution and the need for humility to build nuclear power plants.

Episode Notes:

The educational series is borne out of the desire to make sounds of the contents and meanings of terminologies, concepts, theories, symbols and connotations in nuclear science and engineering technology desimmination with voice only. We understand in these days of attention deficit, it is thoughtful to use the voice method so as to free the listener to do other stuffs whilst listening and learning on the go. Just Plug and Play. However, to engage the willing listener more, we will make effort at illustrations whose links will be attached to the show notes. We also understand how diverse our audience is and tried to categorise the knowledge levels in to Proton, Electron and Neutron (tobe explained later) for the benefit of all levels of audience. We hope that your kid/toddler, old granny and witty youth young chap can be well served with the contents of this educational series.

Naming convention: "Vignette category | Topic | Part (optional)"

"E.g: Neutron Edu Vignette #1 | Radiation Symbol and meaning | part 1"

Now to the knowledge level categorisation;

  1. Neutron (newbie/beginner): The listener is not expected to know much about nuclear science and technoogy, this could be a good place to start if you are wondering what nuclear science, technology, engineering and so on means. it could be for a politician or a netral person oblivious of nuclear

  2. Proton (professional): The listener is expected to know a little about nuclear science and technology, a basic knowledge of high school or A-level nuclear physics is assumed, it is expected that the listener be knowledgeable in basic concepts of nuclear science; s/he could be a professional in the industry or looking to join one, if not, please refer to the beginner/newbie/neutron category

  3. Electron (Expert): The listener is expected to be a professional or in the process of becoming a professional; s/he could be a graduate student or researcher or early career professional in nuclear profession. You might get something like how to apply advanced computing to solving some context specific problems. if this level is too complex, visit other levels explained before.

National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) : https://www.nrwdi.org.za/

Inclusion and Diversity has been a major component of the NRWDI human resource policy

Any Government needs to establish the infrastructure to deal with the waste decisively and also provide funds for the long term management of nuclear waste. A good regulatory body is very crucial

  • Transparency, skill development, and stakeholders involvement are essential ingredients for waste management.
  • The pillars of waste management is a tripod of care for humans, environment and the future generations; this is balanced on/summed up in sustainability
  • Stakeholders' Strategies: DAD = Decide - Anounce - Defend or MUM = Meet - Understand - Make decisions
  • What are ownerless wastes?
  • Education is the greatest weapon to destroy poverty - Nelson Mandela
  • Do not let your conditions define you. Dare to take the decision to live your dream. It is time for the youth to take leadership and they must be part of every programme especially in skills development
