Welcome to the Are You Menstrual Podcast with your hosts, Amanda, a women’s health dietitian and Emily, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. In this podcast, Amanda and Emily help you navigate the confusing world of women’s hormones and teach you how to have healthy periods. Each week will be diving into a different topic on women’s health and sharing our perspective using nutrition, female physiology, and metabolic health. The goal is to help you wade through conflicting health information and empower you on your healing journey. We hope you enjoy it!
In this episode, I am joined by Taylor Goldberg to discuss all things hypermobility. This is a diagnosis that I have seen in an increasing number of clients, so I’m excited to have Taylor on and educate more on the topic. We previously discussed hypermobility in the two MCAS episodes with Michelle Shapiro. I’ll link them below!
Taylor is a Chiropractor-turned Virtual Hypermobility Coach who helps people struggling with hypermobility (and related conditions) navigate the newness and unknowns of HSD/hEDS, enabling them to understand their body's unique needs and regain a fulfilling life. In addition to assisting clients with hypermobility, she recently launched a course aimed at helping clinicians better understand how to assist their hypermobile patients. Taylor possesses a unique perspective rooted in her education and personal experiences with hypermobility, which has driven her to initiate changes not only within the hypermobility community but also within the chiropractic field. She recently introduced a mentorship program called 'Clinical Concepts,' where they delve into the drawbacks of one-size-fits-all chiropractic practices and underscore the significance of an evidence-based approach to treatment and self-care.

We are back with part two with Michelle Shapiro! After our initial discussion in the last episode about how these conditions relate to one another, today we are diving into conventional treatments and functional approaches for MCAS, POTS, and hypermobility. Michelle and I discuss why jumping straight to restrictive diets might not be the best long-term solution, why stabilizing mast cells should come first, and why specialized care is crucial.

Today, Michelle Shapiro joins me again for another episode! Michelle is an integrative and functional registered dietitian who has helped over 1,000 clients reverse their anxiety, heal longstanding gut issues and immune issues, and approach their weight in a loving way. Together, we discuss the complex world of long Covid, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and histamine issues and Michelle shares her personal journey and insights on how chronic stress, gut health, and hypermobility intersect with these conditions. This episode not only provides practical strategies for managing these conditions but also emphasizes the importance of understanding your body's unique needs. Michelle and I address how excessive mast cell activation can affect day-to-day life and pregnancy, offering a hopeful perspective on achieving full recovery through both conventional and non-conventional treatments.

In this episode, I’m going through some of the most helpful areas to focus on for an enjoyable postpartum season with your new baby. Before I dig in, I want to acknowledge that there are many times when things happen that make our postpartum experience less enjoyable that are completely out of our control. I also think we can recover and heal from a stressful postpartum experience. Both us and our babies.

In this episode, I am sharing my second daughter, Amaia’s birth story. I will also be answering questions this community submitted on IG! This is my birth experience and I will say, I had a beautiful birth at home, it could not have gone better. My first birth was very painful, I thought about giving up multiple times, and had a lot of fear in the beginning. I held a lot of resentment for a while about the pain I went through but I’ve come to change my tune and be grateful for that birth. Katelyn from Happy Homebirth Podcast once told me you have the birth you need. Making the transition from maiden to mother the first time is a lot, at least it was for me. The painful birth prepared me and gave me a little taste for what was ahead. I love being a mom and my entire life revolves around my girls, but it doesn’t mean it’s not hard. It has changed me in ways I couldn’t imagine. If your birth was challenging, I hope it changed you for the better too.

In this episode, I am joined by Carrie Bennett, to teach you about light, circadian rhythm, and how these impact your hormones. As a college athlete, supposedly at the pinnacle of health, Carrie began suffering chronic joint issues and insomnia. After her first child was born, she developed debilitating stomach pain, adrenal fatigue, and brain fog. Armed with a BS in Biology, an MS in Nutrition, and certifications as a personal trainer, massage therapist, and breathing coach, she still couldn't find the root of her issues. That's when she found quantum biology. Now, as an online educator, clinician, and faculty member of the Quantum Biology Collective, Carrie's mission is to teach her clients how to create a healing environment by applying quantum health strategies around light, water, electrons, and mitochondrial support. Given these tools, clients who have spent years trying to improve their health—just as Carrie did—finally experience powerful healing and lasting benefits.

In this episode, I am interviewing Michelle Shapiro, an integrative functional registered dietitian who's going to unravel the confusion that often surrounds reflux treatment. We'll explore why conventional medicine's approach to reflux may not always be in your stomach's best interest, and why you may sometimes need to fuel the fire. Michelle helps us understand the contributing factors of reflux symptoms – ranging from a burning throat and chest pain to that nagging feeling of hunger paired with nausea. Michelle also cautions about supplements and touches on the complex relationship between pregnancy, hiatal hernias, and how managing stress and histamine levels plays a vital role in your health.
If you've ever wondered about the connection between stress, your thyroid, and the importance of listening to your body – you won't want to miss this episode. We also have a special Q&A waiting for you over at patreon.com/hormonehealingrd.

In this episode, I am covering how to use hair tissue mineral analysis or HTMA to assess your stress. This is one of the most valuable parts of the test, in my opinion. You get to understand what stage of stress you are in and why you may or may not be handling stress well. For most people, it is a big eye opener and something that can finally lead to confronting your stress and making lifestyle changes. If you are interested in how you can learn more about your thyroid from an HTMA, please listen to the previous episode where I covered this in detail.

In this episode, we are wrapping up our case study series with a case study focusing on fatigue. Our third case is of a previous course student and 1:1 client, Taylor. This case study is shared with permission. We did change her name and a few details to protect her privacy.
As always, this episode is for informational purposes only. Please talk with your healthcare provider before making any nutrition or lifestyle changes.
Taylor came to us with extreme fatigue (and I mean extreme) and a slew of other symptoms that were very concerning to her. She started out in the Master Your Minerals course and then did a results review with me. She discovered she had very low mineral levels and was as depleted as she felt. After making some hard life decisions and prioritizing her health, she regained the energy she lost and started to feel like herself again.

We have our second case study this week focusing on a gut health case. Erin is joining me again to help break it all down for you. We went through a thyroid case last week, so if that’s of interest to you, make sure you listen to the previous episode as well.
We will wrap up the case study series with a final review of a client that struggled with fatigue and energy issues next week.
Our second case is of a previous course student and 1:1 client, Jenna. I reached out to her to ask if we could share her story since I think many people will relate. We did change her name, but all other details are accurate.
Jenna’s main concerns were not necessarily digestive symptoms, but many things came back to the poor health of her gut, which is why we chose her for this case. Her main concerns were headaches/migraines around her cycle, acne, hair loss, and recurrent UTI’s and yeast infections. She did an HTMA through the Master Your Minerals course and had very high copper and calcium. It freaked her out and she wanted additional guidance so she got 1:1 support through a results review and then became a 1:1 client to work deeper on healing her gut after rebalancing her copper levels. This allowed her to reduce her acne, headaches/migraines, and get rid of the recurrent infections she was dealing with. And most importantly to her, finally put a stop to her hair loss.

We have our first case study this week and joining me to break it all down for you is one of my clinical nutritionists, Erin. We will be covering a thyroid case this week since that’s what my patrons wanted the most and then next week we will dig into a digestive/gut health case. We will wrap up the case study series with a final review of a client that struggled with fatigue and energy issues.
Our first case is of a previous course student and 1:1 client, Tina. I reached out to her to ask if we could share her story since I think many people will relate. We did change her name, but all other details are accurate.
Tina’s main concern was thyroid health and specifically, Hashimoto’s. She did an HTMA through the course and noticed her calcium was really high. When she got 1:1 support we worked on rebalancing calcium through her nutrition and lifestyle primarily, as stress was a big part of her high calcium. This gave her the energy she was looking for and greatly reduced her thyroid antibodies since high calcium can slow down our metabolism and impact all systems in the body.

In this episode, I am digging into important minerals to consider for midlife women. There are five common mineral imbalances that I tend to see in perimenopausal and menopausal women. These are not always the case, but the majority of midlife women that I’ve worked with fall into this category. I’m going to break down each one and how they can impact symptoms and health concerns women experience during menopause as well. In this episode, I am focusing on an important topic that has been heavily requested, menopause! When I think about how to thrive during menopause and set yourself up for success, I think of four main areas: thyroid, stress, nutrition, and our daily habits. If you’ve already gone through menopause, I just want to say it’s never too late to work on the things I cover today. Also, if you did a lot of work and feel like you’ve tried all the things but are still really struggling through menopause, I know that can be really hard, but making nutrition and lifestyle changes is still supporting your long term health. It’s easy to forget that everything we’ve done our entire lives is going to impact our menopausal experience. When we’ve lived a certain way for a long time it can take time to undo a lot of that dysfunction. Be patient and know you are still doing really good things for your body and future health.

Digesting our food well is crucial for a healthy gut, so make sure you listen to that one too! I’ll be referencing it a bit throughout to tie it all together.

While the internet would have you believe that you need a supplement or cleanse to support your body’s detox pathways, our bodies detoxify daily on their own. We can absolutely have difficulty with certain organs that can negatively impact our ability to detox, but you might be surprised at what will actually help you detox better. No, it’s not milk thistle. While I do love this herb, there’s a lot more to supporting liver detoxification and detoxification in general than just taking a supplement. If you want to learn more about specific foods and supplements that can support detoxification once you have the foundations in place, join patreon.com/hormonehealingrd to get access to this week’s bonus episode where I dive different options for detox support depending on what you have going on.

As we continue to work through the foundations for season 5, we have an important topic this week: digestion! Many women struggle with their digestion whether that be bloating, constipation, loose stools, reflux, etc. A lot of our digestive struggles come back to our body’s inability to produce optimal digestive juices and enzymes because a lot of us are living in a constantly stressed state or have lived in one in the past.
In this episode, I am going to break down exactly how our bodies digest our food and how you can support your own digestion right now at home. If you want to learn more about how to specifically support constipation and loose stools, make sure you join my Patreon at patreon.com/hormonehealingrd. I go into specific things you can do for those two digestive issues in the bonus episode.

Supplements are so common these days that it’s easy to forget just how powerful they are. You can go to the grocery store, pharmacy, and most prominently, online to find just about anything you need. I think it’s great that access to supplements is so widely available, but the downside to supplements being so readily available is that they are often taken without as much consideration. Because we can add them to our cart so easily, we may not realize that they could cause more harm than good depending on the supplement and the person.
Again, supplements are powerful, they are an amazing resource to have, but my goal with this episode is to teach you how to analyze supplements that you’re interested in or that are being marketed to you and know go through a series of questions to have an idea of whether or not they are a good fit for you.
I have a bonus episode this week inside Patreon that takes this a step further and highlights certain conditions and supplements that CAN be helpful. You can join my patreon community at patreon.com/hormonehealingrd.

Stress is a part of everyday life, especially in the fast-paced society we live in today. Many people are aware that having too much stress isn’t good for their health and have at least some idea that stress can cause both physical and mental issues. But what do we do about it? How can we mitigate unnecessary stressors and make our bodies more resilient to the unavoidable stressors in our day to day? That’s what I want to talk about in today’s podcast episode!

It’s time to wrap up season four of mineral deep dives with a fun recap episode. I will be sharing the highlights for each mineral and if you haven’t listened to an episode and something I talk about interests you, I hope it encourages you to dig a little deeper.
Tune in to hear:

This is our last mineral deep dive of season 4. I covered 7 minerals over the last 8 episodes (iron was a doozy) and will be wrapping up the mineral deep dives with a look at selenium. As always we will go through what selenium does in the body, the recommended daily intake, how it impacts our hormones, and then I will answer your questions at the end with a rapid fire. If you want to learn about the different mineral interactions with selenium, hear me walk through a case study of a client that benefited from selenium, and get a sample day of optimizing the selenium in our food, you can get access to all bonus content on patreon.com/hormonehealingrd.com.

Strap in, we have a controversial one. It’s time for our mineral deep dive on iron! The mineral that gets many people up in arms, probably even more so than copper. Like most minerals, I think once you understand how our bodies regulate iron, you can see past the confusing information that tends to go to extremes. Most often, things fall somewhere in between. In this episode, I will go through the iron recycling system, what we use iron for in the body, and different iron imbalances. The bonus episode will breakdown iron case studies where I show an iron deficiency case and an iron overload case that go through labs. I also have an iron rich foods list with the amount of iron per serving and a sample day showing how you can get 20-25mg of heme iron and 34-38mg of total iron. I also cover how iron impacts estrogen. You can get access to the bonus episode by joining patreon.com/hormonehealingrd.

In this week’s bonus episode on Patreon, I cover the relationship between zinc and copper as well as other minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium. I also answer the common question of when someone should supplement with zinc and go through options for that as well as provide a list of zinc rich foods and a sample day of someone getting 39mg of zinc from their diet. Welcome to season 4 of the podcast! This season we are focusing on minerals. How to test them, what the different minerals do in our bodies, how they impact our hormones and overall health as well as other systems of the body.
We also have some exciting podcast updates. You heard me mention a podcast Patreon in the introduction. You may be thinking, what patreon? The AYM podcast patreon is new! I started it in February as a way to bring the podcast community together and provide more resources to support listeners on their healing journeys. You will still get your weekly episode of the podcast, but it will be a bit shorter (hopefully) and easier to digest.
Each week, patrons get a bonus episode of the podcast along with downloadable resources. For example, in this episode I’m focusing on how to test minerals and what different types of tests tell you. The bonus episode is a results review of a hair test and blood work to help bring all the principles of the episode together. The downloadable resource is a PDF of the main principles of mineral testing and lab testing resources.
When the podcast isn’t in season, I am creating content based off monthly surveys to ensure I’m giving members the resources they need. This tier is $10. I also have an exclusive tier that is $20 a month and allows you to submit a voicemail question that I answer during a pre-recorded Q&A. Visit patreon.com/hormonehealingrd to learn more and become a patron!

In this episode, I am doing a deep dive on cholesterol and the many different things it does in the body as well as how it impacts our hormones. I’ll also be covering how certain minerals can impact cholesterol and go through some things to consider when looking at your cholesterol lab test results.
This podcast episode is for informational purposes only. While I will be discussing lab tests and possible interpretations for results, you can’t interpret a lab completely without having a whole person to compare it to. If you have concerns about your cholesterol, please share them with your doctor or medical provider.

In this episode, we are focusing on postpartum exercise with Dr. Lindsey Mathews Cantu. Lindsey is committed to supporting women in the various seasons of their lives. She started BIRTHFIT in 2013 with a deep belief that movement can be the bridge to cultivate our own intuition and a trust in our bodies. Lindsey is a Nervous System Based Chiropractor, Mercier Therapist, Birth Doula, NLP Practitioner, and Strength and Conditioning Coach. Through all the hats she wears in this world, she created BIRTHFIT as she saw a huge gap for sustainable, nervous system based movement and training for women in all chapters and cycles of their lives, specifically cycling, preconception, pregnant, and postpartum women.
Beyond BIRTHFIT, Lindsey works in her chiropractic wellness practice, Willow Haus, that she co founded with Dr. Bria and Matt Mutch. Majority, if not all, of her clientele that she sees in office are women and pediatrics. In her spare time, Lindsey enjoys connecting with her husband Lance, working in her garden, and taking long, slow walks.
Lindsey’s core values are LOVE, FREEDOM, and CONNECTION.

In this episode, I am breaking down how the copper IUD works and how it impacts different aspects of our health. When I posted a question box for this episode in my stories a couple weeks back I got a lot of questions about how the copper IUD can impact the thyroid, hormones, if it can cause copper toxicity, and more so I’ll be covering all of that too!

I have another deep dive episode for you! In this episode, we are focusing on copper. I have a podcast episode that I did in season one that’s all about the connection between copper and iron, but copper deserves its own episode. I will also do a separate deep dive on iron in season 4 of the podcast next year where I will be doing all deep dives for one season. Just a reminder before we jump into today’s episode. This podcast is for informational purposes only. I will be mentioning some lab values, foods, and supplements surrounding copper, but it’s important you talk about any changes you’re considering with your medical provider.

In this episode, I am breaking down a popular topic in the wellness world: histamines! I get a lot of questions about histamine intolerance and if people should cut out x, y, z foods. As usual, I don’t recommend going straight to cutting out foods. Can that help in the short term with symptoms? Yes, but it’s not getting to the root of the issue. This doesn’t mean you can’t cut out certain things that are causing you discomfort to get some relief, but hopefully this podcast episode will inspire you to work on other areas as well.

**In this episode, we are focusing on the gallbladder and how not only can it impact your hormones but how hormonal changes can impact your gallbladder function as well. I have Olivia Haas also known as the Gallbladder Nutritionist on Instagram with me today to dive deep into this topic. Olivia is a board certified nutritionist specializing in all things gallbladder health. Her personal journey with digestive issues, hypothyroidism and gallbladder disease is what has led her to start her private practice helping individuals who are trying to keep their gallbladder or people struggling with digestive issues after gallbladder surgery.
Along her way, she realized there was a lack of education regarding this condition, what caused it, how diet and lifestyle impact this disease and how to best support the body without a gallbladder. Through her experience she grew a passion to help other individuals with gallbladder disease feel supported, gain nutrition clarity and help teach them how to be advocates for their health. Olivia takes a root cause approach with her clients. She looks beyond the gallbladder to bring the body back into balance and helps clients create sustainable, long term healthy habits every step of their gallbladder journey.**

Many of you have been wanting to better understand the importance of iodine for thyroid health after I shared my experience with supplementing on my Pregnancy Journey episode. I have a special episode of the podcast this week. I’m sharing an interview I did on holistic dentistry inside the Hormone Healing Membership* with Dr. Kelly Blodgett.
Dr. Blodgett is a native Oregonian who attended grade school through high school in Southwest Portland. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Oregon and completed his pre-doctoral sciences at Portland State University. Dr. Blodgett attended the OHSU School of Dentistry and graduated in June of 1999 where he earned the “Going the Extra Mile” award from his own classmates. Throughout his career, he’s become a recognized leader in minimally-invasive dentistry, dental lasers, computerized dental technology, and holistic care. He has been featured in numerous dental journals, on television, and in magazines for the innovative care he provides. He is truly a modern pioneer in progressive dental care. Dr. Blodgett and his wife, Julie, have been married since 1994 and have two beautiful daughters: Sara, born in 2002, and Megan, born in 2005. They reside in Southwest Portland, just up the hill from his high school alma mater, Wilson High School.
The reason Dr. Blodgett’s work is so appealing to me is because of how he truly takes the word holistic to heart. He wants to know everything he can about a patient and take the whole person, their mental/emotional/physical health history, and how they feel into consideration when advising. Advising is the keyword here. He wants his patients to decide what is best and fully respects each and every decision. That’s not easy to find, even in functional medicine. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

In this episode, we are focusing on strength training and how it can help support healthy hormones. I’m joined by my friend and colleague, Adina Rubin. Adina is a Strength Coach and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner that specializes in helping women gain energy and get strong.
After driving herself into the ground with years of under-eating, doing way too many HIIT classes and taking hormonal birth control, Adina realized that real food, strength training and stress management were the keys to vibrant and optimal health and she set out on a mission to share that with as many women as possible.
Through her signature program Strength Training for Happy Hormones, Adina uses low rep kettlebell training with a major emphasis on pelvic floor health to make strength as accessible as possible no matter what stage of life you’re in or where you are on your healing journey.
As a Certified Russian Kettlebell Instructor, Prenatal and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist, Restorative Wellness Practitioner and Root Cause Protocol Consultant, Adina has shaped her unique framework to help women achieve optimal hormone and metabolic health.
Adina began unlocking her own optimal physical and mental health when she trained competitively for powerlifting and she thinks all women need to learn what it feels like to lift heavy things. She wants you to know, you’re stronger than you think you are.

I have a fun episode for you today! I’m doing a third trimester pregnancy update. So many of you found the first and second trimester recap I did helpful, so I thought I would do a third trimester one and answer some of the questions submitted on Instagram. My first and second trimester were pretty smooth. I have honestly felt really good throughout this pregnancy. I will say after recording that update talking about how good I felt, one week later (when I officially entered the third trimester and hit 28 weeks) I woke up with eczema around my eyes and really bad pubic pain. Nine weeks later my eczema has pretty much cleared up and the pubic pain has reduced/I’ve learned to manage it, but wow, did I learn a lot the last couple of months. I’m extremely fortunate that as soon as I had an issue I easily found a resource to help me (it really helps working in the women’s health space). I’m hoping by sharing this information it helps those that don’t have as much access.

Are You Menstrual? –
In this episode, I’m covering a highly requested topic: how to support your body when transitioning off of hormonal birth control. Coming off the birth control pill is what sparked my own hormone healing journey and there’s so much that I wish I knew back then that I will be sharing with you in this episode. We will be focusing on five main areas that you want to consider when rebalancing post birth control. These are what I find the most important to address with clients and my own experience.
One quick thing I want to note is that you can apply pretty much all of these principles to support your body while continuing hormonal birth control as well. This is probably the top question I get when I talk about this, so I figured I’d address it right away. If you’re currently on hormonal birth control and plan on staying on, this episode is still for you.

She founded Lymph Love Club in 2020 and began sharing her lymph moving tips and tricks on social media as a resource for her clients to support their lymphatic health outside of the work they were doing 1:1. The response from women all over the world was overwhelming and she knew she had to get the word out. Now she's teaching online courses and in-person workshops on how easy it is to keep that healing river flowing, right from home! Her philosophy and approach is simple. Keep the good stuff circulating and get the bad stuff out. She says "In order to be in radiant health, we have to support and work with the body on every level. Our lymphatic system has an intimate relationship with every other system in our body and is designed to do just that."
The goal of this episode is to give you an introduction to the lymphatic system and some ways you can start supporting your lymph today.

In this episode, we are taking a deep dive into what causes hair loss and how we can support healthy hair. As with most things related to women’s health, the topic of hair loss is complicated. Rarely is there a sole reason for hair loss. For example, hypothyroidism and inadequate thyroid hormone levels are among the most common causes of hair loss. The underlying question then becomes what is causing the hypothyroidism? More often than not, it is not merely one cause. There are a few things to consider, such as the individual’s nutrition, lifestyle, and stress level. Are they eating enough? Are they consuming enough nutrient-dense foods? Do they have a nutrient deficiency that isn’t being met by their current diet? How stressed are they? Cortisol, a stress hormone, directly blocks the conversion of thyroid hormone. When it comes to supporting healthy hair and healing hair loss, we have to consider several different areas, which is what we are going to get into in this episode.

My goal with this episode is to help remove the fear around nutrition during pregnancy, especially certain foods and supplements.

Are You Menstrual? –In this episode, we cover a topic we get endless questions and DM’s about--the ups and downs of the healing journey and specifically what causes this--shifts in estrogen or what we like to call estrogen waves. Healing isn’t linear, but man, sometimes it is rough. We’ve been there. You see some improvements, then your next cycle hits you like a bag of bricks, you’re breaking out, and your clothes are getting tighter. When starting our healing journey, we often have a picture in our minds of what this will look like. Typically we are thinking of feeling better after a few weeks or a couple of months, and while this is the case for some people, sometimes it takes longer, and most women feel a little worse before they feel better. This is all a result of your body adjusting to its environment and rebalancing hormones and minerals.

In this episode, we are focusing on my favorite method of birth control: The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) with a certified fertility awareness coach, Nina Boyce. Nina is a certified Fertility Awareness Educator and Reiki Practitioner based in Columbus, OH. Her coaching programs focus on FAM for optimized conception, and/or non-hormonal birth control, and she passionately believes that all women deserve to understand how their body functions. Nina takes a holistic approach, focusing on nutrition and mineral testing, cycle charting, and lifestyle modifications to help her clients achieve their desired fertility goals. She is also the host of the Healing Hormones Podcast, where she interviews leading women in the world of menstrual health.
While FAM is an amazing form of birth control and can also help you conceive, it’s so much more than that. FAM gives you an inside look into your hormones, stress, and overall health. I personally think it is an essential tool on your healing journey and can serve you through the many transitions of female life. If you’re wondering about hormonal birth control methods, we discussed those and their impact in our last episode.

Are You Menstrual? –So far on the podcast, we have discussed a wide variety of topics spanning women’s health and hormones, from mineral balance and metabolic health to PCOS and menopause. One area that we have yet to cover is birth control—which we realize is hugely important to most women in their childbearing years. A whopping 80% of women will take the pill at some point in their lifetime, and for that reason, we didn’t want to go any longer without speaking on it. In this episode, we’ll be covering what you need to know about hormonal birth control, including the different types, how HBC works to prevent pregnancy, and the specific impact each type can have on the female body.
Hormonal birth control (HBC) has been a big part of my health journey and morphed my career path, and is something that has impacted many of my clients' lives as well. I don't want any woman EVER to feel bad about taking hormonal birth control. I took it for seven years and then had a copper IUD, and I don't regret it. This allowed me to avoid pregnancy while finishing college and starting my career. I have since adopted and successfully used the Fertility Awareness Method, but we’ll go deeper into that in our next episode on non-hormonal birth control. Our goal today is to educate you on the effects of birth control so that you can make an informed decision for yourself going forward.

SHOW NOTES:
Are You Menstrual? In this episode, we are covering another foundational topic for hormone health: light exposure and circadian rhythm. We can’t talk about one without mentioning the other, and many women don’t realize that both things have a significant impact on hormone health.
Our bodies take in everything in our environment as information, and light is a big part of that. The focus is often on reducing blue light exposure, but increasing sunlight is just as important, if not even more critical. Our light exposure can impact our circadian rhythm, which is our body’s internal clock. This then trickles down to impact digestion, hormones, sleep, energy, and more!

Today we’re covering a women’s health topic that is near and dear to my heart...and that is PCOS (or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in the U.S., and it’s a problem that affects 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. That’s A LOT of us. But the worst part is that there is still so much confusion surrounding this modern syndrome and what causes it—even down to its name, which IMO is a complete misnomer (but we’ll get into that later).
Amanda and I have both dealt with the symptoms of PCOS at different points in our lives, and we both know many women who currently struggle with it—which is why we wanted to devote a whole two episodes to this particular hormonal health challenge. The truth is, there’s a ton to unpack when it comes to this common condition, but we’re going to do our best to clear the fog surrounding PCOS.

In this episode, we are diving into a topic that many women can relate to--period pain. Period pain used to be considered purely psychological and a reason for women to get out of their responsibilities. Since it couldn’t be identified by a physical or gynecological exam or tested for, those who suffered were mislabeled and told to deal with it. No one could see it, so it didn’t seem real.
Now we know that period pain is very real and can present itself in many ways ranging from cramps, back pain, breast tenderness, headaches/migraines, joint/muscle pain. While we will talk about specific symptoms and get into the types of period pain in this episode, we want you to keep in mind that symptoms are communication from your body. It’s tempting to want to find a remedy for a symptom, but in reality, we need to understand why you have that symptom in the first place. This often comes back to metabolic health. If you haven’t listened to the first episode of the podcast, we recommend starting there!

In our episode 8, we shed some light on the popular supplements that we choose to avoid and why, going into detail about how supplementing with things like iron, zinc, and even vitamin D can do more harm than good.
This doesn’t mean that we’re against all supplements, just that we believe that supplements are powerful and should not be taken lightly. We also encourage our clients to focus on FOOD FIRST when it comes to boosting your minerals and balancing your hormones. That said, we know that supplements can be a helpful and necessary part of a healing protocol, and today’s episode is all about which ones we love and take ourselves for optimal health.
Again, we encourage you to do your own research and always talk with your doctor or dietitian before you stop or start any supplement. We are nutrition professionals, but we are not YOUR nutrition professionals. This podcast is for informational purposes only.

The last episode, we focused on how to replenish nutrients and specific minerals in the body. The main focus is food, but we know that there will be questions about supplements, and we do plan to share the top supplements that we can’t live without, but we wanted to first go through popular supplements that can actually cause more harm than good to your minerals first.
We know that many of these will surprise you. We encourage you to do your own research and always talk with your doctor or dietitian before you stop or start any supplement. We are nutrition professionals, but we are not YOUR nutrition professionals. This podcast is for informational purposes only.

In today’s episode, we continue our mineral series to expand the conversation around two important minerals that are often misunderstood: copper and iron. The health and wellness community focuses so much on iron--recommending iron supplementation, multivitamins or prenatals with iron, and recommending ferritin levels 80-100 for things like hair growth. Iron deficiency is so much more complex than the health community presents it to be. Most of us already have iron accumulated in the body; adding more iron on top of this creates more inflammation and hormone problems. And then we are told that copper is toxic and that we need to get rid of it when in reality, it’s just not in the most available form. There’s a lot more to the copper and iron picture than the mainstream health community presents, and we can’t wait to share more with you in this episode.

We are continuing our minerals series and expanding on one particular part of the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)--metabolic type. Our metabolic type gives us insight into nervous system balance and the stage of stress our bodies are in. This is helpful information to know on a healing journey to better understand what nutrients you need more of and what stress management activities may be best for you.
In this episode, we discuss where metabolic typing came from, the difference between a fast and slow metabolic type, and what the different subtypes are.

When it comes to nutrition for hormone health we absolutely need to focus on eating enough and balancing our meals, but one often overlooked area of nutrition is mineral content. In this episode, we are going to give you a crash course in minerals and explain the benefits of hair testing and how it differs from blood work and hormone testing.
Our minerals are like spark plugs--they kick off essential reactions in the body and get things moving. One example of this is an essential mineral that we will talk more about--copper. The body uses copper and oxygen to make ATP, which is our main energy source. The cells in our body require minerals to make energy and hormones, which is why we focus so much on them in our practice. We hope you enjoy nerding out with us!

In this episode, we dive a little deeper into the nuances of good nutrition—and more specifically, the most common nutrition myths being perpetuated by the wellness industry. It seems as though there is an increasing number of foods being demonized by health coaches and doctors alike as of late, which makes us wonder what the heck we are supposed to be eating. Well, what we have to say about a few of those “problematic” foods might just surprise and excite you.
Five Foods Covered:

In this episode, we expand on metabolism and dive into the specifics of what your metabolism needs to properly function and support every other system in the body. But before we dive in, we have a challenge for you. We’re going to ask you to let go of everything you’ve learned in the past about how to eat—including how much you should eat, what foods you should (or should not) eat, and when you should eat. Throw out all of your rules on nutrition and listen to this episode (and remaining episodes) with a fresh perspective on nutrition and lifestyle.
It’s time to rewire your brain and rethink what it looks like to nourish your body. Because, chances are, it’s not what you think.

Are You Menstrual? The first step we take with the women we work with to improve their hormones and overall health is unlearning. So many of us have been dieting from a young age and constantly hopping from one restrictive diet to the next. Leaving our bodies in a constant state of stress and depleting essential minerals that allow us to thrive. This leads to a slowing down of our metabolism. Most people hear the word metabolism and think of weight loss, but it’s actually so much more than that.
Our metabolism is the basic process our body goes through to convert food to energy. If this process slows down that means we have less energy, which means more hormone problems. In this episode, we walk you through the basics of our metabolism, how stress and dieting impact it, and signs that your metabolism needs support.
