Quantum technical debt is the idea that some devices cannot be upgraded to PQC. Stremlau outlines the challenges of integrating heavier PQC algorithms into resource-constrained chips like the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), highlighting technical hurdles such as increased computational intensity, memory bloat, and heightened vulnerability to side-channel and denial-of-service attacks. To counter these quantum threats while maintaining historical stability, the TCG has released the TPM 2.0 library version 1.85 paired with the platform specification 107. This combination leverages built-in crypto-agility to implement mature algorithms like ML-KEM and ML-DSA, while still supporting hybrid classical-quantum models to ensure a smoother migration path for enterprises.

However, Stremlau issues a stark warning regarding the industry's timeline and the reality of quantum technical debt, revealing that achieving full PQC readiness will require a complete hardware replacement rather than simple in-field firmware updates. Government entities are aggressively mandating PQC compliance for procurement by 2027. But the enterprise sector, particularly critical infrastructure and server environments, faces an incredibly long transition cycle due to a traditional preference for operational stability over rapid upgrades. While a PQC-ready TPM is a foundational piece of the puzzle that secures firmware signing, boot processes and platform attestation, it is not a silver bullet. True quantum resilience requires a defense-in-depth strategy where the entire software and data ecosystem, including AI workloads, edge networks and data pipelines, is systematically upgraded alongside the hardware foundation.

A one-shot signature is a new quantum computing tool that lets people verify information publicly using a quantum signing key that destroys itself after use. For the first time, Shor’s Algorithm is running on logical qubits! The team at Infleqtion used their Sqale neutral atom processor to accomplish the feat. While the setup only uses six logical qubits, and we’re still in the range of factoring 15 or 21, this is both a proof of concept and a proof of the need for post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Quantum computing will never be the same again. Join host Konstantinos Karagiannis for a special onsite interview at Microsoft Azure Quantum labs, where he was invited to see the launch of Majorana 1, the world’s first quantum processor powered by topological qubits. On the day this episode is posted, Nature will release a paper validating how Microsoft was able to create a topoconductor, or new material stack of indium arsenide and aluminum, built literally one atom at a time, to bring quantum particles called Majoranas into usable form. The resulting topological qubits have a unique shape called a tetron and can be accurately measured with lower errors than other modalities. Starting with a 4x2 grid of qubits, this same tiny device will hold 1 million qubits in a few years because of its unique system of wiring and measurement. This interview with Chetan Nayak from Microsoft happened a few feet away from a working Majorana 1 system.

Microsoft Azure Quantum has provided access to quantum computers in the cloud for about four years. A lot has changed in that time, including the generative AI revolution. It’s now possible to create quantum circuits with the help of Copilot and users can work on advanced scientific problems in Azure Quantum Elements by combining quantum computing, high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and AI. Microsoft is also making advances in logical qubits in partnership with Quantinuum as well as with their own topological qubits. Error correction typically involves a lot of physical qubits and using them to create one logical qubit. Ratios vary by modality and approach, so getting a single fault-tolerant qubit may take seven to a thousand physical ones. Classical computing cannot simulate more than about 50 qubits. What does it mean that we now have a quantum computer with, gasp, 100 qubits?
