The way it works is that a teacher/host picks a question set and a unique game mode. Then, Blooket generates a code that players can use to join the game on their own devices. After the game starts, players will answer questions to help them win. That's where the fun starts, because Blooket offers a variety of games to keep students engaged and excited.

In this episode, Dennis and Mark deconstruct the work of Johnmarshall Reeves focusing on how we can build autonomy supporting strategies for our students. Reeves' research point out that adopting an autonomy supporting style helps to build agentic learners. Agentic Learners can be framed as students who have learned how to learn and have developed appropriate habits of mind (e.g., Growth mindset) that support active engagement and autonomy in their learning relations and strategies. Why is this important? Well, Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier & Ryan (1991) reported that: Students in classrooms with autonomy-supportive teachers displayed more intrinsic motivation, perceived competence, and self-esteem than did students in classrooms with controlling teachers.
In Part 2, Mark shares the tool Frame. Frame uses VR technology to create online spaces that feel more three-dimensional, allowing participants to move through virtual spaces as if they are physically in a room together. In the world of Frame, a host can create an environment like an office, a lounge, or even an island, and populate that environment with artwork, documents, videos, or any other kind of materials needed for a lesson or other experience. Participants move around the space as avatars and can use voice or text chat to interact.

If you are like every teacher out there wondering what content to cover in an already very tight time-table, then this episode is for you. Dennis and Mark explore the 40-40-40 rule where it begets the question - "Of all of the academic standards, you are tasked with ‘covering’, what’s important that students understand for the next 40 days, what’s important that they understand for the next 40 months, and what’s important that they understand for the next 40 years?"
In some ways, it can be reduced to a depth vs breadth argument. Coverage versus mastery. UbD refers to it as the difference between “nice to know,” “important content,” and “enduring understandings.” Dennis and Mark attempt to shed more light on the 40-40-40 rule and discuss how you can exploit it for your own classroom

Coming across a paper by Richard Felder, a prominent educator who talked about the possibility that Learning Styles may not really be invalid. Dennis and Mark attempt to dissect Felder's argument and then look at how we can leverage the idea and use evidence-based principles to resolve this argument (Hint: We don't really resolve it...).

And after a week's break, we are back! Let's talk a but about why our students are so bad at remembering things. In previous episodes we talk about cognitive load. This week, we look at another aspect - Usefulness and Importance. I always thought that students who cannot remember concepts is simply because they were bored and not motivated. What if it is a matter of usefulness and importance? As in, their brains don't mind the information you are teaching them as useful and more importantly, less important. Hence the brain then gets rid of the "less" important information. What then can we do? Listen as we try and address the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve that states people tend to forget up to 50% of new things they tend to learn immediately after they have learnt it. In Part 2, Mark shares the app Classpoint. Plugged into Microsoft PowerPoint, ClassPoint is a powerful interactive classroom quiz tool that helps you build strong live engagement with students and improve their learning outcomes. And you can download it for free but there are of course limitations. In my opinion, since it is integrated into PPT, it is seamless and the learning curve is virtually zero and it is probably easier to use than Socrative. That's my opinion. And if you are a Singapore based educator, you can use your SkillsFuture credit and attend a course that will give you a FULL Professional license for a year. A great deal if you ask me.

We all have beliefs about teaching and some of these beliefs shape the way that we teach. In this episode, we look at some of these myths ranging from learning styles to multi-tasking for students. Ask any teacher and is more than likely that they will have one particular learning model or theory that they subscribe to. I remember attending a conference and a teacher proudly claimed that she was a constructivist. In this episode, Dennis and Mark attempt to shed some light on evergreen learning theories such as constructivism, cognitivism, Behaviorism and Social Learning. We then look at the rising importance of using Science of Learning concepts and attempt to make sense of this theoretical base and how it can be used in teaching and learning.

Singapore politics is usually described as predictable and boring. However in recent weeks, an MP generated some controversy when he suggested that local degrees in Singapore have a "time-stamp" of 5 years. You can of course imagine the outrage. He has since clarified his comments that he wanted people to think about the importance of Life-Long learning. In this episode, Dennis and Mark strip away the political nuances and try and unpack this idea of life-long learning and what it means to engage on life-long learning.

She has presented numerous papers and posters at state, national and international levels, as well as, invited as a resource person for delivering guest lectures on Creative Teaching in Pharmacology/Pharmacy and Medical education, Effective learning strategies in students, Self- directed learning, pertinent Pharmacology Topics like Antibiotic Stewardship Program, Medication Errors, Prescription Errors, Drug Alert Modules, Pharmacovigilance, Thalidomide Tragedy, Active Teaching and Learning modules in Pharmacology, etc. She has conducted more than 15 workshops at schools and colleges (at the state & national level) on effective learning strategies for students as well as on Creative teaching-learning strategies for faculty. She has published more than 50 papers on topics pertaining to medical education, creative methods of teaching and Pharmacology, to date. Dr. Anuradha Joshi has been conferred the title of Creative Pedagogy Trainer by the President of the International Academy of Genius, California, USA (2019). Dr. Anuradha Joshi has been in the arena of teaching for 25 years now. She is someone who believes that every life is rich if only one notices the innocuous intricacies that surround it. In Part 2, Mark shares his tool of the week and the tool is Quandary! Quandary is an application for creating Web-based Action Mazes. An Action Maze is a kind of interactive case-study; the user is presented with a situation, and a number of choices as to a course of action to deal with it. On choosing one of the options, the resulting situation is then presented, again with a set of options. Working through this branching tree is like negotiating a maze, hence the name Action Maze.
Action mazes can be used for many purposes, including problem-solving, diagnosis, procedural training, and surveys/questionnaires.

What exactly is a global mindset? How do you know if someone has one? More importantly, can you teach a student to have a global mindset? In this episode, Mark and Dennis are joined by Stewart Mills (yes, he does sound like James Bond) as they unpack the idea of what it takes to have a global mindset and what teachers can do to help their students have one.
Stewart Mills has worked in the Caribbean, Africa , South and North America managing both multilateral and bilateral development programmes. He lived and worked in fifteen countries gaining wide experience in strategy and policy formation in many cultural contexts. Stewart’s postings and secondments have included; working on the Executive Boards of the World Bank, African Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in Washington. Stewart also worked as a member of the UK negotiating team for the creation of the Global Environmental Facility and also worked with IADB colleagues on the Climate Investment Fund. Stewart worked for the European Commission in Brussels for 6 years as the G8 and G20 Coordinator for Development Issues. Working with the European Commission included providing policy advice on the creation of the €50 Billion EU External Investment Plan.
