Christ John Otto is the founder of Belonging House, an international fellowship of artists and creative people. Beth Charashim, the House of Artisans, is our Sunday online worshipping congregation. Five easy steps on how to walk on water — if only. Right after the miracle of feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends his disciples into a storm he ordained himself. In this teaching on Matthew 14:22-33, Christ John Otto walks through Peter's cry to get out of the boat, why water in Scripture always signals death and chaos, and why the fourth watch of the night — the darkest hour before dawn — is when so many of the Bible's turning points happen. For those of us called into the realm of art and creativity, where the chaos isn't hidden anymore, there's no strategy for walking on water. It's the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the Gospel is the feeding of the five thousand — the one miracle told nearly word-for-word in all four Gospels, always in the same place: after John the Baptist's death, before Jesus walks on water. That's the turning point where Jesus's identity as Messiah intensifies, right as he's grieving the loss of his forerunner.
Christ John Otto walks through Matthew's telling — the crowds that won't leave Jesus alone in his grief, the disciples who want to send the hungry away, and the command that changes everything: "You give them something to eat." Two fish, five loaves, five thousand people, no money. Impossible by design, because Jesus never calls anyone to independence — only to a dependence so total it forces trust.
From there, a personal thread: the 2006 call to build an "army of artists" with no fundraising or networking, and an update from eight weeks of rest — going Google-free, starting a daily Eucharist, and prayer-walking New York City.

In 2014, Zuzana Komendova prayed a simple prayer: Lord, give me a good teacher who will teach me everything. She was finishing a degree in jewellery and silversmithing in Slovakia, wounded by four years under an abusive professor, and hungry for someone she could actually learn from. She had no idea the answer would take ten years, arrive through a weekly email, and have nothing to do with metalworking.
In this talk from Belonging House's Authentic Voices series, Zuzana — a Slovak artist now living in the UK, producing multimedia resources for Catholic schools — traces the gradual, drop-by-drop transformation that has reshaped her identity over a decade. Her father died suddenly in 2015, nearly taking her faith with him. Her old grid was built on pride, self-pity, and a victim identity so deep she couldn't tell the difference between God's voice and her own. She writes a Normal Manifesto now.
She shares what changed: learning to pray with authority rather than from fear, recording daily Gospel voiceovers in Slovak for 250 days and counting, and understanding what it means to be a vessel — not to make chalices and patens with her own hands as she once dreamed, but to become one herself, carrying the most precious content there has ever been.

A stranger leaned against the wall next to Joseph Frost, said "you should think more about writing," and walked away. Joseph had been waiting to tear down sound equipment. He wasn't looking for a word from God.

Joseph traces his path from a conservative Quaker church through multiple conversions, into graduate school theater, and eventually to playing Hamlet in an 800-seat theater the same week his second child was born. It was Hamlet that gave him the framework: his job as the lead wasn't to shine — it was to help every other character have their one great moment. Servant artistry. From there he draws the line between theater-as-body-of-Christ, the seventh day of creation reframed as show day, and how daily prayer at Belonging House has become an unexpected engine for his writing — with more than 400 short plays to show for it.

Twenty years ago today, a man with $100,000 in debt, a life-threatening diagnosis, and no kingdom worldview sat down at a piano in his living room — and an angel showed up.
This is the founding story of Belonging House International.
In this landmark 20th anniversary message, Christ John Otto shares — for the first time in years, by his own account — the full account of the vision that launched this ministry: the gold smoke that filled his living room, the four pillars with golden bowls of incense, the multitudes in white robes holding palm branches and dancing in concentric circles, the four living creatures covered in eyes, the emerald disc hovering above a throne, and the being made of living fire who picked him up and set him among the dancers.
And what the angel said.
"God is calling you to raise up an army of artists who will build Jesus a throne on the earth — who will prepare a way for the coming of the Lord. Throw away your Rolodex. You are not to ask anyone for money. Only tell the story."
This is where every phrase Christ uses came from: - "Fear not, God can be trusted" — came from an angel - "Listen to the Lord and do what he tells you" — came from a priest - "Raise up an army of artists to build Jesus a throne on the earth" — heard directly
But the road from that vision to this anniversary was not neat or clean. Christ shares the whole unvarnished journey:

Arlene Brown just wanted to lurk.

Val Davidson grew up in a forward-thinking Baptist church in Edinburgh, prayed over by her parents, shaped by community, and carrying a prophetic gift she didn't quite have language for. What if the deepest spiritual resistance comes not from evil, but from our own ability? I have crafted a prayer for the renunciation of the religious spirit.
Father,
I believe that Jesus Christ is the only Son of God,
and that he took on the flesh of the blessed Virgin Mary.
By his death and resurrection,
I have been given the power
to become a child of God.
And I can only be a child
by the power of the Holy Spirit in me.
I renounce the lie
that I have to do things
to remain a child of God.
I renounce the lie
that I have to do things
to make you come to me.
And I renounce the lie
that my works or activities,
my knowledge or expertise
will cause you to do things.
I renounce the lie that
I have to do things to
shift the spiritual atmosphere,
or have power over people, places, or things.
Only you have this power,
and I submit to your work in my life.
I renounce the lie
that my activities,
my church membership,
my political party,
or my theology
make me a better person
than others.
I know that this attitude
puts me under the law of sin and death
and blocks the flow of the Holy Spirit.
Forgive me for coming into agreement with
the prevailing religious culture in the United States.
I am guilty of the worst of all sins,
Pride and all the works that flow from it.
I acknowledge that the belief
in my own activity
opens me up to a curse,
and that I am bewitched.
I have allowed witchcraft to operate in my life.
Forgive me for any way I have touched your glory.
Father forgive me,
have mercy on me a sinner.
I am powerless and helpless
to be a Christian in my own strength,
and all my "righteousness" is a filthy rag.
I am no different than the woman caught in adultery,
and I ask you to forgive me
that I may go and sin no more.
Now I renounce the religious spirit,
and any agreements I have made with
pride, immorality, or witchcraft.
They have to leave me now
and go to Jesus.
Open my eyes to see every way I have come to agree
with this spiritual power
and help me walk differently in the future.
Help me walk softly before you.
I thank you Lord,
that Jesus Christ became a curse for me on the cross
so that I can enter into the blessing of Abraham.
I break the religious curse operating in my life
and ask you to release the blessing over me.
I now break the power of witchcraft
and close the open door witchcraft has in my life.
Thank you Lord
that it is for freedom that Christ has set me free.
Jesus,
you promised that you would not leave me an orphan.
I ask you now
to release the Holy Spirit
in me
and unblock the flow of life and healing
so that I can walk in love
and know the presence of the Father in me.
Amen.

Jesus Christ is the good shepherd, the door for the sheep. His sheep here is his voice, and whenever he speaks he makes something new. The Shepherd is always creating.

we look at the Wedding at Cana.
This is the first recorded miracle in the Gospel of John
and John states that this was the first miracle of Jesus.
John says
that through this miracle
Jesus manifested his glory
and this disciples believed in him.
That's a big thing to say about
wine at a party.

This word "call"
in Greek,
Kaleo,
appears 148 times in the New Testament.
It is the greek word used for the Hebrew word
"cara."
This word first appears at the beginning of Genesis
when God speaks and he calls the light day
and the dark night.
In the Bible,
and especially in the Gospels,
the word "call" has an intrinsic meaning.
The call defines a person
and calls them out of one reality
and into another.
So Jesus calls fishermen,
and in the call itself
is the power for those men
to leave their nets,
leave their family legacy,
leave their place in society,
and follow Jesus.
And in the call
is another reality.
The call defines you.
So Jesus calls them and says,
from now on
you will be fishers of men.
Notice what Jesus does here.
He does not say
You were once fishermen,
and now I am going to make you
Christian accountants.
No.
The call of God
transforms what they are,
their natural gifts and abilities,
into something much higher.

God is always calling us out of our illusions and into Kingdom reality.
The religious worldly mind
calls us backward
into the realm of the past.
And that realm of the past will then cause us to live in unreality.
God is present future.
He is always talking about now
and calling us into future.
This is why,
when we confess our sins
he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and then we move into his reality.
This is why you feel free.
You are back in sync with God.
Sadly,
many people conjure up and relive the past over and over again
and they are living and being defined by things
that are gone.
This is the illusion that God has not forgiven.
The religious mind thinks
God forgives us
but we still have to do something to make it happen.
This is not reality.
In today's gospel,
Jesus comes to John
and John declares that Jesus is the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
And then John says this,
my ministry is for a season.
My ministry and my baptism is only here
to point the way to someone else,
and this one is here.
And then John gives us the point.
The one coming after me
will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
You will not be baptized in water,
but in the Holy Spirit.

Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord
and I want to talk about a few BIG ideas
that will lay out the next season of teaching.
In John chapter three
one of the leaders of the sanhedrin,
Nicodemus
comes to Jesus secretly
at night.
And Nicodemus makes an observation to Jesus,
no one could do the signs that you do
unless God is with him.
And the Jesus replies,
No one can enter the Kingdom of heaven
unless he is born again.
And then Jesus explains
that unless you are born
by water and the Holy Spirit
you are not in the Kingdom.
Flesh gives birth to flesh
and spirit gives birth to spirit.
The Kingdom of God
is not a kingdom of talk,
but a kingdom of power.

not as conqueror or warrior.
God is coming to earth
in peace with love, delight, and favor.
Heaven is invading earth
and it is an invasion of favor.
Christmas is the miracle.

we see so much happen in people's lives.
When we declare scriptural truth,
even if that truth is not yet reality for us,
we begin to see movement
from our broken reality
into God's reality.
The incarnation is everything.
Jesus came into a broken world
and said
I am salvation
I am God with you.
I am close
and I can bring the life and love of God
into your broken reality
and bring salvation.
That word salvation
means healing, wholeness, shalom,
transformation and blessing.
And so we declare salvation over situations.

What do you do when the fulfilment comes and it is not what you expected? There is a back side to the forerunner calling and we need to talk about it.
God is fulfilling promises right now in our community, and it is important to understand a core piece of God's fulfillment. Most people miss the day of their visitation and the day of the fulfillment because they are expecting one thing and God does another. God fulfills the word and the promise but it does not look like what we expected. And when this happens people either get disappointed or offended.

The prophetic word is the end from the beginning. If God gives you a word, He is telling you how things are going to work out. It is designed to give you prophetic hope. Hope keeps you going.
A lot of people live in what is or what was.
They live in what their eyes tell them about now, or the illusion of their experience in the past. And out of this, they get trapped in a poverty mindset with no possibilities or options.
The Lord lives in what is and what will be.

I was asked a few days ago about the glory and how we carry the glory. And this related to something Bob Jones said before he died, that the glory of God was going to return to the church, and that the glory would accompany the great "end time" billion soul harvest, this harvest the described as the "House.
Related to this is the opposition those who are called to carry the glory would face. This opposition is described in Revelation as the "Harlot."

Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the son of man has no where to lay his head.

If any man would come after me, let him take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Today we are going to end this talk with a few prayers.
First,
I want to break off of you
any ways people have made false declarations over you.
Some of you have aligned your hearts with these lies
and so we may have to renounce them as well.
There are many artists who listen to my teaching
who have been cursed by their churches.
So we are going to break that off.
There are many of you
who feel like God has called you to do radical things
but there is resistance,
both inward and outward,
to keep you "normal"
and to stop you from walking in obedience.
We are going to break that off and we are going to pray for you.
Some of you may need to turn from this
and I am going to ask you to indicate to everyone here
your desire to change direction and align with Jesus.
And then we are going to go after
all the false religious teaching that has kept some of you bound
in poverty, lack, sickness,
and death.

This day we remember the Body and Blood.
The Body was offered,
it was blessed and dedicated,
it was broken,
and it was give to us.
As a young person in the Episcopal church
I was taught a deceptively simple rhyme
crafted by Queen Elizabeth I:
Twas God the Word that spake it.
He took the Bread and brake it.
And what the word did make it,
That I believe, and take it.
God the Word made flesh
took bread,
gave thanks and declared over it a new reality,
and in the breaking of that bread,
the reality was released to us,
and we can receive it.

The God of the Bible
is the Most Relational Being in the Universe.
Bishop Robert Barron,
once talked about the uniqueness of the Christian God.
God is Love.
And then he paraphrased St. Augustine's Treatise on the Holy Trinity.
The Father is the Lover.
The Son is the Beloved.
And the Holy Spirit is the bond of Love between them.
The Father is the Lover.
The Son is the Beloved.
And the Holy Spirit is the bond of Love between them.
And Jesus says this in this Gospel.
Everything I have is from the Father.
The Father gives it to me.
And the Holy Spirit is going to give it to you.
And St. Athanasius said that out of this relationship
between the members of the Godhead,
there is creativity.
It is like a nuclear reaction.
The interaction
between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
is by nature
a creative force.

If you aren't paying attention,
Pentecost
seems to be the most random event in history.
A group of people
praying in a room in Jerusalem
suddenly
see fire on their heads
and they begin to speak in various languages.
And many people and churches
do not understand why Pentecost is important
and they call it the birthday of the church.
And for people who believe that the Holy Spirit
withdrew a generation later,
they try to downplay this event
and look at it as an anomaly.
This is why we read all these lessons each year
to show that Pentecost
is part of a continuum in Scripture,
and also
a great restoration
of God's original plan.
Pentecost is the fulfillment of everything
the Messiah said he would do.
The Holy Spirit is the author of scripture,
and the central character throughout.
This is one of the interesting aspects of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit always directs the attention to someone else.
You can miss the Holy Spirit in the Bible
if you are not looking.
The Bible begins with the Holy Spirit
hovering over the waters
and out of this chaos comes order.
The Holy Spirit always brings order out of chaos.

Simon Sinek once said that great leaders
lead from their "why."
I once worked for an art company
that gave the staff random directions
but never told us what we were doing
or why we were doing it.
And I recall the directions were always in bits,
one task at a time.
It was very frustrating,
and the end goal always suffered
because the staff did not know why they were doing it.
Eventually I quit.
A lot of people think God is like this.
That everything is on a need to know basis,
and that we are given directions to obey.
And if you miss it,
well it sucks to be you.
Back to being an unhappy Christian trying to make
the mean old man in the sky happy.
This is not Christianity.
God is in relationship with you,
and he wants you to know why.

The Father Speaks.
The Son does,
the Holy Spirit manifests.
And so the Father
calls a new creation.
He sends his Son.
And what does the Son do?
The son only does what He sees the Father doing.
The Father initiates,
and the Son administrates.
The Son carries out the word of the Father.
And so the Son
becomes sin for us.
The son empties himself and becomes a servant.
The Son becomes the word made flesh.
The son conquers death
and rises from the dead.
But these things are limited by the physical reality
that Jesus is one person.
The Father has spoken,
the Son has done his work,
but the Holy Spirit must bring it into manifestation.
You cannot know God,
or the Word
without the Holy Spirit.
You cannot love Jesus or keep his words without the Holy Spirit.

You are not a sinner.
Sin is not what defines you.
Sin is nothing more
than static on your new identity,
because Holies do not live in sin.
And as you hear the Shepherds voice,
and you present your body to the Shepherd,
you are more and more transformed
into the real you.
Jesus tells you who you are.
Jesus reminds you of his love.
Jesus encourages you to become more and more
your true identity in Christ.
And everything that sticks to you,
with the static cling of sin,
will fall away.

Revelation
This Kingdom
is not one of outward appearances,
but a kingdom of internal realities.
As Jesus said,
his body was the temple,
and it would be destroyed,
and on the third day
it would be raised up.
On the cross
the veil of his temple was torn,
his heart was pierced,
and out of that temple of his body
flowed blood and water.
That water,
was the Holy Spirit.
To be a Christian
is to be a little Christ,
a temple of the Holy Spirit.

Today we have one of the gospel readings
that has captured the imaginations of millions of people.
This wild story,
where a woman is in the act of adultery,
and dragged into the temple precincts,
and they are about to stone her.
And of course,
this episode
is a test
to see what Jesus will do.
They are trying to provoke him
so that they have a pretext to claim
he is a false prophet,
so that they can stone him
along with the woman.
Lots of people have talked about the obvious facts.
No one commits adultery alone.
Where is the other party?
Was he the married one?
And why were all these scribes and pharisees
in the right place at the right time?
And of course,
the real thing,
the thing that everyone is confused about.

and what did the writing say?

We have to be reminded continually
that Jesus Christ did not come to start a religion
but rather
he came to establish a Kingdom.
Our religious grids sometimes keep us from the Kingdom.
At the same time,
a lot of people think that the Body of Christ
is a jelly-fish.
All that matters is my relationship with Jesus
and everything else is up for grabs.
Have you noticed that jellyfish
never build anything?
The Kingdom
as it says in Revelation
is taking the world
from a wild garden
to a city.
And cities
and kingdoms
have order.
We see this in Leviticus.
There is a very clear order about God's plan for his people.
They were first given holidays,
then an order for the pattern of worship,
and then rules for life.

Legend tells us that Joseph of Arimathea
a tin merchant,
came to Glastonbury,
and put his staff in the ground
and it sprouted.
This tree blooms twice a year
in the spring
and on Christmas.
And this tree, the Glastonbury Thorn,
is the root of Christianity in Britain.
And by the way,
this tree,
genetically linked to the eastern mediterranean,
survives through cuttings
and still blooms at Christmas.
In the undercroft of the York Minster
is a tile from the first century,
and that tile is inscribed with the monogram of Christ,
the Chi-Rho.
So we have two bits of evidence
that Christianity has been in Britain for two-thousand years.
And it is the tree from which Belonging House springs.

From the beginning,
I have tried to model a basic ethic of hospitality,
and model the "Golden Rule."
Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
Put other people first.
Oddly,
some of you have seen this in action,
when we have had a few bad apples in our own mix.
Folks have interpreted my kindness to the ungrateful
as weakness,
and sometimes folks try to take advantage of me.
These situations do not change reality.
In the Kingdom
reality is
Take up your cross and follow Jesus
to his death, and your death.
You become a disciple when you do this.
And when you choose to be a disciple,
you begin to become a master copy of the Icon of the Father,
Jesus Christ.
And we are promised,
that if we share in his suffering
we will share in his glory.

It's hard to believe, but Christmas was forty days ago.
This year, the end of the Christmas cycle, The Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple falls on a Sunday.
We have been talking about how the Kingdom of God is a symbolic Kingdom, and how this relates to the sacramental principle, and the means of grace:
God uses physical things and actions to communicate his Presence, Person, and Power.
Today we are going to look at the presentation of Jesus
and in order to discover how to encounter the Holy Spirit when God is moving.
People miss what God is doing,
because they are looking at the wrong things.

When we talk about the means of grace,
after the sacraments
is the word of God.
And the reading and proclamation of the word
is a sacrament.
It is an act that releases the power and grace of God.
And so this week,
we are given two readings where we actually see this happen,
under the reforms of Ezra and Nehemiah
and Jesus in the Synagogue.
This week I want to look at this passage in Luke from a slightly different angle,
and talk about two things:
the ancient pathway that never gets old;
the way the church has encouraged us to read scripture.
And the slippery slope,
liberal theology
and the authority of scripture.

It is a bit shocking
that God would use the most common of all elements
to be the sign of birth into the Kingdom.
And throughout scripture
water will be linked to the Holy Spirit.
Water is the sign of creation,
rebirth of the world,
the river of life from the Temple,
rivers of living water out of our bellies,
washing,
cleansing,
and blessing.
And yes,
Paul says water is a symbol of death and resurrection,
but that reference is an outlier.
Water is more often about life
and birth.
Jesus is the living water.
Water is the most powerful solvent on earth.
All things can dissolve in water.
Water can become steam and drive engines.
Water can freeze and become ice.
Water can move mountains
through erosion.
Up here in New England we have seen whole rock formations
collapse because ice got in,
expanded and split the rock.
Water can evaporate and become clouds.
Water can come down as snow.
Water is the most powerful force on earth
Everything can be changed by water,
but nothing changes water.
Just like the Holy Spirit.

The Kingdom of God is a symbolic kingdom.
Symbols are God’s primary language.
This is why
if you focus too much on the Bible as a written word
you miss so much.
And this is why
Christianity has produced so much visual art,
and why this art is full of language and messages
that we can read.

Matthew 2:1-10
This isn't about stars and kings
and Christmas gifts.
This is about the Kingdom of God,
and
Matthew is showing us
that outsiders,
pagans,
who are paying attention,
recognize that the Kingdom of God
is being manifested on earth,
and those who are supposed to know
miss it.
He is pointing out what Jesus would say later on:
beware the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod.
Politics is not the Kingdom,
and neither is religion.
The Kingdom is about food.
It is about being fed by the good Shepherd,
and he is bringing bread for the life of the world.
He is bread
for the life of the world.

Turn in your Bible to Luke 2:15-21.
The Christmas readings often stop at verse 20.
And because this story is in Christmas specials
sandwiched between Rudolph and ads for Coca-Cola,
we think that this story,
the one with shepherds and angels
is fantastical.
These angels are for many of us,
just like Santa's elves at the North Pole.
Even "evangelicals" have been so influenced
by liberal theology
that they have accepted that
this is in the mythical category.
Classical,
Catholic and Orthodox
Christianity
teaches us that these angels are not mythical
and that at any moment you might have an encounter
with an angel.
Hebrews reminds us to welcome the stranger,
because you might be meet an "angel unawares."

The Messiah is coming,
and you are not ready.
Get ready.
We are back to the central theme of scripture:
God is a Father looking for bride for his son.
The bride is faithless,
so the son lays down his life to redeem her,
and then we all sit down at the Father's table
forever.

God is saying today,
take the lid off.
There are no limitations.
With God all things are possible.
There is something in you
that only you can do.
God has given you unique abilities,
callings,
giftings,
and experiences.
There will never be another you.
It's okay to celebrate that and embrace that.
And when you do,
when you discover that embrace,
you can experience and walk in
the flow of God for your life.

Jeremiah is being given a promise:
the house of David,
which seems to be at a very low point,
is going to produce a Branch.
Isaiah tells us a
branch will come from the stump of Jesse.
And Zechariah also gives us this image
of a righteous branch.
In the ancient world,
and especially among royalty,
the idea of a branch
always refers to a royal line.
This is the Kingly line.
This is the Messianic promise
God made to David in II Samuel 7:
You will not build me a house,
but I will build you a house,
and someone will sit on your throne
forever.
We are looking back,
and we are looking forward.
Jeremiah
in a hopeless situation
is promised that a Branch will come forth,
and by this branch,
We will know the LORD is our righteousness.

If you have spent any time among
conservative types of churches,
this topic can become a real turnoff,
because there is a cottage industry
around the rapture
and end-times prophecy.
And honestly,
it seems like the second coming takes
a back seat to the tribulation,
and the whole thing is completely
disconnected from reality.
Let's go back to our main thesis:
Jesus Christ did not come to start a religion,
he came to establish a Kingdom.
The whole Bible
from beginning to end
is about this Kingdom.
It is not about religion.
And when you try to understand the second coming
from a religious grid,
things get weird.
And it is really important for artists and creative people.
Because if you try to fit your life
into the religious grid,
you produce bad art.
If you are an artist for the Kingdom
there is a lot of freedom.

that is going to result in resistance,

You don't climb your way up in the Kingdom. That's the world's thinking. The Kingdom is built on the foundation of a Lamb who was slain. The law of the universe is the law of death and resurrection. I once found the best description of discipleship, in all places, on Wikipedia. A disciple in the ancient world was a person who followed a master teacher and tried in every way to become like them, in dress, in speech, and in learning. As I put it a few years ago, A disciple is a master copy of the original. Jesus is the Icon of the Father, and a disciple is a copy of the Icon. A disciple is a walking work of conceptual art. A disciple is the ultimate method actor, playing the role of Jesus for all the world to see: responding like Jesus, motivated by the Father, just like Jesus. And as Jesus says in many places, and in this gospel lesson from Mark 8, if you want to be my disciple, you must take up your cross and follow me. This chapter is the heart of discipleship. 1. You must confess that Jesus is the Christ. 2. You must think like God, not humanity. 3. You must take up your cross, deny yourself and follow Jesus. In the Kingdom, everything is always personal. This is why a lot of theology is a mirage. When you bring it back to Jesus, and the Incarnation, and the fact that the Five-fold ministry is about the Incarnation, and that artistic apostles and prophets are Incarnations of Jesus, it is all very clear. The gift of prophecy is going to come from the Comforter, Advocate, and Giver of life. The New Covenant is about life. New Covenant Prophecy is a gift of life, not judgement and death. And Paul says this in I Corinthians 14. Prophecy first is for upbuilding, encouragement, and consolation. Paul says that the five-fold gifts are for the Body. And what is the Body? It is the physical presence of the spiritual reality of Jesus in the earth. It is not a group of people who have embraced some doctrine, it is the embodiment of Jesus in the earth. You and everyone else are supposed to be the body of Jesus on earth. So when you are baptized and are filled with the Holy Spirit,
Jesus,
out of his all-powerful sovereignty over all things
imparts his spirit into you
and you are given new DNA.
Jesus makes some people
Apostles,
Prophets,
Evangelists,
Pastors,
and Teachers.
These types of people
are the gift,
and their role in the body
is to perform functions.
And the purpose of these functions
is to make the whole body stronger
and help the body mature
so that we can all attain the full stature
of the mature Jesus.
When God calls you,
there is a creative power in the call
that keeps you going.
There is the same power in a call from God
that raised Jesus from the dead,
that calmed the storm,
and that created the galaxies.
And sometimes,
when you have a call from God,
you are asked to make choices:
Will you leave mother and father,
houses and lands
and brothers and sisters for my sake and the sake of the gospel?
And Jesus tells us,
we will receive a hundred fold in this life,
and much, much more in the life to come.
The call of Christ makes everything possible.
God is looking for people who want to be famous in heaven. The Holy Spirit is holy. We can't cast lots, and use the Bible to make a new thing. We can’t create another strategy or an initiative and then ask God to bless it. We have to listen to the Lord and do what he tells us. Nothing more, nothing less. Luke 24:35-48 The way we encounter the physical body of Jesus is through the bread and wine. This is why the Eucharist is central. And when we encounter this physical body, we know him through the power of the Holy Spirit. And then something really interesting happens in this reading. And this happens twice in the twenty-fourth chapter of Luke. It happens in the house in Emmaus, and here in the upper room: He opened up their minds to understand the scriptures.

People love theology,
and we could talk about theology all night,
but nobody cares.
Nobody cares about the theology of the resurrection.
Nobody cares about the substitutionary atonement.
Nobody cares about all the meaning
and layers
in this Passover Vigil.
Because,
at the end of the day,
we are all like Mary
at the tomb.
We weep.
We are alone.
We are disappointed and lost.
And we hear a familiar voice behind us.
“Woman, why are you weeping?”

and says,
See.

Jesus spent his whole life pointing toward this event.
This was what he longed to do, establish a new covenant with us. Give us this bread of the new covenant, where God lives in us by the Holy Spirit and does the work through us so that we can do more than real things in this earth. We are not mentally remembering Jesus, we are reconnecting to the covenant and all it's promises: God is in us, and physically we are taking Jesus into us. And when we take Jesus into us, Jesus in us by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit gives us the power to love. And in that place, we can ask anything in his name and our Father will get the glory.

Throughout history we are reminded that the Messiah didn't get born in a vaccuum. He didn't drop out of heaven in a space ship and say I come in peace. No. He was the Branch from a long family tree. And that tree began with Abraham. He is our father. He is the first root. And this part of his family tree is a tree of faith. His son Isaac was the product of a miraculous conception. And this theme of miraculous births would continue all through the Bible. God uses people and God uses families. And families are living things.

Human beings are not a means to an end.
Every human life is precious in the sight of God. And God said, be fruitful and multiply. This isn't just about having babies. This is about fullness of living, and prospering. It's about being faithful to God, and it's about the beauty of work. It's about seeing that this world is made by God, is a revelation of God, and our job is to restore rebuild, and repair this earth, so that it becomes a reflection of heaven.

When Jesus is called into question, he doesn't choose one of the ten commandments as the first and greatest. Instead, he chooses a phrase from the Shema, found in Deuteronomy 6. Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul, with all your mind, and will all your strength. All the law all the commandments are summed up in the foundational truth, Our God is the most relational being the universe, and you cannot do anything apart from a love relationship with him. If you aren't in love with God then as Paul says in I Corinthians 13: If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing. Often people talk about love in vaguaries, but Jesus makes it clear here. Love is directional and personal. You need to be in love with God first. And then Jesus pulls a verse out of Leviticus 19, from what is known as the Holiness code. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Remember, the theme of Matthew is found in Matthew 5:19 "I came not to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them." Matthew is writing to a Jewish audience, and his version says all the things other writers say, but in a distinctly Jewish way. Matthew is saying what John says in John 13. A new commandment I give you: love one another. Jesus says it several ways in Matthew: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments: Loving God and loving others hangs all the law and the prophets.

We are in a continuing series on getting a Kingdom perspective.
One of the best classes I remember
from college
was a course called "The Impact of Science on Society."
And in that class
I had very rudimentary introduction to quantum physics.
And one of the things I learned
was that some subatomic particles
are changed when they are observed.
And of course
this is very befuddling
and troubling
to physicists,
because they cannot prove something
when it changes every time you look at it.
It is interesting
that one of the principles of the kingdom is this:
whatever you look at grows.
Paul says something like this
in his little letter to Titus:
To the pure,
all things are pure,
but to the corrupt and unbelieving,
nothing is pure. (1:15)
In other words
we are back to the grid.
We call this confirmation bias.
If you make up your mind
to see things a certain way,
then all things will line up with your grid.

Everything in the Bible is about the Kingdom.
If you come upon something that doesn't make sense,
ask yourself how it relates to the Kingdom.
We are in the 10 Days of Awe.
These are the feast of the Lord that have not been fulfilled in Messiah,
these are the feasts about the establishment of the Kingdom.
Have you ever noticed that the second half of the Christian year is empty?
That's because the Jewish fall feasts were not really mentioned by Jesus,
and they were not fulfilled in his first coming.
These feasts all look forward
to his second coming.
We have left the lectionary for the next three Sundays.
And when I asked the Lord about what readings to use this week,
he asked me a question.
Always pay attention to when the Lord asks you a question.
"Can you mate a sheep with a goat?'
That is an interesting question.
The short answer is,
no,
you can't.
It turns out some have tried,
and when you do
the offspring is always still born.
And when I asked the Lord about this,
I was brought back to this passage from Matthew,
where Jesus sits upon his glorious throne.
And he separates the sheep from the goats.
Religious thinking wants everyone to get along
and cooperate.
Let's keep the sheep and the goats at peace.
Jesus,
is a peace maker.
Peace requires a division and a separation.
When you try to keep things that do not belong together,
you are going to have conflict.
And these ten days are a symbol of this separating ourselves
from the world,
and being set aside for God.

In the 1950's A.W. Tozer wrote and preached about
how people used the phrase "accept Jesus."
Tozer said Jesus never asked us to accept him
he called us to turn to him,
leave everything
and become a disciple.
Like the phrase "accept Jesus"
there is another completely unbiblical thing people say:
"I repent of blah blah blah."
This phrase does nothing in the spiritual realm.
The Bible says that if you want your sins to go away,
you humble yourself,
confess them,
and receive forgiveness.
Then you turn to God,
and be transformed in your thinking.
"I repent of ...."
is neither confession nor forgiveness,
confession and forgiveness are a transaction.
Saying "I repent" is not a change and turning to God.
Just like saying "I cook" is not feeding your family.
And the change and turning has to happen
first in your thinking,
and then in the fruit of your life.
The word that is translated "repentance"
the word Jesus used here at the beginning of his ministry
is metanoia.
Meta means to change or transform,
and moia means the mind.
But not just thinking.
The Mind in this sense is your soul,
your inner being,
your heart.
So Jesus said,
change your mindset
your way of thinking
guard your heart
from the world's way
to the Kingdom way
because the Kingdom is at hand.
It is here
it is now
and it is happening whether you like it or not.
The contractions have begun
and the time for the birth is near.
You can't stop it.
And your old way of thinking
is not going to help you when the Kingdom breaks forth.
And when it does
you might miss it.

Believing God is very different. Jesus said he only did what he saw the Father doing. Believing and seeing are one. Faith is the evidence of things hoped for and the assurance of things you do not see. In other words, seeing the unseen. And we who are called to be artists and creative people are called to make what we see visible to other others who do not have the ability to believe. and in making our belief visible, we empower everyone.

Your story makes you who you are. And all stories have high points and low points, moments of tragedy and moments of triumph. The twelfth chapter of the book of Revelation tells us, that we are called to be overcomers. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.
The enemy is terribly afraid of our testimony. No one can take your testimony away. Your testimony is a monument and a memorial to the character of God in your life. And so the enemy always resorts to some kind of censorship, or creates rules to prevent you from telling your story. If the story gets out, it is going to overcome.

I don't say this very often,
but Belonging House is an apostolic ministry.
And our primary mission and ministry
is to raise up an army of artists to build the throne of Jesus in the earth.
In other words,
we are called to train and equip artists
to lay a foundation to expand the Kingdom of God
in the realm of the arts and culture.
Why?
Because where the arts go,
everything else follows.
One of the great problems that the church has
is that it sees the artist and creative person as something other.
so they give artists a pass.
You don't have to become disciples because you are good at media.
You don't have to align with the Kingdom.
And my primary concern is not the church so much as the artist
in the world.
In order to make a difference in the world,
you have to be really centred and grounded in the kingdom.
Too many try to mix the world with Christianity.
Again and again when you do this, you will hate the one and love the other.
This week I want to talk about an undivided heart.
This is all about where your allegiance lies.
When I was praying about today,
the Lord showed me many hearts that were torn down the middle.
One was pulling toward the world, and the other was pulling toward the Lord.
And when you are torn in this way
you cannot move.
And as I looked at this image,
I saw these torn hearts spilling blood
as the life that flowed poured out of the tear.
The Lord is calling us to return to him
and move in one direction.
And like a heart that is torn in two,
you can't live for very long in that condition.
Eventually you will die.
An undivided heart is a pure heart.

In 2008 I was in the house of prayer in Akron, Ohio
and two ladies who were part of our prayer team came to me and said,
We have a word from the Lord for you.
God is moving you to your next assignment.
You are going to go with nothing but a suitcase
and you will not know how you got there.
When you get there
you will be like Daniel
and you will teach the people
a new way to eat.
That word has stayed with me all these years,
because it was not just about Boston.
It was about the times and the places I have lived in.
And it is the time we are living in.
Lots of Christians think that if they pray hard enough
God will give us the next election,
change the heart of the leaders of the nations,
or turn things back to normal.
Others think that if we take back the mountains
or get back into power
then we can reverse what's happening to Western Civilization.
Christendom is over friends.
God's plan for you and for me is not
to reverse what's happening in the world.
Our call is to be like Daniel
who lived in Babylon,
where every idea except the truth
was considered equal.
Scripture tells us that it will be Babylon
that opposes the Kingdom at the end of the age.
God is calling us to overcome in Babylon.
And Daniel refused to eat from the king's table,
and he refused to bow down to the idols they had made,
and he not only survived,
he thrived.
And he taught the people a new way to eat.

We cannot understand the Kingdom using worldly systems
worldly logic,
and worldly paradigms.
Grids.
It is interesting when you read a lot of commentaries,
that most of the people writing them are either not believers
or believe that the work of the Holy Spirit ceased.
And most of it is not helpful.
This is what Paul describes as the "unspiritual man"
who does not receive the gifts of the Spirit
they are folly.
And then Paul says the spiritual man
judges all things because it is in the spirit that things are discerned.
So what Jesus is telling us
lines up with Paul.
Jesus is showing us that the moral code
that is required of us in heaven
is beyond human ability.
Jesus is building up to the crescendo of his sermon:
Come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden
and I will give you rest.
Come to me.
Come to me and I will give you my mind.
Come to me and I will help you give you my emotional stability.
I will help you with your impossible marriage.
I will help you with you rotten brother.
I will help you with contracts and agreements
so that your yes will be yes and your no will be no.
I will help you with your wandering eye.
I will be in you.
And this is only in the Spirit.
And in order to do this,
you need the gifts and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout this season
we are going to come back to one theme:
How do we experience grace?
This is not Biblical language, but rather,
language that comes from the controversies
that happened five hundred years ago.
The terms from the reformation
introduced a vagueness into the Christian experience,
that persists to the present day.
The New Testament talks about life in the Holy Spirit.
And this life in the Holy Spirit
is the experience
of God's favour,
goodness,
lovingkindness,
and Person, Presence, and Power in our lives.
One passage of scripture that suffers from
a vague interpretation
is today's gospel.
The Beatitudes.
Because I grew up in a liberal church,
I have heard the beatitudes used to support
a variety of political and social causes.
And preachers can get away with this
because the English translation is vague and broad.
And the words in our Bibles are bland enough
that anyone can read into them their own interpretations.
And a number of errors have become common,
like living in poverty is a better way of life
than being prosperous.

A few months ago
I was on the phone with screenwriter and film maker Bart Gavigan
and he said,
if you look around you
and there are lots of people
and they seem to be into the same things
pay attention.
This is not where God is moving
or where something important is happening.
But,
if you find yourself in a place
where you are all alone
and you continually face heavy warfare,
pay attention,
because this is where the battle rages.

Luke 2:21
And at the end of eight days, when he was to be circumcised, he was called Jesus,
the name given to him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Today is the eighth day after Christmas.
The days after Christmas are a strange thing.
Most years I find myself wanting to sit and be quiet
and world wants to go right on as is nothing has happened.
This year I have wanted to get right back to my work
and train strikes and rail work
have forced me to sit uncomfortably still.
Sometimes God puts us in uncomfortable situations
so whatever is on the inside becomes visible.
And sometimes you see good things
and sometimes things that need a little healing.
So we come back to the birth of Jesus
and the eighth day.
On the eighth day,
Jesus was circumcised.
This was the commandment
that God gave to Abraham.
Every male in his family would be circumcised
as a sign of the covenant between Abraham
and God.
Because out of this family,
all the families of the earth would be blessed.
And Jesus,
the fulfillment of that promise
is a member of that family.
And again,
Jesus did not come to abolish the law and the prophets,
Jesus came to be the fulfillment and the full expression
of the law and the prophets.
So in his flesh,
he is marked physically as a son of the covenant.
He is a son of Abraham.
And then he is named.
And this name is the name given to him by the Angel Gabriel.
And you shall call his name Jesus
because he will save his people from his sins.
In Hebrew and Aramaic
this phrase is a pun.
The name Jesus--
the Latin transliteration of the Greek
IESOU
which is the tranliteration of the original
Y'shua
means "salvation."
You shall call his name salvation
because he shall save his people from his sins.

God became a man.
This is the mystery of Christmas.
It is the heart of the Christian faith.
The Word became flesh.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
We have seen his glory,
as the glory of the Father.
Full of grace and truth.
And this fact,
that God became flesh,
so that if we have seen him
we have seen the Father,
is the heart of the spiritual war in the earth.
The Kingdom of God
is not a symbolic kingdom.
It is a real kingdom, designed to supplant
the kingdoms of this world
until the Kingdoms of this world become
the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ.
And this Kingdom has a real king.
A real king who entered into this time space reality,
and took on flesh.
So much so,
that St. Luke gives us specific historic events
that point to the date, the time, and the place where it happened.
This isn't a mythological event.
The Incarnation is history.
One day, while working on research on the church year,
I stumbled upon a quote from Hippolytus.
He was writing roughly around the year of our Lord 200.
And he said that he had been to the archives in Rome, and seen the record
of the census
and the birth of Jesus
based on details in Luke.
And that Jesus was born on a Wednesday, December 25, in the 42nd year
of Caesar Augustus.
Yes, I will let your head swim around that.
These things really happened.
And God became a man.
And this event is full of controversy.

Being a forerunner is hard work.
And many times, for prophetic people,
they either miss the fulfillment of the word
because of their own interpretations,
or because they never live to see it come to pass.
John is in prison.
He is heading for his death.
And after years of living a hard life in the desert,
preaching a hard message,
and making a way for the coming of the Lord,
he is beginning to doubt
that Jesus is the one he was preparing for.
The Bible doesn't tell us what John really thought about the messiah,
but it is clear here,
that he needed some reassurance at a dark time in his life
that Jesus is the one.
One of the greatest dangers for evangelicals
is the need to interpret.
Interpretation without listening,
is jumping to conclusions.

Jesus is coming soon.
Whether that coming is the Second Coming,
or a move of God that is going to bring a restoration and renewal
I do not know.
I do know that God has been raising a company of forerunners for some time.
There is a prophetic company in the earth
that continues to increase and rise up.
This company is reoriented to the Father and his ways.
This company is called to go out into the wilderness
and call others to consecration and purification.
A company that points to Jesus
and prepares a way for the coming of the Lord.
Some of you listening have heard the Lord tell you to do some weird stuff,
or things that were hard to understand.
Being a forerunner is hard,
and resistance you feel is real,
and the lack of support you feel is real.
This is the calling of the forerunner.
Today I want to pray for this anointing to be released in you
and in our midst.

A lot of how I approach our work comes from the Marketing Seminar.
It was one on the best uses of a Sabbatical I can suggest.
Another person I highly recommend is Simon Sinek.
Often he talks about leadership,
and it seems to come right out of the Sermon on the Mount.
One of my favorite quotes of his is
"Great leaders eat last."
Years ago when the TED talks were just beginning,
Simon Sinek did a talk with a paper flip chart and a magic marker
titled "Great leaders lead from their why."
It is one of the most watched TED talks of all time.
I have learned that regularly I have to come back to my why.
Why am I raising up artists to build Jesus a throne in the earth?
Along with this
I have to check and see if my How and what are following my why.
This is an important thing any leader or freelancer needs to do regularly.
About 90% of the “christians in the arts”
are undercutting their “why” with their “how.”
And our why is in this week's readings.
I live by faith,
listen to God and do what he tells me,
and raise up artists
to make a way for the coming of the Lord.
I live out of a suitcase and keep a simple life
because I am in love with a King
and I long for his returning.
When you are in love
you will do anything for your lover.
This longing for the return of Jesus
is the undercurrent in why God called us.
The Bible ends with all the nations of the earth
bringing the best of their art and culture into the city
for the King.
In that place,
and several others,
it is clear,
the best of human culture is going to last after the return of Jesus
and we are going to lay it before him as an offering.
Jesus came preaching the Kingdom.
He modeled a kingdom lifestyle,
and when he died on the cross,
He instituted and legally established his right to rule and reign on the earth.
This rule and reign was confirmed when he rosed from the dead.
And the ultimate sign of his rule in heaven as Priest and King
was the destruction of the Temple,
and the end of the Old Covenant sacrificial system.
The early church understood this,
and this is why the Ascension is referred to so often in the New Testament and the early church.
And Jesus is laying this out before us in Luke 21.
To us it is confusing
because we look at the passages like today's readings
and Matthew 24 and 25
and we hear them through
inadequate end times prophecy teaching
or religious grids.
When we talk about the prophetic in the Bible,
we are talking about revelation that is coming from eternity.
Many people understand the prophetic as a series of messages or pictures that come from heaven on a wire.
We think that we are receiving a linear message
because we think of these things in a temporal way—
in other words, we think that time exists in eternity.
There is no time in eternity.
Time was created
and it is fallen.
Outside of time,
where Jesus reigns,
it is always now.
Eternity is not a lot of time,
eternity is something other than time.
It is another dimension.
And this is why Jesus can be all places at all times right now.
And so Isaiah can be talking about Cyrus the great,
and the Blessed Virgin Mary in the same sentence,
because he is relating what he is seeing in the eternal realm.
When he wrote those things, he did not know what he was seeing.
Most of the time prophets do not fully understand what they see.
This is why so much of the prophetic movement gets it wrong.
Rather than holding it lightly,
they immediately interpret, and most of the interpretations are wrong.
And those interpretations became more important than the word itself.
When we receive information about more than one thing
in eternity
It is not either/or, but rather both/and.
And in this passage about the destruction of the temple,
Jesus is talking about that event
and also his return and establishment of the Kingdom.
He is seeing both at the same time
in the eternal realm.
This is what Peter was talking about when he said that
to the Lord a thousand years is like a day.
We misunderstand this and try to date when things are happening.
Peter who walked with Jesus knew
that sometimes was relaying information from out of time.
So in Luke 21
Jesus is talking about the way the earth will respond
when his kingdom will be established.
There are really only two words in this chapter that are important:
Signs
and
Watch.

The Foundation of the Kingdom
If you are a disciple of Jesus, you never mature beyond the basics.
The Kingdom is based on one universal principle:
You must die first if you want to live.
You must go low if you want to be raised up.
You must surrender all if you want to succeed.
And if you do these things
you will receive unseen resources
and this flow of grace will then flow out of you to others.
This is the opposite of the world's thinking.
The world says that you keep incrementally getting better and better.
You do what you can to get ahead,
and you work your way to the top.
And once you get to the top, pay your dues, and are successful,
your worth as a human being is proven, and you are better than other people.
And then once you made it,
you can do good things with the money you made and be remembered.
This honestly is the foundation of most of the world's charitable work.
In Luke's gospel, Jesus is presented teaching a much more succinct version of the Sermon on the Mount. Here is the sermon on the plain, a broad flat place. Jesus is more direct, and a lot more prophetic in Luke's version:
He begins with four "blesseds"
“Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.
“Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
Whenever we hear the word "blessed" in the New Testament, you are seeing the greek word "makarios." This word does not mean "happy."
It means full, satisfied, or enlarged. You are a bit grand if you are blessed.
And whenever we encounter this word in the Bible, we have to remember the Jewish thinking behind it. When a Jewish person hears this word,
they mentally go back to Deuteronomy 28:
“And if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. 3 Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle, and the young of your flock. 5 Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading-trough. 6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
And Jesus turns this on its head:
You are blessed when you are poor.
You are blessed when you are hungry.
You are blessed when you weep.
You are blessed when you are hated, slandered, and excluded.
The Kingdom is not what you see now.
The Kingdom is about unseen resources now,
and a visible future fulfillment.
This is always an already but not yet kingdom.
Right now you have the Holy Spirit within you as a deposit,
and when Jesus returns you will get all the fulfillment.
You will inherit the kingdom.
You will be full.
You will laugh.
You will be satisfied.
In the Kingdom, you are no greater than Abraham
who left his father's house and went to a place he did not know,
because he was looking for the city not made with hands.
When I was a student one of my teachers
told me I was in love with a church that didn't exist.
This is the Kingdom.
We are looking for something that doesn't exist here.
We are looking for a kingdom not made with hands.
Jesus is talking about true justice--
and this only makes sense when you have a supernatural worldview
where our satisfaction and life comes from unseen resources.
The hungry, the poor, the grieving, the outcast, and the persecuted are not going to see justice in this life--that justice is only going to happen after this life. We are called to bring the kingdom to this earth, but it is not going to be fulfilled until the resurrection and the return of the King.
And then Jesus tells us about
the only assurance of salvation in the New Testament.
The only way you will know
if you are going to heaven is
if men hate you,
and when they exclude you and revile you,
and cast out your name as evil,
on account of the Son of man!
And Jesus says,
Rejoice and be glad.
As some of you know,
I have experienced a lot of these things.
And honestly,
there are many days I get down about it.
And one day the Lord really spoke to me
and said,
why are you so down?
You are going to heaven,
and your reward is very great.
Rejoice.
Rejoice.
A Kingdom perspective
is everything.
I have been reading quotes from Smith Wigglesworth,
and one of them was about having a pure heart.
He said the more pure our heart is,
the more faith we will have.
And purity is about direction.
If you are directed toward the Kingdom,
you will begin to flow in the reality of the Kingdom.
Faith
is believing that the word the Lord said is true.
Let it be to me according to your word.
That's all faith is.
And when you get down and depressed,
just choose to align yourself with the word
and you will sense the faith flowing.
And then Jesus speaks a series of woes:
“But woe to you that are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
“Woe to you that are full now,
for you shall hunger.
“Woe to you that laugh now,
for you shall mourn and weep.
“Woe to you, when all men speak well of you,
for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
From a human earthly perspective
Jesus seems to be saying that the Kingdom
is all about socio-economic justice,
and there are many who use these kinds of passages
to support a Marxist/socialist kind of theology.
Jesus is not saying that at all.
And Torah tells us we are not to
give preference to the poor when we make decisions
or make judgements.
Jesus is talking about resources.
Woe to you that are benefitting from earthly resources.
Woe to you that trust in things that are going to disappear.
Woe to you that see your bank account and your stocked fridge
and your big earthly achievements as a sign of your value.
Those things are outside-in accomplishments,
and the kingdom is inside out.
When you die,
those things will be cast to the four winds.
One day I was walking through the city of London,
and there was an ancient bit of a church that
had been preserved.
The street was built around it,
and I asked the Lord
what he wanted to do with that.
And the Lord said,
"I don't care, I didn't build that."
A lot of the things we think are important
are not important for the Kingdom.
People keep praying for God to revive things
that He didn't build in the first place.
God has left the building.
You are the building.
And this why how we live is important.
Jesus gives us practical instructions
for how to flow in the unseen resources of the kingdom.
How are we to live
as people who have died
and live with the unseen power of the resurrection?
Love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you,
pray for those who abuse you.
To him who strikes you on the cheek,
offer the other also;
and from him who takes away your cloak
do not withhold your coat as well.
Give to every one who begs from you;
and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again.
And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.
These things are impossible in our strength.
And this is why so few people do them.
It is much easier to perform a religious ritual
(like going to conferences and taking classes,
going on pilgrimages or putting rocks in your shoes)
than to do these basic things that Jesus asks.
I lamented to a friend recently
that I have not heard a sermon on the Golden Rule in maybe 30 years.
Do to others
as you would have others do to you.
It's much easier to say
"I'm a Christian and God is blessing me by
giving me a big ministry,
a big house,
and a big following on social media."
I have met and worked with a lot of famous people.
Many of them reminded me of an old maxim from show business,
"be nice to the people you meet on the way up,
so that they are nice to you on the way down."
In order to do this,
you have to lay down your life
and your desires
and your need to be justified, vindicated, and have revenge.
A desire for revenge and justice
will stop the flow.
This turns into resentment and bitterness,
and often
eventually gets turned toward God.
Kingdom reality is different.
You are royalty.
You have access to the resources of the Kingdom.
You have the fruit of the spirit
that can flow out of you.
And so you look at the person who has
excluded you,
slandered you,
persecuted you,
and attacked you,
and you say.
I forgive you with the forgiveness the Father has given me.
I bless you with the peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self control
that the Holy Spirit gives to me.
Because I am a blessed person
and my name is written in heaven.
I can give to you what I have.
I can be a conduit of the Kingdom into this world
and I can do to others
what I wish they would do to me,
regardless of what the outcome is.
You are giving up your right to be right.
In all honesty,
most of what troubles us
in this world
would be sorted out with that little direction.
Put others before your own wants and needs
and trust God to meet your need.
Do to others as you would have others do to you.
This is the essence of sainthood.

on earth just as that will is unhindered in heaven.
Give us today our supersubstantial bread.
Forgive us our trespasses
as we release forgiveness to others.
Lead us away from testing and trials
and deliver us from the evil one.
