Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

Define honor- raise to a higher status through respect and recognition, something that holds weight and value

Dishonor- treat as common or lightly

Honor up- God deserves it first

Show by our worship of time and talents

1 Samuel 2:30 ESV

“, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.”

Honor across- spouse and neighbors

Show by love and sacerfice

Mark 12:30-31 ESV

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.””

Honor down- children and common people

Show by teaching and preparing a place

Matthew 10:41-42 ESV

“The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.””

Jesus is the only one found worthy

Revelation 5:12-13 ESV

“saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!””

Title- Your mind matters

Gods desire for your life

John 15:8

“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

2 Timothy 1:7

power, love, and sound mind.

What gets in the way?

Our though pattern. We need healthy thinking habits

Dr Caroline leaf says “research shows over 75% of mental and behavioral illness comes from your thought life”

2 Timothy 1:7

Not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and sound mind.

False evidence appearing real, Fear is practicing failure in advance

Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

How to develop a sound mind....

Guard

Spiritual Armour- helmet of Yesuah Is 59:17 JESUS

Put on the mind of Christ, savior, deliver, victor,

Strong people have the most control over their thoughts

Think about what you think about. You don’t have to own emotions or thoughts

Don’t entertain thoughts that don’t align with your identity or purpose

Your brain needs boundaries. Dr Cloud says “if you blame others for the way they make you feel you are giving them control over your life”

Guide

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 ESV

“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,”

Where is this thinking taking me?

Do I like the path I’m on?

People use drugs, alcohol, food to comfort their mind. Coping is not the same as guiding.

Get Out

1 Peter 5:7 ESV

“casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

We need time to challenge our thinking.

Practical step is to reflect and write out thoughts daily or weekly

What are the thoughts that consume your thoughts and mind?

Get people in your corner that knows the thoughts you hide from others but still love and support you enough not to let your thoughts say in you.

James 5:16 ESV

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”

Message title:

Do you want to be made well?

Main Scripture:

A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-9)

5 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, [a]Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, [b]paralyzed, [c]waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

Additional Scriptures:

  • Mark 11:25

And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

  • Luke 23:34

And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

  • Colossians 3: 12-13

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

  • Luke 4:31-32

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Message Quotes & Points (each bullet is one separate point):

  • “An eastern beggar often loses a good living by being cured of his disease. As bad as his current situation was, at least he was familiar with it.” (William Barclay)
  • Jesus is ultimately asking: Are you willing to steward the healing that I desire to bring you?
  • The beggar could not physically exist in two different states (lame vs. healed).

W (Willing)

E (Effort)

L (Learn)

L (Love )

  • Forgiveness brings healing.

Title- Good or God

Opening Scripture- Luke 23:39-5

Good is doing the will of God

Romans 12:2

”Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.“

Good is partnering with the work of God

The death of Jesus reminds us that Gods ways don't always look good.

Who will benefit the most from my action or decision?

Galatians 6:6-10

”Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.“

Good is following the ways of God

The death of Jesus brings eternal forgiveness of actions done outside the will of God.

Introduction

  • Read Acts 1:8 again.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirithas come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem (where they arecurrently), in all Judea (19 miles away) and Samaria (35 miles away), and tothe ends of the earth (FAR)

Points

  1. The holy spirit is the pre-requisite of being awitness. Vs 8

o The holy spirit has to be the guide for everypart of our lives.

  1. We are witnesses just as Jesus modeled.

o Jesus told them to spread the gospel whereverthey were. Your church has modeled the love of God so well in your community asI have seen and heard about the food pantry you run. He then said go a littlefurther, a little out of your comfort level.

  1. Jesus often met a physical need when he wasspreading the gospel.

o Jesus fed the 5000 he would not let them leavehungry Matthew 14:16

o Jesus healed the woman with the issue of bloodand said your faith has healed you. Matthew 9:22

o Jesus Healed the leaper and said your faith hashealed you Luke 17:19

o I long to hear him say well done good andfaithful servant when all is said and done. Matthew 25:33

Conclusion

Tie this to one child. There are places at the ends of theearth that we may never be able to physically reach but the gospel of Jesus canbe taken through your yes.

By the power of the Holy Spirit helping you select a child, pray for the child, give towards the child’s well-being, you are being awitness to that child and their family.

Main Scripture-

Matthew 4:18–22 (ESV): While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Follow Jesus vs people

Meaning of follow- align yourself behind and pursue after

Title- A Follower Forever

Pray

Scripture

Acts 2:42–47 (ESV): And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Points

Develop Daily Devotion- what are you devoted to?

Teaching/learning from?, fellowship/hanging around?, prayer/talking to?

Daily devo, your life will move in the direction of your devotion

Goal of Grace- Acts

Acts 4:32–33 (ESV): Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

Grace and strength when we have all things in common. Same goal but many functions, common needs meet with grace, Grace statements

Repurpose your possessions- Sold their possessions to meet needs,

Matthew 19:16-22 rich rule choose money over following Jesus, are your possessions building your kingdom or Gods?

Break bread with believers- who have you invited into your home?

When have you took the time to host someone, are there believers in your life that are close to you?

Inspire others with an invitation- as a speaker, validation in the invitation, leave the results to God. My life and actions should act as an invitation.

83% of people came to church because someone personally invited them

average invited 7 times before someone says yes to church- they are not rejecting you, overcome rejection by an inspiration. Share your excitement and plans for the weekend.

Main Scripture- Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

Title- Fight for Love

Why do we need armor? Protection in the unseen

What are we protecting? Our ability to bring Gods kingdom

What is the enemy trying to prevent? Our love for God and each other

We guard ourselves so we can continue to bring Gods kingdom to earth.

Points

Gods armor will protect you-

Ephesians 6:12 we are fighting in the spirit, to be strong to love, protect others

Without spiritual armor we use physical things for protection. Money, possessions and distance.

Gods Armor will test you-

1 samuel 17:39 get out what doesnt fit

When we begin to put on the armor we will notice what doesn’t fit.

Gods Armor will move you-

called to bring the kingdom, Love brings the kingdom of God over the kingdom of darkness.

Compare armor and love

Belt of truth- love seeks truth

Breastplate of righteousness- love guards your heart

Shoes gospel of peace- love pursues peace Psalms 34:14

Shield of faith- love hopes for others

Helmet of salvation- love guards the things I think

Sword words of God- love speaks Gods truth John 17:17

Series- For the Love of God

Main Scripture- 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

”Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

Our problem is we like instead of love

Title- Just Like Love

Is your relationship with God based on a feeling or loyalty?

Do we like or love God?

Mark 12:31 Love your neighbor as yourself

If you love God then one way to show it is to love others.

As much as we need the love of God, others need us to love them.

Points

Love speaks truth, like gossip

Love sacrifices, like is self-centered

Love brings trust, like doubt

Love has hope, like is past focused

Love endures, like gives up quickly

If we are losing patience we are losing power.

Anger is a sign of not being in control. love gives you power over evil.

Love will set you free from the pain that people have caused.

Love gives back the control people try to take because you choose to love.

Title:

Immanuel, God with us

Main Scripture:

Matthew 1:21-23

21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us)

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Sign- an object, mark or non verbal symbol that makes something clearly know

Give a sign, what better sign of love than to be present

God is omnipresent

How do we know God is with us?

Points:

Sound of God

Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.””

‭‭

Sight of God

Mark‬ ‭4‬:‭35‬-‭41‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?””

‭‭

Sense of God

John‬ ‭14‬:‭12‬-‭21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

““Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.””

No Introduction Necessary

The Israelites knew who their God is.

They know the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and they know the stories.

Moses was wondering how to introduce a God from the past and The Lord redirects him and says “All they need to know is I AM”

“I AM” is an active name. It’s not past, it’s not distant. It’s present and involved.

There’s 3 things I think we can learn from this encounter to remember about our God.

  1. He’s The God who IS

But he’s not just a God who was, He’s a God who IS!

The same thing happens to us as we get older. We stop being people who are and become people who were. “You should have seen me back in the day I was _______”

We were crazy, we tried challenging things, we were outgoing and social before people hurt us, we used to strive for goals, we did hard things…all these things in the past tense.

We live like people who were following a God who was…

But the truth is “Our God IS and because HE IS and we STILL ARE our best days and biggest triumphs could still be ahead of us”

You can only think of him and the God who was because you look at yourself in the past tense as well. Before that mistake, before that trauma, before that setback, before this health issue…

Moses killed a man and ran into the desert to hide. Next thing he knows he’s towards the end of his life and God shows up.

No Moses, I’m not just the God of Your Fathers, I AM and YOU ARE.
Moses- “I can’t speak” I AM AND YOU ARE

Church, your best and most impactful days can still be ahead of you but you have got to stop looking at yourself and your God in the past tense.

He’s not the God who was and we are not the people who were

  1. He’s the GOD that is “AS IS”

We find Moses acknowledging God but wanting something new.

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

Moses acknowledges that he’s the God of their Fathers but he’s looking for new info and the LORD says no, this is MY NAME FOREVER from generation to generation I AM WHO I AM.

The Lord says, I AM WHO I AM.

The Lord’s ways will get you feeling uncomfortable. It will make you feel left out at times. They will make you feel like you don’t belong. You don’t.

You’re called to be “IN THIS WORLD BUT NOT OF IT”

You’re a “Royal priesthood. Exiles and Aliens among this world”

  1. He is the God of __________

Isn’t it interesting that God could have named himself so many things that other gods were going by. The God of Thunder, The God of POWER, etc etc

He said I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and this will be my name forever from generation to generation.

He’s Holy but he lets himself be known through his people.

But…
Abraham was cowardly and lied about his wife to save himself
Isaac repeated the mistakes of his father
Jacob was know by lies and deceit

But God was ashamed to say he was their God. He was the God who chose them. Who redeemed them. Who changed the world through them.

But when she met him she didn’t live like a person who was. She lived like a person who is brand new made clean by her faith in the one and only. She went and told everybody come and see.

They came and spent time with Jesus and then they’d tell her we no longer believe because you told us. We’ve heard him for ourselves and he is the Savior of the world.

The God at the Well became the God of the town.
Don’t leave this place without being able to say He is your God.

  1. Make him Your God today

  2. If your stuck living in the past. You serve a God who is and you’re a person who is a son and daughter of the living God. Your best days aren’t behind you.

Ephesians 3:7-10 ESV

“Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.”

What is Grace?

Undeserving favor

The proactive strength of God to accomplish or avoid something

The Grace of God connects our present to our future!

Title- Grace for the future

Points

Grace is a gift- a posture to receive

Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Grace is for others- we don’t receive because we are not willing to give

James 4:3 ESV

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.””

Grace is hidden wisdom- the world is blind, treasures of God are deep

2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV

“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

What are you Grace for?

Grace to gather, groups, generations, generosity, grow, creativity, worship, diversity,

The Grace of God connects our present to our future!

Title- Find Me Serving

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (NIV)

Luke 22:24-27 (CEB)

24 An argument broke out among the disciples over which one of them should be regarded as the greatest.

25 But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles rule over their subjects, and those in authority over them are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26 But that’s not the way it will be with you. Instead, the greatest among you must become like a person of lower status and the leader like a servant. 27 So which one is greater, the one who is seated at the table or the one who serves at the table? Isn’t it the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

John 13 (CEB)

12 After he washed the disciples’ feet, he put on his robes and returned to his place at the table. He said to them, “Do you know what I’ve done for you? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you speak correctly, because I am. 14 If I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you too must wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example: Just as I have done, you also must do.

  1. Serving is your identity.

Acts 9:36 (NIV) . 36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.

  1. Serving sharpens you.

· “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” --1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

  1. Serving is love expressed

Romans 15:1(MSG) “Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?”

Romans 12:4-5 (MSG) 4-6 In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.

MESSAGE TITLE: CLEAN UP

Psalm 51:7-13 ESV
“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.”

Titus 3:3 ESV
“For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.”

Titus 3:4-7ESV
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

POINT 1:
WE CANT CLEAN OURSELVES

POINT 2:
ACKNOWLEDGE IT

““Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.”
Matthew 23:25-26 ESV

POINT 3:
CLEANING UP MEANS CLEANING OUT

Hebrews 9:14 NIV
“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”

Ezekiel 36:25-26 ESV
“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

Psalm 51:1-2 ESV
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!”

POINT 4:
BIG MESSES MEAN MORE WORK

POINT 5:
THE REWARD IS WORTH IT

Psalm 51:10-13 ESV
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.”

Closing… [May not use:]

Psalm 51:7 ESV
“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

John 19:29-30
“A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Sermon Title: The Gift of Contentment

Slide 1:

Philippians 4:10-13

10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Slide 2:

Contentment: The degree of happiness which consists in being satisfied with present conditions; a quiet, uncomplaining, satisfied mind.

Slide 3:

Synonyms: Ease, peace, gladness, serenity, fulfilment, gratification

Antonyms: Disappointment, misery, sadness, discontent, displeasure, worry, unhappiness, agitation

Slide 4:

Slide 5:

What steals our contentment?

Complaining

Philippians 2:14-15 (ESV)

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,”

Slide 6:

What steals our contentment?

Consumption

Slide 7:

Contentment is an unshakable inner peace not dictated or determined by our outward circumstances.

Slide 8:

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Title: “Some Assembly Required”

Topic: Community

Theme: Community is for everyone

Key Passage: Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)

24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Together, we form up The Body

1Cor 12:12;19-21 (NLT): One Body with Many Parts

12 The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.

19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

Together, we form up a place for God to inhabit

Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. (Psalm 22:3, ESV)

Together, we demonstrate unity. Ps 133 (ESV)

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is

when brothers dwell in unity![a]

2 It is like the precious oil on the head,

running down on the beard,

on the beard of Aaron,

running down on the collar of his robes!

3 It is like the dew of Hermon,

which falls on the mountains of Zion!

For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,

life forevermore.

Message Title: Camp Fire

Scripture:

“And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” Ephesians 2:22

Scripture:

John 1: 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwellingamong us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Original Word: σκηνόω                                                                                                      skénoó: to have one's tent, dwell

Scripture:

John 7: 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Points:

  1. You are built for community
  2. You are built for indwelling
  3. You are built for movement

Scripture-Luke 9:1-6

Questions

What is essential? Storms are reminders!

What do you need?

Title-No Thing

Luke was a doctor and is reminding us of eye witness accounts, and prophecy Jesus fulfilled

Chapter 8 see miracles of calming storm, casting out demons, healed woman with blood disease, raise a girl from the dead.

Chapter 9 Jesus journey to Jerusalem, learning to follow Jesus along the way

V1-you can have power and authority but not live that way, live with expectations

V2-the good new is God's kingdom can be found on earth, miracles are the kingdom of God in action

V3-living with nothing requires faith, God's ways keeps us connected to him not things

V4-stay in what God has provided, it is an insult to envy

V5-not everyone will be happy for you, live in freedom

V6-there will be a season to leave and change

Fear of death- Death to our desires

Baptism is death to old self, forgiveness is death to myself,

Luke 10

God wants to set you free so you can be sent.

Everyone has 24 hours, make room for God.

What do you need to let go?

Quitting is not the same as letting go, live with an open hand.

Make plans now for where you want to go, and what you need to let go!
