A show in Hoisan on the Hoisan experience.
I’m Joyce. I’m Nancy. We’re sisters who grew up in Chinatown New York. We speak Hoisan at home. We spoke Hoisan on the streets. And we thought, why not share Hoisan and see what comes of it. Here’s our experiment and journey through Hoisan. (Fair warning: As bamboo shoots, sometimes we remix Hoisan, with Cantonese, Chinglish, and English, but we make do.)
Right before Dongzhi, we are bidding you a special farewell, because this is our series finale! It has been two years since we first started this project and many waves of the COVID-19 pandemic later, Hoisan Hour is broadcasting for one last time. Thank you for listening and supporting us! May this give you the fuel and inspiration to continue the good fight~
We spoke with photojournalist, Alan Chin, who like us was born and raised in New York City’s Chinatown. Through Alan’s recount, we weave through the channels of time, and to 1989 Tiananmen Square, the intersection of world history that would propel him into his life’s work.[We want to dedicate this episode to all the journalists who devoted their lives to investigating and reporting the truth, even when their lives are in peril.]
Right in time for the season of thanksgiving and remembrance, we cease from our regular schedule, to not only pause, but gather with Hoisan Sauce. Join us as Dennis and Edmond share their origin story and cast a vision of possibilities for Taishanese and community with their Discord server and Youtube channel.
This week we continue our conversation with Genny Lim, with Chinatown memories, a journey into assimilation, and our way out of it to embrace who we are!
We spoke with the final member of the Last Hoisan Poets, Genny Lim. Even though we grew up on opposite sides of the country, the three of us find overlapping journeys and questions around home, daughterhood, and the permission to dream.

We take a look back on lessons learned from running our first marathon and memories of growing up in Chinatown.
We spoke with our cousin Michelle about childhood and breaking the ice on hard topics with the family, such as personal mental health. Our conversation also had a sprinkle of cantopop (if you know, you know ;)).
We discuss the origins for creating this podcast and platform for Taishanese/Toisan/Hoisan with many hopes and laughs!

This week the Ma sisters spoke with fellow New Yorker and an Astorian, who also loves Sam Hui: Vincent Fang! It's a small world -- Vincent and Joyce actually went to the same high school. Vincent is a public defender, board member of Chinatown Youth Initiatives, basketball player, and overall inspiration. This week, the Ma sisters had the honor of speaking with another pair of Hoisan sisters: Flo & Nellie Wong. They’re also two thirds of the group “The Last Hoisan Poets.” Though we grew up in different Chinatown’s and carry out different artistic careers, the Hoisan bond tether us in a way that exists beyond words. Hear a bit of their story & their beautiful poetry.
