For U.S. Navy veteran Stuart Wilson, a difficult restoration project led him to create the process and client experience he wished existed in the first place. What began as a small garage operation, shaped by the problems Stuart ran into restoring his own Bronco, became Velocity Restorations, a company now operating from a 135,000-square-foot facility in Florida, building what's known as Re-Engineered Classics. AutoVision News Radio host Carl Anthony met with Stuart at The Henry in Dearborn, Michigan, where the two sat inside his personal truck, a Founder's Series International Scout, to talk shop. The two discuss the difference between a restomod and a Re-Engineered Classic, how the buyer base continues to evolve, and why Velocity-built vehicles are meant to be driven, enjoyed, and even passed down. It starts with a ping on your phone: "According to our records, you have an outstanding toll charge." It looks official, cites municipal codes, and threatens a late fee or legal action if the balance remains unpaid. But there’s a catch. You haven't been to that state recently, if at all. On this episode of AutoVision News Radio, Carl Anthony examines the recent surge of toll-related text scams. Drawing from his latest reporting for technology website How-To Geek, Carl explains why these "smishing" attacks are so effective and how scammers exploit our desire to be law-abiding citizens to steal sensitive financial data. In this AV Radio episode:* The Spray-and-Pray Method: Why you're getting texts from states you've never visited. * Red Flags: How to spot the differences between a fake URL and a legitimate agency site. * Verification vs. Panic: Safe ways to check your account status without falling into a trap. * Protective Steps: What to do if you continue to receive these messages.

Although ADAS features can be beneficial in certain situations, drivers must remain diligent and engaged behind the wheel. In a comprehensive study, AAA researchers evaluated five passenger vehicles with low-speed-capable active driving assistance systems across the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Two primary objectives were established for the study: How do the active driving assistance systems of late-model vehicles perform in heavy traffic, and how does a hands-off system compare with a hands-on system?
AV Radio host Carl Anthony summarizes the findings of this AAA study, in which the ADAS systems under test experienced a "notable event" every nine minutes.

Matt Hortop, Electrified Vehicle Research Scientist at AVL Test Systems, joined Carl Anthony at the 2025 Reimagine Mobility Conference. During their reception fireside chat, Matt expanded on a few key points regarding vehicle electrification:
-- Headlines Versus Headwinds: Although total combined power outputs are attention-grabbing, behind the scenes, engineers once contended with less-than-desirable testing equipment for validating critical EV system components.
-- Time Savings Bank: Matt and his colleagues work diligently to save AVL customers time and resources in the long run, ultimately allowing them more opportunities for innovation.
-- EVs & The S Curve: EVs open up new opportunities for consumers to experience vehicle ownership (i.e., software-defined cars). With each product iteration comes a new and different way for drivers to interact with their vehicles. These changes, whether for the powertrain technology or the owner's experience inside the car, necessitate a more rigorous testing and development process.
-- Stay Curious: Matt encourages all automotive professionals to ask lots of questions and take prediction timelines with a grain of salt.

Visual assets are one of the most important deliverables as OEMs prepare to launch their latest models. As the saying goes, we only get one chance to make a good first impression—these words are especially true during those critical moments when the curtain is lifted, and the world sees that shiny new vehicle for the first time.
Whether on stage during the reveal, for the press release, the retail website, or to share on social media, the photos and videos associated with a particular vehicle go a long way in selling it to the public. However, producing and organizing these visual assets is a remarkable challenge.
Faruk Heplevent, founder of The Scope, joins Carl Anthony for this episode of AutoVision News Radio. The Scope is an innovative company that uses computer-generated imagery to create visual assets for vehicle launches and advertisements. Since 2018, there has been $160 billion in investment dollars linked to electric vehicles in North America, based on data from the Center for Automotive Research (2024 CAR Book of Deals). For EVs to reach their full potential, consumers must have complete faith and confidence in the charging infrastructure. Like how consumers think nothing of a gas pump when they pull up, building that same level of trust with charging stations is imperative.
Elaina Farnsworth, co-founder and CEO of SkillFusion, joins Carl to discuss a significant (and perhaps overlooked) opportunity for skilled trade professionals as more EVs populate our roadways. Elaina and her team at SkillFusion are building the talent pipeline of certified electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) workers through its EVSE Diagnostic Technician (EDT) Program. This robust talent pool will ultimately ensure charging stations across the United States are operational and reliable, increasing consumer confidence in EVs.

While consumers may not understand all the jargon, quirks, and idiosyncrasies of the automotive industry, their interests are piqued once they have a basic definition of a connected car and its potential benefits. However, that interest only extends so far, as consumers view certain connected car features and capabilities as more valuable than others.
This realization is among the key findings in a body of research from Salesforce in partnership with YouGov, released in January 2024, that surveyed nearly 2,200 U.S. drivers aged 18 and over.

Consumer trust is one of the most significant pieces of the ADAS puzzle. Although the value of consumer trust with regard to ADAS is well acknowledged, it's no less important, especially as technologies like DMS enter the picture.
What is the link between consumer trust and the fully optimized synchronization of ADAS and DMS? When the external and internal sensors are on the same page, communicating in tandem with the intent to keep vehicle occupants safe, what would that do for consumer trust?
Seeing Machines has been tackling these and other complex questions for over two decades, driven by an internal purpose of getting everyone home safe. CEO Paul McGlone joins Carl to discuss the relationship between ADAS and DMS, why consumer trust is essential, and how the company continues to rally around its founding principles of safety.

Daily traffic volumes have rebounded from pandemic lows in 2020, but perhaps not surprisingly, traffic and pedestrian fatalities have risen in tandem. Maybe also not surprisingly, unsafe driving behaviors like speeding, texting, and operating under the influence continue to impact these statistics. Among the questions are why people engage in risky behaviors behind the wheel and what countermeasures can be implemented to prevent such behavior.
These questions are at the core of the latest Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI) survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, released in December 2023. The latest TSCI survey identified six driver profiles and examined the social approval and/or disapproval of certain unsafe driving habits.
Dr. Rebecca Steinbach, Senior Researcher for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, joins Carl to provide additional insight into the findings of the latest TSCI survey. Dr. Steinbach explains the six driver profiles, how perceptions towards speeding have changed, and the little things we can do to become safer drivers.

As the world moves towards an electric vehicle revolution, the need for certified technicians to maintain the charging infrastructure is greater than ever. For EVs to reach their full potential, consumers must have complete faith and confidence in the charging infrastructure. Like how consumers think nothing of a gas pump when they pull up, building that same level of trust with charging stations is imperative.
SkillFusion co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Alisyn Malek joins Carl for an in-depth discussion on this topic, sharing insight into how SkillFusion is developing a nationwide talent pipeline that can operate and maintain electric vehicle chargers for peak performance and availability. Vehicles with all-wheel drive can provide more traction and stability, but how exactly do these systems achieve that? In an oncoming era of electrification, what are the differences and synergies between traditional all-wheel drive systems for gasoline-powered cars and e-drive systems? When we see terms and phrases like torque transfer, traction motor, and inverter, what do they mean? And what, if any, is the relevance of all-wheel drive and e-drive systems to larger-picture topics like sustainability?
AutoVision News Radio host Carl Anthony visited GKN Driveline North America in Auburn Hills, Michigan, to gain additional insight and perspective. While onsite, Carl met with Ben DeLand, Director of Electrical Hardware Engineering at GKN Automotive. The average price paid for a new vehicle in the United States reached its highest in June 2022, according to Kelley Blue Book. Average transaction prices surpassed $48,000 for new vehicles, beating the previous high of $47,202 set in December 2021. The rising transaction prices also impacted hybrid and EV buyers.
Carl Anthony, Managing Editor of Automoblog and AutoVision News, examines the key data points and findings from Kelley Blue Book. He looks at things through an experiential marketing and economics lens, wondering if this will hurt how consumers view ADAS and if automakers run the risk of trying to over-monetize software-defined architectures.
"On one hand, as someone who works in automotive, the data is fascinating as data like this often is," Anthony said. "However, as a consumer who sticks to a budget, it's a bit concerning, as we have been watching the average transaction price for new cars reach historic highs again and again since at least 2018."

Unlike humans, autonomous vehicles cannot see, think, or act for themselves. Instead, they rely on high-definition maps to supply a pre-encoded context about the environment. Machines cannot improvise and adapt as quickly as humans or other biological systems, so safety concerns arise if a vehicle suddenly encounters an unplanned obstruction or outdated map information. That said, can we increase a car's reliance on real-time scene construction and reduce its dependency on prior maps and localization? If so, how might we go about it?
To help us understand this further, we sat down with Sravan Puttagunta, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperspec AI. In this episode, we look at how autonomous vehicles can access more of the road network, why it's essential to consider what evolutionary biology has to say, and how to solve the challenges we encounter via a "first principles" approach.

In the context of automotive safety, we don't usually think of cybersecurity as being experienced dynamically and personally, at least not to the degree of something like an airbag. Yet as our cars become more software-defined, the gap between safety and security will close. Protecting our data and the integrity of the vehicle drive systems against malicious actors will be as crucial as seatbelts and crumple zones.
Jennifer Tisdale, Chief Executive Officer of GRIMM, a cyber research firm, joins Carl to discuss what a robust cybersecurity strategy looks like, why testing for vulnerabilities is not a sign of weakness, and what legacy she hopes to leave in the automotive industry.

The modern automobile is a collection of many different systems combined to create a finished product. No one system is "better" than another as each serves a specific and essential function. In the same way, our automotive careers are the sum of many different experiences, none of which we should discount.
Justin C. McKnight, founder of Steady Growth Consulting, is many things: an engineer, executive, technical sales professional, leadership coach, hip-hop artist, and father. Justin shows us how what we do in life and business is interconnected and how it's possible to take what we have learned and channel it towards a more fulfilling future.
"Born, raised, and still living with my family in Michigan, I've enjoyed my 20 plus years in the automotive industry working for several different global tier suppliers," Justin said. "I now have the experience to help organizations build cohesive leadership teams that inspire cultures of greatness, leading to increased fulfillment, retention, and revenues while lowering costs."

Software-defined architectures are the key to making the "car of the future" possible. An electrified vehicle with the highest levels of connectivity and convenience can likely only be achieved through a software-centric platform. While such platforms promise increased safety, comfort, and functionality, the computing power requirements jump exponentially.
To gather some insight into software-defined cars, we turned to Daniel Sisco, the Senior Director of Digitial Product Strategy at Renesas. We explore how Renesas is helping set the tone for several converging trends in automotive, including electrification and autonomy. Daniel also shares his early years in college and why he decided to pursue a career in automotive.
